am listening to wendy and bonnie and vince guaraldi. any other suggestions before i break out the electronic italian horror-prog?

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe some gravenhurst...?

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the 'modapop' compilation on elefant has plenty of twee moments, not all of them are great but some are really lovely..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

doomie i think you would really like 'new buffalo', they had a single on heavenly a few years back but they've just put out an album, really up your alley i think.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

well, not looking for 'twee' music per say - just music that will capture good douglas sirk autumns or to kill a mockingbird feeling of the weather...

ps. yr cd you sent me wouldnt work jim!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

wouldn't work? that sucks. doesn't matter anyway because the album has been scrapped.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

why is that??

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the whole thing has gone sour. bit of a long story.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Call and Response 'Winds Take No Shape' (playing the Water Rats tonite, twee Londoners!).

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

awww - i love vince guaraldi.

that sucks jim. vent away young man. that is why ilx was created for.

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

mad stab in the dark doomie .. but what about the new stuff by Matt Harding (moshi moshi) tis kinda twee but not sickenly so ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What about October makes you want to listen to twee, though?

As the weather turns darker, I always want to listen to darker music, and soon I find myself hitting goth. I associate twee with more spring and summer.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

...or maybe it's that "California Dreaming" sort of thing...

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i've not really got on with matt harding. he looked like something that i might really like but no...
too beat heavy.

kate its the leaves turning brown and wearing jumpers and bad sweater coats from the seventies...!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

never thought the phrase 'beat heavy' would be linked with Matt ! ha ..
but i do indeed understand .. then how about the new bronze age fox comp for the folks that never managed to get the ebay friendly shaped vinyl ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the concretes are lovely, i recommend..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

laptop versions of prince kind of misses the point - prince is all about the lapdance!

people, something cinematic that would not go amiss in the movie the ice storm of something...

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to hear more gossip from Jim about this sourness because it will make me feel less weird about the Kissing Time turning into the indie Fleetwood Mac... ;-)

Ice Storm weather always makes me think of Broadcast.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll have to stick to light jazz. am going to put on duke ellington's such sweet thunder...

i never listened to the concretes. i should care about new music but lately i've not.

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

am just reading a reveiw of the others in the guardian guide. wtf is up with guardian journalists they all sound ilke journalists cast-offs from brit-pop's halycon days.

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

sourness is about differing levels of enthusiasm, contributions and commitment. i guess i just had my faith and expectations too darn high.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

might listen to broadcast though!

ps jim - the trick is not to give up - you should give me a mp3 and i'll shove it up on the site and get a link going for you?

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ok how should i send it to you, post a link or sommat?

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i'll make it download of the week!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, tell me about it, Jim! It's so frustrating.

(Then again, I've been burned so many times by this lately that I'm the one who's cautious and not quite as committed in this band. I've just been screwed over by bandmates who think that wallpapering their house is more important than finishing an album that now I'm all "I'd sack you and replace you with a little silver box in a heartbeat!")

Anyway, sorry to derail, but my comiserations there. I'd like a link to that MP3 if there is one...

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

loka remix of Blockheads lovely 'sunday seance' track is live orchestral jazz drum epicness.
though not twee. tis new. and would help me in any icestorm thats for sure. that or the finnish combo Husky Rescue whose new album is very mellow and chilled
ps. you the person who finds the poptones stuff @ ireallylovemusic bloody sharpish and drops em on the poptones webby corner ?

mark e (mark e), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh!

here: http://www.tugboatonline.com/tugboat%20-%20apples%20(mixed).mp3

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i can rename the file to make that link less %20ish if necessary

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

hahah - yes, i am mark e.
o.k. jim, i'll give you a hand...

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck. pressure on.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha ... no pressure from me!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh, it's pretty, Jim! Girlie harmonies and the jangle!

(How the heck do I get it onto my own computer so I don't destroy your bandwidth?)

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm just re-uploading it with an easier to handle filename so you can do a right-click-n-save

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

(Maybe I just need to learn how to use this stupid crap Windoze MP3 player.)

