America Road Trip part 3 (sept 03)

provided i move to cheaper place, and the may trip goes ok, i'm going to do the next bit in september

option#1. seattle-san francisco

option#2. chicago-seattle

option#3. chicago-san francisco

i am leaning in favour of #1 at the minute. but if there are any different suggestions, or perhaps detours/stopoffs on the way which seem like a good idea, then...suggest!

and if anyone fancies coming along for part of the journey, or anyone has a car, or if anyone wants to post pictures of my head floating above their city, then this is the thread to do it!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

you could do all of these by rail, too.

hstencil, Friday, 16 May 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If it were me, I would probably pick option one too. Not to knock Chicago, which I think is great, but I think Seattle and San Francisco would be nicer at that time of year.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Options 2 and 3 sound like too much Midwest to deal with. Not a lot between Chicago and Seattle. Unless you like cows.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread in being a Gareth thread uber non-shockah!

Come visit me in San Francisco! Then we can actually meet face to face! In a duel!

The Amtrak between Chicago and SF is meant to be amazing, and I look forward to travelling this route often to visit my soon-to-be inlaws.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

However, I have done this trip by bus, and yes, it is a bit low on actual "stuff", if you're stuck for time.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not do SF up in to Canada?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Pacific Coast Highway!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

between Chicago and Seattle = Rocky Mountains = some of the most beautiful scenery in America

but yeah, once you get into Iowa, it gets slightly dull.

hstencil, Friday, 16 May 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the fact that we now have to have a disclaimer about which threads it's ok to post Gareth's floating head of doom in.

Gareth, if you do option one, I might go with you, depending on my finances.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I read that as "depending on my fiances". Which made sense, in a weird way. (Don't hit me, Ally!) ;)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone knows I'm just using this as an excuse to get engaged to Gareth, come on.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Possible extra destination, then...

http://members.aol.com/richsuzwed/photo/vivlasus.jpg

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Do option #1! We'll feed you lots of yummy Seattle coffee & you can soak in the Pacific Ocean.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That is the wonderful thing about Seattle, coffee on every streetcorner. It almost makes me want to move there.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too. But for my aching belli.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

belli=the plural of belly. I am a cow.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth is you can manage Vancouver BC to San Francisco, that would be ultimate... but of course, I'm going to say "OPTION #1".

#1 is the most practical and less harrowing anyway. Chicago to the west coast is a LOOOOOOONG way compared to going along the west coast itself. Also, you'd get a chance to see Portland too.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

well its pretty much #1 unless someone is going to do some driving on one of the other options;)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.ramb.ethz.ch/sabbatical2002/2002-07-20/legoland_miniland-san-francisco.jpg

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth -- one trip at a time!

and go to sf, my sister lives there so i can come

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Option one! It would be grand, and you'll be able to see the fine reaches of Eureka and Crescent City, not to mention Weaverville and Weed. Er, if you like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

why is the sun shining in that picture of sf there?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, do you like work for the travel channel or something?

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, if ally and i go to sf with gareth can we be sandy and what was the other one's name?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you mean Rizzo.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 16 May 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

summer 73

gareth (gareth), Friday, 16 May 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

linda

gareth (gareth), Friday, 16 May 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, I'll be Linda.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 16 May 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

cool i wanted to be sandy

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Do we get to wear silky scarves? and big sunglasses?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and we can wear our matching team jackets -- and the white tokyo ping pong one is still available if anyone else wants to come along for the ride

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What? Did I hear my name?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha i didn't want to be presumptuous!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, post haste to Urban Outfitters, young lady! You need your white ping pong jacket! We should have a greasers and socs FAP anyway.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna be driving from LA to NO in late August. I expect it to be hell.

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If it were me, I'd do #1. But I've lived in Chicago my entire life and have never seen the Pacific Northwest. There is a buttload of nothing in between Chicago and let's say Denver--about 1000miles. The rest of the journey's scenery makes up for it though.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Greasers and Socs? I'm still getting caught up with my cowboy hat!

