Who will emerge from round 1? Will Rex Grossman get out of Soldier Field alive if he fucks up against whichever low-seeded team plays the Bears? Will Larry Johnson pause to rape each Colts defensive player on his way to the end zone while scoring his 7 TDs?

spectre (gear), Thursday, 4 January 2007 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

hello!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 4 January 2007 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

Given that Herm's been cornholing LJ all year, I don't know if he'll be able to muster more than a drive-by shocker.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 January 2007 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

REX GROSSMAN SHOULD BE SOLD TO WOLFES FOR FOOD. FUCK HIM AND HIS EYEBROWS.

PS STILL NOT TOM ;_;

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Thursday, 4 January 2007 05:46 (nineteen years ago)

he's the martin gramatica of qbs ; (

spectre (gear), Thursday, 4 January 2007 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

He's not a Grossman, he's a gross, MAN

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 January 2007 06:16 (nineteen years ago)

January 1, 2007 -- NOT only did Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo never date buxom blonde Jessica Simpson - they never even met. Sources say rumors of Romo and Simpson's fling were the work of Jessica's manager daddy, Joe Simpson, who "lent her name out to Romo in exchange for game tickets." But Jessica's publicist, Cindi Berger, said talk of Joe selling out his daughter is "totally false" and that Romo, who's reportedly dating Carrie Underwood , simply mentioned once that he wanted to meet Jessica. A rep for the Cowboys did not return calls.

spectre (gear), Thursday, 4 January 2007 06:22 (nineteen years ago)

As I said in September, Bolts v. Bears.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 January 2007 07:20 (nineteen years ago)

i dont see how the bears could make it to the superbowl.

my picks this weekend:
philly
seattle
indy (they wont lose at home, sorry)
new england

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Thursday, 4 January 2007 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

indy is going to lose at home.
the jets will not beat the pats. if the pats lose it will be due to them shooting themselves in the nuts.
seattle/dallas could be the first game ever where both teams find a way to lose.
the giants should steamroll the iggles, but then again there's the coughlin factor where i think the gints would roll over and play dead against the william & mary jv's if the players thought it would get the coach out of their hair next year.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 4 January 2007 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

^^^^^^^^^ all of this is OTM except for the Indy thing, that game is a toss up depending almost entirely if Regular Season Peyton or Playoffs Peyton shows up.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 January 2007 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I am really looking forward to the pats shooting themselves in the nuts now

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Thursday, 4 January 2007 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

yes, pats please shoot selves in nuts!

so none of you guys think the Saints are going to the SB?

horseshoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

It's possible, more possible, I think, than the Bears doing it.

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, I think so, too. Chicago had a really soft regular season schedule. and I really want the Saints in the Super Bowl because then it will be 50% more likely to be fun to watch. also my weird, embarrassing Sean Payton fixation.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

i think the jets will not only leave the field defeated but also demoralized. i don't think the bears really have a chance. i see them losing to the giants at solider field.

i can remember before i moved to chicago changing from the orange line to the green line at roosevelt after flying in to midway and being legitimately impressed by the sight of solider field lit up at night. now it looks like someone took a giant dump on it.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Soldier Field is surreally ridiculous-looking.

I think my whole trying to be a Bears fan thing would have taken better if it weren't for Grossman.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

I think the Saints will go Super bowling. They might get freaked out by their success once they get there and muff the game, but I think they'll get there. In the meantime, I'm picking all home teams this weekend.

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

eagles over bears

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't even be able to watch that game on the basis of how ugly those two QBs are. I'd have to boycott.

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I think my whole trying to be a Bears fan thing would have taken better if it weren't for Grossman.

uhmmmmmm..... last year's kyle orton experience almost turned me off pro football. i'll never be a bears fan but i suppose i'll root for them as long as they aren't playing the pats.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

After rooting for Boise State I need a team with decent uni's to cheer for and I choose the chets.

Dallas vs Seattle is the game to avoid watching at all costs.

lk (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

so none of you guys think the Saints are going to the SB?

I think they could, but if they do I wouldn't have been right in September, so.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't mind seeing Jeff Garcia win the stupor bowl coz then he could be like lol TO and Brownes etc.

after lookin @ seattle's injury list (starting linebacker, cornerbacks, guards and wide receivers all out) i have to give the edge to dallas :'(

i have A FEELING ABOUT INDY dudes. also i know we r bagging on the nfc a lot, but the fact that KC and the nu york jets are in the playoffs speaks ill of the AFC imo!!!!!!!!! chicago's fucked not b/c of grossman (ok it's because of grossman) but because of all the injured dudes on defense.

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 4 January 2007 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

i think the bears should bring back kordell stewart for the playoffs

spectre (gear), Thursday, 4 January 2007 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Seattle will basically consist of only Hasselbeck and Alexander for the game, but Tony Romo has been finding a lot of new and unusual ways to fumble recently so who knows.

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Thursday, 4 January 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

tony romo is thinking about underwood tittays too much. he's getting so annoying i sort of hope the dude turns into mike tomczak

spectre (gear), Thursday, 4 January 2007 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

oh and rodney harrison out for postseason = lmbo @ pats. i wonder if he's actually a liability at this point due to being a marked man. i sort of wish belichick nothing but ill rn.

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 4 January 2007 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Romo is a douche, he seems "dumber than a bag of hammers" if you ask me. His eyes are dull little cow eyes, he was all psyched off the bench but now you see the true ProBowler that is Tony Romo, jackass who was a benchwarmer for a reason.

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

tony romo is just jake plummer with a bigger smirk and famous girlfriends.

spectre (gear), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

I would rather have Seneca Wallace or Damon Huard or Billy Volek at quarterback than Romo.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

Tony Romo as Jake Plummer OTM. The Billy Volek and Damon Huard thing is a step too far though.

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

the plummer thing is the same too because it was all about this head coach saying, 'screw what we got, i can turn this turd into a diamond! just you watch!'

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Thursday, 4 January 2007 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

the plummer thing is the same too because it was all about this head coach saying, 'screw what we got, i can turn this turd into a diamond! just you watch!'

But that turd was a high first round pick. I mean, he may or may not be a turd. I agree with the basic premise that Plummer is unlikely to get to or win a super bowl.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 January 2007 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

The Billy Volek and Damon Huard thing is a step too far though.

Yeah probably but I'm tired looking at Romo's smug mug.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 January 2007 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

are you sean payton?
No, he was shopping with his wife and he looked like a typical husband, all shruggy like he didn't feel like being there. I was hoping he'd have her "go long" and he'd throw her a head of lettuce or something.

pj (Henry), Thursday, 4 January 2007 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

what i hate the most about romo is when he completes a pass and instead of just getting downfield and moving on or even doing something 'aw he's a big kid!' like favre pumping his fist, he smirks and giggles and high fives everybody. totally punchable.

Trent Green is like the polar opposite of Tom Brady, I figured out. You always feel sorry for Trent Green. Trent Green could win the Super Bowl and there would be some reason to still feel sorry for that dude. OTOH, I genuinely look forward to Brady having the shit sacked out of him tomorrow, a lot.

I kind of hope Deion keeps talking shit about the Colts' D having their makeup come off or whatever, that seems to have unleashed a fucking fury apparently. Well and Bob Sanders coming back.

Cris Collinsworth was given further reason to be AMAZED. "

I think Collinsworth was even more amazed by the deep love between Tony Dungy and Herman Edwards.

Romentum has swung the other way. Hype can be a bitch. Romo will get the most crap, but there was plenty of screw ups with Dallas that didn't help.

The Colts offensive gameplan over the Chiefs was quite a bit like the Eagles game. They just got a lead and then ran the ball mixing in with some short passing. They had a 14 play TD drive in that Eagles game where they did not even throw a pass.

I think, that despite the hype, it sez a ot for the romo/favre comparison, characterwise, that this dude trying so hard to bootleg for a first down or a TD after fucking up the snap and then FUMBLE OMG WTF BBQ CRYING ON THE FIELD I WANT TO DIE made it almost sad that the cowboys had to lose. I mean like I give a shit, one or the other NFC east teams is moving on after tomorrow and I personally think Coughlin blows all the balls so whatevs but damn dude you play pretty hard and you evidently have that "intangible" that makes it possible to believe in a team on the road in seattle during the playoffs in 2006, and yeah, anyway, for a few seconds there, maybe even a minute, I felt bad for a Cowboy, I wanted a motherfucking Cowboy to get one more chance.

