Jacobs (LolVStein), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

I have a weakness for this sort of music

Jacobs (LolVStein), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

also
albums:
Gringo Gringer's Breakfast Included
Ola Bergman's The Satellite City
Fairmont's Paper Stars

Jacobs (LolVStein), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

Nathan Fake - Outhouse

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

and Hansen & DJ Daniel's Only Love(Marcus Cabral Mix) From Triple R Selection 3

Jacobs (LolVStein), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

kraftwerk - model
human league - human
visage - fade to grey.

moogs with emotion.

retroboy, Monday, 21 November 2005 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

Actually all four of Elektronische Musik Interkontinental are pretty moody and worth getting. The first two are more ambient, but still nice. I think I like 3 best, if only for the broker dealer remix.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

poor leno, where did leno go

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Kaito, Special Love

David Bowie, "A New Career in a New Town" - that intro sounds so techno to me. And, from the same album, I'd like to request a Superpitcher remix of "Always Crashing in the Same Car".

willem (willem), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Carl Graig: "At Les" (both the version released under his own name and the one on the Innerzone Orchestra are great)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, also 'How The West Was Won' by Craig (as Psyche?)

Omar (Omar), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

Also, check out the Fallen Angel LP by Prism, Susumu Yokota's techno guise. Yokota has made lots of soft, sad music, but the rest I've heard isn't exactly techno, more like ambient/experimental.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

I have this wonderful LP of sad Russian techno with melancholy vocals, but I have no idea how to transcribe the band name into Western alphabet (so I can't even google it), in Russian it reads something like "ARROU". Maybe someone here knows what I'm talking about, the album has a red cover, it came out a few years ago and I think it was released by V2 Records.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

well.....no even ever seems to mention ada "luckycharm", even though i do mention, always saying "no one ever mentions....."

i like blindhouse enough but that one is pure sweetness in a sad way

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 21 November 2005 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

tuomas, i cant think what it could be. is the wirting in caps or lower case? could it be something like "ÀÐÐÎÖ"?

i cant think of any letters in russian that look like an "R", there is a "ß" but thats backwards.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 21 November 2005 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Ada's 'And More' also

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 21 November 2005 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Ambrose, the name is in caps, and yeah, maybe the "R"s are backwards. I'll check it when I get home.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 21 November 2005 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

The vibe of the Superpitcher remix of "Hi Freaks" is such a specific Superpitcher vibe that it almost seems a waste of time to suggest anyone else, but:

Phantom Ghost - Nothing Is Written (Tobias Thomas & Superpitcher Mix)
Raz O'Hara - This' A Beautiful Day (Mathias Schaffhauser Mix)
Quarks - Du Entkommst Mir Nicht (Lawrence Remix)
Chelonis R. Jones - I Don't Know
RJ Project - What Colour Is Love (Red Jerry's Monkeyhouse Mix)
Alexander Kowalski - Lock Me Up (Sascha Funke Mix)
Dennis Desantis - Promotion of Vice (Alexander Kowalski Mix)

Baaderonixx ménage ses forces dans l'attente du Grand Soir (baaderonixx), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

I think last time it was "techno tracks that make you cry", but I'm not sure if there's such a big difference.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Aril Brikha - Deeparture in Time

Telegram Sam, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

Jesse Somfay - "For One Brief Moment I Was There" = gray, spiralling sadness

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

You could say that about most of Somfay's material, too.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

i wish that i could kiss sadly to this music. but no one i know finds it beautiful, sad or anything really. well, no girls. not one girl anyway.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

Poor Ambrose!

You'll have to think of her while you listen tearfully...

Anyway wanted to add:

Light In Darkness - YMO
Computerlove - Kraftwerk
Desire - 69
Electric Bedroom - Alter Ego
These Days - Petter

There was also a track on Movin' Melodies from 1995 that from memory had a very sad anthemic melody over a kind of HiNRG rhythm but I don't know its name...

Telegram Sam, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 02:51 (nineteen years ago)

more 69- Microlovr. basically Carl Craig is the king of this.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

"I am become ILM, destroyer of girls"

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

that joakim remix of seelenluft

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, I've heard most of Cozen's mix!

I don't like that "Teen Angst" remix, though. It saps everything that's good about the original right out.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Cozen -- from the looks of it, you should have just made a 2CD Best of Superpitcher comp!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i was thinking the same.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

If every CD could double as a best of Superpitcher, there would be no need for a heaven.

We'd already be there.

Well then you better use techno Smiths covers :)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

Superpitcher is human though, his latest remix of Andreas Dorau is actually kind of kind of sloppy! Not that he had the best source material to work with.

Fandango, I'd say the new Brinkmann album is very much worth purchasing!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

nope. this lawrence is peter kersten, denim lawrence is lawrence hayward.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

btw, i used that phrase in my wire column for next month, so please don't go accusing me of auto-plagiarization come january. i'm not running out of ideas, just integrating my life-on-the-web into my writing to create a seamless, subjective whole.

and i swear it really does sound like that - fingertips rubbing over shined-up wood, metal heft in hand, violence on the horizon, the buzz of butterfly kisses lingering on the skin.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Sunday, 18 December 2005 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

they're all discrete tracks, no blends involved. brilliant album, best lawrence album not by lawrence (even though i'm pretty sure it actually is lawrence).

