I've been lax thus far this year, trying to save money to move, and I've only made a relatively small handful of purchases. YYYs, White Stripes, FM Knives, Radiohead, Bonnie Prince Billy, Califone, Janet Bean, Detroit Cobras, Holly Golightly, a few others.

So recommend me some I don't have. All genres welcome. Dig deep.

Run to Ruin by Nina Nastasia

If you like bonnie prince Billy you should dig it.

jed-e-3, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Four Tet - Rounds
organic, melodic, acoustic idm

okkervil river - down the river of golden dreams
singer-songwriter with a lacing of folk: shows verve and spirit and passion.

songs:ohia - magnolia electric co.
swampy southern rock with a big heart broken-open

nina nastasia's a good pick too.

David Banner - Mississippi the album

sean g, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

if you liked that great bonnie prince billy record, then certainly the nina nastasia record, and also m. ward's "transfiguration of vincent" and devendra banhart's "oh me oh my.." (that one might be 2002 though), all great. and if your looking for a more instrumental trip, then the late john fahey's "red cross" is great (the title track is too fucking haunting), and the latest dirty three album was good. if you liked califone, then try and pick up their deceleration 2 disc, live improvisational instrumentals, and pretty damn fine too. if you're lookin for something more rockin, then i'll certainly second songs:ohia - magnolia electric company, which is thoroughly excellent, and the pernice brothers - "yours mine and ours" was good too.

oh and of course neil young's "on the beach" reissue thats just out.
hmm this year most of my favorite albums have been kinda sad ones. are there any good happy albums this year that are anywhere? i wish beat happening were still around.

as for non rock stuff, umm im probably not the best person to ask.

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=MISS70308111543&sql=Atpaxlfweacqi

it goes from beautiful old school soul hip-hop to the best black rock album in a decade to beautiful nu-R&B hip-hop

everytime i hear someone say "just blaze!" at the beginning of a track i get a "special feeling"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"rock"? the only songs with a real rock vibe are "Line Em Up" and that awful "Life" song. all the singles and the 2 tracks produced by Bink! are great and redeem the boring bits, though.

Ken Vandermark 5 - 'Airports for Light'

I think it's been a pretty gd year for new jazz recs, but I haven't seen this one get much attention, and it's a cracker - not 'groundbreaking' or esp. 'revolutionary', but a long alb that holds yr interest throughout, full of good compositions and great playing (esp. from Jeb Bishop on trombone) - it's a lot more than just another hard-blowin' outmusic sesh, but the final track is the HOTTEST thing I've ever heard Vandermark put on disc.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Gillian Welch.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(JMFC do I need to tweak that horrible F'way review. I had half an hour to hear it and write about it, and it hasn't ceased to grow on me each time I've listened to it since.)

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh -- right now I would say Ricardo Villalobos' Taka Taka mix, though the MU album is seriously fucked up and is worthy of all the mentions.

I just had a low-level breakdown over the sheer wealth of new music I have to or want to listen to. Not enough time in a day, etc.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it's been pretty taxing this year, although that hardly seems like the proper word.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Nevermore, Enemies of Reality

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it's been pretty taxing this year, although that hardly seems like the proper word.

It can be. I'm not saying it universally is, merely that it can be.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i listened to the colder album a lot today. it could be my favourite.

I've probably played All Your Summer Songs by Saturday Looks Good to Me at least four dozen times since obtaining it. "Underwater Heartbeat" is the best, most irresistible pop song you'll hear this year, and it'll make you rethink your stance on saxophones in pop music. Some of the songs have such dense (think Spector) arrangements, it'll blow your mind to comprehend that this album was mostly recorded on a 4-track. I immediately loved the bouncy pop tunes, but the slower tracks have grown on me in a big way. Closest thing to a flawless album I've heard all year. Great lyrics, too, especially for sad pop/Magnetic Fields fans:

You spent such a long time typing that you forgot how to write letters...

It feels like dancing on wedding rings when there's no difference between diamonds and glass...

The vinyl has two bonus tracks, one of which is the superb "Can't Ever Sleep" which starts out to apparently be about insomnia, and then ends, in a devastating way, with the line, "I can't ever sleep with you again." (WHY IS THIS A BONUS SONG?!)

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a close race between Allison Moorer's live album, Radiohead, and the Postal Service. Still waiting on a great hip-hop album this year (though I do like albums by Aceyalone, King Geedorah/MF Doom, and the Majesticons).

Adam Harrison-Friday, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

adam I was just
watching the show DVD!
that album does rule

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the DVD more because of the solo acoustic number that got cut out of the CD version. And no matter what people say, the album closer with Kid Rock seems fitting, and I love it.

The Thermals - More Parts Per Million

largehearted boy (largeheartedboy), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My favs so far = Hail to the Thief, quebec, Mississippi: The Album, Wonderful Rainbow, Elephant, Sumday, Ani DiFranco's Evolve, and Tomahawk's Mit Gas. Since this thread is saying "recommend one", howevah, and nobody else has recommended it yet, I'll recommend Sumday (by Granddaddy if'n ya didn't know); it's like the album they've been trying to make all these years. Totally great.