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

try: http://www.tugboatonline.com/tugboat_apples.mp3

thanks for all the support guys :)

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

these might be up your street doomie

linda lavin - theme from alice (1976 version)
nick garrie - close your eyes
dorothy ashby - fool on the hill
mort garson - swinging spathillyiums (sp)
tom dissevelt - orbit aurora
francois de roubaix - les amis (but, really, everything he ever did)
sun ra - sleeping beauty
random number - these streets and sadness
lonesome organist - postlude to a happy ending
kryzsztof komeda - cul de sac
terry durham - crystal telephone
nilsson - popeye (soundtrack)
john cooper clarke - a distant relation

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

though, i guess you already have many of these

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

wow. what a great top ten. do i know you? and why do i feel that i want to know you and go through yr record collection...

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

linda lavin - theme from alice (1976 version)
nick garrie - close your eyes
mort garson - swinging spathillyiums (sp)
tom dissevelt - orbit aurora
francois de roubaix - les amis (but, really, everything he ever did)
random number - these streets and sadness
terry durham - crystal telephone

not heard these - though i've been desperately trying to get the terry durham album.

what do these artists sound like?

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Tee hee hee.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

do you dare laugh at my terry durham obsession?

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hey 'unknown guy with good taste in music', could you find it in yr heart to email me at coolkidofdeath@aol.com and we could work out a trade for a copy of the terry durham album?

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'm laughing because I am logged in and can see who the "unknown guy" actually is. ;-)

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

who is he?

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

As much as I love twee music at any time of year, I still consider it June/July/August music more than October music. My favourite October album is Depeche Mode's "Black Celebration", which is hardly very twee-sounding...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually thought that The Great Doxology was YOU last night, Doomie, on this thread:

Will You Be Staying After Sunday?

Until I realized that I too was logged in and could actually see who it was. (i'm a little slow.)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ha.

i logged in spoiling the surprise.
gareth. could you make a copy of that for me?
i'll send you a copy of the soundtrack to frank perry's last summer.

doomie x (Cliff Steele), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

a copy of my recommendations?

yes, no problem, i can do you one tonite, with some other stuff

unless, you meant the terry durham lp itself? ive had real trouble getting a copy. i bought it, but it didnt come, and now i cant find another copy:(:(:(

oh wait, you have the terry durham lp already? i got confused by the post!

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, i reread, you dont have it either. damn! if, in our race to find a copy, i find one first, i will copy it straightaway

evan parker played on it, apparently!

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

where did you buy your copy - what website???

am still waiting on my copper plated intergrated circuit album that BETTER ARRIVE...

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i can put the track, crystal telephone, on a cdr, with the other stuff though, i have it on a tape someone did for me, ages ago

i bought it on ebay:(

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I still need to find a copy of the first Love Generation album on Imperial. I put on the second one and I really like it. I will transcribe the lyrics to "Fluffy Rain" in honor of this thread:

I buried myself beneath a rug
of fluffy olive green
and wondered when the rain would stop.
puddles of oil
with too many unmatched colors
were all i could see through a crack in the floor.
umbrellas closing-
not enough leak-proof rain boots
and beauty parlors closed.

grandmother baked a johnny cake
and divided evenly,
but gave two pieces to grandpa.

i can hear the bounce of a ball
and eager hands scraping up little pointed silver things.

when it rains, fairytales seem more real at bedtime
and i never watch a scary movie!

the old green rug is muddy
'cause everyone steps on it from the outside.

i'd better move.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

linda lavin - theme from alice (1976 version)

theres a wav file of it here, its a us sitcom from 1976-1982ish, linda lavin was the main actress, who sung the theme

nick garrie - close your eyes

a baroque folky softpop singer, from the late 60s. made an album jb stanislaus, but it only came out in france or spain. this track isnt on there though. the lp, had a korean cd reissue, which i also bought from some site, and ALSO never arrived, joining the list of mysterious non-arrivals

mort garson - swinging spathillyiums (sp)

this is from the mid 70s. mort garson was an arranger (glen campbell at one point i think), who also made a bunch of electronic albums, 12 about the zodiac(!), plus a requiem for satan from 1971 which is kind of a bit creepy. this is abuot 75, and is a record for helping plants grow