Did anyone else catch the pregame discussion that basically amounted to "Tom Brady is a bitchy little girl who holds grudges like the way most people hold their children"?? That was hilarious! They were like phrasing it all in this faux-positive "And that's why Brady is a great QB" way but they really needed to point out that he is completely batshit insane and thinks every team that beat him this year "stole" his "codes" and that he's still pissed about the Pro Bowl snub?

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Monday, 8 January 2007 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

that was hilarious, i mean i guess that he actually just wanted to punch a camera man and in no way actually wanted to hug mangina, but that was a good excuse to use to punch a camera man. because those dudes don't even speak to each other. or maybe he was trying to rub his stench on mangina?

OK this doesn't really belong on this thread but LOL @ stupid ESPN douchehole calling some college player "the physical equivalent of Daunte Culpepper, even though he's only 20!" It's like, uh, hasn't Daunte Culpepper basically been a crippled elderly man for 3 years straight now? WTF does it even mean?

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Monday, 8 January 2007 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

lol they mustve been talking about jamarcus russell. he has crazy physical gifts but is also certifiably insane, whoever drafts him is gonna have a handful.

i remember a year or two ago at the pro bowl they asked a bunch of players to create a frankenstein quarterback made of various QB parts, and they came up with... the legs of mike vick, the arm of donovan mcnabb, the BRANE of peyton manning, the body of culpep and... the heart of tom brady.

I found out about twenty seconds after hitting submit that they were, indeed, talking about Russell.

The thing about the frankenstein qb is the weirdest thing I've heard in a while and anyway everyone knows you want the heart of DOUG FLUTIE.

1. LDT, rivers, merriman found in flagrante delicto with a naked cub scout troop.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

2. Schottenheimer to coach Chargers.

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

i am such a dingus that i think i almost actually talked myself into believing the pats had a chance based solely on the shottenheimer effect.

pats run defense is going to be exposed for what it is, a bunch of slow aarp candidates who can hit pretty well if you run into their scheme but are woefully unprepared to chase anyone down from sideline to sideline.

i look for the pats to go back to the spread offense again this week and run 4 or 5 wide the whole time.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh god Brady is going to be such a bitch next week at the press conference, holy crap.

if the matchups were the other way around, NE-BALLLLLLIN and IND-SD, i would give NE & IND good chances to win. but as it is i think the home teamz got the advantage. the run defense is fine so long as wilfork and warren are playing.

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

ne's biggest problem is san diego's passrush, TROM BADY isnt getting very consistent protection.

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/sports/photos/2006/06/12/roethlisberger-ben-cp-060612.jpg

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

when the game is over and the analysts are trying to see why the pats lost i think it will come down to them not being able to slow down LDT. rookie qb in playoffs vs. belicheck designed d = no cause for alarm. pats spreading out the sd defense and throwing 3 yard hook plays all game will negate the chargers rush. pats throwing some of bronko nagurski's old team mates out there to try to slow down tomlinson will be painful for me to watch.

i predict LDT runs for 184 yards.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Ben is only tragedy this year, no roffles :(

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

actually if you wanna talk about brady being bitchcakes, remember when schottenheimer dared to suggest last year that the pats' run was coming to an end? brady was consumed with the fury of bees over that shit. and hearing bruschi, warren etc talk up the chargers as the best team in the league i think they're gonna go in there HONGRY. and Hongro. so i think i like the pats' chances. vrabel's elderly, but the defense shouldn't be the problem imo.

Brady should really have a word with Belichick about his sidelines attire. Dude has gone from frumpy old guy to "homeless Bill" in the course of one season.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 8 January 2007 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

I heard Tom Brady got beat up in a gay bar.

But seriously folks! Why did the Jets blitz on every play? It was simply not working.

lk (lawrence kansas), Monday, 8 January 2007 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

"Here, coach, I bought you some Kiehl's, I thought you might like it..." *cue Belichick opening bottle of aftershave, drinking it*

xpost because they're the fucking Jets.

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Monday, 8 January 2007 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Better question: why the hell did the Jets try that dopey lateral bullshit pass 15 times yesterday, despite the Patriots' continually sniffing it out? Hint to Mangina: if they tip the ball & almost intercept / pick up a fumble the first two times, maybe the third time AIN'T the charm.

Reason for Jets' continually blitzing: their front 4 couldn't get any pressure on Herr Brady, so they were, um, trying to? I think the blitzing might've reduced Brady's time in the pocket enough so that he could only take two sips of champagne before throwing the ball / an o-lineman got bored & let Shaun Ellis have a go.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 8 January 2007 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

Mangini read that the sporting press expected him to be "cerebral" and play a completely different game than he did when he beat them @ home, so he decided to REVERSERIZE and play almost the exact same game, which the pats are able to recite in their sleep now.

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Monday, 8 January 2007 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

my biggest beef with brady is that his mouth looks like an asshole. also his creepy voice which is always cracking. like an asshole.

I loved Aikman's reaction to the tackle too, he like kind of stopped mid-sentence and then just tried to move on, professionally, and Buck was like, "Hey, what do you call that kind of a tackle?" and Aikman tried not to bayonette Buck in the nuts and just kind of grimaced out, "I have no idea what that was about." Cue infuriating Buck snicker.

To understand this six-time Pro Bowl safety, just take a look on the top shelf of his locker. There you will find multiple figurines of his favorite comic book hero, Wolverine, some of which have been provided by his fans. Wolverine is the low-key leader of the X-Men, a comic book action series, an animated cartoon and a main character in three full-length feature films. Wolverine is known for his animal-keen senses that allow him to track his adversaries with great ease, very much like Brian Dawkins hunts down opposing ball carriers and receivers.

From The VV, via Forks, for lolls:

"Barber's decision to retire at the peak of his game caused quite a stir, but I can't blame the guy for wanting to get out while he can still walk and see straight. Nearly every week various players are carted off the field with a cornucopia of injuries and head traumas; there is an X-ray room in Giants Stadium, right near the players' locker room, presumably because it would be a shame to waste a trip to the hospital if parts of your body were merely ripped, strained, or torn rather than actually broken."

lk (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

I keep reading "strained" as "stained" and I'm like, that really would be a waste though.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

not if the stain was from repainting the Ravens helmets

lk (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

among other things wrong with that quote, it seems in poor taste to be super-snarky about people's bodies being ripped, strained or torn.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

It is kind of mind-blowing, like the players WOULDN'T go to the hospital if something was wrong. I mean, are they purposefully misunderstanding the fact that the X-Ray machine is there to check and see if something is broken on a player who thinks it IS "just" a sprain? Or are they just that much of a choad?

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

i think the point is that the teams don't care enough about the players to take them to the hospital unless they are actually broken, not just a little bit hurt. but then that doesn't explain why the team would spend the money on an x-ray machine, the requisite renovation to the facility to safely operate one, the cost to operate, etc. that would seem to indicate that the teams do in fact care about the players well being. or maybe they just don't want to pay tolls on the jersey turnpike. i guess what i'm trying to say is that i really don't know what the fucking point is.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah that is basically the point I was trying to make, the facilities are all there not to keep players from going to the hospital but to help diagnose and treat potentially serious injuries? It's like WTF, yes, that is why the on-site ER is there, so they can tell them it is all in their heads and to go back out there and throw the pigskin or whatever the hell. SO WEIRD. PLZ TO HAVE ACTUAL SPORTS FANS START WRITING BOUT THESE THINGS AGAIN :(

A Crashing Bore: What's so fun about 22 guys in spandex slamming into one another? Along for the ride with Jets and Giants fans
by Emma Span Village Voice - January 9th, 2007

I know that football involves complex, intriguing strategy, out-thinking your opponent in addition to out–pounding the shit out of him. There's a method behind the madness of the mess of collisions, handoffs, passes, tackles, and tangled limbs. I've watched the SportsCenter guys explain this my entire life; I've heard my friends argue about it; I've read books about it.

