1. Some cajun food is OK, but keep the crawfish away from me. They're insects that live in the mud. Horrible nasty little vermin that actually *taste* like mud if you don't season them right. Sometimes you bite into one to find that it still has mud in it. Oh horrible, most horrible.

And gumbo? This is not cuisine. This is what prisoners and exiles found in the swamp they'd been banished to. Oh, look, okra! Bleeeargh.

Well, it ain't the big show that is the Oscars, never is. Still, last year was much better. Steve Carrel delivered a classic speech. And the year before, you had Jack Nicholson saying something like, "Sorry, I'm on Xanax." This year, Hugh Laurie got the biggest laughs, and he's not even a comedian. Something is wrong.

Ally, if you are seriously paying 20k to be at any university please ask them for a refund as you're clearly learning sweet fuck all.

P.S. The problem with smashing up MacDonalds is that those who are in the lowest paid positions in these shops, the lower class, the uneducated, the coloured, immigrants - those that British society generally deems only worthy to work as cleaners - are now having to mop up glass. At any rate, this fucks the gesture royally and, besides which, as much a symbol of American multinationalism that MacDonalds may be I personally don't want any fucker telling me where I can and cannot eat. Surely this boils down to Facism rather than someone simply being concerned enough about de-forestation or factory farming to put a brick through a fast food restuarant's window?

I'm sure he values his own "wit". huh. there is photo of him, somewhere, I think he has a middle parting and a pale complexion and a fat friend with a beard. he likes to "challenge" people, here, in a similar way to momus but yawn etc. I think he's just bored, a lot of the time, and there's nothing wrong with that.
will you come out for a drink, with us, the next time he's in glasgow, lumsden?

There is one easter egg found on each of the discs included in the 2-disc Special Edition. The first (also available on the single disc version) is a cheat code for the video game that will allow the player to play as Bizarro. The second egg features several takes of Kevin Spacey yelling "wrong". There is also a hidden recipe for "Lex Luthor's special kryptonite chicken gumbo", calling for "at least 9 tablespoons of chem-light juice" for "flavoring and color".

It sounds like Kenan has only eaten crawfish like one time, made by someone who didn't know how to clean them properly, and has formed his opinion around that one instance. Kind of sad, but hey, more crawfish for me.

absurd. I have disliked more crawfish than you will ever enjoy, bro. I'm from south texas and southern louisiana, and if I shit on cajun food, it's not because I have not eaten enough of it.

kenan, Sunday, 1 April 2007 06:41 (eighteen years ago)

also, cut me some slack, because all my family in south louisiana and east tx are real honest-to-god true-to-life hills-have-eyes hicks, and i want to get as far away from them as i can, and sometimes that means being angry at gumbo.

kenan, Sunday, 1 April 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

for heaven's sake whatever you do don't blame the gumbo!

1st "Tomb Raider" I dug loads back when it came out, I got the 2nd one, but it was just annoying. "Angel of Darkness", where they tried to make her into a menacing goth thug thirtysomething woman who goes around breaking people's necks for lulz (a slight exaggeration, I admit) would have been great if they'd actually bothered to finish it before releasing it (there's like 60% more stuff in the game itself that's inaccessible, and more stuff still that got cut out) - I keep meaning to pick up "legend" for cheap if I see it, but the cutscenes I saw on "youtube" were so fuck-awful it's putting me off.

But you're merely validating my point. Run DMC are the figure to a ground littered with crappy rap. And as much as I love them, they never recorded anything to match "Looking for the Perfect Beat" or a dozen or so world historic Sugarhill singles.

Too bad electro had to fade for hip-hop. But thank gawd the Latin freestyle brigade grabbed the torch (guess what else I prefer to Run DMC?).

If we insist on having a persona-handle front-and-center in a piece of music, at least "poverty tourism" and "third world democracy" admits to the existence of poverty and the third world.

I was part of the hipster crowd that chuckled, "LOL, Beasties" until Check Your Head became a sleeper hit, then I went backwards and got Paul's Boutique and my mind was summarily blown. I still think that there's rarely been a one-two punch as powerful as License to Ill and Check Your Head, one from which the Beasties themselves have yet to recover, although they came close on Hello Nasty (in retrospect an uneasy merger of CYH and PB).

I mean yeah, it was on the radio every five minutes and isn't terrible exactly but it ain't Shannon neitha.

I hate the production. SOS Band, Alexander O'Neal... All that shit sounded way too slick at the time but seems to get a lotta love nowadays. Jam/Lewis = way overrated IMO. Mobbed up shit.

Bit MOR=sounding, buppie 80's shit really for the Dennis Hopson haircut crowd.

Anyone really cool was trippin heavy on "Somebody Else's Guy" right about then, which blows this shit to pieces. That doesn't completely invalidate this piece of music of course, but just sayin, if you was around then, you woulda been into something a bit cooler I am guessing. not hatin, lovin.

s1ocki, Monday, 4 June 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

that slate link is so awesome i want to shoot its author in the face.

just in case anyone clicked but couldnt make it through the entire thing:

"But there's more than a passing resemblance between this narrative and classic right-wing populism. Like "Bluto" Blutarsky rallying his fraternity to ruin the homecoming parade, crafty conservatives have been riling up middle America for decades against champagne-sipping limousine liberals. The boys in Animal House aren't, say, fighting tooth and nail for a living-wage ordinance. These mostly privileged young men are fighting for their right to party—a libertarian cause if there ever was one. And consider that the villain in Wedding Crashers is a Kennedy clone, a cultured environmentalist who hides his woman-hating ways behind earnest platitudes."

i want to post a youtube vid that disproves any anti-fletch argument within 30 seconds but i cant cuz the sites down or something :(

In the last five years, many groups (Radiohead, Spiritualized, Super Furry Animals) have been accused of ushering in the new prog. On '10,000Hz...', Air actually do. The cover (featuring our two heroes - Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel - on the bridge of a space station in the middle of a bright red desert) offers the first clue. The last time anyone saw artwork like this, it was 1973, and Yes had just begun to terrorise the known universe with 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' - the least cool album ever made.