tom dissevelt - orbit aurora

from song of the second moon, recorded with kid baltan. he was a 50s/60s dutch electronic guy, there is a 4cd boxset coming out soon, of dutch electronic music, 1956-1966 ish

francois de roubaix - les amis (but, really, everything he ever did)

the best person ever to make music, in my view. i love roubaix, this is from the film of the same name, in 1971. there are some best ofs, but they miss out all the good stuff. his career is so varied it is difficult to pin down, but, he did a lot of french soundtracks from 1963 to his death in 76 i think

random number - these streets and sadness

grey west yorkshire rainyness, playing in london next week. moody and yorkshirey

terry durham - crystal telephone

well, if you havent heard it, its like a yorkshire serge gainsbourg, with softpop flourishes

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

other good tracks on the 2nd Love Generation: "Consiousness Expansion", The Bummer (Guide Me Home)", "W.C. Fields", "Leaves Grow Grey" (especially the lines:"once i held the warmth of you/the gentle summer breeze blew all too quickly/into icy eyes of gloom/into icy eyes of gloom/love has flown:the flapping wings of dying smiles, the noon-time chill/all say how old i've grown"), and "Epitath (A World Without Love)".

i don't know how they settled on The Love Generation as a band name. They were apparently suicidal.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

porter wagoner is good for october. i'd like to say kay adams too, but i cant find the records of hers i want

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

you actually dig the love generation? couldn't get into that at all...

ack. how long ago did you order the terry durham thing from ebay, gareth? i've made some obscure os mutantes, copper intergrated circuit, ultimate spinace and rita lee purchases and now i'm concerned!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

if you could send me a copy of the terry durham thing - that would be ace. OMG SO WORRIED THAT MY EBAY PURCHASES ARE NEVER GOING TO ARRIVE. they all had ace recommendations from each vendor. how long ago did you get the terry durham.

am listneing to cul de sac in honour of this thread.

the title track does sound ilke something from mancini's charade.

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I like their originals on the love generation album i have. their covers are the suck though.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

they are way twee though.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought the terry durham lp about 2-3 months ago, but, it was from a german seller, and the instructions were all in german, and i had to do this weird german bank transfer, and im not really sure if it went through or not, it was difficult to tell

most of the things ive bought on ebay in the last few months have either come from france or germany, so maybe that is why its been a bit hit and miss.

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

now i'm listening to Definition by Chrysalis on MGM. one of my faves. Belle & Sebastian WISH they had made this record. perfect for early autumn.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the stuff that i've ordered that is taking ages to arrive has come from america. i sent some emails out - i know that it can take up to a month for things to arrive from america. i think i have ebay trust issues.

order the libra - schock soundtrack from italy and that arrived no problem.

scott, i was never able to look past the album cover with regards to the love generation!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

scott, can you send me a mp3 of the definitions to doompatrol@gmail.com

i want to hear it!

i'll send anyone who wants to hear it - an mp3 of a guitar beat group doing a surf instrument of rock'n'roll star by the byrds.

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a 4cd boxset coming out soon, of dutch electronic music, 1956-1966 ish

do you have any more info on this?

pfeffernuesse (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

what site never send the nick stuff, gareth? want to know what to avoid.

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

hey scott, gareth, any thoughts on gal costa? i got her album a few days ago and it is so acid-drenched you can feel the psychedelia coming off of the needle.

that and the moonflowers whom i never thought got their due. really, it is the sister group to the happy mondays.

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

gal costa is wonderful. i only have one album of hers but i always meant to check out more.

pfeffernuesse (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

gal costa's website has the dreamiest intro:

http://www.galcosta.com.br/

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never heard a psych album by her though. did she make it with other brasilpsych people?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the dissevelt release is at http://www.bastamusic.com/scripts/catalogus.cgi?cat_no=71828443

ive only heard bits of gal costa, its ok, but i need to hear more. im not that into mutantes or veloso, i've always preferred the marcos valle style, from that time

i heard the moonflowers are having all their stuff reissued? i have the get higher 12" somewhere, i didnt really think that much of it (was expecing a butthole surfers/happy mondays hybrid, but it sounded a bit limp to me), i think flowered up were the only band to even think about being a sister band to happy mondays, and even they were some way short (though, of course, happy mondays are pretty much unrivalled)

