I still have some of an HHS Christmas concert (from my senior year) on a videotape. Priceless. (Of course back then almost everything but the plays were free...)

Dan, can you help me set up a website dedicated to streaming video of HHS theatrical and musical productions? Damn, my interest is already fading.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

Bookstore: there might be one there now (although Just Thinking... Bookstore closed). When I was a kid I went to Westview Mall to spend my allowance on Sweet Dreams romances at the Bookshelf... then that closed and there wasn't a bookstore until after I left for college. (And then there was the year the public library burnt down...)

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

Hi, this thread is my hometown's county seat.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

Fire: Hastings Library, Dakota County, Minnesota—June 1993. A devastating blaze, believed to have been caused by a faulty computer surge protector, destroyed about 80 percent of the library’s holdings. The fire had probably smoldered undetected for several hours before temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees blew out floor-to-ceiling windows, melted glass light fixtures and telephones, and sent flames up the side of the building. Besides the effects of the tremendous heat, the collection also sustained extremely heavy soot, smoke, and water damage. Fortunately, valuable archival material that belonged to the Hastings Historical Society and was being stored in the basement was spared. Constructed in 1964, the building was not equipped with a sprinkler system or fire alarm, either of which might have prevented the extensive damage.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

My VP/GM just moved his family to Hastings from Chicago. His kids are already complaining about how boring their lives are. He asked what there is for them to do.

I replied, "Get drunk in a corn field."

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ironically, part of the reason they were planning to build a new library at the time was that the collection was too big for that little building to handle anymore. (Also have to say that I was fond of the old library because it was my first job where I was not employed by my father!)

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

Fluffy Bear, suggest "join theater department for many wacky adventures." (okay, sometimes the cornfields and booze were involved, that is true...)

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

You people.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

Until recently, a practicing witch owned a bookstore on 2nd street.

Which still looks remarkably like this:
http://cgee.hamline.edu/rivers/gfx/Postcards/ThenandNow/2St_post.jpg

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Really?

I met a woman at my daughter's ECFE class who claims to be a massage therapist working in Hastings. Again, somewhere downtown, I think. I found this mind-boggling. (I guess Second Street is more exciting than it used to be?)

I did enjoy Professor Java's, but my "book club" stopped meeting there because they kept changing closing times.

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

Sara, the aforementioned witch is a mutual aquaintance of ours.

Dude, my nephew used to hang out at PJ's.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

They call the store Hastings because it has Tings. I'm going back to work there for the summer. Minnesota, so much to answer for.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

Okaaaaaaaay. I know more than one witch? Personally? (I'm sure the witch I know doesn't own a bookstore in Hastings.)

Your nephew?! (Okay - so... your brother's son? I don't remember you having a sister...)

Professor Java's = very yummy chai shakes. I heard they were closing but kind of lost track of that. (I could ask my writer friend. She moved from Boston to Hastings. But she was originally from Cannon Falls, so that almost makes sense.)

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

HI DERE WORK HAS SLOWED DOWN

VP/GM's kids could also go BOWLING!

Also you guys know that B3rt Casperson is an art teacher at the high school now, right? (FB maybe we've had this conversation before? Oh we totally have, at the BIERSTUBE!)

(xpost: Jeffy has a sister! She's a good bit older than us.)

Dan (BIERSTUBE!) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

...Bierstube. Is this like Burgerpipe?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

The Bowling alley closed down.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

Bowling... Bierstube... LOL... (I had forgotten that Hastings was the County seat. What does that say about Dakota County?)

Dan, thanks for explaining about FB/Jeffy's sister. I either never knew that or it was randomly deleted from my memory.

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

The corn field shut down, too. Now, kids must drink in E Space.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

...Bierstube. Is this like Burgerpipe?

Oh no, it's much better.

Dan (OMG ROAD TRIP) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Sara, many moons ago, I worked with a friend of yours at Intek (plastics extrusion factory). Her husband owned the bookstore, if I remember correctly.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

OKAY CAN WE PLZ FOCUS ON THE FACT THAT THERE ARE FOUR OTHER BIERSTUBES IN THE TWIN CITIES AREA????????

Dan (New Life Goal) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

(Blankly) There are?

(Sidenote: I think this is why my parents are still in the booze business. It sells regardless of the economy.)

FB - you don't mean @lsb@th, do you? (Mind boggling... although that would make some sense.)

So much about you is clearer now, Dan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

I remember Mr. Pauletti (P.E. teacher who worked at House of Wines until he died) mentioned that the Bierstube had an excellent asparagus plate. (If only I knew how to xpost with the "is asparagus spicy?" thread).

So, next time I visit my parents I know where to ditch out on them (and leave the kids behind...).

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

Sara, so rude. ARE YOU NOT A LOVING DAUGHTER/MOM?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

LOL on driving to those houses out in... well, we used to call it "BFE."

This is all cracking me up.

FB - got it.

Am I a loving daughter/mom? Ummmmmmm... sometimes?

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Hehehe, I tease. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Dan, I like how the 'Stube is becoming a defining characteristic of your personality, now that you live in Boston.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I am cracking my ass up at this thread. All Minnesota moms are priceless FWIW. Also my dad used to live in the hellhole that is Eagan, and I used to have to go there from my comparative urban setting in St Louis Park so I must say I feel your pain.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Suzy! Dude, Eagan is SO NOT HASTINGS. St. Louis park is at least biking distance from civilization.

By the time I reached my thirties, my brain had been strip mined by a combination of drugs, alcohol and the chemical solvents used at the refinishing company where I worked... Still, there were moments when, against all reason, I thought I might b agenius. These moments were provoked not by any particular accomplishment but by cocaine and crystal methamphetamine — drugs that allow you to lean over a mirror with a straw up your nose, suck up an entire week's paycheck, and think, "God, I'm smart."