I feel so one step behind.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Garethhead is the greatest ILX meme of the millenium. I'm sooo happy to know it exists.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHAHA!

Stevem is an utter genius!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry Ned, soon our mighty army will ensure you are no longer the most Photoshopped face on ILX

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Between Gareth and Matos, the challenge is strong.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

now i have uncontestable proof of the wisdom of never posting me face on these boards ... i don't wanna ever find out what evil things you weirdos would do with my face.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 18 May 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but its a gesture of wuv

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 May 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

deeply disturbing, but best picture to date.

stevem, you are Terry Gillingham and I claim my five pounds.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 18 May 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That one is actually terrifying. Stop making gareth scary!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 May 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

1, definitely, and not just because I'm in the bay area. Like others said, chicago to seattle is deadly boring. And as far as denver being a city to stop at in b/w, I've been to denver, and it's best avoided.

The pacific northwest is beautiful although it could conceivably be raining during that month which might make driving a hassle, or a beautiful and exciting experience, depending on your temperment.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 18 May 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I prize to the first person who can come up with a game where eagle eyes gareth flies over the cities of the world destroying wedding guests with his eye lasers.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 18 May 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Pacific NW rain is almost always a steady, light drizzle, and so barely has any effect on driving. Every once in a while, we get a heavy downpour, but they rarely last even an hour... September's largely a pretty dry month, though.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 18 May 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

There's only a couple of folks in the Seattle ILXOR commune that have are currently active drivers.. a trip near Mt. Rainier would be nice, but I don't want to impose on them, unless they think it's a good idea and are into it.

Otherwise, gabbneb, Everett?? A Gareth-type place?? If Gareth-type places involve dishovel scrapyards, boring suburbia, with a sometimes great Cascades skyline, then so be it.

I'm more than prepared to give Gareth a full tour of the city proper, including a bus trip across to Redmond and back, just to see the views of Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker, weather permitting, while crossing the 520 Bridge. Also a visit to Alki shores in West Seattle, too.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

But a Seattle FAP is urgent and key in honor of Gareth's arrival... duh!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Seattle FAP thread here

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

dishovel scrapyards, boring suburbia

I was thinking the former, not the latter. Perhaps I don't understand.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I will personally give Gareth a tour of Emeryville.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Worst euphemism ever, @d@ml.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if there's a plan to go down to Tacoma, I'd be up for it, there's a lot of great architexture and dishoveled history there.. but it's not worth staying more than an hour for, unless a trip to the Glass Museum is in order.

(Gareth, too bad, you're missing the Christian Marclay exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum by 5 days)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Lest he catch sight of my El Cerrito, heaven forbid...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

All the advice Gareth will ever need.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

If Gareth reads that thread and doesn't want to go to Alviso, I have sorely overstimated him.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

overstimulated.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Whew. I'll be leaving Portland for SoCal on tour on May 4th, so while I'd be happy to meet up with you it would have to be before then.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You're missing somewhere.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless the costs of the ferries have gone up considerably since, a ferry ride to Bremerton and back to Seattle's downtown waterfront would be pretty urgent and key, if scenic views are the most important priority for Gareth.

(Maybe I should shut up and allow Gareth a chance to ask, himself, what he wants to get out of this trip)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

@dam: Who, me?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

He wants to eat at the Black Muslim Bakery in West Oakland. Then he wants to ride in an art car. Then he wants to go to the horse track in Albany. Then he wants a burrito...

yes,you

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

...and then, only then, can he think about going across that bridge, maybe for Amoeba or something...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're asking whether the tour is coming to the Bay Area: It might. It's a tour of the *other* band I'm in, so I'm not in charge of booking shows. Though if you can set up a show...