The characters Rosenberg and Goldstein in Harold and Kumar Go to the White Castle are a reference to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. This was done with the intent to create an alternate film with these characters that takes place in the same time period much like the way that the play "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead" takes place in the same time period as "Hamlet".

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

I was under the impression the H&K "sequel" was going to be Rosenberg and Goldstein Go To Hotdog Heaven (intersecting with H&K, direct Rosencrantz and Gildenstern takeoff) but apparently that's not happening now - haertbroken yet again.

nickalicious, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

nooOOoOooo .... also:

In the video game The Curse of Monkey Island, Slappy Cromwell, a character that re-wrote Shakespeare (as Speare), reveals one of his lines in Act IV Scene 8 to be 'Join me Rosencrantz! I am your FATHER!'. In itself this also references Star Wars.

Jessie is a friend,
yeah, I know she's been
a good friend of mine
But lately something's changed
that ain't hard to define
Jessie's got herself some boobs
and I want to make them mine
And she's watching them with those eyes
And she's lovin' them with that body,
I just know it
Yeah 'n' she's holding them
in her arms late,
late at night

You know, I wish that I had Jessie's boobs,
I wish that I had Jessie's boobs
Where can I find a boobs like that
I play along with the boobs,
there doesn't seem to be
a reason to change
You know, I feel so dirty
when they start being all boobly
I wanna tell them that I love them,
but the point is probably moot
'Cos she's watching them with those eyes
And she's lovin' them with that body,
I just know it
And she's holding them
in her arms late, late at night

Like Jessie's boobs,
I wish that I had Jessie's boobs
Where can I find a boobs,
where can I find a boobs like that
And I'm lookin' in the mirror all the time,
wondering what boobs don't boobs in boobs
I've been funny,
I've been cool with the lines
Ain't that the way
love supposed to be
Tell me, where can I find a woman like that
Solo
You know, I wish that I had Jessie's boobs,
I wish that I had Jessie's boobs
I want Jessie's boobs,
where can I find a boobs like boobies, like
Jessie's boobs,
I wish that I had Jessie's boobs,
I want,
I want Jessie's boobs

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

the original hip hop was about dancing and partying.
so was the original jazz, rock, reggae, techno, etc.
Most of these forms then developed into something that made a more meaningful statement. Jazz got Parker. Rock got Dylan. Reggae got Bob Marley. Rap got 'The Message'. Then they devolved into trite shallowness.

I'd compare the state of hip hop right now to rock in late 70s (Boston, Foreigner, etc)

I don't just listen to hip hop circa 93...there's a lot of good stuff out now. Madlib is incredible, have only heard maybe one weak beat from him. Like some of the DefJux stuff. Mos and Talib are dope. Roots are good, Common. Edan. Self Scientific. Binary Star. All of these people take the template put down by Kool Herc et al and expand on it

from chic thread:

It isn't about the lyrics, it is more about the sonics of the record. I am going through their catalogue and it just seems so joyless and dry for the most part(except the singles). It is boring and restrained(elegant...), I just wish they would cut loose and really make their records sound like a party. I don't have the most extensive disco collection, but I have so much other stuff that just shits all over these records. Everything is really clean and well recorded, the playing is tight, the mixes are really tasteful...it is the sonic equivalent of living in the burbs. It's order and professionalism feels claustrophobic.

bell_labs, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

I do most of my beer choosing using a secret and intricate price divided by alcohol content formula. Ties are broken by the "tastes less shitty" rule.

xpost yes, there is a coffee flavored beer. I don't remember the name, but I've had it, and I hated it.

John Justen, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

Bridget Jones' Diary was really good, and certainly a fuck of a lot better than anything by Mike Leigh. Also better than all the recent British films I've seen, like Sexy Beast and Guy Ritchie's bullshit. Notting Hill looked alright though, I wouldn't mind seeing that.

Sean Penn's my favorite director - more dire, humorless, and sludgy than most arthouse filmmakers, but as easy to digest as lemon meringue pie (where Penn's films' unrelenting grief = the way that meringue tastes mercilessly sweeter than anything in the world). His movies are like if Pepsi made spritzers.

Like Fox's Emmy-winning Arrested Development, which everyone just loved (yet few people managed to watch on a regular basis), 30 Rock is too over the top and full of empty calories to ever attract a mass audience. Sitting through an episode of 30 Rock is like eating at Michael's: You do it in order to fit in, but the experience leaves you craving more. When the episode is over, you probably still hunger for a sitcom like Everybody Loves Raymond or Seinfeld because it is simply more satisfying and familiar. Sometimes a good ol' hamburger with all the fixins' is better than some miniscule piece of beef.

But what you did get from the Rakim/KRS-One insurgence was a sensational game of "top this," which at its best gives us Wu-Tang, OutKast and Biggie (I'm beginning to think "Ready to Die" is the best hip-hop album ever) and at its worst gives us still-interesting folks like Mystikal and Bone Thugs N Harmony. So without Rakim, you don't get the best hip-hop in the canon.
