Speed Dating C/D

Should I give in and go speed dating? I'm curious about the whole process, as well as being bored with single-ness. Any tips/ tricks/ advice/ warnings etc? Those who have been, was it all cool with nice people and relaxed chatting, or, as I am imagining, was it all full of artificial niceness and fake personalities?

(I did search for an old thread on this, but I'll be damned if I can find it)

Nobody goes speed dating except jobbing sitcom writers and novellists looking for material. Fact.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 8 January 2007 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

So classic then?

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

Depends if a struggling novelist is more or less your idea of the perfect partner...

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Monday, 8 January 2007 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

Well no, but the kind of person that ends up in novels might be.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

i think i'd be good at this. there wouldn't be enough time for me to say something stupid, unfunny, or generally put my foot in it.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

That's kinda my logic. I don't think even I could bore someone in 3 minutes.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

The downside is that you're actually supposed to intrigue them in 3 minutes. That's the bit I'd struggle with.

some sort of elaborate costume perhaps

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think it's supposed to be about intriging or anything. It's based on pure first impressions - looks, smile, hormones, etc.

My first impressions are almost always entirely wrong, so I'm not sure what good that is.

Do Not Feed The Crush (kate), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

in that case nobody would give a high hoot about me. Yes I'm in that sort of mood today.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

Though I read in the Guardian last weekend that how well men do at speed dating is based on how tall they are. So JB might do well.

Do Not Feed The Crush (kate), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

how about thin ferret-faced men?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

I mean what, you just make small talk for 3 minutes and let the pheromones do their work? There's gotta be more to it than that.

Tall men do well? How so?

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

women like tall men?

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, here's the article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,,1971889,00.html

Oh I see, you do well if you're hott, and that's as far as the analysis goes. Well, I suppose that's as far as it HAS to go.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

There's 3 places left and it's £20. You lot may think it's a rubbish idea, but you think EVERYTHING'S a rubbish idea. Right, I'll just go andf book.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

Secretly, I think it's a great idea, but I wouldn't admit it to anyone, oh...

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

a friend of mine met his g/f this way and she is well fit, so classic.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

arr, but is he?

It's just a 'pair w/ someone within yr range' right?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's a good idea Johnny, and you're just the kind of good-looking, friendly chap who should do well. Report back plz!

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Oh bollox, the age range thing confused me:

Price: £20
Oxford
Tuesday 9th January
Women 26-36, Men 28-38
Women:3 places remaining, Men:3 places remaining

And I'm 27. The don't have one for me till the 20th Feb! Rubbish.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

That age range thing is fucked.

Like a 36 year old woman is going to stand a chance competing with 26 year olds?

Oh we might as well go and sweep our fireplaces now.

Do Not Feed The Crush (kate), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

It was decided the other night that I need an older woman. I'll be bearing this in mind when I go, and I'm sure I can't be the only one!

And it's not about competing anyway, unless you think all men like exactly the same thing.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Dating threads make me too bitter to participate any further.

Do Not Feed The Crush (kate), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

of course the 38 year old men will have no probs intriguing the 26 year old women.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

I'd recommend having a drink or two beforehand. Not so much that you roll in with your pants round your ankles and the smell of fresh puke on your breath of course - but enough to quell the butterflies, loosen the tongue, lubricate the social gears, probably won't go amiss.

ledge (ledge), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

I was going to say do it!! But bah February. Knowing my luck you will probably meet YR FUTURE WIFE in two days time and I'll never get to learn about the real speed dating experience :)

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

i could never intrigue someone in 3 minutes. i need at least 6 months to a year.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

FWIW, here are other threads with handy advice on the topic:

i am going speed dating for the first time in my life tonight - what should i expect?
ok, so after you go speed dating, what is the etiquette for contacting them?

and, my personal favourite:

Indie speed dating

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Oh come on! Do it! What do you have to lose? You shouldn't see this as a "chance to meet your partner" but just a larff really. If you do meet someone, well, then YAY and HOERAH.

i could never intrigue someone in 3 minutes

Took me one minute to know T was the one for me.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

Do they check your birthdate? If not I'd do it anyway!

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

they might disqualify you from sex if the truth got out.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

just tell them you're only as old as the woman you're creepin' on.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

Like a 36 year old woman is going to stand a chance competing with 26 year olds?

I'm not sure all men in the their late 30s would rather go out with a 26 year old than a 36 year old!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

but are they more likely to? (probably yes oh well)

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

when we were 16 the girls preferred to go out with older guys. payback!

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

In your face, society.

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

Did this tonight. It was entertaining. Talked to one chick about
Vertigo comics, which she was discovering.
