Your "Top 10 Albums of All Time" List

I've been thinking this over for months now, slowly compiling my top 10 albums of all time (at this point). I am 23 years old and the list has obviously changed many times since I began listening to "No Doubt" when I was younger.

It's no longer on the list, by the way.

Anyway, as a musician myself, I find that the albums I identify most with / enjoy the most are ones that usually share my appreciation for certain song structures, instruments, atmosphere, etc.

In short, a lot of my favourite albums are ones that I wish I'd made :?

Ao feel free to add your list. Maybe some of you have remarkably similar lists and the rest of us can benefit by checking out those bands.

So without further adue, and in no particular order -

1) The Pretty Things - Parachute (1970)

All over the map, but still cohesive. An awesomely Beatleish album which flows together very well. The first 3 songs alone are mindblowing.

2) Family Tree - Miss Butters (1968)

Great psych-pop concept album that few have heard of. The band never made another album, but this one is so good, they didn't really need too.

3) Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes (1968)

Awesome Brazilian Psych-Pop, a clear influence on Beck, among others. The sheer enthusiasm and imagination on display in this album is astonishing.

4) The Kinks - Arthur (1969)

The Best album from my favourite band, though I also reccomend all their other albums, this one just rocks hard and is more consistant than "Village Green" (which is also great, but that "Monica" song could go).

5) Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill (2004)

Even though I'd been listening to him since "Either/Or", the wait for this one really hammered home the emotional attatchment to it. Let's just say, my jaw dropped the first time I heard the studio version of "King's Crossing".

6) The Offspring - Ignition (1993)

Some people don't even realise that Offspring had TWO albums before "Smash", let alone one, but "Ignition" is an album that appeals to me far more than "Smash" (not to bash smash or anything). It's just a lot more raw, and "Dirty Magic" is a nice departure for them, one of my favourites.

7) Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk (1967)

I'm still not a big fan of "Trout Mask Replica" or any of his completely off the wall stuff, but I am a fan of the Captain (and a big fan of the similarily voiced "Man Man"). This album is so good. It features Ry Cooder on guitar, and is one of the best blues albums I've ever heard.

8) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (1975)

Do I really need to describe this one ? "The Wall" has too many misfires and "Dark Side of the Moon" doesn't appeal to me as much as this one does. Just a knockout album, all in all.

9) The Ramones - Pleasent Dreams (1981)

The Ramones are one of my favourite bands, but this catchy as hell, largely overlooked gem is definitely my favourite complete album of theirs. It maintains the 60's production of the Phil Spector produced "End of the Century", but to much better use here than on that album. Also, "It's Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)" is easily one of their best songs ever.

10) Saves the Day - Stay What You Are (2001)

Well, what can I say ? I'm not a fan of emo or pretty much any "Pop Punk" crap, but there's something very personal and very catchy about this album, I just cam't turn my nose up at it. First of all, the musicians are brilliant (particularily the bassist and lead guitarist), the lyrics are awesomely dark and the melodies / harmonies / songs are just brilliantly catchy. This is a very Beatleish pop/punk album, and I highly reccomend it. And yeah, his voice takes some getting used to, but damn is it ever good.

Runner Ups -

Tiny Tim - God Bless Tiny Tim
The Dead Boys - Young, Loud and Snotty
The Eels - Daisies of the Galaxy
Boards of Canada - Twoism
Elliott Smith - Figure 8

So there you have it. Looking forward to see some of yours.

Erock Lazron, I don't get why a Beatles album isn't your fvorite ever album, since you describe your favorite album as "Beatlesish," or why a Kinks album isn't your favorite album, since you say they're your favorite band. Top ten favorite albums lists are not trifles.

vomit redux, Sunday, 8 January 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

While I love all of the Beatles records, they've just become so ingrained in my musical psyche that I can rarely listen to complete albums by them anymore. I prefer making comps of their less heard tracks instead.

And although the Kinks are my favourite band. "Arthur" isn't my favourite album, but it's my favourite Kinks album and one of my favourite albums. I like some "albums" by "Bands" that I don't consistantly like, but I love those albums AS albums. For example, I prefer "Family Tree - Miss Butters" to "Arthur" because they only ever released one album, and it really appeals to me, moreso than "Arthur" does.

But hey, I love more Kinks albums than any other band's albums, so I have no regrets.

