what's the dumbest thing you ever posted on ILM?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing musically interesting since '67 except brief volleys of opposition: punk, postpunk, hip hop, ahem... grunge. All completely absorbed or corrupted within a year of being a blip on the radar. Why bother staying engaged?

!!!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I could link 60% of my posts to this thread.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a lot to choose from myself.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

unlike everyone else here, apparently!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

this is pretty much the worst, look how i used to steal the Emphatic Initial Capitalization thing from ned!!-

before i'm categorized as some sort of hiphop purist shouting on about Skills on the Microphone, i'd like to point out that i don't even own a thing by eminem, precisely because the rapping and the production don't come together to create music that i want to hear more than tons of other music. for example, i think i like to actually LISTEN to tribe called quest more than de la soul, even though i recognize that de la are superior in the lyrics department and certainly with the music. why? because tribe have a style that i love, and q-tip saying 'uh, uh, check it out' it sounds better than posdnous saying ' i run amok sasquatch and I like to eat live crab' (to use a poor example). i've enjoyed missy before, i especially liked the make-a-bunch-of- weird-sounds thing she did on 'get ur freak on', which complimented the production well. but she's just not very interesting overall, and i no-one at all would care if not for timbaland.
herb made a good (and annoying) point back in my rakim thread when he compared r's flow to prog rock, as technical virtuoso to be admired but not loved. eminem (and rakim, geez) goes beyond that, though, because of sheer SOUL (yeah i know, whatever). em isn't just lyrically riffing epmd-style about his copious skills, he's saying shit that is IMPORTANT to him and important to modern music, and saying it creatively. but i still listen to epmd way more.

tho in my defense i ws just out of h.s. and still reacting to all the white kids who only listened to em and no other rap!! ugh also i came around on missy as an albums-instead-of-singles artist like right after that too by actually buying da real world (my fav missy single ws shes a bitch- ROCKIST!) and as a lyricist instead of trying to get ppl to listen to dj premier and raekwon instead :/

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

speaking of premier i cdve sworn there ws an old thread where i tried to tell ppl that prodigy and premo were better than any new producers but i cdnt find it- pretty much all my posts as a 17/18 year old are embarrassing and horrible

"She's Electric". Is it the top of the arc of musical greatness? Will we ever see the like of it again?
-- Jole (weaseloptio...), December 19th, 2003.

In my defence - I was being silly.

Jole (Jole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

lil geir!!

sad thing is, i really LIKE orbital, and 'in sides' is indeed a great album, but certainly not the 'best techno album of all time'. i always wished orbital would go further into the evocative depths hinted at in their music, but it seemed as if they were afraid to go far outside the realm of 'rave music'. i wish it all weren't so sharp and active all the time. actually, their last release was an improvement on that aspect, (but not in melodic structure) so i look forward to their forthcoming releases. but come on, orbital? why don't we all just name out favorite future sound of london albums while we're at it? p.l.u.r., man. p.l.u.r.

'i wish it wasnt so sharp and active'!??!?!?!!!?!?!!

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

this may have been before i discovered how boring the depths of non-danceable dance could be

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

actually it reminds me of when kate the saint (i think) said she didnt like hiphop bcz she heard miseducation of lauryn hill and it ws 'too harsh'

look how i used to steal the Emphatic Initial Capitalization thing from ned!!

IDENTITY THIEF. Man, I'm going to sue.

As for me, oh, probably all of them. And yet I continue on!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

haha 'rap city is good bcz they show early 90s hiphop sometimes!! oh and eightball & mjg i guess'

BET's rap city. despite the stupidity of host big tigger (especially when he enters the 'freestyle corner'), with frequently brilliant guest djs (kool dj red alert, dj len, tony touch, etc) and totally random guest artists (eightball and mjg one day, beatnuts the next, krs-one got next - of course, all these artists have videos in current rotation, another great thing about the show) it's very great. plus, sometimes they'll take the day off and just show four or five 'ol school jams' in a row, allowing you to see somewhat overlooked non-old school classics like '93 til infinity' and 'electric relaxation' again (or for the first time, seeing as how they weren't exactly overplayed the first time around). lots of other treats, like birthday announcements (happy belated, biz markie!) and sporadic discussions of hiphop culture, and you have the best music show on tv for a person who doesn't have m2. represent.

All you have to do is say that 9/11 changed everything, man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked it, especially the parts that weren't about ja rule. actually i'm a bit miffed that you wrote about indie-rock white guys only listening to mainstream rap because of the blippy-bloopy techno shit. that was going to be MY article! definitely one of the best things i've read on ft in a while.

ugh the sad hiphop thread where i name 'some less popular stuff you might have overlooked'!!!!

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mind most of the contra hiphop things I've said, but starting a thread about an artist (David Banner) I had never even heard a complete song by was pretty stupid (especially on ILM where there is no way to get away with such things).

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

haha to be fair im also pretty tired of threads abt how that genius david banner is 'infusing the meaningless lyrics of crunk with human emotion and social protest' or how he invented screw or whatever

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Also it seems like tourette syndrome has become trendy.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Question about Amps [Do not read this thread if you are a digital multieffect thingee using ponce!]

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

is this really the worst we can do?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

there is so, so much terrible stuff. such as:

No one who has heard Bee Thousand can ever genuinely appreciate a major studio romantic comedy. No one who owns a Pavement t-shirt can ever laugh at their TV again. No one who listens to indie rock is capable of engaging with popular culture.

something you wrote yourself, jackoff.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that was me. sorry.

William Wiggins (d k), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

right then... another one for me:

something you wrote yourself, jackoff.

I attempted to start a really embarassing "let's give thanks for our favorite music" thread on Thanksgiving a year ago where I said something like "let's put aside our cynicism and give thanks!" that didn't get a single response. Total crickets and tumbleweeds.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's Give Thanks...

ha! I like when you say "jeez I hope this doesn't die right away!" nice one!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

at least you had the decency to quit while you were ahead

I got a tip from China that they stole old Buddha's gong so I took an ocean liner down to old Hong Kong

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The "I Fucking Hate Religion" thread. I thought I was being so clever...nope, just making an ass of myself.
