I think that it might just be working at Guitar Center during Christmas time.

For me, at least. No disrespect to any Guitar Center people out there.

hell might be my particular department at this law firm, where people do data entry and must record their time to the nearest tenth of an hour. yes, 6 minutes. no internet playing for them. it's the most soulless, repetitive, empty thing i can imagine just now.

You know, this whole idea that people need to personalize hell really distracts from the fact that the traditional vision of hell is quite bad enough. Yes, thanks God, I would like to be on fire for all eternity. Could you throw in some demons with tridents, a few many-headed monsters, some foaming dogs, random beasts and, uh, well, you get the idea. Thanks again, God!

whoa. I meant no ofense intended.

I don't really know much about ethan … so it's hard for me to intuit his sarcasm. especially when in the course of a long thread his comments bounce back and forth from sarcasm to sincerity.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

You are sitting in a cinema surrounded by everybody you've ever known. The movie is your life: every last second of it. Every dirty little habit, every unkind word you've ever said about somebody behind their back, every meanness, misdeed or hypocrisy you've ever committed. Including your thoughts, broadcast audibly on the soundtrack. You try to comfort yourself with the thought that we all have these private shames, that each person's life-movie will amount to the same, so that we cancel each other out. But they don't. Every other person's life-story in that cinema is exemplary. Then your own film starts again, and you sit there in the dark, feeling all the eyes on you, feeling the silent waves of loathing beat against you.

This process repeats forever.

Patchouli Clark (noodle vague), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Me and Mrs Vague were talking about the cinema screen in hell one day, it turned out that for years we'd both had this similar nightmarish idea of being completely exposed to everybody you knew. It's usually just a pang of guilt we get whenever bitching about somebody behind their back: "oh no that's going to go on the cinema screen in hell!"

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 November 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

I've been to hell. I attended a company party at the Marriot with 300 business consultants, where I was made to partake in a mercilessly bastardised rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas. It was the 12 Days of the Category Management Cycle. Someone even suggested a Category Management Cycle rap. That would have been less excruciating, given the iterative nature of the 12 Days song, with each weaker-than-piss office-related in-joke repeated again and again, verse after verse, unfailingly followed by much guffawing and knee-slapping by the greasy, prick-faced assholes for whom I had compliantly debased myself.

I wanted to catch fire and die.
