When did ILX go from being something special to being just another shitty internet forum?

When FatNick started posting?

Charles Dexter (Holey), Saturday, 7 February 2004 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Only FatNick could have posted this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 February 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Not me, donut bitch. I posted a bit 2 yrs ago, since then part-time lurking.

Charles Dexter (Holey), Saturday, 7 February 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't necessarily accusing you.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 7 February 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, I missed, yet, another classic era of somethinorutha. I've suffered from bad timing all my life.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 7 February 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

When people started asking "when did ILX get so shit" every 15 fucking minutes. God get over it already.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 7 February 2004 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

All forums have up to an 18 month honeymoon period. 'objectively' this might be from the start, 'subjectively' its 18 months from the first time you posted. in actuality its somewhere between the two.

Viral Marketeer, Saturday, 7 February 2004 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Let me tell you a secret - not only is it not what it used to be; it never was what it used to be!"

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 8 February 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Has ILE Gone Down The Dumper? is a rough starting point to ILE quality analysis, though I don't know the frequency with which this kind of query was repeated from this point. Also, there is a touch of the devil's advocate about said thread, rather than an unequivocal statement of ILE shittiness. When did we start calling the boards ILX?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 8 February 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

When we moved here?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 8 February 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the answer is probably something like: when it stopped being a relatively small group of individuals with a core of shared interests and perspectives which were close enough to allow for dialogue but different enough to keep it interesting (and maybe a similar intelligence level); as opposed to the free-for-all it is now. (I was not part of the first group, for anyone new enough not to know that.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist, your answer suggests that you feel the ILX boards would be better if fewer people read/posted to them. Surely a closed community (say, requiring password access) could be created if that were the objective of ILX?

I'm curious in regards to why those who do not like the current state of the boards continue to read and post. Are you hoping that the cycle will come completely around, and the forum will again be just like the forum you once enjoyed?

webcrack (music=crack), Sunday, 8 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

that was an answer to the ilx thing.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 8 February 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

webcrack, I am nu-ILM, not old school ILM. I wasn't part of what it was in the beginning. The fall had already occurred by the time I started posting here. I'm not completely convinced by my explanation but I think it might be true. Despite their drawbacks, I still tend to prefer open-ended kinds of forums. Anyway, I'm not quite as serious about it as I sound, not that I'm joking either.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't really come across this forum until late 2001, so I probably never read it before 'the fall'. I guess it's hard for me to put this debate in context as I don't know what the forum was like in the 'good old days' that I see people nostalgically refer back to from time to time. Thanks for the clarification, though.

webcrack (music=crack), Sunday, 8 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

In a way it's the ambient shittiness which has always been the Unique Selling Proposition of ILX. I think I've come here for two reasons:

1. Because the pages are some of the internet's fastest-moving.
2. To have arguments with people whose worldviews are different from mine.

At the moment I'm putting more effort into my LiveJournal page. I'm enjoying the friendliness of LJ and Friendster (which has the internet's slowest-moving pages). I don't see myself any time soon staying up for three days on a thread about Bush or boshi*, battling Blount, Jess, and John Darnielle. But neither am I going to say ILX got worse, or that there was ever a 'golden age'.

* Boshi = hat in Japanese. The alliteration was irresistible.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 8 February 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm here because of Momus, anyway, I found ILX on his 'links' page....so I blame Momus for the supposed decline of ILX.

webcrack (music=crack), Sunday, 8 February 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The minute I opened this godforsaken thread. CHUCKY BOY, GET A LIFE!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This is another thread that sucks monstrous elephant vagina.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"When was it"? ...Er, was it, perhaps, when amateur!st rolled the toilet paper and then, if memory serves, I, of all people, got into talking shit, not to mention shooting crap, with, of all people, a twelve-year-old?

*unable to keep straight face in face of all the stink*

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry have you been to the zoo recently?

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(don Rockisto, excuse me for interfering, briefly, with your line of zoological Perry-query here but, eh, just wanted to say I sent you an e-mail (nothing to do with 'lephants or ''ginas, tho) (or shit)))

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry have you been buying certain kinds of videos on ebay again?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope I'm not in trouble, t\'\'t. I have to really concentrate to get your name correct, incidentally.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan you certainly do have a way with the Japanese noise-band names.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it really difficult. There are so many threads, and I don't know which ones to open. Then some of them are too long to read all the gubbins of. Or I join in a conversattion and find the thread has disappeard through the floorboards by the next day. But this is the only forum I've found where you can post up any old jollop, so I will keep trying.

I prefer "I Love Books" at the moment, which is manageable; I already feel I'm getting to know some of the charming people there. We all warm our hands round the same fireplace.

R the bunged up with jollop of V (Jake Proudlock), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It went to shit when people decided friendship and respect were lame.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The only development I'm particularly concerned about is when regular posters change their screen names, with no indication of who they might be. This destroys any feeling of community, IMHO, but my voice goes unnoticed here.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

mr dan1elle otm.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

No Sean I agree with you. I too lose track of who's who in the name change carousel, and it is especially not nice when "some people" seem to know who the person under the name change is but not others. Isnt that a tad elitist? Or was that what "oldskool" ILX was all about? If so gimme the nu werld any day.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm very new to this board and have never posted anywhere else prior to here. It feels like I came late to a party that didn't require an invitation, and missed out on a lot of the inside stuff. I read threads that I think I may have some interest in or knowledge of and have tried to say something worthwhile or just plain idiotic as the thread may be going. For what its worth: I have found this a likeable place to be.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

