chris (chris), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I won't be able to make this owing to a previous engagement with a big pile of fluffy snow.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You sound like Al Pacino in 'Scarface' RickyT!

As I'm moving on this day I don't think I can make it either, sadly.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(It's that British male reserved thing)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm not reserved. At least no-ones rung up to book me.)

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll also be around Jan. 16-20 if anyone who can't make it would like to meet for a cup of coffee or tea or whatever one drinks when in London...Suzy: I think shopping first is the plan...Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Ed, you're being lysdexic, you mean 8pm to 1am.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I may be helping Andrew with his move, possibly, but if I'm not or if I can get away in the evening, I'll be there. If either of you are likely to be bored on a weekday near Tottenham Court Road/British Museum, especially around lunchtime or 5pm, let me know.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

''If either of you are likely to be bored on a weekday near Tottenham Court Road/British Museum, especially around lunchtime or 5pm, let me know.''

yup, this applies to me as well. me and martin work nearby.

saturday evening FAPs are a bit difficult because it's the weekend and I like to rest on sat evening. weekday FAPs are good.

''What is all this its gonna be difficult nonsense? These chicks are hottttt!!!!''

OK. I'll be there.

(seriously I'll try. I need to start going to libraries to read all that academic stuff again so i can drop by for a quick drink).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(And Toby, back in the country!)

yeah! my triumphant return to london faps!

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And me too. I too work in the area (am certainly nearest the BM).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps we should organise a group lunchtime trip to look at the Field?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I too work in the area (am certainly nearest the BM).

Some jokes are too easy.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea where I'll be living then, or I might even be moving that weekend, but I wnat to meet felicity!

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

she wants to meet you too! and everyone else!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the Field?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

either that or the malborough arms pub.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Gormley artwork, Field For The British Isles or whatever it's called - countless little clay humanoids (that we call Gorms) staring at you, on show at the British Museum now.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Its one of my favorite pieces of art from the last few years. Plaintive little clay people.

http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/field/fpic.jpg

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, wow! Looks cool...Has anyone seen the Durer, also at the BM? And I def. want to see the Gainsborough at the Tate...

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Gormley and the Durer are all good. Then the Museaum Tavern or the Plough over the road.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 9 January 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Durer is grebt. There's loads and loads of it: more than I could really take in. Gainsborough I can live with, but mostly choose to live without.

Ed they're not plaintive! They're friendly, and a bit inquisitive! (Actually sometimes I think they're oddly hostile, but never plaintive.)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 9 January 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

They all have different expressions if you look at them for long enough. I'm pleased they're doing the rounds again. I like them.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There is one about three rows back whos head must have fallen off in the kiln. He's my favourite.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Gordon the Gopher should get royalties.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

18th sounds good to me :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

the gorms r ripped off from calvin and hobbes snow art btw

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

so what if they are its still great. art is rarely about original ideas anyway. (ducks, runs)

Ed (dali), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Gorms are ripped off the Dulux commercial.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 9 January 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm too BROKE sorry. But I'll think of you whilst MOPING (apologies for the damming with faint praise).

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the picture of the Gorms makes them look like breakfast cereal.

Sarah, you are famous and we HAVE to meet you. We are coming thousands of miles to see you; surely you can make it into central London! I will bring you some airplane bouze if I have to.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 9 January 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: dull Gormley tat vs pathetic Gillian Wearing crap

the pinefox, Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

You come outside and say that.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't get outside cz all the bloody gorms are blocking the doorway and the hall

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Starry if yr around I'll fund you a trip into town to meet your transatlantic fanbase.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't get outside cz all the bloody gorms are blocking the doorway and the hall

I love the idea of being invaded by gorms.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If they had a fire I could piss on it and feel like Gulliver.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Gorms of Chicago:

http://www.uchicago.edu/research/jnl-crit-inq/images/v27n3.cover.jpeg

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary and Felicity: 35th row, 19th from left.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers - all I need is subbing for some bus fare and a few GINS... I have decided that I have to GIVE UP BITTER. It makes me mean! Whereas gin, gin it may make a man mean, but a lady? It makes me alert! Aware! And have an urge to watch STAR TREK dere lord.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah we've read all about ladies and gin on that other thread Starry, 'alert and aware' whatever.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh what other thread?