The problem is that when I actually watch a game, I can't see it. What I see is 22 guys in spandex, many of them larger than my mom's Corolla, crashing into each other as forcefully as possible, pausing for three minutes of beer ads, and repeating. The only exceptions to this are the games I attended in college, when I saw 44 guys crashing into each other.

Football fans are shaking their heads right now and dismissing me as an idiot, and you know what? That's fair. I have the same reaction when people tell me they just find baseball "too slow." The National Football League made roughly $6 billion last year, so it's safe to assume it's doing something right; if I'd grown up watching the game, I don't doubt I'd be counting down the minutes to Monday night, obsessing over my fantasy team, and making terrorist threats to Cablevision for refusing to carry the new NFL Network—but I didn't.

Having tried to get into the sport for years without much success, I haven't been able to make that crucial New York football commitment: Jets or Giants? As both teams played their final home games before slipping into the playoffs, it seemed like the perfect time to give America's de facto national pastime another chance.

To be fair, the Giants' Christmas Eve Holiday Spectacular was not exactly a showcase of the sport's finest qualities. After weeks of squabbling and mini-scandals—Michael Strahan bawling out an ESPN reporter with a mouth full of sandwich, Tiki Barber's early and often discussed retirement, Barber and Jeremy Shockey criticizing head coach Tom Coughlin, everyone else on the East Coast criticizing quarterback Eli Manning—they lost for the sixth time in their last seven games, to the New Orleans Saints, in what could be kindly termed an utter collapse.

There are elements of football that I enjoy, and Reggie Bush illustrated the main one beautifully, though unfortunately he did so for the visiting team. Dodging leviathans, he broke out of the game's torpid, yard-by-yard pace and into invigorating unimpeded runs without crushing anyone or being crushed (thanks, admittedly, to the crushing being done by his teammates). This is, of course, a major part of football, but every time it happens, it feels to me like cheating, though for a good cause—Odysseus outwitting the cyclops. Leon Washington has provided flashes of it for the Jets this season, and when Tiki Barber is on—as he wasn't in the Saints game but emphatically was the following week versus the Redskins—this is exactly what he excels at.

Barber's decision to retire at the peak of his game caused quite a stir, but I can't blame the guy for wanting to get out while he can still walk and see straight. Nearly every week various players are carted off the field with a cornucopia of injuries and head traumas; there is an X-ray room in Giants Stadium, right near the players' locker room, presumably because it would be a shame to waste a trip to the hospital if parts of your body were merely ripped, strained, or torn rather than actually broken.

There are more than 50 players on the Giants' roster, and as you'd expect, it's a diverse bunch. The Friday before Christmas, with the locker room floor strewn with wrapping paper (in addition to the usual jockstraps, towels, and pads), Michael Strahan loudly mocked R.W. McQuarters's briefs ("Calvin Klein ain't no friend of mine!") on the way to the shower, while in the another corner kicker Jay Feely engaged a teammate in animated, erudite philosophical debate about the nature of our "results-driven so ciety."

The team's locker room is peppered with inspirational quotes. "My ego was centered around my teams [sic] success, not my accomplishments— Bill Russell," reads one large sign. (I bet that missing apostrophe has slowly been driving Jay Feely insane for the last two years.) Another declares, "We are what we repeatedly do—excellence is not an act, but a habit." The same could be said of fumbles or interceptions, but never mind.

These sentiments were not much in evidence after the debacle against the Saints (30-7), when players used various combinations of the words "disappointing," "embarrassing," and "humiliating" in their post-game interviews. Tom Coughlin, who looks as if he's in dire need of some Pepcid and a deep-tissue massage even on his best days, said he felt "frustration and some despair" and went on to actually apologize for ruining Christmas.

Few places are quieter than a football locker room after a loss. When Terrell Owens criticized the Cowboys' game plan after a defeat a few weeks ago, analysts—particularly former players, like ESPN's Mark Schlereth—were beside themselves, not so much because he had cast aspersions on his coaches and quarterback but because he had done so while wearing a Santa hat. The slightest sign of levity is on par with wearing a low-cut red dress to a funeral.

Of course all professional athletes are upset after a big loss, and as fans we expect nothing less. It never occurred to me to tell the Mets, after the heartbreaking Game 7 loss to the Cardinals this fall, "Hey, buck up, guys. It's only a game." (It didn't occur to me to tell the Giants that either, but only because many of them were over 300 pounds and irate.) It's "only a game" only when it's not your game.

The Giants Stadium press box, meanwhile, is no place to watch a sporting event. A glass wall protects against the weather but also muffles most of the crowd noise, giving the space an incongruous library-like quietness. Located on the ninth level, it's high enough to make Chris Snee look antlike and requires reporters to either bring high-powered binoculars, follow along on a nearby TV, or as in my case, squint at the knot of players on the field and wonder what the fuck is happening. You can, at least, get a decent view of Fox's automated camera, which swoops over the field on a high-tech track and looks like a hostile alien robot; I kept expecting it to start firing lasers. By the fourth quarter of the Giants-Saints game, this would have been a welcome distraction.

The NFL is, deliberately and very successfully, tailored for television, and as far as I can tell, tailgating is the only real reason to show up in person. You can say what you want about the Meadowlands—that it's a gridlocked eyesore in the middle of a desolate, radioactive swamp, for example—and about the denizens of New Jersey, my native state. But the crowd in East Rutherford knows damn well what to do with a parking lot. We take to wide expanses of asphalt like fish to water.

Any warm and fuzzy feelings of state pride generated by the impressive spectacle of Lot 16 pre-partying, however, had dissipated by the time I finished walking up the Gate B spiral at halftime on the New Year's Eve Jets game. This is the sort of crowd that's fun to drink with but no longer enjoyable once drunk. Flocks of jersey-wearing guys gathered around the middle of the spiral, threw beer bottles, cursed Raiders fans, and chanted, "Show us your tits!" at a flattered but shy Jersey girl a few levels up. (Eventually, the lower-tier crowd segued into a rousing cry of "T-I-T-S! Tits! Tits! Tits!" which, OK guys, points for creativity. But you're still shitheads.)

I've always thought I should try to be a Jets fan; they're underdogs enough that they might offset my Yankees fandom and, in combination with the Nets, help me get into heaven. But they've given me precious little to hang on to over the last few years; it's not so much that they haven't been good, but rather that they've been assiduously dull.

I honestly think I'd love rookie head coach Eric "Man-Genius" Mangini if only I weren't trying to report on him; the pleasant, baby-faced 35-year-old has made politely stonewalling sportswriters into an art form. Well, no—stonewalling sportswriters was already an art form, but in Mangini, it has found its Picasso. It's now entering its blue period. The erstwhile Bill Belichick protégé refuses to speak in soundbites or pithy quotes, which is refreshing in theory but, in practice, profoundly dull (do not ingest a Mangini press conference while driving or operating heavy machinery). He has a wry, Saharan sense of humor, which he rarely allows himself to display; after the Jets' win over the Oakland Raiders gave them a wild-card slot, safety Kerry Rhodes said, "He was happy. He may have smiled twice."

In Chad Pennington (a "Rhodes Scholarship finalist," as broadcasters never tire of reminding us), the Jets have a solid, hardworking quarterback who's also smart enough not to feed the media machine. He has an impressive bearing, though. It's easy to imagine Pennington doing something else—owning his own business, maybe, or running for local office—whereas it's very difficult to imagine the much maligned Eli Manning doing anything other than playing beer pong off of a football field.

With the team coming off a lousy, injury- riddled 4-12 season, and with Chad Pennington rehabbing a shoulder injury, no one expected much from the Jets this season, and they have a bit of a chip on their collective shoulder. "A lot of people outside, they're not with us every day. . . . We know from inside what kind of players we have," said Rhodes, before the Raiders game, in a typical statement. Asked afterward if they'd used the doubters as motivation, he said no: "Of course you're going to hear it, but . . . we didn't care what nobody else thought—we still don't care. We have to play for ourselves."

