Biggest Loser: Gordon Sumner "Sting" or Ric Ocasek?

Well they are both losers who contributed to the mess of bad music known collectively as 80's music. If I was to to choose the biggest loser though I would go with Gordon Sumner because he tries to act so cool even though he's old and his music is craptacular.

Kyle Everett, Sunday, 8 August 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

While I find fault with your perception of '80s music, I whole-heartedly agree with your Sting pick.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 8 August 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ric Ocasek married a hot swimsuit model so we can't exactly call him loser for that reason alone.
And now that I think of it , The Cars > The Police so I think the choice is clear.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 8 August 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

ric ocasek is SO not a loser. though he did have a mullet.

the cars stand up better than the police these days and to these ears. not to mention that he produced the bad brains and suicide (though he also unleashed weezer -- and, ergo, emo -- on the world).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 August 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ric Ocasek's bit part in Hairspray was better than any of Sting's bit parts.

ocasek worked with bad brains and suicide, so he's ace in my book.

ned, my insurance doesn't cover blinding, so be careful when you posts pictures.

That which does not kill you makes you think of Sting in winged jockstraps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

something incongruous about that sixpack on such a scrawny body. incongruous and...awful.

He does yoga to keep his abs in check (and, supposedly, so he can screw for 6 hours at a pop.*) but apparently he does no pushups, jogging or weights to tone the rest of his pasty self into shape.

* = If this is true, It might explain why his wife left him. Ever wonder how many times his wife demanded: "Gordon! Either bring me to orgasm or GET OFF of me!"
Right. I didn't wonder about it either.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 8 August 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Kyle, have you been smoking crack? The Cars rule.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 8 August 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

what a strange question

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 8 August 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Something which includes a premise containing the words "The Cars" and "bad music" in close proximity is not something which requires a great deal of time spent addressing.

I am a Sting fan and from his time with the Police to today, he has grown musically and is not afraid to experiment with his music. Sting has matured and his music has gotten better. So for all of you still stuck in the 80's with all those bands that did not make it into the 90's or the present day, stay there and play your same old songs over and over again and relive your memories while the rest of us move on and go forward and leave all of you behind.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sting broke up the Police as he was tired of being confined by the format of a three-piece rock group, only to launch a solo career notable for its tireless adherence to edgeless, yawnsome and utterly unadventruous pabulum. Suck on that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Sting has a great voice and writes great lyrics, sure he's not perfect but i admire him. The Police where perhaps his greatest acheivement but he has had notable solo success. Playing with Gil Evans was a highlight, playing with Craig David was a lowlight.
I guess you gotta take the rough with the smooth.
But overall (despite being somwhat disenfranchised with his more recent work), i think he's a pretty fine musician.

Highland Spring, Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

For David, yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Biggest Loser: Kyle Everett, perhaps.

and all the other envious soles on this little pathetic blog.

and remember to always keep on praising mediocrity.

from all the other posts that I have read, this is the one thing that you all excel at very well.

This coming from a guy who thinks that Killing Joke makes worthwhile music. BOOM CHET BOOM CHET BOOM CHET

bahtology, Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

At leastt Killing Joke aren't BORING!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I find the same repetitive beat splattered with distorted guitars and barely capable root noted bass playing to be extremely boring. Add to it those screams or moaning in that thick brogue spouting out some psuedo pathos or protests. Give me a break. What is musical about that? Yikes.

bahtology, Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

This is like that episode of Samurai Jack where Jack faces off against his alter ego, isn't it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Sting v GG Allin

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, are you sure they're not even the same guy ? Were they ever seen in the same room together ? Perhaps Sting's accent is just a fake ? Like Clark Kent taking off his glasses, perhaps if Sting were to ever drop his mask of being a pretentious cunt, perhaps we would all see that he actually is GG.

Yeah, Sting ain't lasting no 6 hours with Paulina.

Does the loser of this thread go on to face the loser of the Stipe/Bono thread? No one has yet stated any good reason why Ocasek is a loser other than the mullet...

wetmink (wetmink), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Sting broke up the Police as he was tired of being confined by the format of a three-piece rock group...
True. True. He used to be in some sort of Jazz combo or somesuch, so his sudden transformation into a fake reggae-playing punk guy was baffling to those who knew him.
...only to launch a solo career notable for its tireless adherence to edgeless, yawnsome and utterly unadventruous pabulum. Suck on that.
The irony is this was Sting turning back into a Jazz-guy. Check who was his backup band during the Dream of the Blue Turtles-era.

Granted, most of his album tracks are dry snoozathons, he always throws at least one or two cheesy pop singles. I kinda like those.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Sting is the winner, hands down. Which in this case means he is the loser. Ocasek rocks in all ways.

Zach Ayres (Z_Ayres), Sunday, 8 August 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Does the loser of this thread go on to face the loser of the Stipe/Bono thread?"

There's no point on facing Sting with any other loser, simply because there's no bigger loser than him. He's the ULTIMATE loser.

daavid (daavid), Sunday, 8 August 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

...there's no bigger loser than him. He's the ULTIMATE loser.
Well, let's not jump the gun just yet. There's at least one more pair of contenders to consider...

Hahaha...you're an idiot. Also, no one in the Joke is Scottish. Do your homework next time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 August 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

writes great lyrics

in a pinch, i will defend sting, but not on these grounds!

||amateur!st|| (amateurist), Monday, 9 August 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

you mean Klark Kent...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 9 August 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I was actually kind of impressed when Sting sang "'Round About Midnight". I think I'd rather listen to him than Ocasek but he's also certainly the bigger loser.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 9 August 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, let's not jump the gun just yet. There's at least one more pair of contenders to consider...

Three men (or six, if you prefer) enter a steel cage.

None come out alive.

Well, it's an idea.
