TS: Beatles vs Korn

OK received wisdom has it that Brit Invasion filtered US blooze thru art-school refractive lenses thus providing infinite self-regeneration fuel for R&B-derived pop music, so why not apply same straitjacket to US nu-metal and claim it as Americanization of the Smiths? (ie instrumental perf. more textural than linear-expressive, lyrics more introspective/anthropological than heroic/individualist) IE if britblooze = hyperbolic blooze then nu-metal = h. indie! (Of course this ties in with my theory that if (for arguments' sake) punk 'broke' Stateside in 1991 then given a transatlantic timelag then RHCP/FNM/JA = Zep/Sab/Floyd (REM = Jethro Tull heh!), Replacements/Husker Du = Who/Cream ('cept Bob Stinson = J Hendrix and D Pirner = J Fogerty), and to get even more ridiculous Black Flag/DKs = King Crimson/Yes

(stuff i stupidly left out - theory predicated on Pistols/Smiths = G'nR/Nirvana. Of course one can counter this with counter-directional transatlantic thievery, ie Oasis = Cheap Trick x Skynryd, Judas Priest = Steppenwolf x Vanilla Fudge - re Priest, I might've mentioned this on the 'gay' thread but they have this track "Raw Deal" that predates Turbonegro by 20 years, mentions "denim dudes" and "big boys, ready for action" in "New York, Fire Island". Bucks Palace = Heavy Metal Parking Lot?)

No.

That first sentence had me laughing aloud for several seconds at a stretch.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a grand Dave Qism and Nickalicious needs to give into the passion. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

So, what of the era of introduction of classical elements/cryptic lyrical content into rock music a la early Genesis i.e. "sheet music rock"?

Peter Gabriel/Genesis = Mike Patton/Mr. Bungle?

Am I playing this game right?

nickalicious, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a start. What you're aiming at is comparisons which initially make no sense at all but when explained help you think in new ways about both points of reference, as well as larger assumptions about music. Chuck Eddy really opened the door on this for me as a reader, Dave Q just takes it to undreamed of levels (all the more so because he is a very rabid and all encompassing listener, which I don't know if enough people on the boards give him credit for).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, so, um, how 'bout this one?

The mid-20th-Century American jazz and rock movements reflect that time periods integration of the black and white populations ie the African and European roots of Americans, and thusly Elvis Presley/Chuck Berry/Beatles = Miles Davis/Dizzy Gillespie/Roland Kirk in that both represent the integration of African influence onto European roots and vice versa...on one side, African-rooted musics integrating European scales/modes/keys/etc. (jazz/bebop), and European-rooted musics integrating African rhythms (rock-n-roll).

Is that a little better? :D

nickalicious, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It's an approach! But consider the way Dave Q is phrasing it up there, the conceptual leaps in a brief amount of space and the core initial comparison that in its bluntness makes you go, "The hell?" Scrounge through the 'Taking Sides' section of the archive of the board and check out some of his winners. Some are little more closely connected, thus Styx vs. Toto and Flashdance vs. Footloose vs. Top Gun. But then things go merrily insane with Frank Zappa vs. Billy Joel, Stone Roses vs. Guns 'n' Roses and Ween vs. Redd Kross -- and this is just the start! I know I'm missing out on the real winners...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

(Keep in mind that I love Dave Q and these comparisons to death.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The back catalog of comparisons helped alot in my comprehension...I think I too may be a fan of this technique now. I particularly liked the Redd Kross vs. Ween one, and not just cause I love Ween. :D