Also: BAR BILLIARDS! When I play bar billiards cabbage is not allowed to watch cos he tells me I am rubbish :(

OK I am :(

:(

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

White Spirits: search & destroy

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Bwahahaha it is ALL TRUE!

(Hmph due to everything in my life fucking up I am not sure if I dare try my credit card to pick up a lovely bottle of PLYMOUTH GIN which I think is an apt gin partner to beautiful beautiful bombay sapphire...)

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what's this about wanting to watch star trek?

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 9 January 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be interested in visiting this "Spanish Bar" of yours.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody expects.....

Oh that joke's been done before.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Star Trek film is okay, but you always know what's gonna happen next! It's kinda like Dawson's Creek.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Another BM question: They have the best collection of Japanese prints in the world, but do they not exhibit regularly?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was waiting for felicity to mention the Spanish Bar.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, I'm obsessed with the S_______ B__.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the spanish bar isnt even any good!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

fascinating!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to visit the gorms today, as a lunchtime treat/reward because I was on top form this morning at work. I'm sad to report that NO Japanese stuff is on show - the Japanese gallery reopens in February. I did buy three books of Japanese prints while there.

I'm really looking forward to meeting Mary & Felicity.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for checking Martin!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I considerately responded to your message 7 hours before you posted it! No, I go to the BM pretty often (weekly, in some phases), and the Japanese gallery (all the way to the back, right at the top) is my usual favourite.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Go to the Irish Bar instead.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

gormley in betty crocker ripoff shocker!!

http://www.kuci.org/~brianm/ile/bettycrocker/adventuresinspace.jpg

ron (ron), Friday, 10 January 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Spanish Bar > Irish bar, if only because it's grubbier.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

You can't take many people to the spanish bar though.

Ed (dali), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Irish Bar is the one upstairs, right? MUCH better than the Spanish Bar.

Astonishingly, I have only just found out about this FAP, but I'll definitely be there...

kate, Friday, 10 January 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Irish bar is miles away you crazies. Post pub FREE CLUB is the way to go!

And it wasn't the Star Trek film. I just taped the episode where Picard gets napped by thee Borg as I hadn't seen it and I like the Borg a-a-a-and....

THERE IS NO HOPE HERE.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The Irish Bar of which we speak is a nasty boozer in Kings Cross which opens late-ish. You wouldn't want to take many people there, unless you were Pete.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Which I am. Irish Bar!

We must work harder on out late night boozer hunt. In Mabel's last night we left at about 11:40 and it showed no sign of closing. I think this might be because the bar staff did not understand licencing laws but we were very good and did not exploit them - despite TOm's pleading.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fools!

NB Pete remember - 28th January - Chairman Mick - know what I mean??

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Groooo Mabels. I ph34r3d due to late return last night that you had been to the Irish Bar but I think enough damage was done anyway. A certain K___y's B_r also does not understand licensing laws.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

There are tons of boozers which will let you have late drinkies if you've been in there a fair while, though. It's another thing finding somewhere which will gladly accept a mob of drunks after chucking-out time.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

late nite action can take place at the russian bar this time

gareth (gareth), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

there will be russians dancing to trance in front of a mirror. the beer is top quality also

gareth (gareth), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My problem with your Russian bar, Gareth, is that it's very, very difficult for me to get home from. There's a lot to be said for keeping things central.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

well, its probably best to just see what happens?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed yes. I don't know why I'm complaining because it's very unlikely I'll be out until late, on account of being orf the bouze. I'm mostly grousing because I'd like to have been to this Russian bar already and its location has made that unfeasible.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Tim's point. The Spanish bar is walking distance away from a night bus route for me, the Russian bar isn't. Nor the Irish really, though that's just about doable.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well if we are at the Stores the Spanish makes the most sense.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

So...what is the best Sam Smiths beer to drink?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete, you have just said the Spanish bar makes sense WHILST PERFECTLY SOBER. Do you realise?!

Mary: it depends on what you like. Old Brewery is what I like. And the NUT BROWN ALE yum.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

THE FAT MAN! (Actually Nut Brown is probably their best beer)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

D Pils (Ha Ha).