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 19 December 2005 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

Muchas gracias señor!

I can't say Lawrence's The Night... bowls/bowled me over the way ...Blight did/does. A touch too atonal (a la his first album) for my tastes. Glad he did something else (or did he!?!?!).

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Monday, 19 December 2005 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, he also is Sten.

even though i'm pretty sure it actually is lawrence

You think so, Philip? (discog says his real name is Hendrik Weber...aah but his face is hidden in shadows. What mystery! ;)

Omar (Omar), Monday, 19 December 2005 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

In re: Diamond Daze, I hate to be that guy (although a few here can attest I am that guy): "Suzan" segues into "St. Denis Bei Licht" and "Schneeflieder" segues into "Sad Saphire" - oh well, I have the tracks, am currently enjoying them, and just might someday happen upon the hard-to-find CD and join the tracks myself...someday.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

I still haven't gotten around to hearing that Agoria at the controls mix in full but need to. This is one of, perhaps my favourite style of electronic music (I suggested Le Noir - Eleny (radioslave remix) in another thread a moment ago, but it belongs here too).

This time, or I'll perc you later (mehlt), Friday, 12 December 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

this thread is like manna from heaven for me.

That Modernist mix someone mentioned upthread definitely fits the criteria. Just for 'Stay' by Autobianchi. Which is one of those techno tracks with really trite lyrics ('when i heard you say/that you would leave today/i only wanted you to stay') that somehow sounds affecting. See also - No Turning Back by Gui Boratto.

There's a new Richard Davis single, "What You Are," that fits into this category.

with hidden noise, Monday, 23 August 2010 13:39 (fourteen years ago)

Hello. I've been greatly enjoying this thread...so much so that I registered to be able to contribute to the discussion. Thanks, particularly to theBlackSheep, for introducing me to so many stellar new tracks and artists. This style of music is currently the whole my musical diet, and while I'm sure this will shift soon I'm greatly enjoying the ride.
2 things that immediately come to mind: an artist named Solee, who produces as well as operates Parquet Recordings. All of his productions and mixes are worthwhile...he started calling this more melodic but still minimal techno stuff "neotrance," which seems a poor name but is a good effort at differentiation. All of the mixes and compilations are good gateways for exploring artists that are working towards a more mythic, emotionally resonant sound.
One of the producers that I came across through "Neotrance Essentials" is Ryan Davis, who is probably my favorite techno producer at the moment. This guy is CONSISTENT, unlike so many others...check out his solo work in particular, though also of note is his collaborations with Lanny May (under the predictable moniker of "Davis & May").
Enjoy...

Richard Davis' most recent musical releases are two 10" ep's from last year. "Self Destruct" is very good and has a soft sad techno remix on the flip. Haven't heard the other one.

The Kiasmos (Olafur Arnalds and pal) album is pretty.

If you sat and hit a jam jar with a stick along to it it would probably sound like Lawrence.

djh, Saturday, 22 November 2014 12:36 (ten years ago)

this Kiasmos album is real nice, ty. it's so easy to make a mediocre version of this style, but this pretty much nails it.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 29 November 2014 01:55 (ten years ago)

Kiasmos album is good - very reminiscent of Pantha Du Prince and there's no mistaking the involvement of Olafur Arnalds - but I wish the drums and percussion weren't so slight. "Bent" is incredible though, can't wait for the inevitable Dixon edit.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 22:17 (ten years ago)

I liked most of the Kiasmos album ok, but when things pick up near the end it gets rather messy and unnecesary loud imo, that was a bit of a let down. It's nice, but nowhere near as good as Lawrence or Pantha du Prince.

'The Absence of Blight' is his masterpiece if you ask me, followed by 'The Night Will Last Forever'

Agree Kiasmos gets a bit too loud too soon - I actually like the later tracks a lot, I would just have preferred the more relaxed atmosphere to last a little longer #chilloutroom4lyfe

Tried some Lawrence but it just doesn't emotionally engage me at all.

ledge, Friday, 5 December 2014 11:12 (ten years ago)

I can only think that you are listening to the wrong Lawrence ...

djh, Friday, 5 December 2014 18:32 (ten years ago)

I started to dive into Lawrence but grooveshark locked up and broke my browser so I'll queue it up again. I was really enjoying it (maybe one track before it quit)!!

Evan, Friday, 5 December 2014 18:37 (ten years ago)

i checked out a bunch on youtube and felt the same as ledge, it's really nice but felt a little too slick or hotel lounge-y for me.

i just have a real weird relationship with four-on-the-floor dance music, i don't listen to much of it. lush & pretty is good, but the stuff that really clicks tends to feel 'raw' and tactile in some way.

Lawrence is so good in the winter.

it sounds very melancholy to me in a wistful, pensive, James Stinson interstate truck driving at night kind of way but whatever I’m heavily depressed so

maybe not so soft but i hear the melancholy in it for sure. the synth lead does fade in and out like street lamps floating by on a highway
