Howdy

Howdy - name's Sean - 38 - came in with the wave of refugees as a result of this site being listed in Entertainment Weekly. Favorite band: XTC. But I like almost any kind of music. Can't play it worth a lick. But can listen to it pretty good.

Sean Robison (yaratnam), Sunday, 6 August 2006 06:04 (nineteen years ago)

Hi. Just turned 19 3 hours 20 minutes ago. Student at Rutgers university. Favorite artist Aphex Twin (I think). But I can't stop shoegazing.

"14 I LOVE MUSIC
For the uninitiated, this message board can be an uninviting place. Threads are often filled with obscure Web slang, vicious flaming, and know-it-all 'tude. But it's also an amazing place to learn about music, both new and old. Fierce debate takes up the bulk of the bandwidth, often leading to some of the most intelligent music talk around (many posters are music critics). Last year's long-running thread on Sri Lanka-born rapper M.I.A., to pick one example, was worthy of a grad-school seminar.

ILM: #14 on Entertainment Weekly's 25 Best Music Websites

I was wondering what the hell happened.

Miki (Miki), Sunday, 6 August 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

They didn't mention ESTEBAN BUTTEZ so fuck 'em.

Domenico Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Sunday, 6 August 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Even with the bonus of bringing us someone with enough taste to claim XTC as their favourite band.

Welcome to the wave o' refugees from wherever you fare.

Welcome, I new too, you special friend be to me? Help me with push buttons on machine?

lexurian (lexurian), Sunday, 6 August 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

Howdy Sean!

I'll give them 'uninviting'...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Sunday, 6 August 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just surprised Raggett didn't turn up with some clever remark about how Christiane seems more together than a certain other 19 year-old student here. :-D

Howdy indeed! XTC were once my own favourites when I was very young, days when my father would play 'Nonsuch' on practically every long car-journey. Still love 'em, even now, and here's hoping for another album, someday...

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 6 August 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

You're really not doing yourself any favours saying that. I think thats the kind of thing that annoys him.
I've met Ned and he's a fine fellow. It takes a lot to get him mad.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, it wasn't meant to be sardonic, just mildly teasing. I don't do that sort of thing if I don't like somebody, and Ned seems to be a fine fellow who I regrettably got off on the wrong foot with. Certainly his taste in all things music/film/etc is impeccable, not that I'm one to judge a human being on such paltry gauges ;-)

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

his taste in films is awful ffs.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

he likes Local Hero and that's the only evidence I've seen so far

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

he likes smashing pumpkins ffs

;)

I am serene in my loves and hates.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Except in your hate for Belle & Sebastian.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Another day, another thread, another louis jagger highjack

"I'm just surprised Raggett didn't turn up with some clever remark about how Christiane seems more together than a certain other 19 year-old student here. :-D"

I'd be surpised if said other 19 year-old student didn't turn up on a newbie thread and make a comment about himself.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Sean - d'you like XTC's 'dub' album Explode Together? kinda interesting to my ears.

lexurian (lexurian), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

I like the way a passing remark has suddenly become a 'highjack'. The main point of my message was to say hello, which I did, and applaud the newby's XTC love, which I also did. You're merely exacerbating the issue.

xpost

Explode Together, eh? Not heard it yet; which tracks are recommended?

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

New Broom and Work Away Tokyo Day are pretty good, It's a patchy and rather odd collection as the subtitle 'dub experiments' suggests; came out years ago, I like it just because Partidge et al's natural eccentricity (much as they must loath the word) is given free reign.

lexurian (lexurian), Monday, 7 August 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

Welcome!

I'm not enough of a presence on ILM to bother coming up with a snarky comment here.

But yay for XTC.

> Sean - d'you like XTC's 'dub' album Explode Together? kinda interesting to my ears.

I've managed to listen to it once. A little TOO experimental for me. Of course, this was several years ago, so maybe it's worth trying again. I do admire any artist willing to play around and create music outside of their commercial comfort zone.

> So there's this XTC thing called "Apple Box"...

I do wish they'd come out with something new. There's only so many different configurations of the same two albums I can tolerate - original version of both, the "Apple Box" version, demo albums of both, instrumental versions of both. I can't wait for the Morse code version of both... I'm sure that's in the works.

At least the Fuzzy Warble series is nice aural snack between main courses.
