Is 50 cent the most overrated rapper ever?

Why have I heard more than one person compare 50 cent to 2pac and Biggie? By what stretch of the imagination does he even come close? What is the big deal?

Alec Quig (lets jump now), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

You have taken a brave stand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

Taking over-rating 50 Cent to a whole new level
50 cent-whats the deal?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 26 September 2006 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

HELL NO. He gets mad hate...

The most overrated rapper is without a doubt, unquestionably... 2Pac!

Colin Cassidy (Colin Cassidy), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 04:04 (nineteen years ago)

i always thought it was biggie.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 04:04 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, I wouldn't mind standing corrected. I just don't understand what the big deal is.

I'm not huge on 2pac, with some exceptions, but I also don't see how one can listen to "Unbelievable" or "One More Chance" by Biggie and not see, plainly, that he's the shite.

You know who else is overrated? Fuckin' Plato.

max (maxreax), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

i had a dream about biggie last night, he was still alive and had found a bunch of unreleased stevie nicks instrumentals and was planning an entire elbum around it - he told me there was a song where i rapped over some bluegrass and he had already put it on "his mixtape" that was floating around - he owned a huge loft space thing where his whole posse lived and partied and somebody handed me a bag full of 20 ecstasy pills and didn't even expect me to pay for them - then i woke up!!! DAAAAAAAMN

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

textbook freud stuff in other words.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

2Pac -- amazing writer, lousy rapper.

Biggie was amazing any which way you look at it.

50 Cent is a comedian and a pin-up. Otherwise, he just sucks. In understand his appeal, but as I once described him in a review, he's hte most non-descript major rapper ever.

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

Biggie has quite possibly the very best flow and lyrics i've ever heard, his charisma is what I love most about the guy and the fact that he can laugh at himself.. Anyone that can shout;

RUN FROM THE COPS, FUCK DAT, NIGGA IM TOO FAT, I'LL FUCK AROUND AND GET AN ASTHMA ATTACK..

is alright by me.

50 is bad though in a year no one will care about him.

Rowlando for the kidz (Sam Rowlands), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

dude sounded like he was choking on bacon. he was good but not TEH GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

better than tupac and 50, sure.

Notorious R.I.P. wrote the line:

I love that line!

Two guys that I do enjoy, but are probably the most overrated that come to mind are Kool Keith and MF Doom.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Hey MF Doom is iffy now but he definitely has had his moments.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Kool Keith too obv but that Wire cover story left a bad taste

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

wtf? I didn't see that Kool Keith Wire bit - what bugged you about it? I gotta say "The Return of Dr. Octagon" is pretty lame, the music is just terrible and mixed WAY TOO LOUD, really overbearing. The Project Polaroid album is better, but still not up there with his best stuff, sadly.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

i like MF Doom quite a bit, but there's like tons of indie type dudes that would say he's, you know, better than like Ice Cube or Biggie or whoever....

Kool Keith, I sort of realized after a point that I really only liked the original Dr. Octagon album and the Ultramagnetic stuff.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I agree w/ you.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

oh man not me, I got much love for Sex Style and Lost in Space (and Spankmaster!), I probably listen to those more than Doc Oc.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

i like lost in space okay. i forgot abt. that one.

i dunno. sex style and dr. dooom, i feel like i need to take a shower after i listen to those records. has any rapper ever made sex feel so..unappealing as kool keith....maybe nas some of his creepy ass gross stuff like where he digs up graves to make that frankenstein hottie or farts in a girls face in that one mixtape song i heard.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

diff't strokes, I guess.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

but tell me abt this Wire story deej

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

it was written by someone who doesnt like rap. i donno i skimmed it in a record store and the writer's take on the history of rap or whatever seemed unfamiliar with rap

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

charlie rose trying to interview dangermouse was pretty funny in that way.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

haha i didnt know he had. i want to see this

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

?!? yeah say what?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

i can't remember when it was...maybe a couple weeks ago. i just happened upon it flipping channels.

charlie was asking his typical "deep" questions. dangermouse seemed kinda uncomfortable. the best was when charlie was out of material and just read every song title off the back of the CD case, then asked him what those titles "meant to him"

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Dr. Dooom is also a great Kool Keith record ... big drop-off after that (save for the Analaog Brothers record, which is just funny).

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

I get the impression that the "safe" position on 50 is that he has immense talent, and that it's evident on his "unreleased" pre-shooting album and pre-Aftermath mixtapes, but that he intentionally holds back on record because he's got a formula that sells and now a whole company/cadre in G-Unit to sell it for him, so why fuck with it?