I like the Spanish Bar even when I'm sober (though of course when sober I don't generally eat leftover food - a memory which has just come back to haunt me).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete you nabazo.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No but I bought food in there once (had been in the Doghouse, which had stopped serving food and we were starving) and it was lovely.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well the scraps I ate where k-yummy.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete you eating those scraps is surely a worse memory for those of us who watched you do it.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hungry. I rarely get hungry. I'd have eaten a horse if it was the French Bar.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've decided that today I'm on a liquid diet. My intake so far has been two coffees and three GINS. This is the intake of a thin person. Why am I not thin? This sucks.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm SO INCREDIBLY BORED.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry)

Yes pub!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Three gins already starry?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Or as the French say, "trois er... gins".

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

RFI: beers to order at the Glasshouse! I tend to like lighter rather than darker. Or will we drinking pitchers so it doesn't matter?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

for the most part we don't have pitchers over here!

(but I'm no expert on beer, as I don't drink any)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I would avoid the Sam smith's Pale Ale and IPA. There's something not quite right about it. Does Sam Smith's do a Mild? If so I'd like to give that a shot and maybe they can redeem themselves.

Ed (dali), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Americans only like lager, surely? If you're onto bitter, the two main Sam Smiths beers are pretty interchangeable, I think.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Americans have light ales aplenty. Also some good dark lagers. (and bottled piss called budweiser)

Ed (dali), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Old Brewery Pale Ale is dead nice, despite what Ed might say.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 10 January 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, that gormley piece was the cover of james brown's go round power please!

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 11 January 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, if we go to the spanish bar we could ask them what "nabazo" means...

although if it's rude, maybe not such a good plan...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 11 January 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Finish this:

How many gorms can you fit inside the spanish bar?

Ed (dali), Saturday, 11 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

so who's going to be there?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

not me - the glasshouse stores when packed gives me claustrophobia.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm planning on it - what time are people thinking of getting there (I know the Americans are in thrall to 'Mr 8'o'clock' Gareth - but anyone else? ;))

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there at some point.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

might go, say at 7-ish.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends on my other plans, but the late start last Saturday eventually led to Irish bar based ruin.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

My train back from The Provinces is scheduled to arrive at 8 so I should be there from about 8.20 plus whatever time Grt Wstrn Rlwys decide to add on for injury (or poss insult).

Mary: you should drink the easy-flowing, easy drinking light lager which goes by the name of D.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Me - I'll be there.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

lets make it a 7 start then, and we can all come whenever we're ready...the same as normal!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll rock up.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"I know the Americans are in thrall to 'Mr 8'o'clock' Gareth"

ha ha! I'm glad so many people can make it, looking forward to it! (thanks for all the beer suggestions btw)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too! Can't wait to see you all.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, not sure I'll be able to, which makes me kinda sad.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha Cabbage is scared of me taking Bar Billiards revenge on him.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

any time Tim, apart from Friday night that is of course.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Call it Saturday night then. Glasshouse Stores?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tempted... where's the Glasshouse Stores?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My parents are down this weekend, to turn our flat into a DIY nightmare again, so although we'll probably be desperate to get out of there it would be a bit rude to desert them.

However, if things do get to bad it may well be less rude to go out than to risk te consequences of staying in.....!

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

grrr OK, just not this weekend.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pub231.htm.

Glasshouse Stores is on Brewer St, south side, not far from the junction with Lexington St. Be careful though, it has the habit of becoming invisible.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the link tim.

julio i will bring yr pile of goodies (note self: record ut record ut record ut)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll probably get there around 7ish, or later.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel: can you bring a copy of the ilx compilation CD for me?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

''julio i will bring yr pile of goodies (note self: record ut record ut record ut)''

thanks mark. I'll record 'lick my decal off' for you.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

no probs pinefox! I think I have one for Anna as well.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I can arrive as early as anyone else fancies it, so I'll aim at 7. I'll definitely be there.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

no probs pinefox! I think I have one for Anna as well.

Jel you star, I was going to ask you about that.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i will do my best to be there *but* i am going out for lunch on saturday so may get hopelessly drunk and not make it. of course i may well get hopelessly drunk and still make it along, in which case i'd better make my apologies in advance...

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I can be there, if everything works out.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I just saw this. I would really like to come and meet people, but I don't think I'll be able to make it. I'm awful shy in real life, anyway. And I can't hear what people are saying in loud, crowded places. I blame rock music.

