The Essential Dance Tracks of the 00's

I'm planning to make a blog post of 25 favorite dance tracks. But I'm afraid that that list would be filled with indie artists like LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, or already known artists like Daft Punk, Isolee. So could you recommend me some lesser known but essential dance tracks to download. Thanks.

P.S. I already own the Kompakt 6 compilation.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

ukg = UK Garage incorporating 2 step, grime etc. Jaimeson's 'True' would fit into this category but it's VERY pop. search ILM for older threads if you want to include this kind of thing.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

omg i forgot 'what else is there?'!!!!!! never mind tim picked it up. tim, have you heard the jurgen paape track on total7? it's called 'take that' and it is super-awesome.

heiko voss - i think about you

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

I can do a separate list for uk garage obv.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

nobody mention "emerge"? too hipster, eh?

Aditya (dan138zig), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

haha i generally thought 'emerge' was so long ago that it didn't count. but it isn't and it does, and while you're at it there's kylie minogue's 'come into my world' (fischerspooner rmx)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

Bangalter and Falcon-So Much Love To Give

How quickly we forget :(

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

haha i generally thought 'emerge' was so long ago that it didn't count.

Dude, SANDSTORM counts!

It's been a long decade, hasn't it?

I am faintly terrified by how many of these I know virtually every second of.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

well aditya said Daft Punk already so figured they'd already have it down but then there was contradiction

basement jaxx - romeo / where's your head at / breakaway
space cowboy - i would die 4 u
the streets - weak become heroes (royksopp mix)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

... to the extent I imagine this is less than useless to the original thread-starter.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

Tiny Trendies - The Sky Is Not Crying

1999!

HPSTRKRFT (haitch), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

'beau mot plage' is '99 as well but no big.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

freeform five - no more conversations (richard x rmx)
daso - daybreak
claude von stroke - who's afraid of detroit?
chelonis r jones - le bateau ivre

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

Lex - the Rex The Dog remix of E-Talking is SO MUCH BETTER than the Nite Version it's not funny

WRONG

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

"... to the extent I imagine this is less than useless to the original thread-starter."

hahaha, so true. so i will change the topic: Dance Tracks of the 00's for IDIOTS.

Aditya (dan138zig), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

it's funny cos there will be people who are DEEPLY into dance music (FUNKY HOUSE!) out there who won't know about all this hipstery electro type stuff.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

i would not call much of this stuff particularly hipstery? i guess 'hipster' could apply to any scene you want it to but it's hardly a bastion of impenetrable exclusivity

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

perhaps not... but the list (or what i recognize from it!!) is quite hipstery.

yall need to get outside east london!

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, that kind people probably don't even know the DFA.

Aditya (dan138zig), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

the 'kind of people' who don't know who DFA is virtually the entire music-listening public!

ffs.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

Golden rule for deciding if dance music is any good: Would it fill the floor at Lloyd's #1 on a Saturday night?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

i don't even know what lloyds is, but OTM.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

ellen allien is waaay overrated.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

Underground Resistance - Transitions
DJ Sammy - Boys of Summer
Fragma - Toca's Miracle

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

benny benassi - satisfaction

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

i don't even know what lloyds is, but OTM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetherspoons#Lloyds_No1_Bar

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

oh i hate wetherspoons pubs. this is regardless of the fact that at the weekend we ended up in the one on farringdon road after post-rave swim'n'sauna, at midday on saturday, doing rounds of sambuca :(

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

although when i went back there just before poptimism to pick up my bag, which i'd left under the table, they were playing some ace music! sean paul, j-kwon, ciara and chris brown.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, you went swimming as part of that bender? Awesome.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - yeah, and LFO apparently :-P

these are some weird lists so far though imho... quite a lot of chaff for "essential" tracks. A POX would be fun (has that been done yet?).

Dom you are EVIL. This is like saying rock is only counts if it inspires drunken singalongs & male hugging i.e. the only good rock is OASIS. Fuck that shit.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

there's a swimming pool in lee's apartment complex! i can't swim, so i paddled around for a bit, but it was v refreshing. the sauna was ACE though. proper coals and everything.

xp

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

can you ride a bike?