I see Biggie's a small target here. Not that he needs my defense, but:

Then came the worst date, May 21st
2:19, that's when my momma's water burst
No spouse in the house so she drove herself
to the hospital, to see if she could get a little help
Umbilical cord's wrapped around my neck
I'm seein' my death and I ain't even took my first step
And now I made it out, I'm bringin' mad joy
The doctor looked and said, "He's gonna be a Bad Boy"

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

for the record I find 50's rapping pathetic, I dunno how highly rated he is though... he'll be gone in a year or two, thankfully.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

I mean he's already completed the final "rapper makes shitty autobio film" stage of his career, so he's got nowhere else to go.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

isn't he already gone?

PappaWheelie has no answers to any question that requires actual thought (PappaW, Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Is he the most popular and critically acclaimed rapper ever? If not, then, no.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno I think we could easily post loads of Biggie lyrics to prove that he isnt the most over rated of all time, guy fucking earnt his top five place without a shadow of a doubt. I love MF Doom but he's not better than Biggie buy any means.

Every rapper mentioned in this topic is better than 50 Cent though, I think he could have been going for a lot lot longer if he hadn't completely flooded the market with tens of albums by all his friends on his label, all rapping about exactly the same subject matter.

Apart from of course Young Hot Rod, who is the future!

Rowlando for the kidz (Sam Rowlands), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

ROFLZ @ Young Hot Rod

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

I would honestly make a case for 50 being better than Tupac. 50 is funnier, has more charisma, a nicer flow, and isn't such a cheeseball, for a start.

BIGGIE is here (with Jay-Z, Big Boi, Big L, etc)..........

50 Cent is here (with Pun, Ghost etc)...........

Tupac is here with Juelz Santana and Papoose.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

oh come on.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno this is one of my favourite biggie verses, a snippet from the song "The What". I think it's probabily better than entire albums 50 has put out, although it loses something when written rather than heard:

"So instead of makin hoes suck my dick up
I used to do stick-up
Cause hoes is irritatin like the hic-CUPS
Excuse me, flows just grow through me
Like trees to branches
Cliffs to avalanches
It's the praying mantis
Deep like the mind of Farrakhan
A motherfuckin rap phenomenon"

Rowlando for the kidz (Sam Rowlands), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

No mention of 50's mentor Eminem yet? If not THE most overrated, certainly in the top ten.

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Cause hoes is irritatin like the hic-CUPS

yeah this is one of my favourite moments in rap
loads of the others are biggie related too

i dont really see how eminem's overrated, unless you're judging his entire body of work
if you judge him on just his best tracks he easily justifies his reputation

robin (robin), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

PaulHW OTM

50 Cent is a superior MC to 2Pac.

Christgau agrees with me on this check the reviews:

Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. [Interscope, 1991]
"Keep Ya Head Up" Choice Cuts

Me Against the World [Interscope, 1995]
Tough-guy sentimentality is an old story in American culture, but self-pity this rank is usually reserved for teen romances and tales of brave avant-gardists callously rejected by the mass media. His I-love-Mom rings true because Mom was no saint, and his respect for old G's seems genuine, probably because they told him how smart he was. But whether the metaphor be dead homies or suicide threat, the subtext of his persecution complex is his self-regard. What's doubly galling is that these are essential hip hop themes--as Ice Cube and B.I.G. have made all too vivid, it is persecution that induces young black men to kill each other and themselves. That such themes should rise to the top of the charts with this witless exponent of famous-for-being-famous is why pop fans decry the mass media. C+

Greatest Hits [Death Row/Interscope, 1998]
or anyway, greatest myths ("God Bless the Dead," "Keep ya Head Up") *

AND THEN 50 CENT:

Get Rich or Die Tryin' [Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, 2003]
Gets no cuter as his character unfolds ("What Up Gangsta," "Patiently Waiting") **

Guess Who's Back? [Full Clip, 2003]
Has a mouth on him, which with mix-tape beats he'd better ("U Not Like Me," "Rotten Apple") *

The Massacre [Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, 2005]
He's impossible to love but hard to resist, and though that may not be what he'd prefer, hard to resist will do. All the ugly gangsta lies are here, especially as regards the brutalization of women and the business of death. But they're incidental to the mood of the piece, which is friendly, relaxed, good-humored, and in the groove. As cute as Jay-Z if somewhat less intelligent, 50 throws a party that doesn't quit. I note for the record that Dr. Dre claims production on just two tracks while Eminem takes four, and that "Candy Shop" and "Just a Lil Bit" are both by "Scott Storch for Tuff Jew Productions." A-

Basically rates some 50 mixtape as better than Pac's Greatest Hits. And I agree.

50 is obviously no Biggie Smalls but he has a good voice and charisma.