Maybe I'll come next time. Have fun, though.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

''I'm awful shy in real life, anyway. And I can't hear what people are saying in loud, crowded places. I blame rock music.''

yes, i'm kind of like that. I blame pop tho'.

I still try to go along. its an 'outing' and i don't get out much (apart from going to work of course).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the same (I really struggled when we moved on to the Irish bar post-pub on Saturday. Couldn't join in much at all). But the Glasshouse Stores isn't so noisy at all.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Glasshouse Stores is on Brewer St, south side, not far from the junction with Lexington St. Be careful though, it has the habit of becoming invisible.

You can say that again... I've just realised that I've walked past it at least three or four times a week for the past six months without having actually noticed it. Although this may just be a case of me being typically unobservant.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 January 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the trouble with glasshouse stores fap meet-ups (actually, it's probably true of pubs in general) is that unless you get there really early, if there's a big turnout you sometimes end up on the "outside" of everyone else and can't really join in. in extremis (as happened with me there last summer) i can get claustrophobic to the point of nausea and have to flee outside for some fresh air. kind of puts me off somewhat.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 January 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

bump

Anna (Anna), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

We should add "where's the Glasshouse Stores?" to the ILE FAQ

Alan (Alan), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello: you need two tables with enforced personnel switching on the hour. Better yet you can assemble one dais for Mary and one for Felicity, and then admire each of them in turn.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A half-hour admiration limit should keep conversation groups revolving nicely.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, i should be there, but i have an other engagement which seems to clash, so not entirely sure yet...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Have fun! Pictures! Stories!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

We're all coming. Gareth, let us know what time shopping commenceth?

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

suzy, I have your Dr. Bronner's with me right now!

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, don't you have a plane to catch? You are carrying an important cargo with you.

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! Cheers! Need the soap not for Great Unwashed reasons but because it's far too dear here. I have a running request for St Sebastian candle if anyone knows the right bodega for those...

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I KNOW THE PRESIDENT OF DR BRONNER'S SOAP!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

tell him to send us a case

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I can look for St Sebastian candles next time I'm at the grocery store, if you'd like.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a huge bottle of the liquid peppermint soap. As soap it's awful but I love the way it makes my bathroom smell.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the peppermint UNLESS it's summer and very sticky/muggy. But most of the soap we use in shower/bath is in fact DETERGENT so 'real' soap is like this. It is a fairly effective substitute for aircon anywhere except NYC. Also it's massively concentrated and a Kiehl's sample bottle full of it lasted me two weeks of holiday in Spain, France and Italy during a ridiculous heatwave.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean people actually use the soap instead of reading the label?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well you have to do SOMETHING with the soap once you've read the label! (Don't you?)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

*blink* So baths aren't an abstract concept? *flees*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

hello people, this is about PUB not soap, get yr own thread ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 18 January 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i am coming tonight in order to steady nerves for tuesday.

Marcello Carlin, Saturday, 18 January 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a good turnout, and Mary and Felicity are of course fantastic and an utter joy. I recommend you both move to London!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 19 January 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks everyone, it was great to meet you; I had a great time! London has been great, though still searching for the gritty underbelly. Tim, I didn't get to drink the D! Martin, did Felicity give you the CD opener? On the agenda for today: Camden Market, Stoke Newington, or the Iain Sinclair Lights out for the Territory Package Tour. And thanks Suzy and Ed for the shopping; the Kahimi Karie skirt will be rocked at the next NYC FAP! Oh, and we saw the little Gormley people!

Mary in London (gareth), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Felicity gave me the CD opener. I shall try it out as soon as I buy a new CD. That shouldn't be long.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I am very sorry any of our visitors had to encounter the Hairy Man.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a cool evening! How'd the ruin go? Mary and Felicity are both very nice.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

you must respect the hairy man, he told me so himself.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ALL HAIL THE SPANISH BAR

Yet another dream achieved! It was great to meet everyone. The London ILXoRs were so kind and friendly. I'm glad ILE was born!

Today I will do what Mary said plus I hope to take a photo of the number 31 bus.

felicity in London (gareth), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, the pinefox was operating machinery?????????

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh gah I'm so sorry I left early on goth babysitting duties - are you two still around for a while? It would be good to actually say more than a few words before rushing off! I hope you all had fun and that Mark C continued his absolute DOMINATION of the bar billards table...

I think I must be genetically programmed to be rub at bar billiards, oh well.