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

anita harris "london life" is poss. good twee october music.

pfeffernuesse (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

re: the nick garrie, cant remember which site it was, i'll have a trawl through my mails though, itll be in there somewhere. they didnt charge me, just wrote me a mail saying it was out of stock and they would have to get some more from korea, but i never heard from them again

i tried to buy wolfgang dauners oimels, but that was out of stock too. that was from that place in highgate

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, the only thing i have bought with anything approaching success was a 1940 childrens annual and a £1 pedometer, thuogh i am hoping to have a little bit more luck with this nice silk eye mask i have just seen

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that is to say, the only thing recently

i got some good porter wagoner and psylocibin records earlier in the month though

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

also, satie's "nocturne III"

pfeffernuesse (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

gal costa's stuff is worthwhile. i don't know much of the history. i got one album from a recommendation of someone whose musical tastes i am obssessed with. moonflowers - am suprrised that you've not fallen in love. the album is amazing. flowered up - weekender over the album anyday.

have you guys heard of gravenhurst? just finished an email interview with them its amazing. he does this really cool murder ballad version of husker du's dianne.

i know nobody likes the earlies but check out their mixes online - you can't fault their tastes in music. i've put up three at www.poptones.co.uk - do a search and find on earlies. nice stuff.

ps sophei just bought a pedometer today...!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ps - nice on the satie recommendation - will listen to that tonight after the movies!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i walked 24000 steps at work the other day, perhaps there should be a pedometer thread!

if you are interested in francois de roubaix, you might want to check this site out

http://www.norfolkwindmills.com/roubaix/roubaix.html

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

gareth you are my god.
going to download - hey could i write something and then link it up on poptones.co.uk? would that be cool? just trying to get the libertines kids into something a little bit more different.

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Try pr0n. That's the only thing they respond to.

No, seriously! Want to get the Libertines kids into a band? Write some slash involving said band.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

not true! a bunch of them are now cherrystones fans...!

doomie x, Monday, 4 October 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

ha-HEM. Forget I said that.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

by all means go ahead, ive been trying to get people into francois de roubaix for years!

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

who is le gobbo?

tremendoidmandel, Monday, 4 October 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

tom dissevelt - orbit aurora

from song of the second moon, recorded with kid baltan. he was a 50s/60s dutch electronic guy, there is a 4cd boxset coming out soon, of dutch electronic music, 1956-1966 ish

it's out! it is super dupes.

the electrosoniks 'electronic music'

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the new july skies cd 'the english cold' is very beautiful, something like 'scenes from the south island' only more damp and brittle. it's the next best thing to listening to ian masters.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, I have to get that box set. I heard some Kid Baltan/ Tom Dissevelt stuff a lot as a kid, and have only now found out who did it and what it's called.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, that's nice:

ihttp://home.wanadoo.nl/tazelaar/images/pe-voorkant.jpg

pfeffernuesse (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know too many people who don't have to get that box set

(Jon L), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Neanderthal Man, Hotlegs

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks gareth,

will do...

am listening to james yorkston and the atheletes though truth be told it is a little too much like a john renbourne/burt jansch record for me to truly enjoy it.

doomie x, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you know that album at first did little for me (aint really my kinda thing), but aftger a few plays it kinda got under my skin, in a good way.
though i would have liked a little more Four Tet twists in the sonics .. his presence is hardly noticeable ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

doomie does my link work at your end? just wondering, no hassle..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i think there might be a problem linking my page, as, 16 mp3s linked by a major site, will mean huge bandwidth for the server, and probably the site closing temporarily (up to now, its just been people in dribs and drabs). i think im going to have to make it just one mp3, and then change it week by week or something, hopefully then it will still fall under the radar. or, i'll look at putting them on a server where there are no real bandwidth restrictions.

did you like the roubaix tracks?

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry dudes,

i'm having a poptones.co.uk crisis.

well get around to all this very soon...

ps. gareth, check out the magic numbers. they are a new band taht sound like mamas and the papas.

doomie x, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)