Erock seems to like a lot of great music. The only thing I really, really dislike about that Top 10 is having a Captain Beefheart in it. That is plain unforgivable. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

Ohhhh man, you gotta hear "Safe As Milk" by him though. Very unlike his other albums (as in, it's actually a blues album, not an insane, off the wall romp).

Really, even if you're just listening to it for Ry Cooder's guitar work it's worthwhile.

Erock LAzron, Monday, 9 January 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

The top 10 I'd give you now is probably different from what it would have been if you had asked me this morning. And I basically never post here anyway. But for what it's worth, here you go:

Black Flag - Damaged
Brainiac - Hissing Prigs in Static Couture
Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician
Dismemberment Plan - ...Is Terrified
Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
Jesus Lizard - Goat
Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Pussy Galore - Groovy Hate Fuck
Sonic Youth - Sister

Schadenfreude (Schade), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

Ohhhh man, you gotta hear "Safe As Milk" by him though. Very unlike his other albums

I agree it isn't quite as insufferable as "Trout Mask Replica", but it is still way too based in the blues.

1. Coldplay - X&Y

I think if you want to keep the attention of the reader, you might want to start with number ten and then count down until one. Unless you'd put Radiohead at number ten.

My top ten would probably include No New York, Fleetwood Mac, Joni M, dEUS and probably Neutral Milk Hotel. Only, i don't like doing lists.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

Thats what I don't understand about Joanna. How can people describe her with such vividly bad descriptions yet still like her music?
-- Stephen C (qwerty733...), January 11th, 2006 7:57 PM.

A Bob Dylan fan once described him (accurately) as a tone-deaf railroad man disemboweling a guitar. Doesn't mean he's terrible, rather he overcomes deficient characteristics through sheer force of talent. A lot of talented people don't kowtow to the world's sense of style, they go their own way and the world follows.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 15 January 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

i just don't got the passion for twelve inch singles. maybe when i get bored with 7" singles.

Well, for hip-hop and disco of that period, you usually don't have much of a choice. And for DJing, 12" sound way better, and have bigger pictures.

anyway, a quick go at my top 10 albums of all time:

Van Morrison-Astral Weeks
Beach Boys-Pet Sounds
The Zombies-Begin Here
Scott Walker-Scott 3
Gene Clark-White Light
Slapp Happy-Acnalbasac Noom
Brian Eno-Taking Tiger Mountain
Roxy Music-Avalon
New Order-Substance
The Durutti Column-Another Setting

That is me really trying to be honest with myself. So much for being all about the punk, post-punk, new wave, disco etc. If I was deserted on an island, that's what I'd have. Of course I'd also have my top 10 7"s, which would cover more punk, post-punk, pop etc, and my top 10 12"s, which would scratch my dance itch. Then I'd be good.

and to the original poster...Monica is a GREAT song!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 15 January 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

Top 11 Favorite Albums - not in order of preference

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and Sinner Lady
Raekwon & Ghostface Killah - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
The Stooges - Fun House
The Velvet Underground - White Light White Heat
Clifford Brown & Max Roach - Study in Brown
Nas - Illmatic
The Dramatics - Whatcha See it Whatcha Get
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Smif n Wessun - Dah Shinin'
Willie Hutch - Fully Exposed
Sunn O))) - 00 Void

Naturally my list is subject to change depending on mood, weather, quality of sensi, etc. I could easily name 90 more. And I feel like I really slighted the heavier bands I love, like Carcass, Grief, Sleep, Earth, etc.

Stephen Niez, Sunday, 15 January 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

10 that spring to mind, because I can't be bothered working this out. This would be close, but not quite the real top ten, more or less in order:
Pulp - Different Class
Massive Attack - Blue Lines
Jerry Lee Lewis - Live At The Star Club
ABC - Lexicon Of Love
Mott the Hoople - Mott
Daphne & Celeste - We Didn't Say That!
Underworld - Everything, Everything
Culture - Two Sevens Clash
Genius/GZA - Liquid Swords
Trammps - The Legendary Zing Album

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 January 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, "Liquid Swords" kicks ass.

And "Monica" is okay, but compared to the rest of the (wicked) record, it's the worst song, in my opinion. Or just "not as good".

I prefer "Wicked Annabella", "Big Sky" and "Village Green", personally.

