Gondry rulz

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

If Spike Jonze still made music videos and MTV still played music videos I would sooooo still have cable.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I got it a couple of days ago, it's such a nice thing to have. I heart you mr. gondry.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

did you watch the gondry doc yet s1utsky? (btw i was wrong: that b jaxx video w/ the monkeys isn't by cunningham)

jones (actual), Friday, 7 November 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched the first half of it while I was falling asleep, it was very charming

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

slutsky, where did you buy it? does it have everything he's done (music vid wise) I've been waiting for this for so long!!!

Elliot (Elliot), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I ordered it from Amazon, as I don't think you can get 'em here in Quebec. Stupid Quebec video-stickering bullshit!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

arrrrgghh. thanks.

Elliot (Elliot), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
i really wanted the sean lennon video for "home" and the "it's all about the benjamin's (rock remix)" video to be on the spike comp.

and i'm also disappointed that stardust's "music sounds better than you" video isn't on gondry's comp.

i wonder what the reasoning is for these omissions.

reo, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the gondry disc is really really stuffed; also maybe there were licensing issues

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Gondry's the best for sure. Jonze has too much shit for one volume. Cunningham is only as good as the people he works for, but still striking.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the jonze one double-sided?

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yup

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ARGH SEAN LENNON STONE HIM

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You seem ill at ease.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
OMG I just got these. Best DVDs ever.

Enrique (Enrique), Sunday, 6 June 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

that gondry doc is great.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 6 June 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...
So I finally gave in and rented the Gondry DVD and I really want to echo Mitch's sentiment above. I have been a bit reserved in my admiration of Gondry and refrained from any real acknowledgement of him as an auteur of any kind. When I worked for an ad agency I would end up having to watch his reel almost every single day because he was really the only director (along with Glazer and maybe Tony Kaye-what happened to him?) that anybody really wanted to use, if they could afford him. But the documentary really does show him to have an impressive sensitivity to all of the tools available to him as a director, and a genuine bravery to follow through on even the most apparently inconsequential of ideas. I wound up with quite a grudging admiration for the guy, even if I felt it was a little unnecessary for the documentary to revel in every single brainfart and half-idea.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

1) Has this 'directors series' done anything else since?
2) I agree that the gondry doc is quite charming and fun-- too bad he didn't speak at the oscars...
comparing between the three, surprisingly to me, it is jonze who comes up short ...

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

That doesn't surprise me at all.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought cunningham came up short. i don't really understand why everyone thinks he's such a big genius.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Neat effects is why.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i got some neat effects for him right here

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The videos for "All Is Full of Love" and "Second Bad Vibel" are two of my favorite videos ever. The other Cunningham stuff is just okay (but I still like his videos better than Jonz and Gondry.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Cunningham's got some knack for capturing and reflecting a very precise, exquisite kind of beauty on film, as visceral as Glazer if not more so, but much more aware and enthusiastic wrt humour (at least with the Aphex and Squarepusher vids). the Bjork and Portishead vids are also gorgeous triumphs of direction.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i do like the all is full of love video, it's very hot.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

goddammit why isn't cunningham still doing neuromancer????

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And what DID happen to Tony Kaye?????

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

wish they would release the Mirrorball series on various directors on DVD

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that commercial where the guy holds up photo paper frames to his face (which then "capture" his face) one after the other a Gondry creation? It sure looks like one.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 3 March 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know that ad but he did a similar one for hp, so i imagine yeah

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 3 March 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

tony kaye is basically blacklisted from hollywood following a mondo epic battle with the studio/edward norton after american history x

adam, what ad agency did you work for? what did you do there?

new director's series dvds will be jonathan glazer, anton corbijn and mark romanek

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

eric, the commercial you're talking about is by francois vogel, another french director with similar sensibilities

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"tony kaye is basically blacklisted from hollywood following a mondo epic battle with the studio/edward norton after american history x"

I kind of figured as much.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

jonze is heavy back into commercials and videos, btw

his new adidas spot which comes out tomorrow is AWESOME. i hope someone somewhere will screen the 90 second version though, the 30 pales in comparison.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it online somewhere?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll link to it when i can, probably early next week

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i still haven't seen american history X because I refused to when it came out and I didn't feel like I'd be seeing a legitimate film (for some dumb reason). now people tell me it's the best movie ever. is the consensus now that norton was right?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It's an interesting film.