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

no!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

Argy - Love Dose (Luciano Remix)
Theo Parrish - Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix)

a (rslvd), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

i remember now:

1. doesn't know anything abt UK geography
2. can't swim
3. can't ride a bike
4. owns a radiohead album
-- RJG (RJ...), April 21st, 2006.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

these are some weird lists so far though imho... quite a lot of chaff for "essential" tracks

i doubt there is anybody out there who loves every single track mentioned.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just taking the post the wrong way I think... I was expecting canonical stuff, like "which tracks actually mattered in the '00s" you know?.

I think it's a half-way through the decade feeling that I've just been pondering a bit recently. Anyway carry on regardless. Should post my own list really.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

I was expecting canonical stuff, like "which tracks actually mattered in the '00s" you know?

mattered to who?

nobody here is going to suggest Tomcraft 'Loneliness' or 'Toca's Miracle' or some other dance track that actually got to #1

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

Fragma - Toca's Miracle
-- Tim Finney (tfinne...), August 2nd, 2006.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

'loneliness' is ace!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

blast. Rui Da Silva then.

xpost - yes but it wasn't likely to get mentioned

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Roger Sanchez - I Never Knew (as opposed to 'Another Chance')

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

What's with the "Another Chance" hate, anyway? For a song that doesn't actually go anywhere, it's great.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking of Isolee - Beau Mot Plage (i.e. microhouse that actually got played out a lot in Ibiza allegedly) that sort of thing.

Artful Dodger got to #1 didn't it?

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

that was late '99 iirc.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

Isolee - Beau Mot Plage

is from '99 and already got mentioned

we appear to be avoiding UK Garage related stuff because it's not what springs foremost to mind when 'DAHNCE MUSIC' is mentioned.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

altho i think Jaimeson was the only black person in my list.

Hurrah!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

God I fucking hate that Tomcraft track. Yeah, great bridge between Electro & Hard House. Easy to hear why it worked yeah, but it's just absolute shit.

I loved that Jamieson tune!

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

it's funny cos there will be people who are DEEPLY into dance music (FUNKY HOUSE!) out there who won't know about all this hipstery electro type stuff.

presumably you've had this view since about 1998, the last time nrq deigned to formulate a new opinion on music, but (a) this is changing quite alot, electro is so popular that it's not actually very hip at all, and (b) so fucking what, there are people who are deeply into lots of stuff that isn't discussed here, good luck to them.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

ahem...

DJ Pied Piper & The Master Of Ceremonies – Do You Really Like It?

was what I was confusing as being an Artful Dodger production X)

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Paul Kennedy started a good thread for UKG-based hits (starting from '97 or so running right up to the present) - I recommend this if you want to incorporate any of that in the list (tho obv. being hits-based it omits a lot of grime canon LOL).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

M & S presents The Girl Next Door - Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna)!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

How far will we get before someone mentions 'Never Be Alone' OH BALLS

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

presumably you've had this view since about 1998, the last time nrq deigned to formulate a new opinion on music, but (a) this is changing quite alot, electro is so popular that it's not actually very hip at all, and (b) so fucking what, there are people who are deeply into lots of stuff that isn't discussed here, good luck to them.

-- Ronan (ronan.fitzgerald6NOSPA...), August 2nd, 2006.

a) perhaps it is more popular now (any big chart hits yet?) but this is about the whole decade. example: 'silver screen shower scene' got to #39. think about where dance music used to be, chartwise!

b) well, dude is asking for 'dance music', i'm just noting that ilm has a certain bias that excludes what other people would see as just as important. not worth noting?

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

(any big chart hits yet?)

hello 'hung up'

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

not worth noting unless you are actually one of those other people.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

think about where dance music used to be, chartwise!

