Musicians crashing on your couch

This friend of mine told me last night, "Hey I met (artist) in Berlin and we became buddies. And (wtf) just emailed me saying they might be coming through L.A. and asked if they could stay with me. I have nowhere for (gah) to crash!" I volunteered my couch and this crashing might be happening soon.

Is this a bad idea? Are musicians prone to thievery of music and DVDs?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

As long as it isn't Momus.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

you might actually get music given to you

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I have never heard music by this person, because it doesn't seem like my bag. Should I investigate and educate myself?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Are musicians prone to thievery of music and DVDs?

that depends. will they be bringing their girlfriend winona ryder with them?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

are they large and tattooed or small and fey? if the former: go for it, it'll rock. if the latter: tell 'em to fuck off and get a hotel.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

this person is female also

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

It's not a white couch, is it?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

zing!

Name of a variant of the phenomemon under discussion: "couch-surfing" or "doing the couch circuit."

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I need to get some sheets for that damn thing

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

what i said still stands. even more so, in fact.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

There is also this joke.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I think you're safe. Musicians only steal food, but only after you say, "You hungry? The fridge is over there, have as much as you want. No, I mean it," when you don't really mean it because you unknowingly have grossly underestimated the amount of food one musician on tour can go through in one night.

mat, Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

You might want to worry about what "crashing" might lead to. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, so please please please read the following:

Long ago, and, oh, so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show.
Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear, but you're not really here.
It's just the radio.

Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby?
You said you'd be coming back this way again baby.
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby.
I love you, I really do.

Loneliness is such a sad affair, and I can hardly wait to be with you again.
What to say, to make you come again?
Come back to me again, and play your sad guitar.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Beautiful. But that's the slightly cleaned up Carpenter's version, innit? But I guess that was the hit so it's OK.

Yeah, unless it's Keith Moon, musicians are usually pretty well-behaved. It's only when you share some sort of commitment, like for instance paying rent, that things start to get weird.

Which is what you will have in the bottom of your shower after your guest is there is few days, so remember to clear it away and unblock the drain!

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Musicians have started showering again? Someone alert Rolling Stone: Grunge Is Dead!

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

no, no, no, no, no. they're just hanging out in there.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

You wander around on your own little cloud
When you don't see the why or the wherefore
You walk out on me when we both disagree
'Cause to reason is not what you care for
I've heard it all a million times before
Take off your coat, my love, and close the door
CHORUS:
Don't sleep in the shower, Connor
Don't stand in the pouring rain
Don't sleep in the shower, Connor
The night is long
Forget your foolish pride
Nothing is wrong
Now, you're beside me again
You try to be smart then you take it to heart
'Cause it hurts when your ego is deflated
You don't realize that it's all compromise
And the problems are so overrated
Goodbye means nothing when it's all for show
So, why pretend you've somewhere else to go?
CHORUS
(repeat and fade out)

Where are the Gear's couch jokes??

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Maybe this should be linked to on ILE to allow other people to make jokes about Gear's couch?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I heard a rumour years ago about Bad Brains stealing a fan's stereo equipment or something. No clue about the truth/untruth of that.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

i paid something like $13.99, plus tax, for a broken social scene CD, which pretty much amounts to them stealing my money.

I prefer this Couch

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

all I will say is she's had a thread about her on ILX! some people expressed dislike of her music on that thread. some people, on the other hand, liked her music. Some people were ambivalent. Some had not heard her music.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

so courtney love's staying on your couch, huh?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

the german couch is so much better gygax

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

the german couch had 2 good songs on record (but were admittedly 1000x better live).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Back when I let bands to stay with me, I was very picky about who was allowed over. It only took one bad experience - I was basically pressured into letting this one band stay at my apt., and spent two miserable days dealing with some very high-maintenance people, not to mention one pissed-off roommate. After that, only people whom I either a) already knew or b) could count on to be good houseguests could stay over. I never got any "luckier" than a free CD or T-shirt.

mike a, Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and no thievery. Most touring bands were more interested in a shower and some beer.

During the short period I was in a touring band, I made a point of being as pleasant and low-maintenance as possible. More than once, I knew that I was putting out hapless roommates who had no idea that guests were staying over. You never knew whether things would get awkward or not. I don't know how touring bands deal - for months on end- with the social dynamic of staying at people's houses. If I was ever in a touring band again, I'd insist on motels at least twice a week.

mike a, Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

you'd insist to who? you fancy guys with your 'management' and 'performance fees'

If I was ever in a touring band again, I'd insist on motels at least twice a week.

Last time I was in a touring band one of my bandmates insisted on that shit until the rest of the band insisted it come out of his cut of the show earnings.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

My band stayed at girl's house in New Orleans once. 8 dudes for 4 days. It's been strictly hotels ever since.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

(not like we ever go on tour for longer than a week though)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

is it ellen alien?

This was my thought, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

As long as it isn't Momus.
This joke seems to show lack of familiarity with the realities, as Momus probably is the kind of guy you actually would want to stay. (But with the babies all rooms are full, so sorry Nick!)

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Is it Nellie McKay?

major jingleberries (jingleberries), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

Not Ellen Allien because Gear said he has Berlinette on so who up in this bitch can recommend some good Ellen Allien-ish stuff?

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I bet it's Alizee.

is this a subtle hint at a tawdry 4-some or something?

chris andrews (fraew), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

why does this board always slow to a grind after a picture of a woman is posted?

chris andrews (fraew), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

people are always nice when they stay at my house, and they really appreciate POTATOES. they have been known to bring me forties or weed.

Most salacious.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

Not on my couch.
Young men, when you're on the road, you can do as you please, but when you're on my couch you'll abide by my rules.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 7 January 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

i can't think of a single bad experience with any musician who's crashed where i've lived, though bob weston did tell me and my roommate that we had the "dirtiest dorm room i've ever seen" (was my roommate's fault).

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 January 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

The two bands that I've put up have both been impeccably behaved young men. Also, in my experience, musicians are more likely to leave stuff behind than take it with them.

Ben Dot (1977), Friday, 7 January 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

as someone who books shows, i always have bands staying over at my place. however, im fairly picky about them -- if i dont think they're nice people to begin with, i wont bother asking.

to be honest, ive yet to run into a problem [aside from creeper lagoon]. when i lived in a house with other people, i always made sure my roommates were OK with it. now i live alone, so sometimes the company is nice.

either way, i do what i can to treat the bands kindly. i have a fairly standard breakfast of bagels, fruit, coffee, tea & OJ available.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 7 January 2005 05:18 (twenty years ago)

she's not coming at the time she was going to come originally, so there will be no $c0wt n!b13++ in my apt.

JoeStork, Monday, 9 May 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

god, so many bands have stayed with me that i kind of don't really know what to think of this thread. all of them were great houseguests, and even if things were left messy sometimes, the party that led to that mess was always excellent. (i'm looking towards you, Excepter and GGD).

Superchunk slept in my living room one night in the early 90s, but they were friends of my roommate--very nice people!
