I haven't seen the news in the English language yet, but Györgi Ligeti has died in Vienna at the age of 83.

RIP (LOL @ thread title)

Sad news -- we've lost a true genius.

I've seen the term "Ligeti split" used to describe his characteristic procedure of beginning a texture on a single pitch and branching out chromatically (or microtonally) above and below...

more than anything else those big evil clouds of notes just hanging in midair on the 2001 soundtrack got me listening to modern classical. RIP.

zappi (joni), Monday, 12 June 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Truly say day. He was one of the best modern living composers. Atmosphers, Lux Aeterna, the whole "Mechanical Music" CD, Le Grande Macabre, Lontano, Apparatiions, etc - all masterpieces to me.

I guess this means he'll never finish his 2nd opera.

RIP

[Can we alter the thread title, its probably confusing?]

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 12 June 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Only if my brilliant pun is left intact. (I'm sad to admit I knew he was sick, and had been planning the thread title.)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 12 June 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

sad news.

I'll ysi 'continuum' and 'requiem' tonight if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 12 June 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 12 June 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

"Atmospheres" is still one of the scariest pieces of music I've ever heard. I consider that an achievement on the composer's part. Ligeti RIP.

LC (Damian), Monday, 12 June 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

RIP - really sad, but also really glad all of his stuff was put out over the last 10 years by Sony and Teldarc

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 12 June 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 12 June 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

His music has been hugely important to me.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

You can hear an old interview here.

xyzzzz__ (jdesouza), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

RIP -- I prefered his earlier work to his later stuff, but he was undeniably one of the ten most important composers of his era.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Rest In Peace. I was introduced to his music this year. I went to hear a performance of some pieces for strings and was astounded. A great man.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

Like zappi said probably the first modern music I ever heard was in 2001. So far out to me then that i didn't even realise it could be music. If that makes any sense. Anyway it's an out and out masterpiece. A load of beautiful piano music as well.

RIP.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

tried to make it through 'requiem' last night, but had to stop, it felt like a strange way to mourn. I forget the exact source of this quote, but as someone said, 'that piece is about the dead, it's not for them'

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

RIP.