Starry, Sunday, 19 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh... I think I'm dying. Still, it was worth it, as the night rocked, Felicity and Mary are both very lovely indeed, bar billiards is the sport of kings, and I think the hairy man is actually kept chained up in a cellar underneath the Spanish Bar for most of the week and fed solely on fish heads. It would certainly explain a lot.

Plus, it was cool to find out that Julio and I went to the same sixth form college together. Although I fear I got a tad over-excited at the realisation.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Did a dwarf really try and sell us ear rings?

Ed (dali), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, he's always in the GSH. Next time I'm gonna buy the globe ones. Was the cigarette selling dude there?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

All sounds like a blast! :-) *jealous, unsurprisingly*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

''Plus, it was cool to find out that Julio and I went to the same sixth form college together. Although I fear I got a tad over-excited at the realisation.''

That's alright.

I enjoyed meeting mary and felicity. it was a blast. hopefully I'll get to meet Ned someday too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 19 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad I went. Had a long conversation with Kate which I'm likely to remember. She is a kind and wise person.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 20 January 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm jealous. Maybe it's time to rack up some more credit card debt...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 20 January 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

best fap ever! although the large coffee after the spanish bar was an error. and ed's picture is so close a resemblance it's terrifying.

also stevie - i fear i was quite drunk when i spoke to you in the spanish bar and just jibbered rubbish about GR. next time...

toby (tsg20), Monday, 20 January 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I briefly looked in at the Spanish Bar but sadly it was too crowded and claustrophobic for me. The evening as a whole, though, I enjoyed hugely.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 20 January 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the spanish bar was too crowded for everyone! especially after the hairy man herded us away from his amps (? was that what he was saying?)

toby (tsg20), Monday, 20 January 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it sounded like ";IOJVBF[[vubfanssswhoscoat iscigarulhafvED"

Marcello, I'm sory we didn't get to talk -- I didn't know it was you! Oh well, next time I can bore you about Don't Stand Me Down . . . time is too short. Hope everyone got home ok.
Jel, thank you for the comp. Can't wait to listen if we hate us. Toby are you coming to meet us later?

felicity waiting for anna (gareth), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

**and that Mark C continued his absolute DOMINATION of the bar billards table...**

Ahem. I will return to conquer all.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i popped in to say hello around sevenish, prob too early but i couldn't really recognise anyone except kinda this one guy at the bar in like this black zip top poss from gap who was looking at me funny who may have been matt dc come to think of it but he had just come in and said "xcuse me mate" as i dawdled on the doorstep so i was like "FUCK random people talking to me!!" :) haha and then my phone rang yeah what you on blud "...nothing. come we go"

to be continued ilx

zemko (bob), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i am definitely on for shopping later. i think anna is going to ring me?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Agh gumph er hello - did anyone grab my bags on the way out which I left behind like a TWAT? There was a Schneider TM album and some er... teatowels! Please?

Sarah (starry), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone had them. FOr a bit at least.

Didn't make it to Italy as rightly predicted once lots of people had left Spain it was quite comfy. Unfortunately that lots of people were fellow ILXors (and I had no desire for late doors coffee) - though I have never seen the Spanish Bar quite that full before.

We did warn you re the Hairy Man. It was lovely to see Mary & Felicity and look forward to seeing them in New York some time soon.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah those bags were definitely with us outside the ghs. i think gareth was trying to trick me into carrying them?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i think suzy may have them?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

A claimant! Sarah, Ed and I have your bags. They are sitting on the dining table.

How do you propose collecting them?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Just as I got there, I noticed someone come into the pub, look a bit lost for a moment as if they were looking to meet people they'd never seen before, and then give up and walk out. I wasn't wearing a zip-up Gap thing although I was wearing black, and the person in question was wearing something beige, and I did have to get past him at the door. Could well have been you. Actually, I'm pretty sure it was come to think of it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Felicity/Gareth... if said shopping trip is going to involve being around the centre of town at around lunchtime let me know and I'll come and say hello.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Poss ditto.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 20 January 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

If you were in Ealing, I'd come and say hello! (though once you've been in HMV, Smiths and the Gadget Shop there's nowt musch else to see). Hope y'all enjoy the comp.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 20 January 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

best to phone anna, she is with felicity now...

i am at work and mary has left:(

gareth (gareth), Monday, 20 January 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yep that was me! this is like those 'demonstrating subjectivity' things from school; gap charge repudiated, now i'm the "lostlooking guy in beige who ppl have to get past" :) that was a very xpensive coat g!

was anyone else there at that time then matt? where were they?

zemko (bob), Monday, 20 January 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

They were great and I wuv them.