#1? #10? #39? #76?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

not worth noting unless you are actually one of those other people.
-- Ronan (ronan.fitzgerald6NOSPA...), August 2nd, 2006.

balderdash

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno. we know what to expect from these threads now don't we? altho perhaps the author didn't and is appalled by the lack of love for Blaze, Ian Pooley and David Guetta.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

i find the most bizarre thing about this the way dom and nrq are insisting that electro and its assorted bobbins is some sort of deeply underground, hipster-faddish scene which no one outside of a cluster of scenesters likes - based entirely on the charts (which have been completely irrelevant as a barometer of any given song's popularity for a good half decade now)! because that couldn't be further from, y'know, actual REAL LIFE.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

REAL LIFE = "small pocket of East London".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

I have no real idea how popular electrohouse and similar (ooh careful now) styles are in the UK. are they more popular than 'Scouse House'? Scooter-type stuff? drum n' bass? nu-indiedance ala Justice and co.?

How do you gauge a style's popularity if not on chart success? No. of words written about it on blogs? Attendance of club nights devoted to it across a number of cities and towns nationwide? Whether Madonna's into it?

(These are genuine questions, not sarcasm btw)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

yes that's right people only listen to electrohouse in east london.

dom that is utter bullshit and you know it!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

yeh there's a few bohos in Islington finally getting into it.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

Attendance of club nights devoted to it across a number of cities and towns nationwide

I don't know anything about dance music anymore but this seems reasonable.

The charts are useful but not for this particular genre where full releases of big tunes happen much later than their peak of popularity. It was ever thus tho.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Dom you should come down to Australia, electro-house is now as big as funky house ever was. TV Rock's "Flaunt It" broke a record for being the Australian-made track in the top 10 for the longest, or something like that.

having said that, the obvious hit that's missing here is "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)"...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Every single house party I've been to with a DJ in the last two years has been playing electrohouse, usually mixed in with big 90s house classics, and these people are not really hipsters. Except maybe one that was playing drum and bass.

To be honest, I think electrohouse's (and minimal house's) popularity not East London, it's Londonwide as far as dedicated dance clubs go. Outside London and maybe a handful of other cities like Leeds I suspect it's all still hard house and trance. I think Ambrose verified this on another thread.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

Every single house party I've been to with a DJ in the last two years

all in East London! ;)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

konal is more convincing than lex here.

i work with real people, londoners 'our age'. one of them likes sway. others like indie. but none have heard of electrohouse. same goes for my islington boho friends.

that said the missus really likes the knife.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

depends what you mean by 'dedicated dance clubs' innit matt!

people dance in all kinds of clubs pt. vIII

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

matt's own house party = in kent!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

Also the word 'electrohouse' doesn't mean much on the street, in my experience, even in hipster terms. Tto the extent that one uber-Nathan Barley friend of mine refused to believe it existed!

But actually go into, like, Fabric or The End or somewhere on a Saturday night and the floating voters are going mad to it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

matt's own house party = in kent!

Matt's own house party = playing Girls Aloud and Nena in case you forget.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

(Steve to be fair they've been mostly in North London or round Islington way, but I see your point)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

i doubt that many people call it 'electrohouse' as such - i know most of my raving crew don't, really.

also we are not factoring in worldwide popularity here. 80,000 europeans converging on sónar!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

I think there's too much negative projection of 'hipster' here anyway. Hipster dance music IS usually v good after all! Perhaps there's some great 'funky house' from last few years crying out to be loved and listed. It depends whether you want 'essential listening' based on chart success, actual exciting production/concept behind the music or both.

Meanwhile...

Aditya (dan138zig), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

But actually go into, like, Fabric or The End or somewhere on a Saturday night and the floating voters are going mad to it.

there's an argument that in those clubs people would be going mad to whatever was playing (e.g. presumably the dnb nights still do well) but i do believe the popularity of electrohouse et al to be as strong as any dance scene not bothered about chart success for attention, respect etc. anyway

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

To turn Enrique's point around, judging the popularity of electro-house now on the basis of some idea of its former cliqueishness is the equivalent of judging the popularity of trance circa 1999 based on the success of early Eye Q/Harthouse, or French house circa 2000 based on the success of the Motorbass album.

I always think the "in" sound - in the popular sense not the elite fashion sense - is whatever Ministry of Sound are filling their compilations with. Noticed how they've now started releasing "German" Ministry of Sound comps internationally?

