Oh, a new thread, sure.

---

Not that this has a lot to do with music, but I was once at Ye Olde Green Mille in Uptown, Minneapolis, when my roommate let slip the fact that she was proud of herself for being a "lacto-ovo vegetarian."

I said, "But you're eating chicken wings right now."

She said, "Right. So I can vegetables and milk and eggs. And animals that make milk and eggs."

If I was a braver man, I would have pointed out that her definition of vegetarianism seemed to encompass omnivorism, but she was the 18-year-old girlfriend of one of my best friends, so i just drank more beer.

-- subgenius (subsubgeniu...), February 3rd, 2005.

Years later, the same dude had a different 18-year-old girlfriend. I wound up living with them, too. At one point, her dad had some sort of micro-stroke that affected his vision.

She was pretty upset about that, and understandably so. I completely empathized with her -- I had just spent a year living with my parents as my father died of lung cancer -- so I told her that if she wanted to talk about it, all she had to do was ask.

She responded, "You just don't know what it's like to have a sick parent!"

I loved that. To this day, it was probably the funniest thing anyone's ever said to me. I couldn't be upset, because it was just too crazy. I cherish those memories.

Genuine belly-laugh at the bingo/end scene:
-------
oft-used buzzwords/phrases at my shitty office:
"carry the ball" which is obviously interchangeable with "dropping the ball"
"action items"
"upward trajectory"
"emplanement" (to board a plane...really)
"empowerment"
"continuous improvement"
the e- prefix as in e-mail
and of course some conjugation of "shifting the paradigm"

I had a one man buzzword bingo session with myself that came to an abrupt halt one day when I got an email that included the sentence "all action item procedures must meet our deliverable expectations for our e-business sector in this fiscal quarter". That email alone made me complete my card. Unfortunately the boredom was catching up to me, so in my bingo winning fervor, I did a mock touchdown dance, slipped and fell on my chair leg and resultingly knocked over an adjacent cube wall. That was the end of buzzword bingo.

Jonathan Chait, who wrote the LAT piece, is the house Dean-hater at the New Republic, a nominally left-centrist, but arguably neo-con, magazine.

The pick should not be viewed primarily through the lens of ideology (and, once again, all together now, Dean has long been a centrist). It's going to be a primarily mechanical position, focused on building the party at the state and local level. Picking Dean brings along the self-acknowledged risk of gaffes, and he's going to try to keep his head down to avoid them. But message can't be ignored. And his is more outspoken.

My favorite reaction had to be the first time I spent over $100 in a record store (a monumental trip that included the first non-major label CDs I ever bought.) So my bag sets off the store alarm, and the security guard calls me over to the register. After checking to make sure I only have the CDs I paid for, he looks at me with a solemn face and says:
"Son, can I be honest with you?"
"Yes"
"You are buying too much music."

My program put on a kalaoke night, and I made a spectacle of myself, which was quite invigorating, which I felt compelled to do because otherwise I wasn't enjoying myself -- all my friends seemed interested in talking to other people, and I had to get attention somehow. Of course, they all went off paired with someone else, and all this happened in proximity to the ongoing tragicomic saga of me and my complete inability to be in the same room with my crush. So I went home and didn't do any of the things that could've cheered me up, because I had vague feelings of responsibility to schoolwork. Then I ambushed someone in my dorm with my troubles.

And today is bright and sunny and not only do I have no one to share it with, I'll be in a library falling asleep instead.

The nice thing about the west is that we're so racially tolerant of the people in our great world cities, mostly the descendants of those whose nations we invaded, ransacked for natural resources and slaves, and then demoted from an empire to a commonwealth and finally to a series of ghettoes in the outskirts of our great cities. -- Broken Hipster (brokenhipste...), March 25th, 2005 1:31 AM. (Broken Hipster) (later)

The main problems are with the XML library files used by iTunes. XML is just like HTML in that if a single character of code, like a "[greater than symbol]", is missing/corrupted then the entire file after that point becomes unreadable. Considering how often your iTunes library file is modified/updated this is bound to happen eventually.

The best way to prevent this is to periodically BACKUP your iTunes library file. Find out where it's hiding and make a dated copy that you can roll back to if your shit gets fucked up.

And backup your playlists too, as they will also go bye-bye if your library file calls it quits.
