Blue In Heaven

Had to start this after reading the Vertigo thread. I can't believe, thanks to Martian, they've finally got a mention on ILM. Without doubt the greatest Irish band of the 80s. Shane O'Neill was Iggy, Jagger and David Johansen rolled into one. Just to give a brief rundown --- their first album entitled "All The Gods Men" was produced by Martin Hannett in 1983. The single, Julie Cries, was great but the album stank really. Next up was Explicit Material in 1986, one of the great punk albums and the closest an Irish band ever got to a Never Mind The Bollox/Funhouse. Island boss Chris Blackwell produced it in Jamaica but following a disastrous US tour with The Cramps and then Art Of Noise they got dropped by Island. The video to ‘I Just Wanna’ received a lot of airplay in 1986. Their live shows around Ireland between 86-88 were incredible events especially after recruiting Ciaran Kennedy on guitar (later to form the awful Hot House Flowerish Black Velvet Band). In 1988 Blue In Heaven released thier last record, an EP called Rock n’Roll RIP, on the label Solid. It was fantastic -- included a cover of the Stooges 'Loose'. During Self Aid in 1986 (Ireland's Live Aid, a Thatcherite type benefit concert for the unemployed) Bono criticised Blue In Heaven for ruining the spirit of the day. What an asshole -- he never liked Shane O'Neill although I think it was Edge who initially had an influence in getting them the record deal with Island.

They reformed in 1990 as The Blue Angels with a more indie/Srone Roses sound and released a few singles followed by the “Coming Out Of Nowhere” album. Shane then set up a dance label for a while but now works as a web developer apparently for some native speaking site!!!

But try and track down Explicit Material in a second hand record shop. It didn’t capture the live experience but it’s one of the ultra rare great rock albums on this side of the Atlantic from the bad music years. Real iconic cover also!

I vaguely remember their (I cant remember any of their music however, never turn up on any of the Best of Irish Rock comps either) Self Aid performance. I'm curious to check them out now after reading that. What did u think of Stars of Heaven btw? My own favorite Irish band(not just the 80's either)

Michael B, Friday, 24 September 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them back in 1983. I am ashamed to report that owing to a vast quantity of Old Peculier and a girl situation, I can remember nothing about it.

Explicit Material is a superb rock album - excellent production

I was introduced to Blue In Heaven on Dave Fanning's rock show in 1985 and 1986 [you could pick up RTE 2FM in West Wales on FM] - i enjoyed their arrogant /confident sound and the mix of keyboards and guitars.

There was another band that impressed me: Connargarf [spelling?] but they never reached beyond demo level. They were similar to Blue In Heaven mixed in with early The Damned and The Skids - powerful intense rock.

Ahouse, Light a Big Fire, Backwards Into Paradise, Tuesday Blue, In Tua Nua and Cactus World News, The Fountainhead..loads of bands.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrggh, horrible horrible memories of Silent Running. And Zerra 1.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Martian - all those bands you mentioned were desperate. And the ones you mentioned, Nick! Wannabe U2 big-rock all. Also Auto Da Fe.

I have a Colenso Parade single that's OK.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That's right Martian -- a load of Irish bands got signed up in the mid 80s after the success of War/Unforgettable Fire. Most of the acts you mention got onto major labels too soon and it quickly turned sour for most of them. I guess that time was some sort of peak for Irish rock in a localised Dublin sense anyway. I'm the same age as yourself and all these bands used to play college gigs on a regular basis. Blue in Heaven have been written out of history though -- they don't even turn up on crap Irish rock compilations over here. I strated this thread to try and redress the balance somewhat!!!! I thought the Stars Of Heaven album was great at the time but haven't heard it in 15 years. In Tua Nua were shite though.

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

may the good lord save us from irish rock music. the above list of names frightens me.
although i'm prepared to believe that blue in heaven were a cut above the rest - never heard them. im not an iggy fan especially.
having said that, i definately want to hear more about the stars of heaven if Michael B is up for it.
'every other day' is the only song of theirs i have, its just about my favourite 1980s recording...

rockstar, Friday, 24 September 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Stars of Heaven supporting The Pale Fountains at some crummy place on Portobello Road. I thought they were v.good at the time, but when I finally picked up that mini-album they did of Radio Sessions, I found it lifeless and weak.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh. I mentioned Blue In Heaven last night on a U2 thread. I've had a devil of a time finding their stuff (I used to have one album of theirs on cassette...long vanished). Is there stuff available anywhere?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i would also that many of these bands were better in their early demo/ session days before they released albums:

The Fountainhead [they were more experimental and electronic]
A-House [the 85/86 tracks were far superior to their debut 88 album]
Backwards into Paradise [who later became Into Paradise]

These bands were featured in a Irish rock special by Melody Maker in February 86 - at the time Melody Maker was edited by an Irish man, Barry McIlheney.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Never heard Blue In Heaven, but a lot of these names are giving me the urge to punch the air and yodel a lot.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Having said that, I will begrudgingly admit to having a soft-spot for CWN's 'Worlds Apart' and a few other of their songs.