"I'm just taking the post the wrong way I think... I was expecting canonical stuff, like "which tracks actually mattered in the '00s" you know?"

OTM

Yeah but what the fuck are these if not tracks listed above???

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Indie-dance is usually more bar music than 'dahnce' in the sense of what gets played at actual house nights (outside london) imo.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

What don't Ministry Of Sound release in their quest for cash?

Golden rule for deciding if dance music is any good: Would it fill the floor at Lloyd's #1 on a Saturday night?

-- Dom Passantino

so basically all of Berlin/Germany = wrong, NOT DANCE?

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

They don't have chain bars in Germany?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

What's the golden rule for rock music, that it must be frequently chosen on a pub jukebox?

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

dom i don't even know what you're arguing - that electrohouse is not very good (in which case please back up with examples) or not very popular (in which case you have been proved wrong anyway, and if you don't believe me i am dragging you to fabric - in CENTRAL london, incidentally! - next time we rave there and you shall see for yourself)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

there isn't a golden rule.

but if someone came along and asked for the essential rock trakcs, and were given almost exclusively neo-post-punk choices, then it would be right to interject: WHAT??? YOU OVERLOOK STEREOPHONICS?!?!?!

or whatever.

xpost

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

electrohouse is less popular than rave and handbag and ukg and trance, even if it does fill fabric.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

This is getting very silly.

(xpost - that is true, but virtually all 00s dance music is less popular than its 90s equivalent, except possibly UKG)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

stereophonics are essential to nothing. it would be perfectly justifiable to overlook them. i mean, it would be justifiable to purge them from our history, stalin style, and send them to the gulags.

The above argument is so soul suckingly awful, I really wish people who ask bland leading questions, which lead to nothing since the people in question have no agenda or actual opinion if you remove their opposition to some assumed ILM opinion. Of course this assumed ILM opinion changes on every thread, or sometimes within the same thread.

I mean honestly, people are going to start checking out minimal for the refuge from these fucking awful electrohouse threads with arguments that NOBODY COULD CONCEIVABLY GIVE A SHIT ABOUT, even the people arguing!

x-post thank god for Job's spring clean on this atrocity

they also have apparently begun a thursday night called "i love music"!!!!!!!!! (no word on the music policy)

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

I keep forgetting that electro-house doesn't necessarily have the chart-pop cottage industry elsewhere that it has in Australia.

There are a whole host of local producers making top-ten hits on the back of a rather commercial version of this sound - Bodyrockers, TV Rock, Rogue Traders, Vandalism, Dirty South, Mr. Timothy/T-Funk.

Australian dance music may possibly be at its highest ebb in terms of sales.

Does Galang qualify as dance?

Aditya (dan138zig), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

It's tricky i.e. why would you include 'Galang' but not 'real' dancehall, bashment or hip-hop?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:14 (nineteen years ago)

bingo. I almost prefer keeping this to just house and techno b/c if the Aditya goes wider his list will invariably end up hideously tokenist.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:25 (nineteen years ago)

electrobash?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone who has heard even a random sampling of modern dancehall should recognise immediately that M.I.A.'s sonics are 99.999999% dancehall. With little bits of hip hop, r&b and reggaeton thrown in yeah, but no more than any other modern dancehall record.

There is 0% dahnce in there. And 0% grime for that matter.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

The above argument is so soul suckingly awful, I really wish people who ask bland leading questions, which lead to nothing since the people in question have no agenda or actual opinion if you remove their opposition to some assumed ILM opinion. Of course this assumed ILM opinion changes on every thread, or sometimes within the same thread.

i'm sorry ronan, i'm sure this thread would be much more interesting for the person who started it if it was a context-free list of records, oh fucking yes.

let's not for a moment discuss why uk garage is being excluded because it just goes without saying that 'dance' means, well, not garage obviously for some reasons that we'll complacently leave out, nor the kind of house music that lots of people (maybe the thread-starter? maybe people the thread-starter knows!?) consider the mainstream of dance music.

because that'd be meta.

another list is just what ilm needs.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

what do YOU think the reasons for excluding UK Garage (or US Garage for that matter) are?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know, it's clearly a leading question...

actually i DON'T know. i'd like this kinda thread to educate me (and take me on a journey) as to WHY i lost interest, or moreover why i shouldn't have ('i' meaning lots of other people too, kind of) in fashionable dancing music.

i think scare-quotes electrohouse is kind of breaking. i don't dislike (what i've heard of) a lot of what's upthread, and i'd like to hear more, but there are too few shit-cheap telstar electrohouse comps, you know?

but yes i dunno, is it the rnb texture/mcing that people don't like about ukg? not tracky enough? it's misplaced purism, isn't it?

