Where to stay in Berlin

I'm most likely visiting Berlin for a weekend in January... Anyone want to recommend a section of the city to stay in, or things to do and (cheap) places to eat? What should I definitely not miss in 48 hours?

Stay in Freidrichshain (sic?) if you want to go clubbing, or Prenzlaur Berg if you want to wander around all day (both are close to Mitte for a bit of sightseeing too). Both are reasonably priced to stay in and have plenty of places to eat, drink and shop.

And I'm sure there is another really good one somewhere but the search is broken.

I have stayed in three places in Prenzlauerberg, and recommend all of them. The best is probably the Transit Loft, the second best the one I cannot remember the name of, and then the Hotel Kastianhof (or something like that) on Kastanienallee.

any opinion on the area hostels? We were thinking about splitting the trip between hostel/hotel to save some cash. Was wondering if there's one that's known to be a little quieter/less catered to 24/7-partying students, but such things may not exist.

I've stayed here, it was really clean and I thought good for the price. We got a huge double room for like 80 euros:

It's in Kreuzberg.

highly, highly recommend this hostel: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187323-d1036878-Reviews-Wombat_s-Berlin.html

best hostel I've ever stayed in, cleanest, cheapest. fun bar on the top floor with a great view of the city.

oh but I didn't read your criteria - it does definitely have a student-y vibe

one month passes...

Exceedingly stupid question -- does a "single room" generally mean just a small bed for one person and a "double room" mean a bed for two people? Or is a "double room" two beds?

Hey have you def settled on a hotel because I stayed in a really great one and am trying to find it online. Let me know if you have though and I'll stop looking :-).

In answer to your question I believe that what you said is correct. A single room would have accommodations for just one person whereas double is for two but could be either one big bed or two sm ones depending on the hotel in question.

I'm so jealous. I love Berlin.

This is driving me nuts - can't remember but my Dad has stayed there too. Will check with him tomorrow and report back.

Do you remember the neighborhood? I'm leaning toward Die Fabrik or Pension Kreutzberg if we can still book.

I wound up just booking the suitehotel potsdamerplatz. I know it's a chain, but the rooms look neat in a kitschy sort of way and it was $71/night with fees for a suite in a great location, about the best deal I could find (cheaper than a lot of hostels).

I wish I weren't so bad at making decisions. Now I keep thinking I should have picked something else. But it will be fine and the hotel is not what matters.