Wide receiver Laveranues Coles took Mangini's dictum that injuries must not be used as excuses—although I have no idea how a fucking concussion isn't a legitimate excuse—to extremes after the Raiders win. Asked about the brutal hit he'd received in the previous week's Dolphins game, he snapped, "Ask me about the playoffs." The reporter took umbrage and turned away, muttering, "Great, now you're telling me what questions to ask."

"What?!"

"Don't tell me what to ask. Fuck you."

"Fuck you! . . . Yeah, boy, you better get far."

"What are you gonna do, huh?"

At which point the Jets' alert PR staff swooped in and gently hustled the reporter away before he could find out.

"Sorry you had to see that," said Coles, who, incidentally, was wearing a sequined Pink Panther T-shirt throughout the exchange. I debated, but ultimately decided against, asking him to show me his tits.

I watched the playoffs the way the NFL is meant to be watched: on TV, with beer. The length alone made the back-to-back games feel like a real event—seven hours of football (or rather, about three hours of football and roughly four hours of that excruciating Chevy ad featuring John Mellencamp's "Our Country").

On the screen, I could pick up details I'd have missed at the stadium—just how much Eagles QB Jeff Garcia resembles my 45-year-old 11th-grade earth science teacher, for example (you have no idea until he takes off his helmet). Also, reading Jeremy Shockey's lips after a failed play is fun, educational, and perfect for drinking games. The trade-off is enduring Fox's epileptic-fit-inducing on-field graphics, shameless plugs for 24, and random animated-robot prancing on the side of my screen. Whoever directs Fox's sports coverage is suffering from some combination of attention deficit disorder, megalomania, or a severe sugar high.

Jets fans are not optimistic people, and while they were disappointed with their team's 37-16 loss to the Patriots, very few of them seemed surprised. Instead, they were relieved and grateful that the season hadn't been a putrid disaster, as expected. The Pats' Tom Brady, object of passionate yet manly adoration from sportscasters everywhere, ran another excellent game, precisely orchestrated by Belichick. Afterward, the flinty New England coach hurled cameramen out of his way in order to briefly encircle Mangini with his forearms, a perplexing and unfamiliar gesture that bore a superficial resemblance to a hug.

Shortly thereafter, the Giants played a respectable but futile game against the Philadelphia Eagles, who beat them 23-20 in the final seconds.

Eli Manning was unimpressive but, to everyone's visible relief, kept the game from spiraling out of control. The loss left Tom Coughlin's future with the team in doubt, but since he looks to be one more interception away from a massive mental and physical breakdown, perhaps a forced vacation would be for the best. Meanwhile, Tiki Barber survived one last series of crushing blows and, with thoughts of lucrative television contracts dancing in his head, was unable to suppress a smile after the loss. "It's a game," he said afterward, "and now it's done. I'm excited about life."

I'm excited about pitchers and catchers.

IT'S LIKE THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY DR. MORBIUS. I HATE THE VILLAGE VOICE, THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I REFUSED THEIR OFFER OF EASY WORK THAT THEY HOUNDED ME ABOUT FOR 2 YEARS.

THO OTM ABOUT ELI MANNING AND THE BEER PONG, DUDE NEEDS TO STOP SPENDING 2ND HALF OF SEASON DOING THAT SHIT. I KNOW NO ONE ON THE GIANTS CARES ANYMORE BUT COME ON, YOU'RE OFFICIALLY HEADING INTO YOUR "LATE 20S," GROW UP.

Despite my earnest wishes, Marty never said, "I'm just going to take this one Blizzard at a time. book manning for three interceptions next week

How many should I book Brady for? Because he also fucking sucks, but he's #1 sporting press BJ recipient for the 6th year in a row. I mean sure LT got MVP but we all REALLY know the star of all football is ever-so-cool-in-the-pocket Tom Brady, three rings and oops a pick right into the arms of another charger. don't mention that, or that belichick's vaunted ability to knock out number one seeds is pretty much based entirely on games decided by last minute field goals, let's spend another thirty minutes talking up the fucking unstoppable unbelievable pats who, uh, can't actually beat the Colts anymore guys, that was two years ago. People hate the Pats because they are the most overhyped team in the history of the league. We are tired of hearing about yr dynasty of kickers. Brady is not actually the perfect QB. People want to see the pats lose because it means we get to stop hearing about them. Shilling for everything ever vs. being shilled for by every football commentator ever. "Montana-like!" Uh.

Anyway. I really hope XLI does not blow as hard as these playoffs have.

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

Brady isn't exactly someone who throws picks with great regularity. He had a bad game yesterday, but before that he had many games in a row with no picks whatsoever.

I guess I will root for New Orleans now so that we can magically fix their broken city.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

i would basically be happy with any super bowl combination that does not include the pats. i mean obv they're a great team, though; they downed teams led by kurt warner, jake delhomme, and a nauseous donovan mcnabb.

‘•’u (gear), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

Brady threw 4 picks the last time the Pats met the Colts, in the regular season. who does NE even have besides Brady? Rodney Harrison's still out, right? they don't have Ty Law. who's going to pick Peyton off?

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

what's the rule on replays, btw? i thought schottenheimer should have challenged on that one fumble that the receiver never had possession, not that the ground caused the fumble. can a coach challenge on one point and can the refs then check it out and see they were wrong on another point and overturn it for a reason other than the challenge?

‘•’u (gear), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

also, way upthread, lawrence kanasas OTM:

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

weird moment in the bears game yesterday, on that grossman pass in the first quarter that was nearly picked off.

aikman: what a great pass by rex grossman

(10 seconds later)

aikman: the bears are really lucky that grossman pass wasn't picked off.

‘•’u (gear), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

hmm. pats not unstoppable! but, the other teams esp top seeds seem to be usually fucking up enough to lose the game. and it's like if the pats inc. brady fuck up, which they do, the other team fucks up more esp. under pressure in the last few minutes of the half/game, so why get pissed at the pats.

i don't know what to expect next week out, but uh, they lost to the jets last time they met in the regular season, they lost to the chargers (disastrously) last year in regular season.. and?

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

well brady had a bad game, but manning is almost always bad in the playoffs. which is something i usually don't put too much stock in, but the pattern is pretty hard to ignore at this point. indy's season always ends w/him shitting the bed. which is not to say he couldn't have a great game next week. i just doubt he will.

as for the press love of brady, they like winning, they like to say he just wins. what're you gonna do? they're retarded glory hounds. brady has come up big in some big games and he's dug his way out of a hole of his own making a few times and he's a few handed to him (like yesterday). and he's kinda a lame dude.

but anyone who hates brady more than manning is bonkerz - at least he doesn't throw his teammates under the bus when he fucks up.

and, uh, belichick is obv v good at his job.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think anyone is pissed at the Pats for winning; people are pissed at the Pats for being completely ungracious winners year in and year out and even poorer losers, and for the fact that they get a complete pass by the entirety of the press despite this. It tends to lead people who aren't already fans of the team to really hate the team in question. LT basically OTM in calling them out esp. Belichick except he did come off like a crybaby ;_;

Colts-Nawlins FYI.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Also TS calling out a crappy kicker who started the fight vs pissing and moaning that the other team "stole" your signals because they, like, watched your previous games? I mean, c'mon, they're both huge girly assholes. Peyton is just generally a more "likeable" character than Patrick Bateman Brady.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

people don't dispute that Belichick is a smart coach, they find him basically unrelatable as a human being because his a giant asshole and not in a charming way like Bill Parcells.

