marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

OMG OMG! This is perfect - in-laws will have gone back to States, Pam will be a mere, uh, 34wks pregnant. We must meet up - perhaps I can commandeer you pre-pub somewhere so you can meet Ava?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

I think you should come to Glasgow. Are you coming to Glasgow?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

yup we are coming to glasgow ailsa from sept 28 - oct 3.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

Cor! I will be (a mere) 28 weeks pregnant and it will be freshers week aka hell at work so getting to London could be tricky but dammit I will try.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

FAP at the LONDON PUB?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

hush you

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

is that the really grodey place you were talking about before ken?

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Wimpy

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

(pardon me) Michael Jones, does Pam happen to teach at a university?

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

ROCKTOBER more like!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

(Yes, I will continue to make that joke every year)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

Wimpy FAP?

What happened to Bluewater FAP? or whatever its called...

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

rather than eat a juicy burger, im quite keen on the idea of drinking alcohol. i havent had any in like, months! TIME TO GUZZLE.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

5th is my birthday so I might be around that weekend hopefully!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Where are you both staying? I think we might need to pick 1x big pub for this Booze Odyssey. Particularly if it occurs on Friday (as would be sensible).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Bluewater FAP is a tremendous(ly bizarre) idea.

Michael Jones, does Pam happen to teach at a university?

She was deputy headmistress of the School of Hard Knocks and Tough Surprises for a while in the '80s. But, er, no. She doesn't have the same surname as me, if that's what triggered your question.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

AWESOME.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

mandee is staying somewhere in russell sq. i think - hence LONDON PUB. :D (haha yeah it's the grody place!!)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Nuts, I'm going to be in Germany when you're in Scotland :(

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

xposts--yeah sorry, long shot...one of my supervisors happens to have the same name and is just about that pregnant, sounds like..carry on as before

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

Come to SOAS. It will be full of new freshers and driving me mad.

So: Don't come to SOAS...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

Freshers pay your wages, you ungrateful wretch.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Some of my favourite people are SOAS alumni, so I'd like to go and help drive Pete mad.

As for the Wright Sisters, they know they got me, got me.

Badrock Example (Barima), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

sign me up, count me in, etcetc

CLEARLY, we need to just hire bloomsbury bowling lanes out for the evening, ken, make it so pls.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

me and kex are staying at THE GENERATOR HOSTEL WHICH IS SUPER FUTURISTIC

it is indeed in russell square

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

if it was truly futuristic surely it would be called the GENER-8-X0R hostel ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit you're right - hey maybe it's time for a POPTIMISM @ bloomsburybowlin' ;))

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Mandee I am confused - when are you staying in Russell Square?

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

Russell Square is 5mins from my office and right in the middle of ILX0R critical mass. We could potentially have some sort of clever lunch meet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

sometime that isn't not oct 3-8, one would assume, as they'll be in london then, and london isn't in russel square.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

NO, NO, THE EEZOHAD!!!!

Goldene Schnitt (kate), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

Mark, I just e-mailed you

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

haha dude i have spent a night at teh generator. it's pretty spartan but it's also pretty "rockin"!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

I would be up for a Critical Mass lunch meet, although I do not know THESE PEOPLE that you all seem to know.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

ken, pete has been talking about that for ages, and clearly it would be Best Thing Ever, but they do seem to put a lot of indieschmindie bands on...

pj, you'll like them :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

We're an indie schmindie band. I bet we could get a gig there... and then steal it, bring POPTIMISM DJ's and make a whole night of it.

Wait, hang on...

Goldene Schnitt (kate), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

don't the DJing folks select the bands then?

red bull dozers are indie. and if The Holloways can get a gig there...

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

who are THESE PEOPLE?

wait so do you mean to say there's a bowling alley that has gigs sometimes? radical!

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

I could very well make this, dependent on CIRCUMSTANCES

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

YOU AND YOUR SISTER, apparently.

The Bowling Alley gigs are not the Tarantino-tastic experience you would expect, because all you can hear is skittles being felled and people squealing their delight. However, I am sure the RED BULLDOZERS will bludgeon them into submission with their high octane ROCK.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

The Clientele gig there was OK but yeh it was far too stuffy in there as that was a v hot day and they had no decent air con.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

Bumpity-bump.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for saving me michael

PJ i cant believe you dont know ME. i know who YOU are! kinda!

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Keep on bumpin'...

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 2 September 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

For some reason I was worrying that I was away on these dates, but my mind was obviously playing tricks on me, which is fantastic news! (in that I'll definitely be out to see you, not that I'm losing my mind, obv)

Vicky (Vicky), Saturday, 2 September 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

I can't wait to meet you all! I'll put on my best duds.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Saturday, 2 September 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Hurray! I'll be in Glasgow then!

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 2 September 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

This bowling alley thing is a dreadful idea. I want the gigs over there, the clubs over there, and the bowling over there, with no overlap between the three. Preserve the purity of the fun.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 3 September 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

a video of me eating sushi would probably just be...gross. unlike mandee, I prefer eating it and NOT WATCHING.