Graham (graham), Monday, 20 January 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Pete, Martin Skidmore, Starry and Julio were hidden away round the corner from the bar but that was about it at that time.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 January 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the glasshouses wz designed by countess erzsebeth bathory, i think, it's all tortuous dead-ends and weird nooks and crannies and maidens hung up by their feet being drained of blood

mark s (mark s), Monday, 20 January 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know the GHS had a downstairs and round the corner so I will never express distain for it again. Bar billiards of course rules, even if I did loose to mark c and discover that I have always played some weird fenland version of the rules.

As for the Beers, having sampled most of the SS canon I can now articulate what I don't like about the. They have a certain acid quality, as if slightly stale rather than in a lembic type good way. They are cheap though.

Ed (dali), Monday, 20 January 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

thing that crossed my mind while smoking when phone rang: "dude that is WAY too many props"

zemko (bob), Monday, 20 January 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

If Felicity wants to see me can she send me an email? Cheers.

Graham (graham), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i think she flies home at 6pm or something. could be wrong though.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

zemko, what do you think of looking around for ppl and trying to find them?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 20 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the GHS is cunningly designed and staffed to make this as difficult as possible tho'

Jeff W, Monday, 20 January 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

To be fair, it's kind of an intimidating thing to do, especially if you don't know who you're looking for. At my first FAP in August I sat there for the duration of two pints trying to work out which group to approach. Actually, by the time Tim Hopkins actually approached me (to ask if I was Julio... oh the ironing!) I was on the verge of going up and introducing myself to the wrong group of people altogether.

Although it says a lot that when I saw Zemko I immediately thought 'ILXer'.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 January 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

''Actually, by the time Tim Hopkins actually approached me (to ask if I was Julio... oh the ironing!) I was on the verge of going up and introducing myself to the wrong group of people altogether.''

hehehe...

I think the thing to do is look in the pics thread. you'll see several london ILXORS there.

or you should have given a description of yourself as well, which is what i did when i met the first london ILXOR (mark s, at an improv gig).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 20 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"i am: scary mentalist with huge cute smile"

mark s (mark s), Monday, 20 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

FAP group-location strategy: *cough cough ahem* fremme neppe venetta *cough cough*

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

there should be a name card on the table or something so people can walk around and just look for the namecard. i suggest a little cardboard sign with 'we hate fun' on it 8) or get some badges made...

i didn't go. i can't decide whether this is better or worse than only turning up for 60 seconds like i did at the blue posts fap on sept 11th last year. don't like crowds, nothing drastic, just would rather meet new people a few at a time rather than 30 in one go, and saturday sounded like a crowd. and hate pubs. at least the sinister lot would meet at cafes...

andy

koogs, Monday, 20 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

TABLE?! You should be so fucking lucky...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit, the idea of wearing emoticon nametags ROCKS. (Sometimes I think I really should have gone to MIT...)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I suggest a secret handshake, possibly accompanied by pink carnations and a secret pass phrase:

ILE1: 'The weather is inclement in Bialsk'
ILE2: 'But the sun shines in Vladivostok'

Ed (dali), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

One idea I've had is of a kind of random multiple FAP (or fancy-a-meal maybe) to get over the lack of mixing and intimidating 30-at-once problem with the standard format. You'd take the names of everyone coming and divide it randomly into groups of 5 or 6 who'd all have separate-yet-simultaneous meet-ups.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

But what if the person you REALLY wanted to meet/talk to/drool on was in a different group?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd be fucked.
or
to be more precise
You wouldn't be fucked.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You could have the random FAP from 7-9 say and then converge on one of the pubs after that? By that time your dutch courage would be high too.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This is just so that the Steering Committee can have fun seating all the people together who have been flaming each other for weeks, isn't it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 January 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"i am seriously beginning to doubt your commitment to sparkle motion" sorry unimpressed julio i'll try harder next time

i did wander about for a little (well it felt like i did ok!), in fact i'm a little miffed that i missed martin skidmore cos i was sure i'd recognise him perhaps he blended in too well in the dungeon crannies haha er :) ...like, there was a downstairs?! i couldn't have found my madre in there! have to sympathise with matt dc's horrific tale of 2 pints, especially ordering the second one ouch. i'm not really hung up on it but y'all are still people. from. the. internet. and impatience tends to squash whimsy, a-and it's not like i went home and cried myself to sleep NO! trying not to sound cold here you know what i mean though right guys??

zemko (bob), Monday, 20 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The second one I went to (Anthony, midweek) Anthony and I did write 'ILE' in big letters on a piece of paper and left it on the edge of the table, since neither of us knew many people then.