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think excluding ukg from this thread = disliking it. it's more that while yeah, if you think about it, it IS dance music, no one ever ever refers to it in those terms. they call it 'garage' or 'hip hop' or 'r&b' or, if they want to get all umbrella, 'urban'. whereas if they say 'dance' they will be referring to the myriad forms of house, techno, d'n'b and so on.

i mean, the 'urban' umbrella and the 'dance' umbrella are very different things. obviously. i don't know all that many people who really love both.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

"why is funky house excluded" is the slightly more interesting question, but the answer is pretty simple ("because it's fucking shit")

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

misplaced racism more like

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

i could have sworn that garage had something to do with, well, HOUSE MUSIC, and, that ukg learnt lots from, uh, D'N'B... but i stopped caring in '98.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

actually i DON'T know. i'd like this kinda thread to educate me (and take me on a journey) as to WHY i lost interest, or moreover why i shouldn't have ('i' meaning lots of other people too, kind of) in fashionable dancing music.

This is the problem, you and Steve are in exactly the same boat in this regard, with respect it leads to these awful arguments which essentially are like

A: "But why is this X excluded here?"
B: "I don't know, perhaps because of this?"
A: "What about Y, could that be fitted in here?"
B: "Y is quite similar to X yes, but people on this thread seem to be discussing Z"
A: "I like neither Y, X nor Z, apart from the following, nor can I make any argument as to why"
B: "I just don't understand why X is left out"
A: "Yes why is that?"
B: "Perhaps it's because of snobbery?"
A: "Perhaps that's the case, logically one would assume M, N or O should be included here, though I don't like those either so...."

the reality is people who like trendy electrohouse or even minimal are FAR closer to trance and funky house and chart dance music than people who listen to zero dance music at all. the lines are not half as significant as people make out so I'll not take this rather silly accusation of snobbery anyway

taking sides, people entirely removed from all dance music vs people who like electrohouse, I believe I can tell which group is closer to funky house, I mean honestly.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

if we were to include a list of funky house here, who could do it? I'd be waiting quite a while for yours nrq anyway, that's for sure.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

My position is different to Enrique's so don't include me in your argument there. I'm not asking other people to explain why I might've lost interest in certain types of music. I know why!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

ro, i listen to more electrohouse than most people.

not as much as djs-who-work-in-record-shops.

but still.

i'm not 'entirely removed from all dance music' anyway.

and whatever anyway, i listened to a lot of it for a long time so i think i have the bona fides you seem to be asking for in the matter of: why no uk garage in this list?

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

NRQ for what it's worth I didn't post garage b/c it didn't seem within the remit of the threadstarter's initial question. And b/c I've posted variances on my "essential garage tunes" list on ILM about a dozen times.

That list I made for the FT article is pretty good for 00-early 02 I think - only a handful of good 2-step tracks came out after that anyway.

"kaos - feel like i feel"

Ha ha yes. I wish this was a canonical choice.

Was the Kaos album worth buying BTW? Have I asked that before?

I was also thinking there should be a Classic-ish track here somewhere, but as good as they are it's hard to signal out "anthems", at least for me. Maybe:

Mike Dixon - House Of Mouths (D's Piece Of The Pie Remix)

Actually the "Where U At" acapella is probably the most appropriate!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

Moloko - Forever More (Francois K Mix)
Beanfield - Tides (Carl Craig Mix)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 4 August 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

And maybe i'll change my classics-ish choice to:

Kenny Hawkes & Louise Carver - Play The Game (Phil Weeks Robsoul Vocal Mix) - that's the one with the big horns yeah?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 4 August 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

kaos album NOT worth buying. "feel like i feel" is almost shockingly better than everything else on there.

west coast / boompty house sort of defies anthems. there was a bit in mixmag awhile back that was like "this derrick carter mix set (ministry sessions) is awesome, but why does two hours of music feel like five songs???" and yeah, that's sort of how it is. interchangable tools, not anthems. the triumph of tracky house.

that said, i think the obvious boompty anthem is either "where u at" or losoul's remix of "turning orange (to please u)" by the freaks ... both of which are pre-2000??