LT was basically OTM, but Deion Sanders was weirdly OTM also when he commented that Tomlinson shouldn't have called himself "classy" in comparison with the Patriots. even if everyone knows it's true.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

actually the "basically relatable as a human being" thing is also why I prefer Manning to Brady.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

who's going to pick Peyton off?

asante samuel led the league in interceptions. the pats d is really good - the o not so much, their receiving core is a joke (and the main reason for brady's subpar season).

what's the rule on replays, btw?

it doesn't matter what you challenge, they review the whole play.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

OTM about Manning always being pretty bad in the playoffs, except he and Brady had same comnplete % and same # of intercepts yesterday and it's just hilarious that the game recaps are the 3 Manning ints over and over and like no mention of the Brady ones. I guess it is kind of funnier to show how Bmore kept sonning Manning yet did absolutely jack all with it :D

xpost haha yeah I don't know why he pointed out that he was classy. WEIRD.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

I think he was still kind of disbelieving that his team managed to lose given the game he had. people probably shouldn't be held superaccountable for the things they say the day they lose a playoff game. I do feel really bad for him...it would have been awesome watching him run in the Super Bowl.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

also, sorry to keep harping on how much I hate Brady (seriously, I wish I could get over it), but I don't think this: as for the press love of brady, they like winning, they like to say he just wins. entirely accounts for why male sportscasters seem obsessed with Brady. he's like this screen on which they project really kind of gross insecurity/hero-worship and that's not really his fault, but it always, alway makes me want to puke.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

yeah the tombradydoesitagianisms were particularly ridiculous yesterday - he had an awful game, including that crazy interception/fumble play on one of his BIG FOURTH QUARTER DRIVES. he was so off i was starting to wonder if he's injured or something.

also i vaguely remember more manning blaming his teammates instances than just the vanderjeck thing.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

even in the huddle he seems to be scolding them sometimes ala marino. also his reactions to dropped passes, miscommunications =/ the positive body language of a GREAT LEADER LIKE TOM BRADY.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

on a happier note, I love the Jim Mora "PLAYOFFS?!?!" Coors Light commercial more every time I see it.

xpost re Manning: I don't think he's scolding them, just calling plays. also his reactions to mistakes are scary, but I read that as part of his whole during-the-game perfectionist personality. and I seriously wish he'd lighten up on the field; I think he'd probably be unbeatable if he did. but I maintain that off the field he seems nice and normal. of course, I am the biggest cap'n-save-a-Manning ever.

LT is all right but why they let merriman do that stupid dance all season long anyway? what's the class in that? it's bad form, funny to watch as a fan but has an air of.. lack of discipline + overconfidence

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

i sound like such a tool, but.. "he just wins" is about it, i mean, it's not luck, it's not magic, to keep winning championships at that level. he didn't have a great game sunday but also it didn't seem like they rattled him quite enough to shut down the passing game, and it sure seemed like marty s. was the one making the real killer bad decisions

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

I don't get why the talking heads are making so much of Marty taking that time out yesterday. In the scope of things, that might be #10 in the list of why the Chargers lost to the Pats. Ironically, if they would have played Martyball and just tried to pound the rock instead of trying to pass as much, they probably would have won. SD had killed the Pats on the ground with both LT and Turner. I think Schottenheimer's biggest msistake was on thenext to last drive getting 6 yards on the first play running with LT and then passing the next two downs with like four minutes left on the clock. That was a way bigger mistake than throwing the flag, but neither are as stupid as the penalty on the extra point right before halftime, the two dumb fumbles, Rivers taking that sack 15 yards back costing them a field goal try and Jammer letting Gaffney get away for another twenty yards after the catch on NE's last drive. Marty throwing that flag is pretty insignifigant by comparison. SD should have just tried to run the ball much more and I think they counted on Rivers a bit too much.

Bob Kraft must have a freakin' mojo hand or is sacrificing virgins under Gillette stadium, as the Pats have had more flukey luck in the playoffs in the past half dozen years than any team in the history of the game.

The game kind of reminded me a bit of Pittsburgh's loss to the NE in the AFC Championship game a few years ago, where the Steelers played better but did stupid stuff and let the game slip away to the Pats late.

As I thought might be the case, the Colts getting back Dallas Clark has been really big. That catch for the first down at the end of the game was excellent.

I don't think Peyton Manning has gone that overboard trying to blame everyone else for his failures, in fact I think Manning has taken more than his fair share of abuse since he was in college about not being able to win the big game. The guy has won plenty and you can say pretty much saved the franchise in Indy, but that isn't the interesting story.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

no, you don't sound like a tool, dar1a, but Brady-loving sportscasters frequently do. I dunno, there's such a core of self-loathing, man I wish I could be a pro-athlete babe-scoring uber-man in so many sportscasters that their love for Brady can't help but seem indecent.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

that 2nd & 4 in the fourth stood out as particularly wtf to me too. but all the mental errors the chargers made warrant mentioning too (wasted timeout included) - cause they would've won if they'd been a little more with it (despite the lame play calling).

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

Much as i enjoy watching the Bolts, they were really ineptly coached in that game, so many times that the game was up for grabs and poor playcalling, clock management and challenges botch their chances... i guess I'm just saying OTM Earl Nash again.

cosine on dallas clark being a big up for the colts; I don't really think it's a fait accompli that they lose to the Pats, but i DO think the winner of that game steamrolls either Chi or St Looie.

We were talking last night about how basically appropriate it would be for the Patriots to destroy New Orleans in Florida; it's 2005 all over again.

here is something i don't understand: all year the media's been making a big deal abt how marty handed off the play calling duties to his coordinators oh lookit him now he's not even wearing a headset!!!. then after the game when asked abt the 4th and 11 he's all i was just trying to be aggressive. so was he calling the plays or not wtf???

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

"Also: why is Coughlin still not fired?"

My guess is that the Giants front office thinks they will have better options (maybe Cowher) in a year for the head coach than what is currently available if Coughlin doesn't pan out. There was also something in the players exit interviews that most of them really liked Coughlin and wanted him back for another season.

I'm more of the thinking that it was more dumb luck with injuries that brought the Giants down than coaching. The dumb penalties have been a big problem with the NYG's for years, it is not something new. I don't think that gets fixed until you change out a bunch of players.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

how about a minor theme of the weekend being big name linebackerz disappearing and/or getting manhandled by o-lineman: Urlacher, Merriman and Ray Lewis(had a lot of tackles but no big ones[also, i less think he's overrated than past his prime a bit) collectively.

Brady gets credit for that one deep, PERFECT throw to Caldwell. otherwise, he shouldve had 5 picks prolly.

Jimmy_tango (Jimmy_tango), Monday, 15 January 2007 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

i thought merriman acquitted himself well. they were dropping him into coverage a lot and when they did rush him he was being held like CRAZY. urlacher didn't have his best game but i think his responsibilities have changed with the d-line injuries. ray-ray's well past his prime but what else is gnu~

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Monday, 15 January 2007 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

He is still in charge of situational strategy, but he didn't pick the play. He only chose to go for it. Also, Cameron wanted to go for it too, so it's kinda moot.

Following the Colts' 2006 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Manning drew criticism for post-game statements that seemed to shift the blame to his offensive line. Manning stated that, "I'm trying to be a good teammate here.... let's just say we had some problems with protection." Manning was sacked five times in that game.

Yeah, I've been advocating beating their offensive line with sticks for a while now. Still doesn't really acquit Coughlin, who should go ahead and start fucking benching these dudes when they fuck up.

Also we already had the Manning comments about the protection debate last year, and I went on the record as saying I was kind of on his side there, he was pissed at the reporter and said something (that was true) that he probably would've phrased better had he not been pissed. Whatevs tho--not really making the argument that Manning isn't a bitch, he's an NFL QB for god's sake, just that he is certainly a generally more likeable than Creepy McBrady up in Boston. Even the Cowboys got backlash in the '90s and you cannot be telling me that Aikman wasn't a more charming character than either of these two. It's not helping the Pats in the hates sweepstakes that their QB and Coach are both kind of reminiscent of serial killers.

football fans with capabilities for introspection and self-awareness may seem rare on the whole, but by frequenting establishments that charge more than $2.50 per Bud Light (stadiums excepted obviously) you discover that the most fervent idiots are generally absent, leaving small pockets of geeks who would rather discuss parity issues, Michael Lewis and team owners' historical proclivities vs. saying the same three or four words (or even just letters) out loud over and over.

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

if it wasn't for 3 retarded moves the chargers would've had game in hand: 4th and 11, trying to pick up the muffed punt instead of falling on it, head butt right in front of the ref. there's also all those wasted timeouts in the 2nd half.

who was it who was saying that coaching is overrated in the nfl? a disciplined, well-coached team wouldn't have made these mistakes.

and yes allyzay, i know why the pats are hated but i do not care. as stated before i was there for the 1-15 years, the years where tommy hodson was considered a bright light for the franchise, the victor kiam years, the years where james busch orthwein was threatening to move the team to st. louis every other week. so having been through that crap you would be insane if you think i'm going to give a shit whether anyone likes the franchise or not.

