which ones are worth the plastic they're pressed on and which should be recycled for low cost roofing for the poor?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

you mean music DVDs as in music movies or as in the music-playback format?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, yes, i mean movies.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be dead in the cold cold ground before i recognize the dvd music-playback format.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you seen the Sun Ra DVD?

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It's worth seeing...once.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I still haven't watched the Amon Duul 2 DVD.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't go wrong with that Gondry/Jonze/Cunningham trio, and if you can find Saint Etienne DVDs they should be acquired (unless you have inexplicable hate for them, and in that case nevermind)

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Gondry/Jonze/Cunningham trio

SATAN!!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(kind of)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but the Gondry one has that cool Cibo Matto video.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always been curious about the DVD entitled "Syd Barrett's First Trip". Has anyone actually seen it? Is it painful?

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Gondry DVD is *awesome*. Also Interstella 5555

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I still need to get that Devo DVD. And the Sublime Frequencies stuff.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i briefly entertained buying the cunningham one while i was in tower last night. (i bought robocop instead.)

xpost: holy shit interstella 5555!!

xxpost: stence what sublime frequencies stuff is on dvd. i have two of the cd's.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cunningham disc is actually quite good, but a bit thin compared to the other two.

...Was it the Robocop boxed set? I want me one of those.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Second the Devo DVD and Sublime Freq. All I've got is the Jma El Fna: Night Music of Morrocco (or something) and it is excellent. There is another thread around here somewhere with a lot of the best already discussed.
Apparently, there is a John Fahey DVD that is quite worthwhile. I saw it in a store and should have bought it. Oh well, there are always opportunities to buy more shite. right?
Quittin time.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

xxpost:
Don't be fooled by "Syd's First Trip" DVD.
A few minutes of silent home movie footage of a couple guys in a field does not a dvd make.
That said, it's fine as an addendum to any Pink Floyd bootleg you can get at Kim's.

sexyDancer, Monday, 14 June 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

jess there's a couple here - http://www.sublimefrequencies.com/. Tunisia, Morrocco, Burma. I've seen part of the Nat Pwe ceremony (Burma) one.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always been curious about the DVD entitled "Syd Barrett's First Trip". Has anyone actually seen it? Is it painful?

I have it. It's bare 15 minutes long and it cost $15. That's the most painful thing about it.
It's just Syd on shrooms wandering around and staring at his hands. Then there's some footage of Floyd standing around outside Abbey Road. It's a ripoff, don't buy it.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

no adam it was straight up robocop for 8.99. fuck a robocop 2.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the Robocop Criterion Director's Cut. I could care less a bout the crap sequels.

Here's a breakdown of music DVDs I own:
Bob Dylan -Don't Look Back-search
Meeting people is easy-destroy, boring as hell
Syd Barrett's first trip-DESTROY, see above
NICO ICON -SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH
Hendrix at woodstock -search
Hendrix band of Gypsies -search if you really dig that album, the footage is not so great quality.
Tenacious D-search if you're a fan, everything you need right here.
RHCP Funky Monks-search if only for some truly bonkers Frusciante quotes.
Pavement Slow Century-search if you're a fan, but pavement were such smug richy rich bastards(at least they give off that impression) it's hard to watch the doc more than once.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

we went this far and finally a Slow Century recommendation. Rats.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to know what takes place in Robocop 3, but that doesn't mean I need to watch it.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

In this second sequel to Robocop, the mechanical humanoid opposes the evil designs of his creators who have gone corrupt and are trying to take over all real estate in Detroit, kicking the poorer citizens out of their homes and turning them out into the streets.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

soooo, it's different from the other ones how exactly?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it doesn't have peter weller. I think that's it.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The first one tackled identity, the second drug abuse, and by the sounds of it, the third instalment takes homelessness head on. Brave stuff.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Boney M DVD-EP

(not a movie, no)

(Jon L), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The recent Birthday Party DVD is very good for it's modest cost, though the live footage on the disc is only fair in quality.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

what about fugazi/instrument dvd? any good? the 50 cent bonus dvd?

lightning bolt video power of salad is a far more auspiucious introduction than their studio work.

friends forever video is not that great but has a lot of keepin' it real.

also, Kim's 0wns. Those beefheart comp dvds can't be beat.

autovac (autovac), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have fugazi instrument on the original VHS. It's pretty good. I want to know if anyone's seen the GBV doc, Watch Me Jumpstart.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

also, risking the wrath of B&S haters, anyone seen the Belle and Sebastian DVD, For fans only? Also I hear there's supposed to be a Magnetic Fields DVD soon?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

plz Mary, no more Morrissey nipple!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i (re)bought instrument today actually. it's what sparked off this whole notion.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the Mag Fields one is meant to be a live London versh of 69 Love Songs with like Marc Almond and Neil Hannon and Sarah Cracknell singing guest songs. or something like that. but it was also meant to be out in 2002.

