TS: Positive K's "I Got A Man" v. Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous"

Both are back-and-forth exchanges between an aggressiove guy and the girl he's got his eye on; clever remarks and flirty exchanges ensue (in sync with the beat, natch), and it's impossible not to sing along to them if you hear either. I'm really digging "Promiscuous" right now, but "I Got A Man" will forever have a place in my heart.

musically (musically), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

promiscuous = ass
i got a man = now and forever in love

Bea Arthur - Lost COmic GEnius ? (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

i love the ass

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

I Got a Man is great and annoying at the same time.

Promiscuous is just annoying.

CDDB (Dan Deluca), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

'i got a man' is a study in multiple personality disorder, what with positive k providing both the male and female rapping

gear (gear), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

jaysus! no contest positive k all the way.

M@tt He1geson, Rendolent Ding-Dong (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I Got a Man vs. I'm Not Havin' It is the proper TS

PappaWheelie 2 (PappaWheelie 2), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

oh jesus, "I Got a Man" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Promiscuous". Not even a fucking question.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

pos K definitely. anything with nelly furtado on it is already fighting a losing battle against suck.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Hush Hush Tip" > "I Got A Man"

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

"I Got A Man" is a fun song and all but don't you think there's maybe a slight chance that you guys are massively overrating it? It's no "Knockin' Boots", that's for sure.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

NO!

M@tt He1geson, Rendolent Ding-Dong (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

SILENCE YOU HOSTESS SNACK PRODUCT GONE BAD

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

"Mybabydaddy"

xhuxk (xheddy), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

it's certainly not being massively overrated in relation to the nelly furtado song

CDDB (Dan Deluca), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

"Mybabydaddy"

A much better TS (though K still takes, obviously)

"I Got A Man" is a fun song and all but don't you think there's maybe a slight chance that you guys are massively overrating it? It's no "Knockin' Boots", that's for sure.

yeah, no. "I Got a Man" is one of the best pop-rap songs of all-time.

"Hush Hush Tip" > "I Got A Man"

Arguable, but fairly irrelevant. Very, very different songs.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

positive k can heal people through the laying of hands.

M@tt He1geson, Rendolent Ding-Dong (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Not to pile on, but Dr. Bill OTM. "Knocking Boots" sucked. What else is supposed to be better than "I Got a Man"? "Oochie Coochie La La La"?

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

"Mybabydaddy" (quite possibly the best single of the entire '90s) >>>>>>>>>>>> several tracks by Louis Prima and Keely Smith >>>>>>> "I Got a Man" >> "Promiscuous" (which is still pretty good)

xhuxk (xheddy), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

"Knocking Boots">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(4 pages of ">"s)>>>>>>>> the tremendously overrated "I Got A Man"

It's Rodney, pimp! (R. J. Greene), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

behave yrsel! anyone who thinks "i got a man" is overrated hates fun! and is deaf-aid!

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

"promiscuous" is great btw, although the word 'promiscuous' itself isn't very sexy.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly you hate fun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

yes that's right, mr promiscuous.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

Astounding!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

Incredible!

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

Amazing!

It's Rodney, pimp! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

"yeah, no. "I Got a Man" is one of the best pop-rap songs of all-time."

Wow. Just, no. Maaaaaaaybe Top 100.

"Ditty" >>>>>>> "I Got A Man".

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 22 June 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

I'll give you a _> but fuck this multiple > business. knocking boots gets shit on by every other song mentioned on this thread. i've listened to 'promiscuous' voluntarily 20+ times this year more than all others combined - this has implications!

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 22 June 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

implications for your shitty taste, SO THERE

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 22 June 2006 01:46 (nineteen years ago)

"Ditty" is good, yes, but you could teach a college Psych course on the ins and outs of the verbal tango in "I Got a Man".

Oh, and since I've never heard another Positive K song, does anyone know if Positive K is the guy in IGAM or is it a group including both the guy and the girl? If not the latter, then who the fuck is she and what's she up to these days?