I emailed you, Mark.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

hard to say, kyle. i don't think there's any denying kaye's 'difficult' reputation, though. anyway, i did some digging and turned up this infamous fadein interview:

http://web.archive.org/web/20030628150244/www.fadeinmag.com/kaye/interview1.html

(thanks adam)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No thank YOU

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It's an pretty decent film. I have no idea if Kaye's version would have been great, but what did come out didn't turn out to be a disaster or anything. I will say that some of Kaye's complaints are legitimate ones.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

wow! what a pompous prick he came off! still, curious as to how the film would have turned out differently. it's one of those movies that i thought was pretty good without really caring one way or another about it.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 4 March 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Am so psyched about Glazer and Romanek -- but when are they going to drop? 'Birth' was a really underrated movie. 'One Hour Photo' was a quite underrated movie.

NRQ, Friday, 4 March 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

yeh i liked it, and not just aesthetically (tho yeh of course that was a big factor)

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 4 March 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

there was supposed to be a Hype Williams one in the pipeline

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 4 March 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

my lacanian non-aesthetic appreciation of 'one hour photo' is accessible [to the rich] here: http://www.timeout.com/film/66061.html

helas all proceeds go directly to... someone who isn't me.

NRQ, Friday, 4 March 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

i wanna see "birth!"

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

NRQ, I want to read your " lacanian non-aesthetic appreciation of 'one hour photo'"!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

birth is great! reminded me of polanski more than anything else.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I think I loved Birth, in retrospect. One Hour Photo not so much.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm awlays right, by the way.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

here's a link to the 90 second cut of the jonze spot i was talking about earlier. (also, i would appreciate it if people cut and pasted this into their browser rather than directly hyperlinking to it. thanks.)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

That is very pretty.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

that's karen o singing the song too!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

haha Spencer: My Sick Theory Shame. It actually mentions 'Peeping Tom' iirc.

NRQ, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

But of course!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

No shame to your game, etc...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Birth was my favorite movie from last year... I was genuinely sad that it was so roundly dismissed and that it made so little money... It will just make things that much harder on Glazer. Granted, I was not that into Sexy Beast. It had good working parts, but didn't come together for me.
He's done some great commercials, so I hope they make it onto this.

For some reason this compels me to say I'm excited to see "Millions"... maybe anthony dod mantle also did the cinematography for birth? don't remember.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

that's the most twee shoe commercial ever

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I think I really really like Sexy Beast

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't stand it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

really?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I have the same thing with Birth. I saw it and thought it was interesting, okay...and it has become this great thing in my imagination!

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Truly. I thought it was gonna be amazing, but it just made want to watch old Bob Hoskins flicks instead.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I like films set in Spain.

Ah, okay. But I don't think the things I enjoy about SB are the things I get from watching a film like Long Good Friday ( which is one of my favourite films ever ). I don't think of it as a gangster film at all, I don't even care about the dialogue all that much, I think of it as this weird sweaty fever dream of a film.

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

My sweaty dreams are better. Also Ray Winstone has a meatier role in them.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

The DVD menu on the Gondry one is awesome.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Alex, no.

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Adam, yes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

'birth' was shot by harris savides {'the game', 'elephant'). ADM did 'dogville' i think.

NRQ, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

is harris savides the big fat guy?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 10 March 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
tony kaye is basically blacklisted from hollywood following a mondo epic battle with the studio/edward norton after american history x

What did the battle entail?

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Saturday, 28 October 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

Basically he accused Norton and the studio of conspiring to re-edit the movie/increase Norton's Jesus-ness/watering it down/etc. He was really really vocal about it and for a time was demanding that his name be taken off the film Alan Smithee stylee. It didn't happen, but it pretty much assured he wouldn't be making anything in Hollywood again.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 28 October 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait this sums it up better than I can:
