ping pong on Wednesday, Needlework on Thursday, BOWLING on a Friday night (29th July)

Hi,

I remember talking to Ned about this and apparently I'm supposed to organise some kind of bowling for the 29th July, on the Friday night. So here it is!

Action plan
-----------
1. Decide on where this should happen.
(suggestions: finsbury park rowan's, queensway queen's bowl which also has an ice rink omg wtf, streatham megabowl hahaha just kidding no way it's south of the river)
2. Establish number of likely attendees

Once we have 1. and 2., I think somebody should phone-ahead (e.g. stevem) ASAP, just in case there are lots of people who like bowling on Friday nights (because you know, Friday nights are like.. wahyyyyeeyyyy... get pissed like! aye, let's chook a couple a booling balls doon da lynn like! aye it'll be reahl funneh) etc.

There you go.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I would say Rowans but I want to get Alang out bowling cos he said he wanted to.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

alang doesn't know where finsbury park is?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Of course he knows where it is, it's just not as desirable for people who don't live in North London. Although now that he's moved it may well be the best choice of venue.

I've never visited the Queensway one though...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

queensway one is okay - except it may well be PACKED on a Friday night and i cannot remember there being like much of a bar or anything. and the nearest pub was quite a walk away? (queensway is lots of resturants, there is like one pub on it but i think it gets pretty crowded).

i dunno what other ones are good and central.. there's trocadero, if you fancy paying £5 a game. also the trocadero is so loud and just not good in general. mmm st. reathem of course

or further out surrey quays has a nice one, or finchley, both "hollywood bowl"s, or the one in acton. don't forget lewisham, and croydon, milton keynes.. aberdeen..

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I'd go to Park Royal, though that'd be packed too on a Friday, and there'd probably be dudes with baseball bats in the carpark.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

On the Ned Redux thread Ned and i discussed going to Streatham Megabowl because he has to get back to Wimbledon to get from there to Heathrow super early in the morning. I suggested going to Kasturi in Tooting before hand for the best Indian Veg food in town.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

stretham it is then!!

onto agenda no 2.: who's in?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Streatham? Hmmm, tricky...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

oh no! we have a clash of dates!

Leigh in London

would ned and leigh like to liaise to work out the best arrangement?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I cannot see the ping pong plans in this!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

What where when?

For Thursday please to recall that MJ Hibbert is playing that night and I must perforce attend that, though nobody else is required to of course. ;-) But yes, whatever plans for Friday involve Indian food then BowlingFAP convenient to Wimbledon are welcome.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

Streatham and Wimbledon are obv v convenient for me, even though i have never bowled in my life. Streatham Megabowl - well OK, just so long as we don't have to do the FAP in "McCluski's Bar" AARGH!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! McCluski's Bar. They have the cheapest drinks on earth - 99p pints and things. We can go to Caesars afterwards for drivebys.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

The reason why it's sometimes better to go to Balham on a Friday night and wait an hour for a 315 bus: you don't have to go past Caesar's!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

leigh FAP clashage still appears to be unresolved. any updates?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

I will bowl. And fall on my arse.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

(This is also a very heartfelt thanks to Ken for organizing this when so much horribleness has happened this month. You're a really good feller, sir.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

just so long as we don't have to do the FAP in "McCluski's Bar" AARGH!

McCluski's Bar. They have the cheapest drinks on earth - 99p pints and things.

DOES NOT COMPUTE

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

Actually, there's a thing. Has anyone ever seen another "McCluski's Bar" anywhere other than in Streatham Hill? I've always assumed that it's part of some ghastly Wetherspoon's-type corporate franchise but I haven't seen them anywhere else.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

There are apparently other "McCluski's Bar" according to Google, but I've no idea whether they are the same or not, having never been in. It sounds like fun, though (this is sarcasm).

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

Ah I see, it's part of the "Megabowl Family Entertainment Centre" deal. There are other "McCluski's Bars" in Dudley and Exeter, which makes a strange, if depressing, kind of sense.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Is it just me, or is the phrase, "Megabowl Family Entertainment Centre" depressing in its own curious way?

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

The nearest bowling alley to Wimbledon is probably Charrington Bowl in Tolworth, where I spent many happy childhood afternoons. But I can't see ANYONE trekking out to Tolworth. How about Queensway? Also, remember to BOOK IN ADVANCE on a Friday night.

But, Leigh DID get there first with FAPpage that night. So perhaps we should ask her what she'd like to do, and whether we can combine the two?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i think tolworth is handy for dr c but a bit out of the way for everyone else.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

A FAP?

In Streatham?

On my birthday?

THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING!