"house of mouths" is a good answer ... maybe "fantasize" by rob mello?? huge track except i can't remember what it sounds like!!!! "freaky mike" by del costa??

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Friday, 4 August 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah this is exactly what I was thinking. Actually I notice there are no Perlon suggestions in this thread probably for the same reason.

Vahid did you hear that 2005 Style of Eye single "Hydroponic"? Or Eclat's "I Don't Laa"? Both are great psychedelic boompty - and as long as most Villalobos tracks!

perlon / boompty crossover anthem = "bushes"!! (not 2000s, sadly)

Is electro for boring bearded blokes in anoraks?

Electro can be annoying when it's cheap, but there are incredible breaks and electro tunes. When a track is innovative and tight without being cheesy, then it can kick on the dance floor. Girls love it! And women are extremely important on a dance floor. Sexy girls I need!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Many xposts - The racks in a mainstream record store (say HMV Oxford Street) seem to me to be a good way of seeing what dance music is popular. (More revealing than a specialist shop?) And there are still acres of undifferentiated 'House' then a small Electro section, then a growing Leftfield section (all three of which may contain electro-house). Usually a lot of Urban/R&B - where grime/ukg tends to end up and a small d&b bit. Techno still seems to have disapeared as a label. No sign of MINIMAL at all. Which is all a bit weird, innit?

So some 'house' house 00s TUNES! anyway.

Nightlife - Previews - Ellen Allien

SECTION: Pg. 119

LENGTH: 441 words

Bugged Out, at the End, Saturday

Since championing the early techno sound in her home town of Berlin in the early '90s, Ellen Allien has pushed the electronic scene forward with the determination of a hyperactive person obsessed. Her own production (check her essential 'Orchestra of Bubbles', a recent collaborative long player with Apparat; we're caning 'Retina' in the office) flits between melancholic electronic folk and hard-edged dancefloor business, while her record label, B*Pitch Control, is simply one of the finest around. As for her DJ sets, well, might we suggest you rock on down to the Bugged Out hop to find out for youself?

Your label has boasted some of the biggest records over the past year or so. Do you feel pressure to constantly find the new 'Washing Up' by Tomas Andersson?

It shows me that a good track finds its way, no matter what. Thanks to Tiga for the remix! A label needs a track like this in order to survive. And it was nice to hear the track at festivals and see people singing along, recognising it - that's what makes a hit. This connects people, it's fun and has a lot of positive energy.

How do you find running your own label?

The team is great, so it's not a lot of work for me any more. It was hard to build the label, to find the right people. But now the basis is there. You have to have good people to work with, if not, it's really stressful.

Do you drop a lot of your own music in your sets?

Yeah, I play a lot of B*Pitch releases ... because I am a true fan of our music!

What's best about Berlin's scene?

Its diversity and development, its change. Everything is moving. Everybody is moving, too. People who come here push things forward. Art is big here. Berlin lets you breathe and is still affordable for artists. There isn't a lot of money here, but a lot of vibe and energy and ideas.

Does minimal house put you to sleep?

No, just boring minimal. Then I really have to go home. I love hypnotic minimal though. When it's trippy, groovy ... Then I cannot stop dancing.

They say Germans don't have a sense of humour. Tell us a joke.

The British humour is so much better indeed. When I hang out with Brits, it's always fun. There is definitely German humour as well, it's just kind of hard to understand. It's very dry, but funny.

Describe your DJ sets.

Hypnotic dance.