E did you ever read that '50 cent, fat cat...' book that came out a year or so ago? Its kind of terrible as far as typos and some of the info seems pretty damn anecdotal but regarding the stories behind 80s drug kingpins i thought it was interesting. But I was wondering what you thought of his take on Pac (and this relates to pappawheelie's q too)

also most his shit is strangely cold & technical

YES. I've had this feeling forever but as simple as it is I could never quite articulate it. The feeling you get routinely from most great MCs of lyrics just pouring out of them(not talking passion, more like purpose) is relatively rare with him, especially on Life After Death. You can't fuck with several moments of perfection but the G.O.A.T. accolades blindsided me the first time I heard them and I'm still kind of baffled. Pac is miles ahead at any rate.

It's an obv Beastie Boys rip (like a lot of 87 era NWA), and obv inspired much of Sir Mix-a-Lot's 88 stuff ala Posse on Broadway

Can someone post that picture of 2Pac's shopping list from circa 1995? That's my favourite rap thing of the year so far, it's in that new fucking coffee table book about him.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah he's the dude who did the 'rough guide to hip-hop'
Yeah I don't much like him.

as much as i do like biggie...this is a good point.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Then again B.I.G. was rapping about cold shit. Kind of fitting.

His sense of humor and charisma lent a certain warmth to proceedings though.

Colin Cassidy (Colin Cassidy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

The cold technical thing sort of goes hand in hand w/ the effortless professionalism. I think biggie's emotional connection tended to be more lyrical but he had his moments (and other than juicy, that opening on "Sky's the Limit" or the "I don't wanna live no more" on "Everyday Struggle.") But certainly Pac's voice was warmer and came across as less performative.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

uh to be clear by 'more lyrical' i don't mean 'than Pac' but 'than via Big's own vocal style'

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

i've always kinda thought that BIG was great despite his voice.

pac had a great, natural voice. tho i'm not as much a fan of his.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

I think I prefer Big too, although I've listened to more Pac lately just because I never overdosed on his shit like I did Big's.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

i should really give 2pac another try.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

B.I.G. sounds either very warm, or ice cold depending on the song.

It's kind of interesting, there's no in between he's either hot or cold.

How do you guys think they compare beat-wise? I think Pac's beats are pretty awful even intolerable. While B.I.G. has some of the finest production in Hip Hop.

Colin Cassidy (Colin Cassidy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really care to compare their beats, but Pac had some great beats. Speaking of, its cool to see Daz getting more dap for his tracks these days.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

i don't get this cold and technical stuff,i'm getting more into tupac as time goes on but the reason he's never been among my favourites is because his stuff seems more like a performance to me,and his raps are technically amazing but a little cold, despite the emotive subject matter

i think if you separate the themes from the style pac's stuff is far more performative (never heard that word before)

robin (robin), Thursday, 28 September 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

what do ya'll mean when you say "technical" about biggie?

there are quite a few really cornball pac songs, but he also has some really amazing ones ("so many tearz," "how do u want it," temptations").

his production can also veer onto the way wack side - many of them are just 4-measure looped beats that go on ad infinitum with little/no development ("ambitionz az a ridah"). kind of cheap. most of the time, this is really cheap, but sometimes, it's really good (again, "how do u want it").

I'm sure hell has like five of them.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 28 September 2006 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

man "Ambitionz Az A Ridah" is one of my favorite beats of all time, that snare is so harsh. it's nice when rap beats aren't just 4-bar loops but they can be great when they are too.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 28 September 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

"it was written by someone who doesnt like rap. i donno i skimmed it in a record store and the writer's take on the history of rap or whatever seemed unfamiliar with rap"

that piece, if you mean the cover story was by hsa hsu whos definitely not unfamiliar with rap or its history.

i think 50 cent is a pretty good rapper when he wants to be. the mixtapes and the first album were mostly great. he has a somewhat lacksadacsical way of rapping, which makes it look like hes not trying (and sometimes i dont think he is) but its quite deceptive i think. hes not the greatest MC but most of the technically brilliant rappers of the past 5-10 years dont seem able to write very good songs (then again a lot of the shitty ones dont either).

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 28 September 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

maybe nas some of his creepy ass gross stuff like where he digs up graves to make that frankenstein hottie

Er, the point of that tune was that you can never find a perfect woman, which is what Frankenstein thing was supposed to be about, not sex.

But I agree with you that eroticism isn't really Nas's forte.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

that piece, if you mean the cover story was by hsa hsu whos definitely not unfamiliar with rap or its history.

Nah as Jess pointed out it was by Peter Shapiro who wrote the 'rough guide to hip-hop' which i'm not a fan of either. I like Hua Hsu!

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

The Nas eating excrement lyric is pretty fucking wack.
