Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ashy Larry told me that, too, but i don't believe him.

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

there was some survey on tv the other day that said that 11% of british people thought hitler never existed but 5% thought conan the barbarian was a real historical character. wtf? x 100

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you're like the bouquet at a wedding...you should advertise.

winterland, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry to bring people down, but the body count in WW1 still knocks me out.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

see Harper's Index for plenty more disturbing statistics on a monthly basis.

of course, they're designed to shock/disturb, so there's that.

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

To say nothing of the body count that *Japan* was responsible for in WWII?!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The last girl I kissed gave me money around an hour ago

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, you are the mack daddy. I wish I could train boys I kiss to give me money... except, wait, there's a word for that, isn't there?

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"domestic partnership"?

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

More than 60 of those interviewed said they thought the Battle of Helms Deep in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, featuring Elf kings and slavering Orcs, actually took place.

I'd still say they were taking the piss with the interview.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm the one with the proper job. Usually I have to give HSA the money. :-(

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"domestic partnership"?

that's two words, silly. the right answer is 'marriage'!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the joke clarification/killification there...

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The period of singleness I'm currently going through is more than twice as long as any period of singleness I have ever experienced since I started this whole sexual relationship business.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

You should get a little "X days since i last had sex" board to hang round your neck.

x-post

winterland, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that would be taking the whiny aspect of my personality a bit too far.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how many people would see it as a challenge, though?

Try it at Glasters.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You could just hand girls you like the look of a little 'ZERO' card and smile winningly.

winterland, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it's more than X days...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I read about a survey which found that the country that watches the most cinema per head is the Lebanon. That's surprising in itself, but Lebanon's lead was boggling. People in Lebanon go to the cinema 36 times a year on average, apparently. The second nation on the list was China with 9.

I asked a Lebanese friend about this and she said that over there it's a whole social occasion, and they eat meals in the cinema, have parties there, and go in huge groups.

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

it's more than X days...

Yes, maybe don't try it on any ancient Romans.

"X days...big deal...come back when it's been MMLXXVII days..."

winterland, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

As I said here: Shocking statistics I was astonished to learn that by the age of 40, 34% of British men have a criminal record, but no one else seemed to be.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Average number of handstands an adult male panda does daily : 8 [San Diego Zoo (Calif.) ]

this statistic makes me unjustifiably happy

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I was astonished to learn that by the age of 40, 34% of British men have a criminal record

I don't think there's any chance that this statistic is true. I remember Simon Hoggart arguing it was nonsense in the Guardian and I agree. The report you refer to got its figures from a 1995 report, and I would guess the person writing the 2nd report misunderstood what the first report was saying.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Phew.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I'd rather have someone other than oafish Simon Hoggart arguing the case.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps the number of convictions has been divided into the number of men, which wouldn't take into account the men who had multiple convictions.

I don't have any convictions, touch wood, apart from the conviction that this statistic is wrong.

And that Battenburg cake is the best.

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Since 1952 there has only been one election where a Bush, Nixon, or Dole has not been on the Republican ticket.

This is only four people, in fairness. It would be more impressive is there were like six members of each family (paricularly since there's only 13 elections)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 14 June 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone told me the other day that 13 pence in every consumer pound is spent in a branch of Tescos. There seems some internet verification for this, but it has to be an urban myth, right?

(The criminal record thing is pretty staggering).

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Monday, 14 June 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 14 June 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"there are more people alive than dead"

makes sense once you have a chance to think about it but it did indeed give me pause.

Slump Man (Slump Man), Monday, 14 June 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Soemone asking me recently whether I'd kissed any ILXors caused me to realise that the event in the first post here was from before there was an ILE. This staggered me slightly.