Erock LAzron, Monday, 16 January 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

Monica's better then that twee song about a cat!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 16 January 2006 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

Liquid Swords almost made the cut for my list but I prefer Cuban Linx today. It's definitely one of the most dense, layered rap albums I can think of...Martin Skid I see your email is lonewolf.cub, or something - did you see the movies before you heard the album?

Stephen Niez, Monday, 16 January 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

No, but I was a huge fan of the comics (where it all started) before I knew there were movies, before the Wu started even. Still am. My jaw dropped when I heard the samples on this album.

I'm actually not sure that's a top ten album for me, or even my favourite hip hop album, but it's thereabouts. There are even a couple of other Wu albums I love about as much - 36 Chambers, Cuban Linx, just about any of Ghostface's.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and Sinner Lady

One of my faves as well, it doesn't get mentioned as often as it should.

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

How dare you speak ill of "Phenomenal Cat" ?! The title alone is awesomeley outrageous.

Erock LAzron, Monday, 16 January 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

This thread has made the full circle from random topic > pretentious joking > sincere discussion > and back again

Yeah, and now it's 3 posts away from the triple digits !

Ain't music wonderful

-- Erock LAzron (erockzombi...), January 16th, 2006.

"phenomenal cat" is DEFINITELY the worst song on VGPS! it's like "the gnome" from the first pink floyd album, except 10X as cringeworthy.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Without too much thought (ie., probably no overlap with the last time I made this list):

Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)
Missy Elliott - The Cookbook
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream
Frederic Chopin - 24 Preludes (Op. 28) (Martha Argerich)
L'Ensemble Pierre Labbe - Risque et Pendule
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
Dog Faced Hermans - Those Deep Buds

Dog Faced Hermans - Those Deep Buds

I'd go with Hum Of Life but it's great to see DFH on anybody's list!

There, 100.

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

Well done everyone

Erock LAzron, Wednesday, 18 January 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

based on what's been on my player most for the past couple of years:

The Action - The Ultimate Action
The Libertines - Up the Bracket
The Dream Syndicate - The Days of Wine and Roses
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
The Prisoners - The Last Fourfathers
The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
Vic Godard and Subway Sect - A Retrospective 1977-1981
The White Stripes - Elephant
Pete Doherty - The Freewheelin' Pete Doherty
Kate Bush - The Hounds of Love

dr x o'skeleton, Wednesday, 18 January 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

That first Libertines record is so good. Way better than the second one and the Babyshambles albums, not that they're bad, just not as good.

And I got "Elephant" on red and white vinyl. Such a good purchase.

Erock Lazron, Wednesday, 18 January 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Taking a shot at this:

Michael Jackson - Off The Wall/Thriller
Cornelius - Fantasma
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Mekon - Welcome To Tackletown
De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead
Plus-Tech Squueze Box - Cartooom!
Gravediggaz - Niggamortis
Blur - Parklife
The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole
The Aprils - Pan-da

And it seems not much changed after 1998, but the 3 latest entries all hail from Tokyo.

BARMS, Thursday, 19 January 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I oughta be working but let's give this a shot.

Boo Radleys - Giant Steps
Blur - Parklife
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
Autechre - LP5
Beach Boys - Smiley Smile
Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Daft Punk - Discovery
Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Plaid - Double Figure

God, it looks like all I listen to is twee pop and IDM.

Louis Giomblechett and his kerayzy friends (dog latin), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

That Belle and Sebastian album is awesome. A total "modern day Beatles Album", production wise anyway.

And "Discovery" is another modern classic. Actually, I have those two albums on LP too. And Cd. And all the 7' singles off "waitress". Man, I really pumped alot of money into that portion of their career.

Erock LAzron, Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

Daaamn, I forgot about this thread.

Good times

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Sunday, 1 October 2006 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

So, Erock, your opinions/fave albums changed yet?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 1 October 2006 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

Good question

That's probably about right, but I'll have to consider it carefully and see which albums will make the 1 year cut

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Monday, 2 October 2006 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

I actually carry this list around in my wallet:

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

oh whatever...
what does that mean? my choices are too easy, too obvious? or that my taste in music gives one the impression that i am a prepubescent?

