do band members count?

Josh (Josh), Friday, 27 December 2002 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

you obviously havent seen that VH-1 show where they follow around the fans of a band, one of them being African-American.

Obviously.

Why would anyone of any colour like the Dave Matthews Bland?

Callum (Callum), Friday, 27 December 2002 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Callum: THAT IS THE CORRECT ANSWER. (*SINGS 'WE SHALL OVERCOME'*)

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 27 December 2002 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My black girlfriend (well, she's not really my girlfriend, but I'm hopeful) brought up Dave Matthews Band and said she liked them a little. She asked me if I liked them and I said I really hadn't heard them but that I was prejudiced against them (mostly thanks to ILM, incidentally). This is the same one who thinks Bobby Brown is hip hop, but Public Enemy is not, however.

I just heard one of their songs on the radio a couple weeks back and thought it was okay, certainly not the horror they are made out to be here, but nothing I would seek out either.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 27 December 2002 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to like them. I think that their first two records were very interesting, but now I could care less. I think that Matthews shot his creative load on those first two albums and has been treading water ever since. Plus, the bands fanbase was a lot cooler when no one knew who the hell they were. And yes, I'm Black.

Brenya, Friday, 27 December 2002 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

DMB strikes every now and then with a song or components of songs that I really like (the "Eat too much" song, the verses to "The Space Between Us", "Crash", the "I am no superman" song). Also, the snotty musician in me cuts them more slack because of the violinist-from-Juilliard angle (although that is offset a little bit since he looks like The Predator). Outside of that, they don't register on my radar.

I think it's a common thing that bands that are bland will draw more ire on ILM than bands that are actively awful. The only exceptions I can think of are Korn and Limp Bizkit.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 December 2002 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

No, they are actively, unbelievably awful. If only for Dave Matthews' vocals which, I swear, sound like Adam Sandler! The way they both hit those high notes like Tim Allen belching or somethin' and then come back down to growl every once in a while -- ugh!

The rest of the band blows too, but yes, in a somewhat indiscriminate way. Jazz for guys in frats, maybe? Whatever; may they all suffer sudden, instant, and even immediate DEATH.

original bgm, Friday, 27 December 2002 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There are many things I'd criticize DMB for (building their career on slight permutations of three different songs, unimaginative use of the violin, removing all danceability from their music ina quest to appeal to the segment of the adult-contemporary crowd that used to listen to them when they were still a college party band), but Dave's singing isn't one of them. Well, okay, his diction is horrible, but show me a pop musician who isn't a "singer" (ie, someone who isn't an instrumentalist first) who doesn't have horrible diction. Also, the Adam Sandler comparison is apt but I don't actively dislike Adam's voice, either (and he sounds great on that track where he's aping Tony Bennett).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 December 2002 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, the idea that there could be any band that has NO black listeners or NO white listeners (etc.) is silly.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 27 December 2002 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend is a band, it has one fan, I'm white. Therefore, no black fans.

Obtuba, Friday, 27 December 2002 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I find thee basick question being asked here rather dodgy. I am not aware that one's ethnicity has any bearing on whether thee musick one likes is any good or not. If thee original intent ov thee question is something like "dave matthews band is shit, as proven by thee fakt that black people allegedly don't like them", then that really is very dodgy indeed IMO. I myself have never heard thee Dave Matthews Band.

Oh, but I do! And I still stand by my hatred of DM's voice. I mean, I wouldn't know if whatever he's doing is technically good or bad. But it makes me cringe, dammit.

I didn't know one could type with an accent. A very, very annoying one at that.

On the VH1 Episode... you'll note that the black girl's friends all hated DMB and made fun of her for it, and when she drove around town playing it, people actively told her they disliked the music.

Personally, I totally don't understand the bands appeal. Crash was kindof catchy... that's about it. And with all the different instruments they've got going, you'd think they'd change it up a bit, all their songs are really same-y.

David Allen, Saturday, 28 December 2002 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I was looking through my cousin's mp3s over Christmas and he really likes Dave Matthews Band. His drive was about half full of show bootlegs, actually. The other half was all Roots, Nappy Roots, and the Vanilla Sky soundtrack, so I was thinking maybe the Dave Matthews thing was his girlfriend's influence -- but you don't end up with like 5 gigs of Dave Matthews Band bootlegs just because your girlfriend likes him. Not unless she's really, really good in bed. So by this thread's count at least six black people like Dave Matthews Band. (That's counting the two black people who are in Dave Matthews Band; if either of them quit and publically claim that they never really liked the music they were playing I will revive this thread with a correction.)

do any black people like dave mathews band?
Only those who have had the proper surgical alterations. The produre -- called a Full-frontal Lambadamy -- removes the part of their brains that give them 'nacheral riddims' and impairs their ability to dance. If done successfully, the pacified subject cabn not only groove to Dave Matthews (without a hint of irony), those truly (what is a word that means exactly the opposite of "gifted"?) can 'get down' to Blues Traveller and Matchbox 20. Some of the procedures most 'successful' examples include Colin Powell and the more pigmentally intense members of the Young Republicans. None of whom would know who Chuck D was even if Chuck came to their house wearing a "Hi! I'm Chuck D" t-shirt and introduced himself.

A clarification: the part about "and impairs their ability to dance" is ambigious. I meant the procedure impairs their ability to dance, not the part of the brain.

I can't hear the words "Dave Matthews Band" without mentally applying a German accent. This stems from them being aggressively marketed to the people of Hamburg in 1995. The marketing worked - they're *huge* in Germany now.

Try it tho: Dafe Metthuse Bend...it might make their existence more tolerable.

ps. no, I think they're bloody awful.

Dave Matthews appears singing on a duet called Iwoya on Black Ivory Soul, the latest album by Angelique Kidjo. It's an initially off-putting but strangely more-ish combination. The most unlikely combination of voices you can imagine (OK, maybe you can imagine a more unlikely combination but that would be a new thread). The song has some awful words e.g. "You don't have to be old to be wise, can you hear the baby crying". She should have got him to sing in Fon.

do any black people like dave mathews band?

steve patrick, Thursday, 27 February 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My black girlfriend

Actually this was a misunderstanding. She doesn't actually consider herself black, but bi-racial. (I never really "saw" her as black, but thought, based on her telling me she had told someone she was black, that she identified that way. It's a long story.) So there's one less black person who likes Dave Matthews.

(And whether or not she's my girlfriend is even more undecided now than it was then.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 27 February 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I no longer like "Crash".

I'm black but my disdain for Dave Matthews has nothing to do with ethnicity. He just sucks. However, to answer the original question, I've never met any.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to high school with one. The things was, his mom was black, and his dad was white. I thought of him as being a black kid, but he said he was white, and he dressed accordingly (Abercrombie & Finch etc). Black students loved making fun of him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Crash" is bad enough with it's real lyrics (though I think the music is like, totally the best Dawson's swell-never-peaks sweetness ever), but that closing melody always sounds like he's saying "I'm the king of the castle/you're girly asshole/crash into me."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ps I don't really understand how DMB is in any way African-influenced, unless you mean that the African-American musicians in his band are tapping into some sort of internal reservoir of African-ness in order to play cheesy soft-rock sax solos

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I mean that if you are familiar with African music and familiar with the Dave Matthews Band, I think you can hear the former in the latter, probably in no small part because the leader of the DMB is originally from Africa.