(p.s. if we're reaaaally concerned about Wimbledonian convenience then the Megabowl at PURLEY WAY is right by Ampere Way tram-line, and Purley Way is quite good for making Streatham seem like a slightly lesser variety of hell)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

thanks mark for reiterating many of the points made before, just to focus on the agenda, then

1. how does streatham sound for everyone then? still central enough for all and is easy to get to wimbledon?

2. when we have a head count we really should PHONE AHEAD

3. i've just mentioned the bowling on the leigh thread so see what she thinks. don't know if bowling is her cup of tea...

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

and aw.. it's WBS's birthday already. (i still remember the last one)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

I've replied on my thread. I draw a huge blank on south london i'm afraid. What about Namco world at county hall, it's £3 a game and has dodgems and DDR too!

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh and we've still not made any concrete plans for the rest of the weekend so the FAP could be shifted to Saturday if that would be easier.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

oooh that might be a plan actually - then we'll have a double whammy of events friday and saturday!

But only if it's not too inconvenient for you though - I feel bad for hijacking your friday plans!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

NB it is Rob's birthday on the Saturday. I don't imagine he wants to celebrate it much now, but anyway.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

As i said i hadn't made any, was a spur of the moment to come down at such short notice in the first place. Will have to speak to Claire about the bowling but am happy to move the FAP to Saturday.

We've talked about going for sushi in soho (can't remember the name of the restaurant but it was very reasonable and round the corner from Ed's diner on Old Compton Street) but that's it so far.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

"NB it is Rob's birthday on the Saturday. I don't imagine he wants to celebrate it much now, but anyway. "

His actual birthday is on the Thursday I think (original plans were for the big do on Saturday night). He has mentioned that he would like still like to have a birthday FAP, but obviously actual plans are yet to be organised.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Have checked with Claire and she's fine with going bowling. Streatham is probably a bit far South for us though. We'll be coming from Bloomsbury. Where's queensway? Is that West London?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh sorry marianna, my mental database must be faulty... I will try to come to any birthday thing anyway.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

I think we might give bowling a miss on the Friday night and shift the FAP to Saturday. Having thought about it, i don't think i'll be up to bowling after 4 hours on the train.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 22 July 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

A pity as this sounds like I must miss Leigh! Ah well, another time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

aw.. hope to see you on Saturday leigh.

so, stevem would you like to do the honours and phoneahead? so i guess it's streathem then>

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

ned are we still up for lunch? i am not sure abt bowling - or anything else - quite so far south of the UTMOST SOUTHERN BOUNDARIES OF ACTUAL REAL LONDON (=old street) but i am up for sit-down faps in my own shoes, and such

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

come to the meal beforehand?

Ed (dali), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

can i wear my own shoes?

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

only if they're pink high heels

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Don't know if I will make Streatham so will leave phoning ahead to someone else.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

we'll be in Porto eating baby goats and pigs unfortunately (I say unfortunately .....)

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

phone ahead and tell em yr not coming stevem!

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

i'm vaguely up for bowling on friday night, but probably not in stretham, so guess next time? (if it happens at rowans or even queensway, i'd find it much more likely). am just so shattered after dealing with my mom for a week and a half that i can only imagine doing very easy things for the next week...

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 24 July 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Sounds v. understandable, Colette!

Mark, right now lunch on Friday is totally open for whatever might be convenient for you, so just e-mail...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 July 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

Would have to be Tooting dinner for me in that case. Don't really fancy legging it all the way up to Q/way afterwards, but I don't bowl so would be content with t'dinner.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

Are we still talking about Friday night? I'd like Queensway bowling, personally. I can't do Saturday.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

it is friday yes. so how about this convoluted thing then? i like food and i like bowling and i like travelling (of course i haven't checked the map to see how far tooting is from queensway yet.. hang on)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

best to go to bayswater, take the central to tott ct rd & then northern to tooting broadway, provided there are no further oval/stockwell bombing shenanigans.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

All sounds good to me. Stevie Chick has promised to check on this thread when he is back from Crete.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

i haven't bowled for like ages.. hope i'm still devastatingly good

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

okay, guys, it's tuesday afternoon. time to make a decision.

bowling on friday, at queensway, yeah, about 20:30? to give ample time for eating and then the travelling down??? it's going ahead unless more than 2 people object before close of business today.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

I object! Just for fun, like.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I'll be making dinner in Tooting now. Very sorry, but I'm likely to be working late, and the travel time means I won't be back down South in time to get any dinner.

Sorry I won't be able to give you a send-off Ned, but have a good time.

It Is What A Man Does Which Demeans Him, Not What Is Done To Him (kate), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Bowling from 21:00 to allow more time for eating?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

ned am i havin lunch w.you some day this week?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

me or kate?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

sorry misread that as 'ned and I'

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

21:00 is fine with me.. what time do you finish kate? maybe time for going to queensway to catch a drink?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I just don't think it will be possible.