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Little old me? I'm new to these parts, I wouldn't have a clue where to start. It's an intriguing idea though!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

What is this *other* band, Chris?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fugees.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Chris that guy that goes "one time...two times..remix"?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

a trip near Mt. Rainier would be nice

actually, I read the info too quickly. While there's at least 10 feet of snow on the trails at Paradise, the road there seems to be open. The Visitor Center is open only on weekends, but I would think that you can still get up to the parking lot on weekdays.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

there are guided snowshoe tours on the weekends, and perhaps during the week

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The other band is called Celesteville, and these days I tend to play accordion in it. You can find out more at www.tapemountain.com.

My apologies to Gareth for the accidental thread hijack. Y'all can IM me or whatever for more details.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, tapemountain.com, home of well-known spoken word artists. Allegedly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

re: the ferries; I think the cost of the ferries did recently shoot up considerably, but still, for a two hour sightseeing tour, it's a tough price to beat. If the mountains aren't out, though, the value diminishes somewhat, and the Bainbridge ferry would probably do the trick.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, if deserted ghost towns are up Gareth's alley, downtown/waterfront Bremerton is perfect!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

shall we say, seattle fap may1st, sf fap may7th? (though i am sure i could do with a beer on april30th also after such a long flight!)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, if deserted ghost towns are up Gareth's alley, downtown/waterfront Bremerton is perfect!

Well, see, you HAVE to go there and take pictures now. Especially since clearly it was my birth there -- and therefore my malificient presence -- which caused the decline.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth, when do you have to leave Seattle? If you can be around on Sunday, May 2nd, that's useful information to know.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

As for that beer (or more) on April 30th, that can be arranged.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, Snow Patrol is playing in Seattle on May 2nd... Ask jess for a glowing recommendation.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The Wheedle on the Needle

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Panjabi MC on April 30th at the Showbox.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

also, High On Fire at Neumo's the same night

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

My Cali tour has been cancelled, so if you want to make a stop in Portland, it is now at your leisure.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i havent made any arrangement to leave seattle at all yet, so its flexible. i will email tomorrow brian, with more concreteyness, when i am a little more sober

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

no problem, gareth.

(sad about cancellation of Celesteville tour)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Point No-Point

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dungeness Spit

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

More local-toe-stepping nostalgia. My favorite takeout food... omg croissants, madeleines, and baguettes from the Boulangerie in Wallingford. Pasta & Co.'s AT&T Salad (no more?) and vermicelli. at the Market - tacos and tamales from El Puerco Lloron, gelato from Procopio, friands, pithiviers and palmiers from Le Panier, raspberries and blackberries from the non-highstall farms, nectarines, peaches and rainier cherries from Sosio's, and melons/corn/basil/all manner of produce from Whistling Train Farm, run by the surviving Verdi family members.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

You're missing Piroshkies from the market! And the tiny dozen-doughnuts-for-$1.90 stand.

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a personal list, but yes the piroshkies should be on an objective list

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

everett and mt 'claudio' rainier sound good, how far are they? i am to do some map looking tonite i think,

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 29 April 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

If I recall correctly, Paradise at Rainier is, at very best, three and a half hours by car to the Southwest. Everett is half an hour to the North.

(I am busy big-upping Seattle, but I imagine that there may be many more interesting or at least easier/less-imposing things to do in SF, where I've never been)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

er, Rainier is to the Southeast, rather. And while I think Everett is interesting to inspect from the road on the way somewhere else, I wouldn't call it a destination.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

U&K on your trip from PDX->SF to make a stop (for lunch/dinner maybe) at Ashland, about halfway between. Ashland is where they have a big Shakespeare festival and it's a sort of nice enough tourist trap town but what you really are going there for is to taste the water from the Lithia River. It has lithium in it naturally, it tastes sulphuric (some dig it, some don't), is said to be a tonic, and there are fountains that dispense it right downtown.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 29 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Everett is around 45-60 minutes north of Seattle. I've never been there. I've asked several long time locals "there MUST be something interesting in Everett", and everyone tells me "NO!". They could all be mental.

Going to Paradise in Rainier would be great, but would be an all day adventure, and I don't know how many of us here have a car that will be free during the weekend or weekday to make the trip.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 29 April 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, thinking of arriving portland, tuesday afternoon...