Interview: Simone Baird.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

HMV may not label stuff "minimal" but they have had massive backstock of Crosstown Rebels and Get Physical and big supporting promotions (ie bigger than any record shop would ever have, entire back catalogue big) for those two labels in the last year, all through Britain and Ireland.

-- The Lex (alex.macpherso...), August 4th, 2006. (The Lex)

I've noticed that posts from the last couple of weeks are unsearchable. I don't know if this is a recent development or if it's normally the case.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

"but figure why/how ukg is now apparently quite widely seen as 'urban/rnb'. these sorts of mutation are interesting! i think so anyway."

A couple of reasons I think:

1) the fact that there were quite a few artists who were switching between UKG and R&B - not just Mis-Teeq, but Artful Dodger etc. Actually there are artists who've switched between UKG and house (MJ Cole obv, and a lot of producers like Grant Nelson have now gone back to making house entirely) but these tended to be the more unknown 'scene' producers - i.e. the exact people your other posts imply are less important to people's understanding of dance music.

2) grime was so obviously hip hop-aligned that it has retrospectively made the whole post-speed garage narrative seem more urban-based.

3) 2-step is just so easily co-opted into an R&B context - would we consider Usher's "You've Got It Bad" or Jem's "They" to be "dance music" over R&B?

Having said all the above, I do think it's wrong to over-emphasise the "urban"-ness of UKG - precisely because I don't think you can ignore the way this music was treated by people actually into the music as a scene (i.e. going out to clubs), as opposed to the hypothetical kids on the bus or Sharons & Traceys at Wetherspoons Pubs (sounds like the equivalent of the pubs in The Rock in Sydney). Despite the prominence of vocals, the majority of 2-step tracks weren't actually deathless chartbound pop songs set to the catapult their singers into successful R&B careers, but functional dance tracks designed to be played in the mix (ha ha you coould probably argue the same about R&B sets though I guess!)..

For me, leaving UKG out of this thread is entirely practical: my top 25 list for UKG would be as near and dear to my heart as my top 25 list of all house/techno, if not more so. I'd be here all day - and that list has been made countless times in other threads anyway.

omg wtf no soundmurderer?

danski (danski), Saturday, 5 August 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Aditya, don't take this the wrong way... but why don't YOU choose your favorite dance tracks. If the blog post is supposed to be YOUR favorites, then it would make most sense if you just made the mix or collection and THEN asked us what we thought. But perhaps I am being too rough on you-- I understand the desire for input.

trees (treesessplode), Saturday, 5 August 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

No, it's not like that. My last post didn't have any corellation with the thread. I only wanna know if those compilations worth buying or not, because I don't want to waste my money for 3 discs of junk. I only know 1 or 2 artists from those comps so I don't know what to expect. Do they sound like The Streets?

Aditya (dan138zig), Saturday, 5 August 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

It depends: the beats often sound like the beats on the 1st Streets album, but otherwise most everything is different. Imagine "Has It Come To This" with a bigger bassline and female diva singing and the occasional hype MC chanting stuff over the type.

Both mixes look like decent overviews w/o being knock-out winners.

Sambuca - Wideboys

This song is so due an ironic revival.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 5 August 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

"pure garage platinum" has about 5 good tracks per disc.

"pure garage classics" has about 10 good tracks per disc on discs 1 and 2, but disc 3 is straight garbage (well, except for dizzee ... and jon e cash ...)

buyer beware!!

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Saturday, 5 August 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah that was my assessment- the first two discs of Pure Garage Classics is a better 2-step summary but the third disc is pretty poor.

from Wiki: Often, a person will post a sincere message about which he is emotionally sensitive. Skillful trolls know that an easy way to upset the person is to falsely claim that they are a "troll." In forums where most users are similar to each other, outsiders may be perceived as trolls simply because they do not fit into the social norms of that group. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between a user who merely has different values, views, or ideas, and a user who is intentionally trolling. This can lead to genuinely hostile behavior, including flame wars.

No, but that looks ace, is that new?

Aditya The Sound of the Pirates comps Jess is referring to were released on Locked On in 2000 and 2001 respectively - first one mixed by Zed Bias and the second one mixed by Ed Case. The Zed Bias mix is probably the best single-disc garage mix ever.
