I'm singing this note 'cause it fits in well
With the chords I'm playing
I can't pretend there's any meaning here
Or in the things I'm saying

But I'm in tune
Right in tune

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 16 April 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 16 April 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

There once was a note, pure and easy,
Playing so free, like a breath rippling by.
The note is eternal, I hear it, it sees me,
Forever we blend it, forever we die.

This is how I thought I'd start my song
And it seems a little silly when I think of it
But now I'm so far along
And no one really wants to know that he's wrong
That his ears can't really hear or he's blind a bit
Or that he's really weak when he thinks that he is strong
Now I'm in the middle and I just don't know
If I'll make it any further if the words don't flow
When you live in silence any sound is dear
But for those who don't, take heart because the end is near
This is the ending of my song
It has made me blind and deaf and weak but most of all
It shows you that I'm wrong
For you see it's really twice this long
And if I should die tomorrow it will carry on

We wrote this song, it's not too short, not too long
It's got back-up vocals in just the right places (in just the right places)
It's got a few oohs and ahhs (oooh aaah)
And it takes a little pause
Just before I sing the F word

Please play this song on the radio

Almost every line is sung on time
Almost every verse ends in a rhyme
The only problem we had was writing enough words
(oooh aaah)
But that's okay, because the chorus is
Coming up again now

Great moments in pop music meta-textuality

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 16 April 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I wrote a song
it was slow and long
i wrote the words and the music wrong
but life goes on
and on and on...

maybe it was, Sunday, 16 April 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

And that's a good line to take it to the bridge

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 16 April 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Bobby! Should I take 'em to the bridge?
(Go Ahead!)
Take 'em on to the bridge!
(Take em to the bridge!)
Should I take 'em to the bridge?
(Yeah!)
Take 'em to the bridge?
(Go Ahead!)
Hit me now!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 16 April 2006 17:47 (twenty years ago)

cursive's "sink to the beat," all of it

This is our "Music from A Bachelor's Den"
The sound of loneliness turned up to 10
A horror soundtrack from a stagnant waterbed
And it sounds just like this

This is the sound of someone losing the plot
Making out that they're OK when they're not
You're gonna like it - but not a lot
And the chorus goes like this

"By the way this girl was sexy & she wouldn't touch you/
that may not be true but I said it so you feel involved with the song"-- The New Radicals

twelve years pass...

Mike Love almost certainly thought 'yes, it does' immediately after having to sing the line 'it kills my soul' in 'Til I Die'.

(I picture him also rolling his eyes and miming a jerk-off motion.)

one year passes...

LMM - "I Am Moana"

"And the call isn't out there at all
It's inside me
It's like the tide
Always falling and rising"

the "the tide always falling and" part is in a descending melody and "rising" is in an ascending melody.

Also "Moana" means "ocean" in nearly all polynesian languages so there's a little extra meta for you.

The dudes from the "Switched on Pop" podcast are always talking about this kind of thing. Apparently it's called "text painting".

Taylor Swift:
"But I got a blank space baby
(empty space for 2 beats)
and I'll write your name"

Another Taylor example: Songs that actually, like, stop when the singer says 'stop.'