"Promiscuous" is good but the quality is almost all beat-based. The verses are uninpsiring and the chorus is downright stoopid.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 22 June 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

"Ditty" is good, yes, but you could teach a college Psych course on the ins and outs of the verbal tango in "I Got a Man".

This is a gigantic pile of horseshit.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

(I mean, I wasn't serious about "Knockin' Boots" but FFS is this ILM or a white frathouse?)

see fifth post in thread

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 22 June 2006 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

xxxpost the verses are brilliantly...unencumbered with meaning allowing the beat to flourish(I kind of mean this), and the chorus is downright great. Positive K is the dude btw. He was down with MC Lyte before the solo iirc. I saw him in some other rapper's videos after his hit being a music executive, he might have been pretending I dunno.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 22 June 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

he had that song with lyte "excuse me miss." actually, did that come before "i got a man?"

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 22 June 2006 02:49 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus OTM

It's Rodney, pimp! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 22 June 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

Songs where a guy and a girl go back and forth arguing

jäxøñ (jaxon), Thursday, 22 June 2006 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

the chorus is downright stoopid

very OTM. The chorus is a complete letdown.

musically (musically), Thursday, 22 June 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

The chorus is bad, and Furtado's rapping in the verses makes me cringe every time!

CDDB (Dan Deluca), Thursday, 22 June 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

TIMBALAND GOT FAT

jäxøñ (jaxon), Thursday, 22 June 2006 04:11 (nineteen years ago)

Has the ILM Furtado backlash really started already?

It's Rodney, pimp! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 22 June 2006 04:15 (nineteen years ago)

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 22 June 2006 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

i have never heard of the other song

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 22 June 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

Flyboy (Flyboy), Thursday, 22 June 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

thoughts on Nelly Furtado/Timbaland collab?

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

the next Nelly/Tim single should be "maneater." much better than "Prom. Girl."

veronica moser (veronica moser), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

if you hate 'promiscuous' you probably hate life. so why don't you kill yourself now and save proper humans with taste from having to put up with your indie bullshit?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

lex... are you nelly furtado?

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

Arguable, but fairly irrelevant. Very, very different songs.

Not really, came out around the same time and Hush Hush Tip actually quotes "I Got A Man"'s chorus in the lyrics.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

so why don't him kill himself now and save music respecting whiteman with taste from having to put up with indian buffalo shit.

PappaWheelie 2 (PappaWheelie 2), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

i've decided N2Deep's "Back to the Hotel" is better than all these songs.

if you hate 'promiscuous' you probably hate life. so why don't you kill yourself now and save proper humans with taste from having to put up with your indie bullshit?

'i got a man' is pretty boring

gear (gear), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard "I Got a Man" in years, but I used to love it back in the day and suspect that hearing it again would put a big grin on my face. And "Knockin' Boots" is incredible.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

is this ILM or a white frathouse?

It better be a frat house, or else I did all those naked jumping jacks and Jager shots for no reason when I joined.

M@tt He1geson, Rendolent Ding-Dong (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

for the record, I like Knockin Boots and it is no longer the worst song on the thread(lookin at you, N2Deep)

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

I Got a Man is sheer brilliance

"are you a chef? 'cause you keep feeding me soup"

amazing

archipelago (archipelago), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

After listening to the first half of Nelly's album, everyone is totally OTM re: "No Hay Igual" (fuckin' excellent!) and completely wrong about "Maneater" (well, this is a load of nonsense).

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

maneater is boring

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

at first you're all like "what a tempo!!!" and then your eyes glaze over until the next song. ilm is weird

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

I wanted to like Maneater but it has a goofy chorus

dmr (Renard), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

I like the album version of "Maneater" better the single version (which is a bit too repetitive)

It's Rodney, pimp! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

OHTEHNOEZ! Goofy chorus!

(xpost over myself)

It's Rodney, pimp! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

goofy=sucks ass

dmr (Renard), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

Not hardly. OTT>Not OTT