Destroy A. Monsters (Destroy A. Monsters), Monday, 2 October 2006 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, Pleasant, that I got a little testy there... I guess I'm a little out of my depth here. I have about a hundred something CDs but I usually buy what I hear is good. I'm kind of a lo-fi garage-rock junkie (I would have also put Dirtbombs on there if I had thought of it) but there's always sort of a rock-crit filter there.

Though I thought Pacer was sort of a daring choice.

George Lochinski (Destroy A. Monsters), Monday, 2 October 2006 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

Elliott Smith's "ZO" is working its way up to the 10, but can it de-throne "Basement" ?

We'll find out

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

i think my list changes second-ly

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

i've been a music nerd for about 8 years and i don't think I've ever thunk up a top 10 albums list. here goes.

01. Pink Floyd - Animals
Every heard "Dogs?" Where in the name of everything holy did David Gilmour find that opening chord progression? How did he come up with that solo? Before I bought this I'd never have thought that Pink Floyd could outdo _Wish You Were Here_. Imagine my surprise. I'm sure it helped that I'd read Orwell and made him a part of my worldview. But it'd all be for naught without the tremendous music. The best parts remind me of a very good SNES soundtrack.

02. The Beatles - The White Album
I'd heard a lot of the individual songs before purchasing the album, but you have to hear the whole album to hear just how far ahead of their time the Beatles were. Sidenote: Initially, I found "Revolution #9" to be unlistenable - now it's one of the highlights of the album.

03. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Willy & The Poorboys

04. Genesis - Nursery Cryme
A great album, although here it's kind of a stand-in for prog as a whole. Took some getting used to; I was initially frustrated by the fact that the most addictive phrases were only played once and then forgotten. I soon learned to remedy this problem by putting the album on endless repeat.

05. De La Soul - The Grind Date

06. Soundgarden - Superunkown
Usually classified as "grunge," it's an open secret that this is 1. one of the best psychedelic records ever and 2. the greatest tribute to Black Sabbath ever.

07. Dismemberment Plan, The - Emergency & I
I discovered these guys through a CMJ New Music sampler. At the time I was strictly into classic rock, and this number was an authentic mind-blower. It sounded so wrong, and yet so right.

08. Radiohead - Kid A
I can remember my excitement upon purchasing this album. I was expecting OK Computer Part 2. Needless to say, I was quite dissapointed, but I gave it a few more spins and the rest is history.

09. XTC - Drums & Wires

10. Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage Animation0
This sounds exactly like a collection of 1966/67 beatles outtakes, interspersed with a bunch of awesome sound collages.

11. V/A - Wanted! The Outlaws

12. Collective Soul - _Hints, Allegations & Things Left Unsaid_
Yeah, I know it's a boring pick. It seems like everybody owns/has owned a Collective Soul record. It's overproduced, it's cold and calculated, etc. But there's no getting past the immediacy of the hooks, and the simple truthfulness of the lyrics. I'll never get tired of this.

13. Jimmy Eat World - _The Singles_
Another CMJ sampler discovery. They sounded very different at this time. It's almost like an X-ray of stereotypical emo, a straight shot of raging but indeterminate guitar and mournful, obscure lyrics. Their succeeding output would descend into radio crapland, (insofar that the Red Hot Chili Peppers deigned to plagiarize them) but I'll stand by this album til the day I die.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

Here's the albums mentioned upthread that almost made my list (or could make it at a later date):

blue cheer - vincebus eruptum

skip spence - oar

weirdly, the loose voice/bass demos may be the strongest and most affecting. i'm also a big fan of the _more oar_ tribute.

ghostface - supreme clientele
sly & the family stone - stand!
animal collective - sung tongs
beach boys - pet sounds

raekwon - only built 4 cuban linx
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
i can't get over the solos. reminds me of a sober hendrix.
Edward III OTM for noting that this album was almost entirely recorded live, without overdubs.

Nick Drake - Pink Moon
I first noticed this album when it was mentioned in a usenet thread, as one of the most darkest albums of all time. "Ha," thought I, "they're only saying that because he offed himself soon afterwards." How wrong I was. Nick Drake could be alive, well, and raking in millions and this album would lose none of it's unyielding, darkly beautiful menace.

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
The second LZ album that I bothered to physically purchase, after LZIV. I know it's an odds and sods collection, but it seems to work so well as a whole, except for "Kashmir" which I've never cared for (even the Puff Daddy version seemd like an improvement).