When was ILX ever NOT just another shitty internet forum?
It's like asking "when did Sonic Youth stop mattering?"
It's 110% subjective, amigo.
Me, I'm just here because the coffee's better here than at ShatnerBBS.

i was gonna say when YOU left ... then you CAME BACK :0

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 9 February 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

when hanle y stopped posting regularly (i'm at least 1/2 serious).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 9 February 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that's true; also when yancey and stence stopped posting nearly as much as they used to; also when saul williams stopped posting; and when people started giving dave q jobs meaning ilx got less of the genius; also when ramosi violated his parole; and also also ALSO when tom + ally/jbr + chris hooked up (aint you fukkers seen them moonlighting reruns on lifetime?).

also i think the absence of the greenspun blackouts and the 'return to normalcy's that lent some people hurt too maybe. some people have definitely done gone thru the rabbit hole with this place.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, ILX sucks cause I POST MORE than i used to.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 9 February 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

jim wentworth, please, come in and stay awhile. I have fresh memories of walking into this arena for the first time and I remember how utterly and truly frightening it was for me, particularly because I wasn't used to dealing with the types of individuals I see around here. I think, though, that with time I've come to become comfortable with this place -- well, as comfortable as one can be.

Honestly, those people who are complaining about this "becoming just another shitty internet forum" are absolutely clueless. I've been to "shitty internet forums" before and they are even more ridiculously in-jokey, cliquey, parochial-minded, and averse to any overt signs of intellect than this forum could possibly be in its worst of days. Sure, those of you who've been on here for ages and ages might miss those days when you felt that close-knit feeling of camraderie, but you know what? Those of us who are new(er) to this forum aren't out to steal those warm and fuzzy connections away from anyone! We're just trying to feel our way around, see whom we can possibly connect with, try as hard as we can to not make ourselves look like wastes of space here, that sort of thing.

And I find the fact that this topic has been discussed a number of times in the decidedly short period of time *I've* been around these parts is quite distressing. Internet forums DO shift and change with time, but their origins are ALWAYS at the core of them, and those who claim to miss the "old" forum aren't digging deep enough to discover that the core is still intact, even with some of the old cast missing. (And I'm sorry that they're gone, but I had no control over them leaving, and besides, if you really miss someone from days gone by, you could always e-mail them or write them letters or whatever.)

*wonders if this should be posted*

*shrugs, clicks on Submit anyway*

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 9 February 2004 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes, and there are some days I hate that I feel like I can't contribute anything at all to this forum aside from the usual banal nonsense I go on about, but then the other days make up for it. I'm sorry I'm not a politically active liberal who listens to extremely obscure musical artists, partakes of more "high art" in terms of film and/or literature, has an active social life, drinks, and/or has had things published before, but I'm doing the best with what I've got and I would really like to continue being around here for a very long time to come so I guess you'll just have to put up with my banalities.

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 9 February 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I should mention that some of the people that i really enjoyed reading on ILM when i first started looking at it-HSTENCIL,YANCEY,NABISCO,MARK S,FRANK KOGAN-either no longer post there, or if they do it is infrequently. This, to me, is a bummer. And who knows, it may have even contributed to the change in tone that some people have noticed in the board.I still like ILM though. It's good for a laugh and i enjoy interacting with most of the people there.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX wavers with the content. When the contributors strive for superior entertainment, thoughtful and lively exchanges, and pointed commentary, then ILX thrives. When the conmtributors descend to jockeying for attention and vapid gossiping, then ILX suffers.

As a cure for the vapours, let me recommend that, if you see a thread that rises above the ruck, then join it and respond in kind. Avoid the temptation to wallow in the others. Over time, the culture of excellence will reassert itself as the competing dreck withers on the vine. Either that, or we all wear funny hats and get slobbering drunk.

Aimless, Monday, 9 February 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX is the worst internet forum, except for all the others.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey what'cha gonna do on Friday night
Where ya gonna go
We gotta find some action
Baby I'll meet ya at the Paradise
Start a little chain reaction
Hey anybody got a cigarette
Thanks
Anybody here got a dime
I heard that Frankie's got a blue Corvette
She said to call her any time
Anybody got a situation
Is there any place to go

We want cool kids
Out on the corner
Cool kids
Out on a limb
Cool kids
Looking for someone, looking for something
Looking for somebody
K-K-K-Kids are all right

We go cruising down the avenue
Lean out the window at the stop light
Just trying to shake up the Main Street blues
Try to break out into the hot night
Anybody got a situation
Is there any place to go

(chorus)

Anybody got an invitation
Is there any place to go
We want cool kids - so cool
We want cool kids
We want cool kids
Cool kids - Out on the corner
Cool kids - Out tonight
Cool kids
Cool kids - Out on the corner
Cool kids - Out tonight
Cool kids - Looking for trouble
Cool kids
C-C-C-C-C-C-C-Cool kids
Cool kids - ohhhh
Cool kids
I wanna be cool, I wanna be cool
Cool kids
Kids are all right
Cool kids
Out on the corner
Cool kids

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Have any of you even gone back and looked at old ILX threads? It doesn't matter whether your supposed Golden Period is "Before ILE" or around mid-to-late 2001 or whatever; the style and quality of posting has always been about the same. The only difference was that there were less people, so it was easier for them to think of themselves as a cohesive social group.

Oh and have you ever been to other message boards!? most people on most of them are completely incomprehensible/illiterate, unless maybe it's like a politics or books board or something. But as "general discussion" boards go, it is still the fact that no other board I've seen approaches ILX.
