Harder in real life than online?

We are constantly reminded that there are certain people on ILX who are harder online than in real life? But is there anyone here who would describe themseleves as being the other way round - harder in real life than online?

The 'online persona' thing is interesting - I would say, quite honestly, that I consider myself to be pretty much the same person online as I am in real life. I rarely stop and think about what I'm saying, I just rattle away on the keyboard saying the same things that I would say out loud.

But someone who knows me very well said to me recently that I am a completely different person online, and that he hardly recognised me from my posts. I found that strange.

no, Marcello's definitely harder online than in real life!

You mean he doesn't say "Don't try it" to all and sundry?

harder=more difficult? thats me

hopefully, some time I will have the opprtunity to find out. I'm amazed that i haven't already actually (see also Enrique). Now I'm imagining the situation where one's next door neighbour is an ilxor and one is unaware of it - now there's a thought...

I think I'm prolly about the same online as in real life, but Markelby once said he thought we were similar online but less so in real life. I wonder if he still thinks that?

no, really, he did say that - I'll try to finmd the thread and link to it.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 5 June 2004 08:57 (twenty years ago) link

I am more real and less hard online than in real life. In real life I wear my sweatshirt hood up and fix anyone who comes near me with a sullen, threatening glare; while online I get excited about kittens and say things like "yay!" and "HUGGLEZ!!!"

Who's "hard" online?

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 5 June 2004 08:59 (twenty years ago) link

it was only a matter of time.....groan!

I know but it does beg the question

this was the thread where Markelby made the comment I mentioned upthread.

I'm much more uptight offline, quite neurotic. But not hard.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 5 June 2004 09:59 (twenty years ago) link

I think I'm quite gentle online, but I am fairly tough in real life. This is mostly irrelevant, as I very rarely have to be a hard man, but I can be.

I'm a lot nicer online than I am IRL. Esp. round here, I'm personable and rarely wind anyone up the wrong way (or at least, I don't go out of my way to wind people up), while if you encounter me down the pub I am likely to go off on one and make as many contriversial statements as possible just to get a rise out of people. Arguing for the sake of it, I think is the expression. I'm trying to become a little more opinionated on-line, but I'm kinda trumped round here on that score anyway, so maybe I should remain as the pleasent counter-balance.

Johnney B, Saturday, 5 June 2004 15:11 (twenty years ago) link

Haha if there's ANY ONE THING ILE is crying out for, it's another unreasonably opinionated poster who argues for the sake of arguing.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 5 June 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

As I said the other day, no-one really knows how they come across either on-line or IRL. Two posters described my on-line persona as 'scary' and that of 'an internet hardman' which was a surprise. I thought I probably came across as q.friendly and slightly boring. Both these people said I was 'very nice' in real life, whereas I'd have thought I'd be more likely to be described as rude IRL.

What do we mean by 'hard' here anyway, Mark H? Do you mean rude/ pushy/intimidating or physically tough? People who go around being intimidating are usually actually not v. tough when it comes to it, I've found. I think I'm above averagely tough in that I'm not bothered about taking a knock or two (mainly on the sports field) but I wouldn't want to fight anyone. There's always someone harder.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Saturday, 5 June 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago) link

dude, I'm no different IRL, which probably ain't such a good thing.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 5 June 2004 16:08 (twenty years ago) link

I think I said that Dr C was the only internet hardman that was actually convincing, because for some reason I reckon he'd be quite handy in a fight if you happened to get into one. This is mostly because he is a) very tall and b) able to throw darts with pinpoint accuracy at his opponents.

I can think of very few people on ILE (certainly not myself) who I reckon you'd want by your side if you were being attacked by nutters. Chris B, possibly.

I'm definately more assertive and opinionated online than IRL. i suppose i am pretty shy.