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Good catch, John.

Jesus on a stick

Good times, but I think my crowning achievement was moving from Jesus on a Stick to Jesus in a Can, to Easy Jesus, to Squeezy Jesus. Our crude drawings were a sight to see. It's a shame we don't have pictures, or a chunk of the set, for history's sake.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

I just realized that Zardoz and Bongwater are the last two movies I recommended to Netflix friends. K4te queued both of them back to back. I should feel guilty. But I love Zardoz, and 15-20 minutes of Bongwater are not to be denied!

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

FB, get out some paper and start re-creating your art. (I want to see Squeezy Jesus, please).

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

SQUEEZY JESUS! That was brilliant! Hahahahaha

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the original Jesus on a Stick was the most elegant of the bunch, because, well, Jesus already comes on a stick. Just batter submerge in oil (345- 375°F) for 3 minutes.

FB, at least one might be able to move in those pants.

I have serious questions about that guy's skin care routine, though.

Movies. You kids and your time to watch movies. I don't even recognize those titles! (Even if I did, though, I feel sure they wouldn't be appropriate if the kids were up...)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 16 June 2006 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

FB, at least one might be able to move in those pants.

Now I imagine him dancing like Spiderman.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 June 2006 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

CLASSY

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Dan's reaction to the photos on that site:

"Cute."
"CUTE!"
"Um, maybe not so cute."
"No, I was right, cute."
"WTF IS THAT GODAWFUL THING"
"Oh Britney, is Kevin really that stressful?"
"BREAST FEST????? LOL LOL LOL LOL"

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

Turn ons: Self confidence, honesty, sense of humor, great smile, athletic, vivid imagination, Harleys, loud trucks, prime rib, pineapple, hot baths, good music, I'm a sucker for beautiful women, and oh, I like 'em TALL!!!

Turn offs: Bad breath, jealousy, DRUGS, rush hour trafic, mushrooms and garlic.

What happens if you give her a pineapple ring with a clove of garlic in the middle?

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Hobbies: I love hot weather ... (not sure why I live in MN?) Boating and sitting on the beach, riding Harleys, hanging out with family and friends, dancing, shopping, watching Netflix (winter time), cooking, some people would say, "talking on the phone", making candles, surfing the web, laughing, but most of all ... spending time with my two buddies!!

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

I do.....?

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just pointing out the internal contradictions in Angies profile. You can't have your straight-edge bi-curiosity and eat it too.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

Yuck. I'm never going to be hungry again now. (Possibly this is also the fault of the garlic and pineapple thing Dan mentioned. Although actually, I toss both of those things on noodles whenever I visit Khan's, so I'm not sure what my problem is.)

FB, I get what you are saying, but I'm not sure people make as much sense as you want them to, either. I'm just sayin'.

Who wants who to make sense?

I'm soooooooooo confused......

(But to answer your question, maybe not me. I'd be the first person to have to admit not making sense all the time. It just seemed like you were disturbed by... I don't want to say Angie's inner conflict, because really, that seems really, really wrong somehow.)

That Satin/Satan cat is MINE!

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

does this mark the first time something from the KQRS website has been posted on ILX?

I don't think it's possible to understand what KQ means in MN unless you are from here.

fuck I hate Tom Barnard so much.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still mourning the loss of KJ104, these zillions of years later. Since then radio has been kind of hit or miss for me. KQ makes me think of my little sister. (Every time I put a c.d. on in high school, she would ask me, "when are we going to listen to something normal?")

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

although recently, they seemed to have expanded their playlist a bit. i heard white wedding back to back with obla de obla da by the beatles yesterday on the way to work.

Favorite KQ Classics:

"Fantasy" by Aldo Nova
"Jane" by Jefferson Starship (especially cuz they are basically the same song)
"Sailing Away" - Styx
"Give Me Some Water" - Eddie Money (cuz I shot a man on the mexican booordah!)
"Turn It On Again" - Genesis

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 16 June 2006 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

also barnard's become more of an evil toady in the last 5-10 yrs i think...or maybe i'm just noticing more now.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 16 June 2006 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

...and i do admire the way they resolutely refuse to update their logo from that awesomely cheezy late 70s bubble font!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 16 June 2006 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

Who can forget Tak, Tom Barnard's wacky asian character. OTM, Matt. How to explain KQ?

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Friday, 16 June 2006 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

oh god i forgot about that...also Terry Trane, fucking airhead.

I remember older guys in my school having KQ shirts when I was in elementary (I was from Blue Earth so we couldn't even get KQ down there...I listened to the mini-me KQ from Mankato KXLP, which is actually better! You'd hear shit like UFO and Dio-era sabbath in between the classic rock) and thinking they were soooooo cool

the KQ morning show was so powerful that Stern left Mpls radio w/his tail betwixt his legs...

Obla de obla da... OMG, I am having the craziest flashback ever to a play so long ago that I don't even remember the name of it. It was one of the one-act comedies they put on when I was a freshman. I must have been doing set construction and running crew. All I remember is that I sat in the hall with T0dd O. and 3lsb3th B. listening to that song... and then I had to go throw up. Ms. 0 sent me home (although she didn't show any mercy for the stage manager, L4rry, when he passed out backstage closing night). Wow.

Ten bucks says KQ is what my Dad listens to in the morning when he drives off to Red Wing to sell booze. I can't claim any other insight into that station or anything else. But the t-shirts I do remember.

This was getting a little long, so I hope you don't mind if I move this thread to:

While My Hastings Gently Weeps vs. Hastings Is A Warm Gun, part 2: The Salad Days of Terror

(inspired, in part, by Sara's Obla de obla da reference)
