HONEY CRISP is ruling my world right now. They're a bit expensive but also juicy and incredibly flavorful. I didn't realize I could LOVE apples like i do the Honey Crisp.

http://www.applesource.com/honey_crisp.gif

Honey Crisp is the new sensation in the apple world, a large, sweet apple with crisp "to-die-for" texture! Believed to be an offspring of Macoun and Honey Gold, Honey Crisp was introduced in 1991 by the University of Minnesota breeders at Excelsior, MN. Both its parents were noted for having excellent flavor, moderate sized fruit, and "ok" texture. Honey Crisp's flavor is perhaps not as dramatic as Macoun at its peak, but is first rate. The Kicker in Honey Crisp is its crisp texture -- no other apple matches its crispness.

granny smith all the way. crisp-tart burst of flavor!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

For eating, the sour ones and NEVER Delicious. For pies, I'm in a quandry: I can't get Ida Reds or Northern Spies in NYC -- what else works? A few Macs are good but too wet in bulk, I need a drier apple that doesn't bake down to mush.

Laurel, Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

EMPIRES mmmmmm. braeburns too.

i always get sucked in by the rustic surliness of russets but they're never as delicious as ugly fruit ought to be.

braeburns YES

pippin, granny smith, jonathan, pink lady

Macintosh apples seem to be popular on the East Coast. I bought a couple today. I'll report back later.

Gala apples have a delicate flavor but can easily become too mushy.

The sugar in Fuji apples can get out of control.

youn, Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

A lot of the flavor has been bred out of apples to get a better shipping product. Apples are just generically sweet now, not very appley. Sometimes they taste a lot like generic white seedless grapes to me.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Up until a couple weeks ago I never bothered with fruit at all, now I try to have an apple every afternoon, but I've only tried Red Delicious. How do true apple connaisseurs rate this variety?

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

ok i bought some honeycrisps. lets see how this goes.

huell howser (chaki), Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

macoun, fuji. Macouns have to be fresh. Fujis, like Braeburns and Galas, store forever without going mushy, but they do lose quality. A fresh Fuji is so winey and good.
MacIntosh practically have to be eaten off the tree, they turn to brown mush so quickly.
Macoun must be a more durable offspring.
Golden Delicious off the tree are amazing. One day later it's all lost.

I was at a farmer's market in Sebastopol one weekend when Gravensteins happened to be in season. So fragile they don't even leave Sonoma County, from what they tell me. Yum yum.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

The honey crisp = golden delicious + godly texture, increased juiciness.

I have no idea what the names of apples are, but I like the soft, sweet ones that sometimes come out half red, half yellowy-green, like the poison apple in Snow White. They are tasty and exciting.

That could be either of the Macs.
Anyone seen any Winesaps lately?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

Maria, you are exactly right!! I ALWAYS think of the poison apple when I see those short, fat country apples with the green + red sides! I dislike Delicious, both Red and Yellow, for their horrible mealy insipid sweetness, yes, but also for their aristocratic pulled-up figures. Give me an apple with its chin around its waist, please.

I used to clean house for a woman who kept a big wooden bowl full of shellacked-looking red delicious apples on a side-table. No one ever ate one. She kept them around until they smelled like compost, then threw them out and bought new.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

I used to be all about the Granny Smith - the tarter the better (can someone reccomend some even tarter apples? like cooking apples?) - but now I've also fallen under the sway of the Pink Lady.

I like my apples firm. That's what I dislike about the Golden Delicious - it's flesh is too slimey/melty.

Gala, Braeburn, and small Pink Ladies. Everyone raves about Cox's for apple sauce in the UK, but I found the bubbly, thin consistency weird. Give me some lumps, please.

i just discovered courtland apples whilst on a picking spree in indiana. why hadn't i heard of these before?!?

from here:
The Courtland Apple was developed at the New York Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva in 1898. It is related to the MacIntosh and is sweeter with juicy, snow white flesh. It is a large apple with a flush of crimson against a pale yellow background sprinkled with short, dark red stripes and gray-green dots. Courtlands are excellent for eating out of hand, salads, sauce, pies and baking.

"juicy, snow white flesh" indeed!

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Monday, 3 October 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I used to love Granny Smiths, but the last few times I've tried them they're been dense and hard and not very juicy.
One of my big apple peeves is the way the apples in store-bought apple pie are often crunchy. Ick. If I want crunchy apples I eat 'em raw.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 3 October 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Sorry jaymc! I wanted an excuse to talk about honey crisps and it seemed like a better idea than just making a thread about honey crisps.

What I said about this subject almost two years ago:

prefer Fuji and Pink Lady. When I was little, the only kind of apple I'd eat was Red Delicious, so if I felt nostalgic I'd get that.

Oh yeah, and I'm a PC kinda girl.

-- Many Coloured Halo (deethe_downspamdown_lurke...), October 25th, 2003 8:27 PM.

Oh, and I found out that there's a store here in town that sells amazing Golden Delicious apples. The peels are still soft (which is why Mom prefers them -- she says every other apple out there has peels that hurt her mouth), but they're also very crisp, and juicy too. And yes, I'm all about the sweetness. Granny Smiths are perfect for baking and nothing more in my world.

Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Sunday, 18 September 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

Commercially, apples can be stored for some months in controlled-atmosphere chambers to delay ethylene-induced onset of ripening. The apples are commonly stored in chambers with higher concentrations of carbon dioxide with high air filtration. This prevents ethylene concentrations from rising to higher amounts and preventing ripening from moving too quickly. Ripening continues when the fruit is removed.[35] For home storage, most varieties of apple can be held for approximately two weeks when kept at the coolest part of the refrigerator (i.e. below 5 °C). Some types, including the Granny Smith and Fuji, can be stored up to a year without significant degrade.[36][37]

they are very well named imho

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Monday, 24 October 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

The parentage of modern apple varieties is often obscure because they are the result of lengthy breeding programmes with cross after cross, although the original parentage is generally known - often Golden Delicious or one of its offspring. However in the case of Honeycrisp the original parentage posted by the developers at the University of Minnesota appears to have been wrong !