It Is What A Man Does Which Demeans Him, Not What Is Done To Him (kate), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

ah well. next time.... (probably non bowling)

i'm guessing i'm on the phoneahead duties then?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Mark -- yes, lunch, Friday! Refer to other thread for details.

Ken -- yes you are, you lucky man.

I would really enjoy it if as many people could show up as possible! Cause I am selfish.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

dudes! i have a long-booked bbq on friday night with old friends of the family, DOH but i will be abt thurs i hope

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

You party animal! Oh well, so long as I can get to and from the station okay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

can we have an indication of who is in for dinner? (We could move that as well, but I do like kastoori)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Count me in for dinner, Ed (Kastoori is GREbT!).

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

hey kids - i've just called.. queensway sounds pretty expensive (apparently £5.50 for one game wtf although maybe this includes the shoe hire?? + 4 quid overall for booking fee, or £60 for a lane for an hour), are you guys still up for this? who actually are still coming?? is it just Ned Ed Markelby and Me???

If so.. seems like the place in streatham may be a better bet yet?? (since it's easy for all of us especially if we're dinnering)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

ned! gatwick pickup and wherever dropoff both fine!! x

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Yay!

And yeah, who IS coming to this thing? I wasn't expecting everyone but it seems to have gained minimal reaction. :-/

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Anyway. So when/where should I meet you all again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

suzy is coming. Outside Tooting Bec Tube at about 7?

Ed (dali), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes I was just about to say although the total nitemare of having to loiter in bowling alleys while my dad and his stupid friends did their league ensures I DO NOT DO BOWLING, I definitely am up for Kastoori.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

You can observe bowling from the sidelines and laugh, surely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

no agreement appears to have yet been reached re. location of bowling - streatham or queensway?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

I tried the laughing from sidelines thing back in the spring and it was meh. Also I whine and make Ed get nachos with Satan Cheese on them, which is no good.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

Is Satan Cheese better than Xtreme Cheddar?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Hi guys,

Re: Bowling i think it should now happen in streatham just because it's so much closer to tooting and also convenient it seems for all involved (as the queensway'ers can't make it anyway)!

I haven't done any bookings (as they require full payment at booking! and since we don't know exact numbers who will be coming we can't really do that), so i think we should finish dinner and just head down and see.

So shall the non-food bowlers (if there are any) try and get to the megabowl for around 8:30-9 perhaps?) i'll txt all the folks who said they may be interested anyway. this should co-incide nicely then with the food folks.

yeah?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Sounds good to me! Tooting Bec at 7 pm I can do...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

You'll enjoy the bus ride from Tooting to Streatham - 57 or 333. Gets very lively of a Friday night...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

although I was very shocked to read in the Standard yesterday that the Kebab & Hamburger Bar place which has been in T/Broadway for aeons was raided by police re. the bombings. I've even been in there once or twice. Bloody hell!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

yeah i can meet at the tooting bec tube at 7pm i might even break the tube fast and take the NORTHERN LINE from work. as bus down to tooting sounds like self-abuse.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 July 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

although I was very shocked to read in the Standard yesterday that the Kebab & Hamburger Bar place which has been in T/Broadway for aeons was raided by police re. the bombings. I've even been in there once or twice. Bloody hell!

apparently they looked into their lamb stew and found rice in.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 July 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

that would be buses down to tooting as since they split the 133/333 routes there is no way of doing north of the river to SW17 in one go except via Putney Bridge.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 July 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

oh yes, the buses. i hadn't even checked how many it'd take actually. from warren street. i expect 3.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 July 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

you could do it in two - 88 to clapham common, then 155 to tooting.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 July 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

ooh sweet. that doesn't sound too painful actually. mmmm will have to think abut this one when i get out of work (it'll depend how early/late i get out of work methinks..)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 July 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

actually a single to tooting bec may be a good idea (maybe it's time i get an oyster card too.) this way if i'm going to end up taking more tube journeys today i can take advantage of the price capping thingie.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I will be at this in spirit, but sadly cannot afford a late night tonight :( Have a drink for me, folks.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

aw see you soon tissssp!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

t'was fun.

curry was fantastic. ned marcello and suzy were very educational in various music matters! and we all ate exciting unknown "mountain vegetables".

and the bowling was awesome fun. everyone was a winner in bowling - ned won on style, ed had the fastest bowl of the game (19.7 mph i think!!) mark and i both won a game

and then there is SGS WHO WON A V.I.P. TICKET, AND A KISS, FROM THE DJ MAN. cor!!

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 30 July 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

The dj being the hybrid of mike skinner and 'comic book guy' from the simpsons.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 30 July 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

thus perfect

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 30 July 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

well done sgs!!
