i know this is silly and everything. you guys should know what i'm asking for, though.

maybe extend to sunshine-y pop within the last 25 years. kind of goes hand-in-hand, i think. the first two cardigans albums, felt, el records, etc...

i am hoping his solo record is low on the haymanesqueness.

Yeah, I'm also confounded as to why ballboy in the Destroy category. I've only heard "Guide for the Daylight Hours", but it's top-notch dour confessional pop, with a great sense of humor and lots of verve. Personally, I'd switch 'em with Camera Obscura, although all these groups are too pleasant for me to comfortably wish ill of.

A personal favorite of mine, which might be the sort of thing you're looking for: "Brief Lives" by the Would-Be-Goods.

Seconded.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Thursday, 13 April 2006 08:16 (twenty years ago)

Seconded

...especially if you like lit & art references and that kind of stuff with your polite pop. Songs about Byron, A Beardsley etc etc:

"With Robbie Ross and Beerbohm
and the rest of Oscar's clique,
He demonstrates that tous les monstres
       ne sont pas en Afrique
"

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Thursday, 13 April 2006 08:38 (twenty years ago)

^ Are the Go-Betweens scarfpop, then? I think I've seen photos of Robert Forster in a scarf.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Thursday, 13 April 2006 11:51 (twenty years ago)

I suppose scarf-pop is like twee pop that's less earnest and more arch? With better lyrics and maybe trumpets or glockenspiel? I don't know if I think of Felt as being twee- or scarf-pop; the songs are beautiful and all, but I feel like they're a bit enigmatic and obscure to be lumped in with B&S, Camera Obscura, Acid House Kings, etc. etc.

Matinee Records owns this thread x 8385609205053, obviously, as they own the Lucksmiths.

Delays! No "the," just "Delays." Greg Gilbert cries a little every time someone calls them "the Delays."

Where is Prefab Sprout in all of this? They seem quintessentially scarf.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Thursday, 13 April 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Re: Felt, I agree with Owen. I did a double-take when I saw your post, because I had actually written almost exactly the same thing, except my adjectives were "abstract" and "obtuse", although in the end I pared that line of thought from my original post.

On the other hand, they do reference Rimbaud like the Would-Be-Goods. Perhaps all this literary pop should be grouped into the "bardcore" genre. (To be fair, I didn't make up that name (although I wish I did).)

I find it interesting that Daniel extended his criteria to "sunshine-y" music, since that makes me think of summer, while scarfs tend to be a winter item.

Scarfpop

Have we reached a new low on genre names here?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Brigadier; on this thread you have to ask your questions in the form of a quoted French philosophy text and/or Symbolist poem, or no one will answer you.

Seems more like the aforementioned Monochrome Set's territory.