My photo is on my profile here, and I'm one of the more regular early doors arrivers.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 January 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, Martin, we only pretend to like you here so you can serve as an early FAP placemarker!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 20 January 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn sorry I missed that! (Computer went mad, and I couldn't use it.) Still in London, but I hope you had a great time while you were here.....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 20 January 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Evidence that my depression is biting again: I had to read Nabisco's post three times before I convinved myself that he was joking.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 January 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

But Nichole, you are American, as are Mary & Felicity = you obviously know each other already.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 January 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin I was hoping the exclamation point and the ridiculous "we" (you have not been so kind as to placemark any FAPs on my continent) would take care of that.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 20 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

To my knowledge, Martin has never been in continent.

(God, that was crap.) (hee hee)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

''i'm not really hung up on it but y'all are still people. from. the. internet. and impatience tends to squash whimsy, a-and it's not like i went home and cried myself to sleep NO! trying not to sound cold here you know what i mean though right guys??''

yes, of course. Its just funny that you went there and didn't meet anybody, that's all.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 20 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I didn't mean that to be in any way critical of what you said, Nabisco - it's just that when you get into the kind of state I'm more and more obviously dipping towards, you put the worst possible interpretation on everything. I shall have to remember to be very cautious about taking offence or getting into arguments, because my judgement is impaired at present. As long as I'm sensible enough to be aware of this, I'll be okay...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 January 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(Aww, I'm sorry Martin: hope things look up soon.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 20 January 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess my "in continent"/"that was crap" joke didn't cheer you up. :-(

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 January 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that was okay, Dan - I couldn't possibly even begin to interpret that as anything but a joke!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 January 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'm sorry to get whiney on this thread, since no one should be depressed just after meeting Mary & Felicity = proof that my depression is chemical rather than reactive.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 January 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Martin, I'm sorry you're not feeling well...I've just got back to NYC...thanks again everyone for your continuing Anglo lessons, though I have learned that pie pie is not really a pie!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 January 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

man i just wanna know if the Mary and Felicity hype is worth believin' ;) whats the deal?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrraham wins the medal for the FAP-er who traveled the farthest! G, why don't you email me?

Glad everyone made it who could -- Nichole you'll just have to come to the next NY FAP. We have an easy solution for this trying-to-recognize people thing which is that we all don't wear PANTS. (Helps with finding seating as well -- why didn't I remember that in the S_____ B__?)

So in Sister Ray in a panic I demanded that Toby and Anna tell me something ILM-y to buy on pure faith and we wound up with Scritti Politti and St. Etienne. Thanks! {Anna and Toby, didn't you know that "Yes, you're right, I really need to go to the airport right now or I will miss my flight" is New York slang for "I have just decided that I need to buy these Scott Walker CDs that I am reaching my hand out for"?} Matt and Starry Sarah, alas, but we were marooned in the pinefox-dreaded Fulham Road and Berwyk Streets without your numbers so you'll just have to come to New York. In fact, all of you should come to New York!

It was the best trip ever :) Mary and I have been going around saying "Daaaaalston," as if to coax a shy animal or small child, with musical notes in our voices. We love saying it for some reason though we have never been there.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

you may not have been to dalston and marys 'daaaalston' dream may not have come true, but mary did come very close, as there was some Kingsland Rd action on the thursday night on the way to the russian bar

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course there is the pic of mary in front of the stamford hill broadway roadsign (clapton.hackney.daaaaaalston)!!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Soy ou went shopping with Toby and anna and no one invited me?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely you were a bit busy on Monday Graham. If it makes you feel better they went without inviting me either!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Rah for the trip reports! Now plan your West Coast trip and we'll have the LA FAP of the gods.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Graham -- didn't realize you had an interest in fashion or shopping -- like smoking, I wouldn't want to inflict it on the un-fashion-victimized!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham, it was something we arranged in the pub, based on the fact that Felicity, Toby and I all enjoy pretending to be shallow fashion victims, all live or were staying in north London and we all had time to meander in as:

Felicity - on holiday
Toby - skiving off doing PhD write up things
Me - freelancer - absolute definition of a time wasting slacker.