I'm definitely thinking 2001 when Bledsoe came off the bench and threw that late TD. If I remember right and I haven't checked anything out, Pittsburgh was killing them on time of possession running the ball and up by a couple of scores. It was a low scoring game, but I think they were up by at least a TD and FG. It finally looked like Kordell had won a big game, then they muffed a punt return which turned into a NE TD, Brady got shook up and Bledsoe threw a late TD to either tie or win the game. I think Troy Brown or someone else may have taken a punt back for a TD in that game too. Either way, they gave a bunch of points away to the Pats.

2001 was really fluky, as there was also the Raiders snow game and Martz being a fool not running the ball in the second half. I think Brady only threw for like 160 yards and won the SB MVP.

I guess LT only got 8 touches in the second half against NE. Knowing that now, SD was monumentally stupid in their second half planning in that game.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Either way, they gave a bunch of points away to the Pats.

flip side of that coin is that the pats took a bunch of points away from the steelers.

I guess LT only got 8 touches in the second half against NE.

THANK YOU MARTY!!!!

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

really, only 8 touches? the more i think about that the more confounding it seems. after the first run by LDT where he bounced outside for 10 yards i remember thinking "this is going to be a looooong game."

huh. 8 touches. the one dude the pats had absolutely no answer for and he only gets it 8 times in the second half. if any gm tries to hire marty for anything other than rebuilding the season ticket holders should hold an intervention. or a lynching.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

if any owner tries to hire marty for anything other than GM, you mean

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

i think history shows marty is a decent coach until it's win or go home. he'd be a good choice for a team like detroit who probably don't know how to win regular season games and shouldn't even think about playoffs.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the Chargers' gameplan was basically flawless apart from the 4th and 11 in the first quarter. If dudes catch balls and don't be stupid, it's not a close football game.

‘•’u (gear), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

and don't be stupid,

this goes back to coaching. plus i'd say only giving LDT 8 touches in the 2nd half is a pretty big flaw. as were the two pass attempts on after the pats tied the game.

did anyone read tuesday morning quarterback today? i loved the part where the chargers were celebrating on the sideline when they went up by 8 points.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

biggest play was the fumble after the interception. if the dude had knocked it down the chargers would've won the game since it was 4th down and all. but he went for the pick and let troy brown strip him. bad move. knock it down on fourth.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

OTM. You're up by a TD with the 4th quarter winding down. You need to kill the clock. You have the best running back in the NFL. This is as basic as coaching gets.

they ran right at tully banta-cain all day and he couldn't shed the blocks at all. i'm sure the colts will try to exploit him in the same manner next week. i think the pats will probably try to do the same thing the ravens did with keeping the safeties 20 yards off the line in an attempt to eliminate the deep play, the pats db's have always had trouble covering those guys. i'm not so sure the pats interior defense will be able to hold the colts to 15 points however.

this is exactly the type of game where i'll miss willie mcginnest the most. the linebackers are going to be tested all day, they'll have to cover a lot of ground and they'll likely be on the field a lot as i expect the colts to have an advantage in time of possession. it would be nice to have willie come in at a crucial time after getting a few plays rest on the sidelines. other than vrabel none of the lb's have taken that role of a player who steps up and makes big plays at big times.

you are insane if you believe that. plus, i sincerely doubt he'd fail. first run went for five yards and at that point LDT and his back up (i forget his name, tucker?) were averaging five and half yards per carry. the pats couldn't stop the run all day. they didn't stop the run on the first play of that drive. if you want to pass on 3rd down i can almost see it (though not really) but to pass on 2nd and 3rd? lunacy.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

He'd be crucified for not letting the league's MVP carry the ball down the stretch?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

you are insane if you believe that.

Perhaps you don't watch every Charger game like I do and read every article about the Chargers like I do. This is exactly what he did against the Ravens this year, several times last year, and against the Jets in the playoffs. Every time the press destroyed him for not mixing in some passing. "Oh, it's Martyball... three runs and a punt."

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

I mean I completely agree that he should have run the ball more, I am talking purely about press reaction.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

perhaps. but again, it goes back to i don't think the patriots could stop LDT 3 times in a row. but thankfully for pats fans everywhere we'll never know for sure.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

polyphonic otm, tho he still should've ran LT more. i wondered if the crazy going for it on 4th and 11 was him trying to show that this was the NU MARTY.

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

i wondered if the crazy going for it on 4th and 11 was him trying to show that this was the NU MARTY.

I think the fact that Kaeding has a relatively weak leg and was kicking into the wind had something to do with it. All I know is that, in Madden, I go for it every single time in that scenario!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

but in 2004 against the jets didn't he run LDT like right up the gut into the strongest part of the jets d? a jets d that was way more stout than this pats defense? and wasn't it in the rain? i still think it's insane that they didn't go back to that off tackle run that the pats couldn't stop.

i mean, there's no doubt marty was going to get nailed in the press if they lost no matter what. the 14-2 regular season record vs his 5-12 playoff record means it's an easy story for lazy writers to write. but i still think the pats would've lost if he'd handed the ball off.

xpost- marty said something about "wanting to be aggressive" in a press conference. i don't know if 4th and 11 is the time to do it but whatevs.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

Heavy rain that had been forecast didn't materialize, although there was a steady rain during most of the first quarter.

Technically, it was Cam Cameron who chose to do that, not Marty. I think we're all agreed that they needed to run the ball more and exploit the Pats run D in the 4th quarter.

I was wrong about the length of Kaeding's kick in the Jets game... it was only 40 yards. Not sure about what plays Cameron called in that one, it was a while ago.

wikipedia: The Mohawk is often thought to have been worn by the Mahican and Mohawk tribes, but this is in fact a misnomer; it is believed that the Wyandot were in fact the first Native American tribe to wear the hairstyle, but early French explorers mistook them for the Mohawk tribe.
During World War II, members of the Allied Airborne soldiers (specifically the 101st Airborne Division - the "Screaming Eagles") shaved their hair into Mohawks.[1][2]
The Clonycavan Man, a 2300-year-old male bog body found near Dublin, Ireland was found to be wearing a Mohawk, held together with plant oil and pine resin imported from southwestern France or Spain.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

indy's postseason d is really being overrated here: first they stack the line daring kc to beat them in the air and hermedwards politely declines; then baltimore has no offense anyway; now peoples all omg they've really stepped it up.

not say they can't win, but they're gonna have to put up some points.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

it's somehow "peyton's time" whatever the fuck that means. last night i had a flashback to 2001 and this pats team really reminds me of that one. no name receivers (ricochet caldwell and jabar gaffney instead of troy brown and david patten), under-rated line that didn't start to gel until late in the season, corey dillon instead of antoine smith as the plodding rb who won't bust one for more than a 20 yard gain, and a defensive secondary that is suspect against a more talented opponent. though this secondary isn't nearly as talented as the one that featured lawyer milloy, ty law, tebucky jones, and otis smith.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Your entire team has the flu, you jagbags or whatever that word was. Of course everyone is picking the Colts. Also: the Colts have already proven they can beat your team multiple x so they no longer have the "Oh can't beat the Pats" stigma going on, which helps people be more willing to pick them.

also:
indy's postseason d is really being overrated here: first they stack the line daring kc to beat them in the air and hermedwards politely declines; then baltimore has no offense anyway; now peoples all omg they've really stepped it up.

dude this is retarded. I mean, I'm not saying either team played wonderfully at all (obviously) but it is pretty obvious that their d is a completely different unit right now than it was just 3 weeks ago. Like, impressively so. And I think everyone has accepted the fact that the play of their d alone is NOT enough to beat the Pats--everyone I've heard previewing the game has stressed that part of the equation is that no one thinks Peyton is going to have three terrible games in a row (note: I'm not sure what this theory is exactly based on).

