Listened to that at the listening station at gramaphone the other day. Assumed it was on Trax, but its actually a souljazz comp isnt it? Looks (and sounded) great.

A1. MAURICE This Is Acid
-Is this the S&T mix, or the K&T mix. More samples, or more 303?

A2. THE SWEAT BOYZ Do You Want To Perculate?
-Never heard this, but I presume it's a spinoff of Cajmere's Percolator. Good?

B1. VIRGO Go Wild Rhythm Track
-Never heard of this. What's it like?

B2. MR FINGERS Beyond The Clouds
-Ahh, this get's eclipsed sometimes by the other 2 songs from that 12". Excellent, excellent track!

C1. TYREE Acid Crash
- Good track, but any in the "Clash/Crash" series will be eclipsed by Original Video Clash

C2. PHUTURE Phuture Jacks
-Wow, another often overlooked b-side.

D1. FRESH Dum Dum Part Two
D2. ROY DAVIS JNR Acid Bass
-I never heard either of these. Assesment?

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

How many good Mr Fingers tracks are there? Enough for an entire good record?

a real bear behind the microphone (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

woops, more on the 2nd disc...

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

* sleezy d (marshall jefferson) - i've lost control
-Goddamned monster this one is!

* virgo four - take me higher
* dj pierre - box energy
-the name rings a bell...I need to look at my collection

* lil louis - video clash
-Ahh, so they did include it. This is so monumentally different from everything of the era! Incredible.

* tyree - acid over
-Was this song big? I have it, and like it, but was never blown away by it.

* green velvet (cajmere) - explorer
-God, I haven't heard this in so long that I've forgotten what it sounds like...

* two of a kind - like this
-Is this the Chip E song under a different name? Is it based on ESG's Moody?

* armando - downfall
-Another one that rings a bell, but doesn't jog my memory.

* phuture - acid tracks
-The one that started it all...I could only WISH that it was the original verision that Ron Hardy was playing on reel-to-reel in 85/86, instead of the Marshall Jefferson spearheaded remake. Great regradless!!!

Enough good Mr. Fingers and Fingers Inc. to do like maybe a double disc anthology. He did release an album, although much of it was old compiled singles.

Granted, Fingers Inc. is more vocal, and Mr. Fingers is more "deep"/pseudo-Acid. He only did one full on 303 assault that I can think of though (Acid Attack).

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Virgo Go Wild was Marshall Jefferson's first foray onto vinyl. Sounds like a hot, stoned afternoon with a 808 and synth to me.

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there is a GREAT double disc anthology of Fingers/Fingers Inc stuff!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Two of a Kind "Like This" is indeed based on ESG inna acid stylee

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Gimme.

Speaking of Chip E, did anyone see Usual Suspects...the documentary he made of the early 80's Chocago? I went to the screening here in NYC, but the DVD projector fucked up after 10 minutes or so, killing the whole presentation.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there is a GREAT double disc anthology of Fingers/Fingers Inc stuff!

Wow, who put this out? And when?

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

And when are we all getting copies?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

It's been out for ages. It's called Classic Fingers and actually I think there are a couple of different tracklists.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit, his Gherkin Jerks alias...I had forgotten that one!

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

It has some weird ommissions (no "Can U Feel It?" and "Washing Machine"?) but since those are the easiest to find tracks. . .

Here is a single disc collection too:

waiting patiently for Soul Jazz to do a Detroit techno comp like this one...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Not that this is a snarky response...more like 'find some entertainment in these until Soul Jazz releases what you like':

Definitive Techno Compilations (old and new)
detroit techno compilations - S and D

Personally, I thought the TIMELESS mix that Juan Atkins did of Metroplex catalog was nice.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i mean, i could do a good detroit techno comp. i actually just really love Soul Jazz's visual design and liner-note treatments of genres.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I just got this. And it is good. This is kind of off topic but can anyone comment on the Nicky Siano Gallery comp that Soul Jazz put out? Worth getting?
