Another small code request - GRANTED

Ya know, if it isn't too hard, next time you're rolling out new code .. can you add a link inside th threads to display images, just for that thread? That is, if "hide images" is checked in settings, can you supply a link to click that temporarily displays images in the current thread? Just like when you only show the last (50) messages, you can click a link to display all messages ...

Something like that, do you think you could do it, huh?

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, that would be useful.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Useful indeed.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Does the "show all details" link do that? if not, should it?

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 7 August 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

re, small code request, nobody answered my recent question yet, viz should the "Show all details" link include this function. i think so, and thus we get a bonus feature without mussing up the links and UI what not

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 8 August 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

(d'oh, wrong thread, still the observation stands)

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 8 August 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Even when I do get a chance to work on ILX, I got other things to do. I do think this is a good idea though.

As far as I know, your login is still valid Alan, hint hint nudge nudge say no more say no more.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 8 August 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

"Show All Details" definintely doesn't show pictures. Since I do a lot of browsing at work, I would appreciate the ability to show pictures for a thread being attached to a different link as the times when I want to peek at people's usernames are completely distinct from the times I want to peek at people's images.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 August 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

why don't you just set your preferences to always display username then?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Displaying usernames should perhaps be default for registered users (see also identity theft).

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

You can change your settings to display user names all the time. I certainly make use of this function.

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah, duh. I wish everyone would do that.

But still, display images, that's what I want, see. I think it would be pretty easy to code and I don't think it needs to be hidden in 'show all details' .. Just add a link at the top to display images in the current thread.

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

why don't you just set your preferences to always display username then?

Because doing so sometimes ruins humorous posts. I like to laugh, then check to see if I twigged onto the joke. (Also, since I only care about someone's username 5% of the time, I prefer not having the clutter at the end of the post.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

i was wondering why you seemed so susceptible to those types of gags!! ha!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

i never display e-mail address, and miss out on those gags

ANYWAY

"show all details" link now over-rides "no images"

PLUS

I think i've got threads rolling back to "last read" position if this is earlier than your "show last X messages" setting.

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

now can i really be faffed to screen out entities in the name field? someday.

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

awesome! you are a golden god!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

That is great. I wonder if it will also have the effect of lightening the load on the servers? If most people now hide images and only show them sometimes .. will that lessen any traffic, even though no images are hosted on ILX?

ANyway .. thanks very much!!!

Oh, that is the r0Xor!!! Excellent!

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh if that works you are Cap'n Awesomepants.

DP, are you familiar with the expression, "eat a bag of dicks"?

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

I think I found a quirky little error. It's not real important to fix, but can someone post a message here:
something looks screwy

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

there is something up, plus i've just noticed that the (later) link only pops up half way through a thread. WTF?

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

(duplicate from the HTML test thread...)

ha ha, it is only happening because i unilaterally decided that it would be good to show the previous post, i.e. to show the last read message before showing unread. i'm pretty sure this is NOT how it used to work.

anyway, is easy to fix

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

DP, are you familiar with the expression, "eat a bag of dicks"?

I may have heard that before...

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

When I click on any of the threads here I get Message Not Found until I delete the little "#unread" from the address and resubmit. Just saying.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

At least the DeSub New Answers page is back.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

But now ILB New Answers ain't coming through.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

hein? check your URL, should be ilx.wh3rd.net/newanswers.php?board=54

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Here is the behavior is I observe it. If I click on any of the bookmarks up top of THIS page, I get No New Messages. If I go back to ILXor.com and go back in it goes back to normal.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

OK, that's not happening right now. But this is: This URL

Another small code request - GRANTED

gives

Problem loading page:
Message not found

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Of course, when I'm actually on the page and click the link, it works.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Jon's thread is doing some weird stuff too.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

i copied and pasted that URL into a new browser window and no problems. EH?

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

for the record, the (later) link only appears against messages that have been posted in the last 7 days (i.e. within newanswers time)

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if it's only me who's hatstand on this.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

well the error is obv a server response, so it does seem like the request you are sending differs in some crucial way. could you copy and paste an URL that consitently gives that error, but omit the http so that it doesn't get processed on submission.

also, try logging out and reloading that url. as if it's not the simple URL w get params, perhaps it's something in your settings that's going bonkers)

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

When I cut and paste URLs to new browers, fine. It almost seems like the New Answers page is resetting something.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

If I turn off "Show time of last message" it seems to work better, but then if I click on Jon's thread I get the weird problem(s) again.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

In fact, if I try to post to that thread I get

Problem inserting message:
No Message Entered
Please go back and type a message.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I think the title of Jon's thread may have some effect, possibly only on this browser, Internet Explorer, because I started a thread with the same title in the HTML Playground and got the same weird behavior. I'll try it on Safari when I get home.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that was it.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
haha