I need to write all these restaurants down before we leave tonight. Thanks for all the suggestions!

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Kulu Kulu is just round the corner from my office! I haven't eaten there yet though. We usually go to the Thai buffet across the road cos it's cheap.

I might be able to go to this Poptimism.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, you work right opposite the Spiritual Home Of London ILX then.

(That's the Glasshouse Stores on Brewer Street, obviously)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

Not really opposite it, but yeah, pretty close. I've only been there a couple of times, we usually go to the Crown or the Glassblower for our lunchtime boozing.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

Spiritual home of ilx and home of rubbish beer

Ed (dali), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

They had Old Brewery and Alpine yesterday, seemed to go down a treat.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

has anyone actually been there this year? (xpost nevermind)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

Also Russell Brand behind the bar!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

Beer is Sam Smiths, QED it is rubbish.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

i was there on Sunday with marianna lcl.

i don't think it's the spiritual home of ilx though.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

beer is £1.95 a pint QED it rules ok.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

It is, due to having hosted more FAPs than any other pub, by my reckoning.

I was in there the night before Cross Central, I think. And also the night before Trig Brother. It is exactly the same as it always was.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

It's gone up! Oh no! It used to be £1.65 a pint, didn't it?

We Are The Village Green Psychiatric Society (kate), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

(And I would *much* rather drink cheap Sam Smiths bitter than nasty overpriced John Smiths like last night.)

We Are The Village Green Psychiatric Society (kate), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

are they brothers, do you think?

it has gone up yes. it may actually be £1.98 actually these days. "he head" on holloway road used to do £1.40 pints, but no longer as it is now "the old king's head" and plays rock music and got rid of the pool table :/

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

We'll raise a glass in your honour, Ed.

It's not two quid yet, four pints and a blackcurrant was under 8.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

OB is still hovering around £1.68, so-called alpine lager (which i believe is what ken is refering to) has always been closer to £2.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

(I have text message confirmation that Les Soeurs Wr***t have landed in the UK. Oh yes).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

yeah!! we are in glasgow!

by the way i wouldnt mind going to the glasshouse stores!

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Friday, 29 September 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure that can be arranged...

By the way, email me about meeting us Holborn/Bloomsbury lot for lunch when you get into London.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 September 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

(seconded)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 29 September 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Hell, even I can do that

Ed (dali), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

hey man! lunch, totally! i know me and kell are getting lunch with steady mike one day (havent decided when), so besides that day any will do. maybe friday or wednesday...?

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Sunday, 1 October 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

Wednesday totally. I doubt any of us will be in much of a state on Friday.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

(Mand, will talk to Pam about bringing Ava into town and text you...we could Zone it, though they're a bit short of highchairs in there).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

are they brothers, do you think?

John Smith and Samuel Smith WERE actually brothers, or so I've heard. They shared a brewery until they fell out and went their separate ways. Clearly John got the money, Sam the decent pubs and better beer.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

I hope you are having a lovely time in Glasgow. Please come back some other time and ORGANISE GOING TO THE PUB PLZ!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 1 October 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

(Mand & Kell, I have a couple of spare Oystercards that maybe you could use while you're in London [left over from the rels' visit]; they'll need toppin' up but it's got to be better than filling out forms to get them [if you still have to do that] or, worse, paying cash on the bus or Tube).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 2 October 2006 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

oooh that would be good, mike. i'd feel like A PROPER LONDONER. cant wait to get to london, although im a bit puzzled at how i am going to re-pack all of my wrinkled, haggard clothes.

ive also discovered something. im not sure if i can drink anymore! im not sure if i mentioned this before, but i havent had a drink (before two nights ago) since may. i tried to get properly drunk the other night here in glasgow, had two glasses of wine, and then just couldnt continue... BOOO.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 2 October 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

solution : don't drink wine!!!

drink voddy + red bull

i had a dream i went to masala zone last night, but the curries there in my dream looked like the yummy curries that you get at the indian YMCA on warren street. which means i really needed to come on this thread to recommend the INDIAN YMCA for cheap yummy lunches.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

Mandee just to confirm - you and K are having dinner with me and Sgs on WQednesday, right? Wanna email me about where and when? Mx

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

That's right, Mark. I will send mandee on here STRAIGHT AWAY to email time & place as I don't really have any idea. Excited!

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

mark, that is correct. i just emailed you. as far as where, im clueless!

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 2 October 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Can someone email me what's going on? I am officially coming now!

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

we are going to this!