Before you get paraniod this was not a deliberate plan to exclude you or anyone else. Most people who were out on Saturday were either working yesterday or in a different city (Oxford, for example). Felicity had to catch her flight in the afternoon, so it was an early morning excursion.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have thought what with trying to get in for the last three months Graham would have been quite keen on enrolling at Brookes yesterday.

BTW - what did you buy?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes I would have liked to have seen more of you! But obviously this means you must COME AND VISIT AGAIN!!!! Hooray!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Me - freelancer - absolute definition of a time wasting slacker

But you never have any time to talk to me?

I didn't have to enrol at any particular time Pete. I'm only starting lectures tomorrow.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Me - Agnes B t-shirt, Ravonettes CD
Felicity - the best skirt in the world from Agnes B, plus assorted other clothes deemed "useful", cool star barrette from Butler and Wilson, lots of CDs (I admire a person who says "I need some Scott Walker" and promptly buys half the back catalogue. F - you have style)
Toby was very restrained and bought nothing, even though he will die of chills if he doesn't get a coat soon.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham, I'm not going through this again.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh did you go to Fopp for cheap Scott Walker? I'm sure I saw loads of cheap cds of his ilk lurking round there...

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, that was a snappy response and I shouldn't have posted it. It just seems that whenever I do speak to you, on-line or in the context of a FAP, you end up having a go at me. You're a good person, you have a lot of great qualities, but I don't appreciate being shouted at.

I think it's vital you make the most of your new start and spend the important early time talking to your flatmates, the other people on your course and making a shiny new life in Oxford. You cannot afford, in time and money, to spend every day running down to London. You've been waiting for this move for a long time, make the most of it. Me and the rest of IlX will be there as support and back up, but none of us can be everything to you. You've proved you can have conversations with people (which you were sure was impossible just a few months ago), you spoke to the computer room girl. Look at what you've achieved and go for it.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah - Sister Ray. Didn't see much of you on Saturday come to think of it, will have to remedy soon.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
no pics of the fap, although there were a couple of cameras there?

[pictures removed at Gareth's request - Admin]

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 9 February 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

where's the one in front of the daaaalston sign?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 9 February 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly it didnt come out right!

you managed to avoid the camera for the most part felicity, and i cut you out of that one above the sign, since i know you dont like to be in pics!

(mary has them all on cd if you want to go and see them, she has the bigger versions also)

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 9 February 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

nice!

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 9 February 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, I was starting to think that it was my imagination that Felicity was there with Mary.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 9 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

what did you think of the cds, felicity? how's the scott walker?

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 9 February 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Scritti Politti. Scott Walker, like jazz, is still above me but I will continue to work on being worthy. St. Etienne has never done it for me but I will also work on that.

toby, did you get a winter coat yet?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 9 February 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

St. Etienne has never done it for me but I will also work on that.

you help me with Baseball and I'll help you with St Etienne.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 February 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 February 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 February 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 February 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, thread revived to celebrate Anna and Toby's first anniversary thingy. Congratulations A&T.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, was this a year ago? It seems only a few months ago!

Mary & Felicity, (et al.) sorry I haven't written back but AOL is giving me horrendous problems with my email right now, sigh.

the river fleet, Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks matt!

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 18 January 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading back through this, it's like the quintessential FAP thread. It has everything - Sam Smiths beer, bar billiards, visiting Americans, random deviations, discussion of Spanish Bar and late night alternatives. I think it should be linked to for reference to new London Ilxers.

It seems amazing that there was ever a time that I was unaware of the existence of the Glasshouse Stores. I must have been there, like, 50 times in the interim.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 18 January 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, I wish we planned an anniversary visit. I miss you guys.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sad i missed this FAP - at the time i didn't know any of you except Matt - but i got to meet both Mary and Felicity later last year, which was excellent. annaversary (so clever!) cheers for toby and anna too :)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)
