yes.

shredding repis on the gnar gnar rad (chaki), Sunday, 9 April 2006 08:35 (twenty years ago)

Aside from CK's total songwriting superoverlord POWER & Tapestry's being utterly fucking iconic and great, and besides her having written "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" which is one of the greatest songs of all time omg I cannot handle the greatness, no, you're not missing anything

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 9 April 2006 08:37 (twenty years ago)

dud

gear (gear), Sunday, 9 April 2006 08:39 (twenty years ago)

total fucking classic

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 9 April 2006 08:45 (twenty years ago)

i'm referring to her own albums as opposed to her obviously at times damn good songwriting efforts for other people

toe-foo (toe-foo), Sunday, 9 April 2006 09:25 (twenty years ago)

"I Feel the Earth Move" Classic

gooblar (gooblar), Sunday, 9 April 2006 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Classic, but a bit too loaded with memory associations for me to easily listen to any more.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 9 April 2006 10:58 (twenty years ago)

1958 - 1974 = classic

1974 - present = dud

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Sunday, 9 April 2006 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Growing up I kept confusing her with Carly Simon (who my mom adores).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 April 2006 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I saw a Carole King concert on PBS a couple of years ago (it was from that same year; '03 or thereabouts) and I was quite impressed. Back to Canaan was especially moving, though the studio version of that song is kinda meh.

"And it's been so looong..."

Only Pick One: Really Rosie Soundtrack

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 April 2006 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Random thoughts:

It may sound ridiculous, but CK never wrote anything as affecting as "God Give Me Strength" from the fictional biopic "Grace of my Heart" about CK. It's a travesty that Elvis Costello sang the soundtrack version.

Also, in old video clips from the '70s, CK always makes me think of a school librarian trying to get funky.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Sunday, 9 April 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Go out of your way to search for: "Road to Nowhere" (totally embittered mid-60's break-up song that's like Nico-led VU).

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 9 April 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Wow, yer right, it really does sound ridiculous.

I do prefer Martika's version of "I Feel the Earth Move." Really.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 9 April 2006 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I like Tapestry.

DUD

Ha, me too. I think that might be why I didn't think I liked Carol King.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 9 April 2006 14:48 (twenty years ago)

My mom loves'em both too. Did Carly Simon ever record an album as good as Tapestry though?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 9 April 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

classic writing in the 60s
dudish as solo performer (Yeah, Tapestry is huge, but I never need to listen to it again)

timmy tannin (pompous), Sunday, 9 April 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

So FUCKING Far Away, ppl

Jimmy Mod: My theme is DEATH (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Sunday, 9 April 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah Jimmy wow, good call - I'm in a sorta fragile state at the moment and even thinking of the "doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?" line is fucking me up something fierce - that's Tapestry's strength to me, that the songs are as much cues for an internal soundtrack as they are things to be heard

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 9 April 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I remember one young sister with rainbows in her eyes
Standing on a corner with the afternoon's supply
She spoke of other places, perhaps a better road
Then she asked if I could tell her where they kept the mother lode

Like a night this side of dying
Her day's inside the dropper on the shelf
When she hears her lifeline crying
Not a thing you say can stop her
When she just can't stop herself

I remember that July, the panic and the heat
The savage shine of summer, the strychnine in the street
The way they sold each other for a favor in glassine
The best of friends sold brothers for a dime of quinine dreams

Like a night this side of dying
Her day's inside the dropper on the shelf
Like the shelter she's been buying
Not a thing I've got can save her
When she just can't save herself
She just can't save herself

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

um, not that i'm trying to bum you out, thomas. i was just thinking of this song.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

So does anyone own the post-Tapestry albums?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

anyone who has never heard roberta flack do will you love me tomorrow should get a copy pronto. quiet fire is one of the most beautiful albums ever made.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:11 (twenty years ago)

scott I've been listening to that shit all year, it's like you're readin' my mind! but the "Blue Light In A Something Something" album is the Roberta Flack stuff that's slaying me right now..."Why Don't You Move In With Me?" is just so gorgeous.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

classic for the early stuff and she has a great voice..

more recently, I get the Maurice Sendak songs stuck in my head every once in awhile. "A - Alligators All Around" and "I Don't Care"

Dave AKA Dave (dave225.3), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Never liked her voice that much, but the songs are certainly great enough. "You've Got a Friend" sounded better when James Taylor performed it though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 9 April 2006 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Spaceship Races! First song off her first solo album....classic jam, almost sounds like Crazy Horse or something. and that album (Writer) also has No Easy Way Down, a perfect mid tempo soul song, amongst her greatest, I think.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 10 April 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

I listened to Tapestry this past week and only skipped a couple of songs. Where You Lead and something else. I can't stand the guitar work on most of the album either. But I wouldn't criticize her voice too harshly. Makes her sound like a regular person which is why I'll take her version of You've Got A friend over JT's. The chord changes in that song are incredible.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 10 April 2006 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Absolute classic personally. Check 'Bitter With The Sweet' from Rhymes & Reasons. That and Writer are both great albums.

pitwithspikes (pitwithspikes), Monday, 10 April 2006 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Everyone needs to get her pre-solo career lp as The City. So many great songs, perhaps even outdoes Tapestry in this respect.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Monday, 10 April 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Well, what do YOU think? As if what a bunch of mongs on a messageboard think should matter to you.

mason r butler, Tuesday, 11 April 2006 03:13 (twenty years ago)

i dig king, but i can't handle hearing that damn gilmore girls theme song ever again.

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Never been 'into' her as such, however, there was a recent live album with, as an extra track, a slowed down version of Up On The Roof which I find very affecting, very affirming.

garax the mighty sky druid, Friday, 14 April 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

"road to nowhere" is amazing. thank you!!!