The Return Of Poptimism : October 5th 2006

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

we are OFFICIALLY IN LONDON. wow, we just saw some russian dudes doing shirtless pushups in the hallway! RADICAL.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

so? photos recap etc

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, story time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

okay: so on tuesday evening we arrived in london, got all sweaty on the tube trying to carry our bags roughly the size of golden retrievers, finally got to our hostel, saw the aforementioned sweaty russian dudes doing push ups, went to the chippy across the road and got greasy food, brown-bagged it under the moonlight at the brunswick centre in bloomsbury, went back to the hostel, read some trashy tabloids (updates: posh has had another boob job, kerry something-or-other from something is preggers, jade from big brother has a new show kind of like an apprentice rip-off, and davina from something-something show has lost all her baby weight), then went to bed. woke up early on wednesday, had a cocoa-crispies sort of cereal for breakfast courtesy of the generator hostel, then me and kell walked to oxford street and did some early morning shopping, around noon headed to holborn where at one we met matt dc, andrew farrell and carsmile for lunch. after that we went to the british museum, which was way cool except some exhibits had too much pottery, which i find boring. at 7pm met up with mark c. and sgs for din-din, ate a lot, got a little tipsy on wine, then we went to a pub wherein some dude DJs (i think the pub was called the tentacles of poseidon or something) called DJ Wheelie. he was rad and i want to steal his act. shortly after arriving barima arrived and we went somewhere where it wasn't so loud, which ended up being some pub called jack waterstone's or something, just down the street. had a laugh for an hour or so, then we all headed home on our separate ways. thursday morning, woke up slightly hungover which was alarming, repeated the same cocoa crispies extravaganza, then walked to trafalgar square, big ben, the houses of parliament, and buckingham palace - where me and kelly kind of decided we had a prince william siting, but it probably wasn't him. then headed off to soho where we met michael jones and his lovely wife and baby at masala zone for lunch. had a curry, a chat, then went off to the south bank ATTEMPTING to go to the saatchi gallery, which we learned upon arrival is GONE! it started pissing rain and blowing around and stuff, so we went to the london aquarium mostly to find shelter. took lots of pics of kelly looking DEEP IN THOUGHT while staring into the fish tanks. after that we were kind of knackered so we went back to the hostel, took an hour nap, then got ready to go to poptimism. then, walked to clerkenwell for the poptimism thing, entered the pub, chatted with some peeps, drank loads of dark rum and cokes, then DJed a bit, then danced a lot, then went to the after drinks with some peeps, then walked home on wobbly, drunk ankles. woke up early the next morning, showered at 8 to avoid the late-morning shower rush, then went back to bed until 11 or so. me and kell finally got moving around noon, attempted to go to the london dungeon (YEAH we know its crap, but employs future thespians and is slightly dorky which is just our thing), but got a bit sticker shocked at the 17 pound entry fee, so instead walked along to tower bridge, then crossed and went to the tower of london. it had started POURING again by this time which makes me totally cranky. we waited around for like an hour or so before entering the tower hoping the rain would stop, but it stopped about midway through our wandering around. ran into some truly obnoxious americans in the crown jewel exhibit, some old crows crowing about what a great queen elizabeth has been, and how them jewels are REAL JEWELS Y'ALL. around 4 went back to the hostel, attempted to take a circle line train at tower hill (DO THEY EVER SHOW UP? i remember having that problem before, 3 years ago), but finally got back to russell square. hung around the common room with the russians for a bit, then went to waitrose and got a sandwich, which i ate IN MY BUNK BED. i think me and kelly went to bed ridiculously early, like at 9pm. oh wells. on saturday we had plans to hit the pavement early to see some SITES, so we got on our way at about 10am, first stop was covent garden where i did a bit too much shopping, then we ate fish and chips at the rock and sole plaice, wandered around covent garden a bit more, then made our way over to st paul's, where we got all peaceful and shit listening to the organ player but wishing there was a CHOIR - that would really make my soul soar. then we crossed the millenium bridge with about a thousand other people, i sat on a bench while kelly looked at the globe theatre, because i had better things to do, like BASK, then we went into the tate modern and looked at some goddamn art. after that, we went back to the hostel, got gussied up, and met mark c. and sgs at waterloo, we walked to a pub nearby, had some drinks, some thai food. at around 10:30 we walked back to the station and were greeted by barima, who had been stuck on the slowest bus in the universe down in brixton. sarah and mark caught their train to barnes, and me, kell and barima went to a cuban bar wherein i had a rum and coke (like, my 10th of the night). after that, went back to hostel, went to bed. next morning, we left, went to heathrow, and got on a plane back to denver.

i could write about what we did the 4 days before this in glasgow, but.... IM LAZY RIGHT NOW and its 5:46 am.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

that pretty much sums it up! is ANYONE going to want to read that lumpy huge paragraph?

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

*around noon headed to holborn where at one we met matt dc, andrew farrell and carsmile for lunch.*

Poo faces.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

then we went to a pub wherein some dude DJs (i think the pub was called the tentacles of poseidon or something) called DJ Wheelie

It's the Pillars of Hercules, though I only know that because you're describing DJ Wheelie Bin, the future of rock and roll!

Also it was great to meet you, both times.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

:-( missed you!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

All too brief, M & K!

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

I think Mandee played that Wham album track that you liked, Marcello. Also ELO.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)