Argh. I just went and mentioned Blue In Heaven on another thread without knowing this one existed. Here's the thread and here's what I said:

Alex I have a question for you have you heard the first single by Blue In Heaven "Across My Heart"? I am head over heels in love with the Martin Hannett produced version. Boy do those guitars sound uncannily Joy Divisionish in their sound! But yet, even without Hannett, it's a very well-written song in and of itself. I have had the "All The God's Men" LP since it came out, and I think it's pretty excellent overall, but "Across Your Heart" is new to me, and I am in awe at it's perfection.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 25 September 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And I replied that all I've heard from Blue in Heaven is on Explicit Material.

Whoops. Never posted a link before. I'm gonna try again. Here's the thread I posted to.

Alex I tried to email you a little while ago.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 25 September 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

having said that, i definately want to hear more about the stars of heaven if Michael B is up for it.

Stars of Heaven were a country-rock band (with an ear for catchy Day Tripper style riffs and a touch of Go-Betweens charm) who were poised for greatness at the time (and oodles of critical acclaim on both sides of the pond). I'm too young to remember them when they were around but this is going on what my older brother told me. They are
also a band that never turns up on crappy Irish rock comps. They played a few gigs with Blue in Heaven as well. 'Speak Slowly' (1988) is highly rated but I prefer 'Rain on the sea' (its an Irish record I would dig out even more than 'Loveless'or Thin Lizzy), which was made up of Peel sessions and stuff that never appeared on any other albums. Someone on ILM referred to The Thrills as a Stars Of Heaven tribute band. 'One Horse Town' maybe, but their sound wasnt as Americanised and you could tell they were Irish (not because they were shit, haha) from the moment you heard Stephen Ryan sing. Lots of Irish references in their songs too. They split in '89 and from the notes in 'Unfinished Daydreaming', it seems they never really took it all that seriously (they had a track called 'Michael Stipe's Bottom') in the first place and are very self depreciating about it all. Stephen Ryan formed pub-rocky The Revenants in the early 90's with an album called 'Horse of a different colour' and then became a computer programmer although he re-formed the band and released an album two years ago. Co-songwriter Stan Erraught formed the Great Western Squares (more of an out and out country band), from what I heard of the album it's mostly Gram Parsons covers and there's a rip-roaring bluegrass versh of 'Ace of Spades'.

Fave songs:

3 O' Clock Waltz
Sacred heart hotel
Never saw you
You only say what any one could say
Wheels

Michael B, Saturday, 25 September 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It was me that called The Thrills a Stars of Heaven tribute band. What I meant was that The Thrills seem to have similar influences, but much weaker songs and execution.

Unfinished Dreaming is definitely worth hearing, the only omission I can think of is a song I remember from a Peel Session called "Paradise of Lies", I think, which was one of my favourites.

Watched these a few weeks back Martian. Absolutely delighted to see them. Such a great band. The b-side "Beating In My Head" performed on that TV show is a superb.

four weeks pass...
Okay I expect some fucking credit for the tenacity I showed in searching for this thread. Google presented me with a list of what I think may be all Classic/Dud threads on ILM. I had to read a lot of text to get here. Ned, send me $2 in the mail, you lost the bet. Just kidding.

Anyway yes, right, Blue In Heaven, I've pulled out their album PRODUCED BY THE GODLIKE MARTIN HANNETT "All The Gods' Men" oh god. I mean they were so set to be this footnote in my existence, but oh no. This album is fucking amazing in a way it never ever sounded to me in 1985 when I bought it at a chain store stupid enough to carry it. (for who would have bought it but me?) I used to only like part of the record, now I absolutely love the whole thing. Hannett's genius in every piece of groove, baby. Not to discount the band, but...

Also their first 12" "Across My Heart" also features Hannett (make sure you've got the correct version of that song though - there is a Hannett version and a non-Hannett version). Yeah I just gotta say Blue In Heaven never sounded so good.
