Is ILX fatally diminished now that a lot of the more interesting ilxors such as Momus, John Darnie11e or Mark S. no longer post?

This could well be the case...

We've been through this. It's rubbish, yes.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

It's bad that N. doesn't post no more.

the bellefox, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Diminished it may be, but the final, fatal moment lies years hence, long after you have ceased to care.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

See some section of here:

Longtime ILXors - how has this board changed over time?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's fatally diminished, though I do wish then fellows mentioned above still posted here. Did Momus ever do a "farewell u fux0rz" type post, or did he just stop? (or, for that matter, is he really just busy w/other stuff at the moment?)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm still posting.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago)

This thread implies that there have only been three interesting ILXors which is just mean.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Aja, apparantly, is back.

Huk-L, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Momus briefly posted on a couple of threads the other day, so he's not gone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Yes!! (x-post to DV 'ere) Actually quite a few of then people who were here when I found this place are still posting quite regularly.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

THEY ALWAYS DO POOS IN ME GRABS FANNY THEN I COME IN

GARU G, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Momus has posted occasionally of late, here and there. Even John D posted once recently (I was hugely flattered). I desperately wish that Mark S would post as much as he used to, as that significantly ups the average intelligence, knowledge and funniness here.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I miss Nate Patrin and Ethan.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

This Garu G thing? It isn't funny.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Momus was only interesting in that he posted asshat bullshit that caused people to argue with him for hours, and in that he was a celebrity. I think any of us could take care of the former if you think it would make ILX more interesting (I'm perfectly willing to take this position), and we've got Hurlothrumbo for the latter now.

I liked John D. a lot, actually, but the only thing that made him "special" (better than other ILXors) was his celebrity status. See above.

I don't even know who Mark S. is.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I am in a bad mood today.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago)

i like the idea of hurlothrumbo as a celebrity.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago)

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

John D was more interesting than just his celebrity status: he's intelligent, sensitive, funny, and has interesting and sometimes unexpected tastes.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I wish Nabisco would post a lot again. And that Josh would return. And that Tom would post on ILE again. And Tim H.

John D was one of the most consistently intelligent and interesting people here, and I formed that opinion before I knew he made music. (xpost)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Hurlothrumbo is from the great band Oneida (who make better music than Momus or the Mountain Goats anyways).

John D was more interesting than just his celebrity status: he's intelligent, sensitive, funny, and has interesting and sometimes unexpected tastes.

You mean like most everyone else on ILX? (This was kind of my point).

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

oo i remember the time we used to have much more meta threads - that's when it was really good. NOT REALLY OF COURSE, I'm just having a laugh

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

momus is in japan/hong kong and probably having far too much fun to post with us, wait till he gets bored or poor in Berlin again.

The bird would cease and be as other birds
But that he knows in singing not to sing.
The question that he frames in all but words
Is what to make of a diminished thing.

briania (briania), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago)

n/a, John D is very well versed in a wide range of topics, some of which most ILX0rs don't know all that much about, or if they do, don't seem to be too interested in discussing, and he was always very funny and polite with it, too. That's not a very common ocurrence, even on ILX, and I don't think it's insulting to the rest of us to admit it.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Martin OTM about John D. It was months before I discovered that he was a musician, and a rather good one at that.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago)

i enjoyed reading some of momus's posts, although less and less as time went on and he seemed to reduce himself to caricature. the ILM thread on the new le tigre single is a case in point: momus shows up, makes a statement that goes against what nearly everyone had been expressing, and backs it up with a nonsensical argument which he half-heartedly supports with overly artifical dichotomies, and then just gives up and makes bad puns until he disappears.

mark s i miss, but he's off writing two books, so we have those to look forward to.

john d i miss as well. i agree with daniel, he had a protean outlook, was usually polite (always polite to me), and he had a real moral sense.

in general i miss what i felt was a more permissive attitude toward taking small things about pop culture fairly seriously. this still happens of course, and any thread might turn interesting at any moment, but suddenly i feel like i must look over my proverbial shoulder when i make a long, involved post, concerned that someone will decide to hold it up as an example of my being silly or effette or just taking things too seriously or in need of "a life." (as if those who spend their time searching for posts they can make fun of are being much more productive.)

nabisco is around, but less than before, and it's his contributions i miss most by far. and felicity, but she's gone and i respect that decision. as i do with john (though i could have done without the fanfare accompanying his exit).

