no

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Because it's GREBT, of course!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Because it reminds me of grebes

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Because, when played backwards, it says "Fremme neppa venette"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

saying that things are grebt RoXoR.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

it prevents those pesky "great" googlers

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

It's GRATE, that's why.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I would love to see a moratorium on this sort of stuff ("b-but" being at the top of the list).

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 22 November 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Also: beginning posts with "So."

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 22 November 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree rocket! "b-but" is terrible; momentum clearly dictates more than just one leading b.

"b-b-b-but it's GREBT" = NOW you're cooking with gasoline

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Because "GRATE" was getting stale.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the pronunciation of "grebt"? Does it rhyme with "debt"?

o. nate (onate), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

and can we eat it?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

no, it rhymes with strebt, as in The Strebts are grebt!

Jeff W, Friday, 22 November 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The Strebts? Isn't that that britfolk band with Sandy Dennby in it?

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

It has a hard b.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-b-b-b-b-but OH NO! ITS GRA3BT3! OH NOOOOO!!!

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 22 November 2002 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been here over a year and still don't get the "Xor" thing.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 22 November 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

it's pronounced greb'd

jel -- (jel), Friday, 22 November 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-but OH N0X0R! GRA3BT3X0R DOES NOT EXIST! OH NO0O0OX0R!!!"

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Saturday, 23 November 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

someone wrote The Doors RoXor in the law library toilets - this serves a brutal conundrum - ilx doesn't like the doors, but ilx likes RoXor, but does only ilx like RoXor or is it used all over the world wide net?

also someone wrote, beneath some hating, that so solid roXor - i can't remember if this was me, but it's not my handwriting. hmm. < /anecdotal evidence>< /boring>

dee aitch (david h), Saturday, 23 November 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

but does only ilx like RoXor or is it used all over the world wide net?
r0x0r, fux0r and sux0r are each accepted hacker slang.

six months pass...
revive (it offers old insight into the "Using ILM terminology in real life" thread)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Custos that was a weak justification for indulging your inexplicable addiction to reviving old threads

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Two reasons:
1) Its a fun thread that that the nu-nu-nu-ILM'ers would've never known about if someone hadn't bring it back.
2) J0hn...I never *had* to justify it until you made me self-concious about it. I only tacked on that greyed-in comment to appease *you*.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it still doesn't explain grebt though.

the only reason i can think of using it is that "great" is a shitty generic adjective, but it's a word that's used to describe music/stuff all of the time. so by changing the "a" to a "b", said shitty adjective gets a new lease on life. i far prefer it to grate which seems deigned to poking fun at poor spellers.

it's a mystery!

Etymology of "grebt"?

hmm.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread from ILE is "urgent and key":

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly we must eat you.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

obvious retort: what exactly is colin s barrow, what does he taste like, and is he edible?
(Check his rekkid collection, check to see if he *has* "taste".)