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

okay but i never said that the bears weren't suspect in many ways; part of that is due to injury (RIP Tommie Harris, the true key to Cover 2) and part of it is due to the well-known offensive struggles.

all i am saying is that the saints got their issues too is all i'm saying.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

I think what we should believe is that they've been faking being bad all year long, because that's the only thing that truly makes sense.

i actually respect jaworski's opinion and shit.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

The part I like about that Simmons piece: his acknowledging that everyone hates the Patriots now, and that they are basically the Yankees. The part I didn't like: see above (his refusal to connect the hatred to the Brady/Belichek dicksuckery).

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

i do think simmons makes a good point abt why pats fans have a hard time understanding why people hate the patriots so - the whole thing is just so absurdly, delightfully improbable it's like u hate the patriots? the ones who play in foxboro? the most pitiful team eva? rilly?

but of course non-fans were busy not paying any attention to the shitty pats all those years.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

JUST CAUSE THE PATZ ARE A DYNASTY DOESNT MEAN THEYRE THE YANKEES WHO ARE EXTRA HATEFUL FOR MANY REASONS **** IT IS OK TO HATE THE PATS BUT THERE HAVE BEEN MANY DYNASTIES AND NONE OF THEM ARE THE YANKEES EXCEPT THE YANKEES OK!!!!

his acknowledging that everyone hates the Patriots now, and that they are basically the Yankees.

i don't see this. i think maybe the steelers of the '70s are a more apt comparison but whatever. and as far as the belibrady dicksuckery, what can they do about that?

i think the fact that belicheck is not "cuddly" anymore and tom brady has that vacant jock personality doesn't help either. i know being cuddly doesn't win super bowls, obv, or lovie would have won 3 by now. i'm going to assume the pats will win it all this year and pray for other results.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Ally are you denying that people all over the U.S. hate the Patriots the same way they hate the Yankees, just on principle, and that part of the reason for this is the fact that the Patriots have won several championships? Because y'know maybe I am not cornering the market on crack cocaine after all.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

Which is not to say that I don't agree about Simmons' fuckbaggery. I have gone on record against him before (Yard Work as my witness). I just thought this column had a surprising amount of introspection from old girl.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

i remember when the yankees won in '96, everyone seemed to be rooting for them. maybe because the braves were, at that point, the yankees of the NL.

‘•’u (gear), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

In 1996 my head exploded because I couldn't root for either one of those team.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

No, I'm not saying that people don't just hate the Patriots on principle for winning several championships, I'm saying that I don't think it is comparable, or as ingrained, as the Yankees or Cowboys hatred. That comes from sustained, multiple periods of dominance!

xpost the Braves, now that is a team I can get behind hating.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

Because I hated their uniforms when I was 7, and it's stuck ever since.

while completely wrong-headed, this is actually pretty funny.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

i think the general sports-viewing public is tolerant of two championships from a team, but once they start rolling after that, the tide turns.

‘•’u (gear), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's more the arrogance than the dominance. Cowboys have also been the suck and so have Yankees sometimes. But if either team (or its fanbase) had ever just said 'you know what, let's not be assholes about this', they'd have a lot better time. A lot of people also just like Teams That Win, and so the Pats have a lot of nat'l fans who happen to be all dirtbaggy about it. Nothing like a Patriots fan in like Idaho or whatever!

The Colts’ defense
Posted by Doug on Thursday, January 18, 2007

Is there any hope that the Colts can continue to play defense the way they have in the postseason (14 points allowed in two games) instead of the way they did during the regular season (an average of 22.5 points per game)?

Is there any precedent for this kind of defensive turnaround in the postseason? To investigate, I checked all playoff teams since 1978 who were below average defensively during the regular season (in terms of points allowed per game) and then won two playoff games on the strength of their defense. Here are the closest matches I could come up with:

================+===========+===========+===========+
TM YR PPG | Game 1 | Game 2 | Game 3 |
================+===========+===========+===========+
ram 1989 21.5 | phi 21- 7 | nyg 19-13 | sfo 3-30 |
hou 1979 20.7 | den 13- 7 | sdg 17-14 | pit 13-27 |
buf 1991 19.9 | kan 37-14 | den 10- 7 | was 24-37 |
cin 1988 20.6 | sea 21-13 | buf 21-10 | sfo 16-20 |
hou 1978 18.6 | mia 17- 9 | nwe 31-14 | pit 5-34 |

Nothing like a Patriots fan in like Idaho or whatever!

you can't blame the kraft family or belibrady because the team elicits more loyalty than the geography does.

and i don't know about the bosox org being more assholish than the yanquis. but dear god the bandwagon jumpers who claim to be "long-time fans" drive me insane. where were they when butch hobson was running the team into the ground?

current meme that is driving me crazy: bob sanders is what's making the colts defense so awesome. he's a good player and i like watching him, but he's not magically making everyone tackle properly nor is he making adjustments to the scheme. haikunym otm about tommie harris, which is why the success of indy's defense is probz hella unsustainable - their 3-technique tackle is BOOGER MCFARLAND lmbo.

SEACREST OUT OF IRAQ! (Adrian Langston), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

where do you figure they went? i know daisy buchanan's was notorious for the sox and their groupies hanging out there. and didn't bird bust a finger in a bar fight in f'ing CHARLESTOWN during the playoffs one year? wtf was he doing in charlestown in the early/mid 80s? there's only one valid excuse and i don't think he had that kind of problem.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 22 January 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

Patriots fans? They don’t deserve a win. They’re me-too turds, who’ve played their whole lives “close-to-the-vest,” championing risk-averse entertainment like Buffalo Tom or Letters to Cleo. But now that their squad has won three of the last five Super Bowls, they walk around like they had a role in it all. It’s not hard spotting them. Look for the guy at the bar in the soft cotton Patagonia hiking jacket wearing a distressed baseball cap, nursing a Sam Adams, talking about his law school payments, his mortgage, and his med-student wife’s excellent cooking. Then look again four hours later as he’s drunkenly weeping into his cellphone, “Beth!!!!!!!” Their highest aspiration is either to litigate a case where someone poorer than them loses the rest of their money, or turn on the TV one night and see a little of themselves in a character in a David E. Kelley drama. Wait, that was only the white-collar fans I was talking about. The rest of them just want to fuck Johnny Damon’s ex-wife, then get her to maybe buy them a convertible.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 22 January 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

in all honesty, dar1a, I do hate Belicheck and Brady, but I'm mostly relieved for Peyton Manning and happy for Tony Dungy right now.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 22 January 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Monday, 22 January 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know, I really wanted to see the Pats win but beyond that.. fail to get the hate for Brady, really can't recall him doing anything obnoxious.. Belicheck seems rather brusque and unfuzzy but 1) seems not unusual among coaches and 2) this is New England, see #1

Tho jorel, where the hell is that thing from?? What a weird quote. Though Letters to Cleo is pretty terrible.

actually what i do wonder is, if i studied more (thx NFL network!) where i was getting a better in depth sense of the strategy/game plan behind what's happening on the field.. would it be easier to foresee the outcome beyond "oh shit I have a bad vibe about this game" which I did once Indy got that TD to start off the second half.

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 22 January 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

Biggest comeback win ever in the AFC championship ...

Brady chokes on the last two drives ...

Even when the Pats were up 21-3, was anybody getting flashbacks to Indy-Pittsburgh last year? I was.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 22 January 2007 08:55 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and the current baseball equivalent of the Pats is the A's, (except for Brady = Jeter) with Belichick in the Billy Beane role. Come on, don't pretend that the whole sports world wouldn't hate the A's if they won championships.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 22 January 2007 08:58 (eighteen years ago)

a perfectly shitty ending to a perfectly shitty weekend where not one god damn thing went right for me.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Monday, 22 January 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Caldwell dropping all those passes really looked bad. It also looked like Brady was letting the pressure get to him, though I still can't figure out what the Colts did to shut down the run game.

you guys locked down harrison all day but were somehow not able to stop DAN KLECKO. or Dallas Clark! After the half Peyton & Moore must have figured Harrison & Wayne were mostly a lost cause so they just started using them to open up the inside, take the Pats' fastest backs and force them to chase go routes down the sideline, letting the white dudes get it in the middle of the field and pick up bunches of yards after the catch.