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Hey, we've still got Ned, Alex in NYC, Amateurist and lots of people whose posts I enjoy. (Did ILXs decline begin when I ceased being a lurker? I'm not convinced it declines anyway, really)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

i don't know about decline, but i think it's coarsened.

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, if I had a nickel for every time some ninny declared "Immanent Death of ILX Predicted BY SCIENCE, Gratuitiously Explicit Film at 11"... I'd have...oh, about 15 cents.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Bringing the thread back on topic, lest someone accuse us yet again of proving the point of the thread ;)

I would direct doubters to the "People who believe God talks to them--What's going on?" thread. Even though it is a topic that can (and did) get heated and personal, it is also chock full of some interesting and thoughtful posts, including yours truly making an effort to contribute with something more meaty. Now, I did this mainly because the topic of conciousness, dreams, spirituality etc interests me greatly. But I'm no expert - I decided to write something long abd thought out anyway because here, we've been charged with... well, not trying hard enough.

So, bring it, ya barstools. I'm ready.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Aaron: not last I checked.

Trayce, she who rocks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

And I may have no university education, and not be terribly well read (no, really) and get laughed at for daring to admit I *actually like* Sylvia Plath but you know what?

Fuck it. Bring it. I'll 'ave yers anyway.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

*bows* why thank you Ned =)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

I wish you'd post more on ILM Anna. Likewise Alba, Toby, Porkpie, Markelby, Starry. I know there's a lot of record collector bollocks (sometimes from me!) but it would be good to get some fresh perspectives.

i'm rather late to this one and rather off-topic, but i do post quite a bit on ilm, dr c; more than on ile, anyway. on the other hand i guess i essentially live on a few threads (kompakt/general dance music/stuff that you find in the wire), so you probably don't see me. i don't find it scary, though.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:36 (twenty years ago)

I like "stuff that you find in the wire".

You like grime, Toby. That too.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:39 (twenty years ago)

i do indeed. i'd forgotten that. i like lots of other stuff too (i suspect i read most of the threads where dr c posts), i just don't tend to write much about it.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 17 September 2004 06:52 (twenty years ago)

i mean, is there any legitimate way to become old skool ILX without having been an ILX newbie at some point?

you can't become old skool - you either are or you're not. (once a n00b always a noob etc)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Yes, just pretend like you've been here a long time. Most people can't keep track anyway. People are surprised as hell when I remind them when I started posting:
"Oh, I thought you had been here much longer!" etc.
I'm just gonna stop reminding people starting now.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:43 (twenty years ago)

Drift along
Drift along
Gonna find them
Drift along
Gonna find them
Drift along

Need to make is special
Need to make it new
Looking for the action
Something more to do
Underneath the pavement
Towers in the clouds
Gotta find the action
Need it soon
Right now

Drift along

Cause I've been searching for all the people
I used to turn to and
All the people who knew the answers
Let's get the feeling again

Back in sweet suburbia
Middle of the road
Looking for the action
Everywhere I go
Need to make it special
Need to make it knew
Looking for the action
Something more to do

Drift along

Cause I've been searching for all the people
I used to turn to and
All the people who knew the answers
Let's get the feeling again

Advice For New ILXers

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Fragile seams
I opened up too quick and all my dreams
Were walking out I'd slowly
Lost my fire
With every single man a river cried

I had no sensation
Completely numb, left with no satisfaction
I thought no-one could ever get me high again
I swear
I was not looking

Oh, waited so long
I thought the real thing was a fake
I thought it was a tool to break me down
You proved me wrong again

If love were liquid it would drown me
In a placeless place would find me
In a heart shape come around me and then
Melt me slowly down
If love were human it would know me
In a lost space come and show me
Hold me and control me and then
Melt me slowly down
Like chocolate

Tastes so good
My heart's been mended who'd have
thought it would
An empty bet and still I won the cash
A man who I love and who
Loves me back

If love were liquid it would drown me
In a placeless place would find me
In a heart shape come around me and then
Melt me slowly down
If love were human it would know me
In a lost space come and show me
Hold me and control me and then
Melt me slowly down
Like chocolate

Zoom in, catch the smile
There's no doubt it's from you
And I'm addicted to it now

Just one look boy to melt me down
Just one heart here to save me now
Your candy kisses are sweet I know
Hold me tight baby don't let go
Just one look boy to melt me down
Just one heart here to save me now
Your candy kisses are sweet I know
Hold me tight baby don't let go