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the first time I heard about it was 2001! hope it'll materialize someday. also wasn't Merritt working on a musical film with Daniel "Lemony Snicket" Handler called The Song From Venus?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Fugazi, Instrument = perfection. Electrifying live performance footage, excellently insightful documentary footage.
Lightning Bolt, The Power Of Salad - as said above, the perfect intriduction.
Madness, Divine/Take It Or Leave It - the former has the videos, shoestring wit and hilarious invention; the latter is the movie, shot for pennies but very raw and realistic.
The Who, The Kids Are Alright - for my money the best rock'n'roll movie ever.
The Sex Pistols, The Filth & The Fury - the second best rock'n'roll movie ever (and i don't even like the Sex Pistols)
GBV, Watch Me Jumpstart - too short is my only complaint - its a wwonderful, impressionistic and affecting documentary.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

bit obvious but the conflict dvd is worth it. better than getting 4 hours of endless 'intwerviews' on those lord of the decks etc comps.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Pavement Slow Century-search if you're a fan, but pavement were such smug richy rich bastards(at least they give off that impression) it's hard to watch the doc more than once.

I don't think they come off that way at all, 'cept for Malkmus who fits your description exactly. It's a great DVD all in all and I spent a boring Sunday watching the entire thing in one sitting. The only thing that disappointed me was the Seattle concert however, which was pretty flat. Doubly dissapointing as I've never seen them live.

Michael B, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Merritt be working on all sorts all the time. Also currently adapting Neil Gaiman's children's book The Wolves In The Walls as a musical...

actual recommendations:
the Cure's Trilogy is more essential than actually owning Bloodflowers and Pornography on CD or Disintegration on vinyl.

Pulp's Hits not only shows them to have been almost as visually witty as they were lyrically, but is also full of great home movies and shitty embarrassing TV appearances (the latter edited into one big confusing montage, probably representing how that period of time felt for them) and Jarvis' TV doco Do You Remember The First Time? asking minor slebs and artists and people's mums about losing their virginity

Pet Shop Boys' Pop Art has more late-period stuff that I don't care about or had never even heard, but you can have Neil & Chris talking about shit instead of listening to the music, which is a selling point even when the music is fantastic early stuff

Midnight Oil's Best Of Both Worlds has two live shows, from 1982 and 1985. the band is not only totally killing, but they don't play any boring songs because they hadn't gotten around to writing any yet! plus loads of bonus audio tracks from soundcheck and stuff, and a free CD of the second gig.

the Clash's Rude Boy has interviews and stuff to give the film itself possibly-much-needed context, a bunch of extra live footage, and! best of all, the menu option to skip the narrative altogether and just show the live Clash songs.

They Might Be Giants' Gigantic is a slightly unsatisfying documentary that basically says "they were indie and had no band, then they were major and had a band, now they are indie and their fans are really nerdy." but if you like their music the DVD is super-hyper-awesome, with 4&1/2 hrs of bonus shit - live performances, in-store performances, radio performances, TV performances, presenting children's TV in the 80s, old EPKs, extra interview footage, pieces written and performed for some science show, classic videos with intros by band and director, extra footage of nerdy psycho fans and Michael McKean reciting the lyrics to I Palindrome I.

Divine Madness has Madness' videos on it, which would make it the best DVD ever if there wasn't a cheap Polygram "80s indie" compilation that has Prime Mover by Zodiac Mindwarp on it.

Dave McCormack & the Polaroids' Save Dave has me in the audience swaying drunkenly and moving my hair out of my face every three minutes.

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Underworld-Everything Everything (though you probably don't like them strongo do you?)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

no, his voice irritates me.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone know if either of the fela kuti DVDs are worth having, and if there's a *decent* James Brown DVD out there?

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Corporate Ghost DVD from Sonic Youth is excellent, really cool, but be careful about buying it in the UK - lots of people on the official site are reporting lots of sync, quality and listing problems at the moment. SY say they are looking into it. Mine is an import and looks and sounds great - it's Region 0 like the UK release too, so I don't know what's going on...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

jeff mills exhibitionist DVD has 3 or 4 mixes on it and a long pretentious interview (mostly because the interviewer asks leading questions). but really, i dont know if this is good for you or not, but there are no trippy videos (except on one of the mixes), just mills in a room with 3 turntables and a mixer.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a great caetano veloso dvd from brazil that's region 0.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the Cure's Trilogy is more essential than actually owning Bloodflowers and Pornography on CD or Disintegration on vinyl.

I might just agree with this. The performances are that definitive.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the DVD single for DJ Shadow's "Six Days". Wong Kar-Wei's video is pretty cool, much more sexual than how I ever read the song, but still well done, with clever little things like lightbulbs flicking in time with buzzes or someone striking a window in time with a 'crash' sound. The 'B-side' isn't that great though.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I was considering that SY DVD but held back so far since I was never crazy for most of their videos. Is the extended version of "The Diamond Sea" on it? that would tip me for sure.

How was the Zeppelin DVD thing that came out at the same time as How the West Was Won? I heard there's a DVD with a great version of "Achilles' Last Stand".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Daft Punk's 'D.A.F.T.' dvd has a priceless explanation from Michel Gondry for his "Around the World" video.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The Reggae installment of the Beat of the Heart series is pretty cool, if only for footage of Lee Perry at work in the BlackArk studio. I think it's called "Roots Rock Reggae," but I don't have it with me right now.

Additionally, is there any live footage/documentaries worth seeing of Bon Scott era AC/DC?

The Talking Head's Stop Making Sense will always be one of the top 5 things I have ever experienced. Pure Joy.

The Cornelius Point DVD is great. You have seen it if you saw him on tour for that record.