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Monday, 22 January 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

bethel johnson, 2nd round pick (45th overall), wr out of texas a&m. cut before camp this year. signed with the browns as a return man and i think he's out of football.

chad jackson, 2nd round pick (36th overall, 4th pick of 2nd round, traded up to get him) wr from florida. was in the dog house with belicheck most of the pre-season, "injured" most of the regular season.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

oh well maybe the patz will finally be inspired to get some real receivers for once

really! i don't know, maybe belichek thinks they fit a role on the offense and yeah ok but not if they DROP passes at critical moments

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

Cripps is the Browns return man, I don't think Bethel ever played a down (unless on some special teams coverage)

yeah, i remember watching some early browns games looking for him and never saw him hence the speculation that he was out of football.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, for some reason this:

Quotations always need their proper context. But sometimes they're better without context. This is one of those cases. Following the game Sunday, Peyton Manning said: "I don't get into monkeys." Now, you can Google that phrase and find the AP article with the full quote and what prompted it. Or you can just imagine we live in a world in which a reporter asked Manning after reaching his first Super Bowl: "Dude, I hear you're into monkeys." I suggest the latter.

keeps making me crack up. Manning seemed so flustered in the press conference that he couldn't quite get idiomatic expressions right.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

WTF was Jim Nance saying at the end?

TO THOSE OF YOU WHO THOUGHT PEYTON WOULD NEVER MAKE IT TO THE SUPER BOWL. YOU WERE WRONG!!!

lk (lawrence kansas), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

standing on shoulders is cracking me up. Maybe that guy is into monkeys.

xpost yeah! I thought that quote was fucking weird too! "To those of you, the naysayers, the people who said Peyton would never make it to the Super Bowl, never be in the big game....(insert a lot of uhhhhhh pausing wait I didn't actually have a clever line here)...YOU WERE WRONG!!" It's like, uh, snap?

Allyzay doesnt get into the monkeys or vindications (allyzay), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

-- TOMBO7 (tombo...), January 22nd, 2007 10:10 AM. (TOMBOT) (later) (admin)

yeah they were getting killed in the middle of the field. clark on vrabel is a much more forgiving matchup for the colts than hobbs or samuel. indy used a lot more no huddle in the second half too and they really raped the bejeezus outta NE. dudes just were not coming off the ball, and the d-line getting gassed (and the offense not sustaining drives) just makes the pokey LBs & safeties more vulnerable. they could really use a Lance Briggs or Adalius Thomas. also it'd be nice if tom brady wasn't a HUEG CHOKER LOLOLOL

i think the most frustrating thing abt this game is that i was ready for indy to win yet it started all dominant and gave me false hope. so there is the disappointed part of me, but also the part of me that has grown to despise all other NE fans (except kev, u my dogg) and their boundless arrogance and is a little bit delighted it ended this way.

aidsy (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

they could really use a Lance Briggs

i don't think the pats will spend the money on him that some other team undoubtedly will. but it would be nice to have colvin and briggs on the field at the same time. tully banta-cain is a decent player and a great pick up for a 7th round pick but he has the speed and stamina of the defensive lineman that he was.

i'm looking for the pats to blow up their team in the offseason and pretty much start from scratch again. apart from the dline starters and possibly tedy bruschi i don't think anyone on defense is guaranteed a roster spot next year. and bruschi would probably be at kraft's insistance. just as he's promised troy brown a job when he's done playing i think bruschi is one of the guys kraft wants as a "patriot for life".

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

also using bizarro gadget stunts in the red zone seems to help Peyton get over his demons by about 570%. I bet we could've beat Florida back in the day if Fulmer had the guts/brains to pull some shit like that.

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

briggs and rosie would TEAR SHIT UP. and yeah, tully's just too damn slow, s'why they had alexander on the field for most of the game. vrabel needs to be phased out of starting duty.

i think kraft in particular would've loved to keep a ton of guys as pats for life - milloy, vinatieri, mcginest - and if there wasn't a salary cap he would've paid out the ass to do so. i think the pats-are-sofa-king-cheap meme is a tiny bit overstated, i mean they paid rodney more than anyone in the league wanted to by a significant margin. i'm getting more and more nervous about asante samuel though. maybe he's overperforming cuz it's a contract year, but C'MON. the d-line is probz the best in the league, except maybe for san diego, and they're ALL YOUNG. seymour's your oldest guy and he's just entering his prime. that's something to be super stoked about. hobbs has been awesome. there's a lot of young talent there.

(haha i'm doing exactly what i hate the most abt pats fans now, where they act like everyone cares about the minutiae of their team and that dan koppen getting an extension is news that everyone needs to know and that every new fourth-string role player is another cog in the brilliant belichickian machine and blah blah bloo bloo)

aidsy (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

Tom, I'm glad someone else at UTK has taken up your paranoid ramblings for future generations to come.

xpost dude the pats are still pretty well under the salary cap. I mean, they're not in Eagles territory but they aren't exactly the Falcons either (btw wtf do the Falcons spend all that money on?).

Hawkeye's erupted last night as Tennessee Now members learned their party had swept the top SGA seats of president and vice president.

James Kirkland and Tausha Carmack are the new leaders of the undergraduate student body.

Kirkland won the presidency with 1,534 votes to Student Voice presidential candidate Travis Wright's 1,258.

Party of Darkness presidential hopeful Tom Millar took third place with 120 votes, and 30 voters wrote in Peyton Manning, giving the quarterback fourth place.

aidsy (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

vrabel needs to be phased out of starting duty.

no, they need to keep vrabel inside at this point. i think he could take on the role roman phifer had as the veteran who's lost a step (or 10) but still gets by on experience or intuition or whatever you want to call it.

unless i missed an extension i think richard seymour's contract is up this year too.

i think the pats-are-sofa-king-cheap meme is a tiny bit overstated, i mean they paid rodney more than anyone in the league wanted to by a significant margin

yeah, i know they'll pay for talent, look at the contract they put down for rosey colvin. but i think briggs is such a dominant player someone will greatly overpay for his services. and that's one thing i don't expect from belicheck and pioli.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

Allyzay doesnt get into the monkeys or vindications (allyzay), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

seriously he's still taking up like 10 million in space. i don't think his cap hit is off the books until next year. also i don't understand cap shit that well but i think the pats' situation is a little misunderstood, cf. this bit from the blobe (i meant to type globe but blobe makes sense too) last week:

And as for the millions in cap space, I’ve been doing some research on this area and believe I’ve uncovered some interesting information in regards to the team’s cap spending that sheds a little bit of a different light on things. Because the team had such high cash spending the previous two years — with the top-level Tom Brady and Richard Seymour deals leading the way — the Patriots project to be one of a handful of teams who will actually be penalized by the league as part of the new CBA, and I believe will lose some cap space in a future season (possibly 2007) because of that. The Colts are also part of the small handful of teams who I think will be penalized; it’s sort of like the luxury tax in baseball. I believe the Patriots would do a service to their fans by explaining this intricacy of the salary cap — assuming I have it correct — because I sense there is a perception out there that the team is not spending compared to other teams. In actuality, they’ve spent to a level that is actually going to penalize them.

aidsy (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

a dominant LB is also worth less than a dominant, say, QB or DL.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6378468

The defining player of Patriots coach Bill Belichick's career is Lawrence Taylor, the outside linebacker he coached when he was on Bill Parcells' staff with the New York Giants. Belichick learned with the Giants that players like Taylor, who truly changed the game, are so rare that they're worth every penny a team spends on them. Belichick has decided with this group of Patriots that two such players exist, quarterback Tom Brady and defensive lineman Richard Seymour, and then he's found a second tier of players who — while they haven't earned the kind of money Brady and Seymour have — got bigger paychecks in New England than they would have received elsewhere. New England even gave lineman Billy Yates a $400,000 salary, making him the highest-paid practice squad player in league history.

maybe we should make an all-purpose pats/massholes thread to spare everyone else

aidsy (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

That's weird and doesn't make very good sense, I've not heard of that before. I know that they DIDN'T have as much room under the salary cap a few years ago because of a couple of those deals, and the way the contracts were structured is part of why they DO have so much space now, but I'd never heard of this at all??? As long as they were under the salary cap, why would they be penalized?
