[continued from Pt. 4 here. -- mod.] Time for Pt. 5, doncha think? Let's kick things off by looking at the early All Star vote numbers.

Here's the AL, and here's the NL.

The NL looks surprisingly spot-on to me (tho many of the second-place vote-getters should be starters), while the AL is disgustingly off the mark.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy fuck the ballots from NYC & Japan need to be BURNED.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yanc3y, please link the part 4 in the lead post kthxbye!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i ain't no mod! i can't do that. sorry 4 4getting

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

'sallgut.

javy lopez not in the top 5 NL catchers...

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Bernie Williams over like five other guys.

freakin' Giambi over Delgado.

I hate people.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So this year every team has to have one representative and the winner gets homefield in the World Series? Whatever, Mr. Selig... whatever.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That might change - he's done a good portion of his damage in recent weeks, so it might take a li'l while for the polls to reflect that. Also, Atlanta don't draw the fannies like they used to, so it's up to those TBS-lovin' folks outside of Hotlanta to punch the chads. And, y'know, those that can't stand to vote for Benito (right now the 2nd best catcher in the NL thanks to IRod's recent slumparooni).

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, fuck, Sosa over Pujols? Renteria over Furcal? I don't think so.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, doesn't every IP address get 5 online ballots to fill out? Let's start clicking!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But alotta Braves deserve to start for sures: Giles, Furcal, Sheff and A Jones are no-brainers.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's get Alex Sanchez a starting spot. Deal?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Joey Belle's NL All-Stars:
C: Benito Santiago
1B: man, I don't wanna vote for Bagwell - how about Richie Sexson?
2B: Marcus Giles (juuust over Vidro)
SS: Rafael Furcal
3B: Mike Lowell (juuust over Rolen)
OF: Barry Bonds (or Andruw) / Albert Pujols / Gary Sheffield

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex Sanchez can start IN MY POOP.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

So we write him in for catcher then?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Joey Belle's AL All-Stars:
C: fucking Jorge Posasa
1B: Carlos Delgado
2B: fucking Alfonso Soriano
SS: Alex Rodriguez
3B: Troy Glaus (but I want Hank Blalock)
OF: Aubrey Huff / Vernon Wells / Carl Everett (or fucking Raul Mondesi)

Pardon my goddamn language, BTW.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Write-in catcher vote = RAUL CASANOVA

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

NL Catchers dispute!

according to the ILX Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball Rank-O-Meter™:

Benito is #107th
Javy is #115th
I-Rod is #187th

all stats are season to date.

But conditionally, Benito is more valuable to the Giants since they're so injury plagued and he plays with 102-103 degree fevers and is an old man that can still hit long straightaway center.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

my ballot is at home unfortunately, i spent a whole N-Judah ride home thinking mine over the other night.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-b-b-b-b-but what about Wiki?!?!?

So, who will the Tigers, Pirates, Marlins and Padres send as their reps?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And he falls on his ass every time he swings. He's like a drunk or a whirligig or one of those beanie propellors. If he wasn't so damn lazy as a catcher I'd totally love him & his cocky "pay me what I'm worth" ways.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

My guesses...

Detroit: Dmitri
Pitt: Mike Williams
Marlins: Pudge
SD: Klesko???
TB: Huff

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Pirates = Kip Wells
Padres = Ryan Klesko
Marlins = Mike Lowell Mike Lowell and Mike Lowell
Tigers = Simba, the Lion King

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Ryan Bonderman?!?!??!?! (?!?!???!!?!?!)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bonderman has eaten 45 different bags of dick this year. He ain't goin. Yeah, yr right on Lowell. You think Kip Wells? His ERA and opposing BA are pretty tight, but he ain't got the wins!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Tigers should just send Al Kaline or Ty Cobb's great-grandson or Prince Fielder (loaned from the Brew Crew) in his dad's uni & save us all the trouble of having to deal w/ picking a Tiger.

I'm going w/ Kip, because of all the non-win stats. Mike Williams has been eating a fair amount of sausage, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I would go with Kip for that reason too, but as Clemens' Cy Young demonstrated a couple years ago, it's all about the W's.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

John Smoltz is the Tigers' rep every year.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Other chumpy teams:
Indians = C.C. Sabathia (ha ha does this count as 2 roster spots ha) or Ellis "Favorite Player Ever" Burks
Reds = Austin Kearns or Adam "Put Me In, Coach!" Dunn
Mets = Rey Sanchez's hair stylist or Bobby V. in the fake moustache
ChiSox = Magglio Ordonez (again) or that Loaiza guy
Royals = Mike Sweeney (w/ Carlos Beltran gaining on the outside) (& Raul Ibanez being the dark horse)

Of course, there has to be allowances made for Scoscia taking a slew of semi-worthy Angels, too - if he takes anyone else besides Salmon (& Glaus, if he's not voted in) (& maybe Fullmer, if the kid gets off the uppers & chills out), he'll have some 'splainin' to do.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

my votes:

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

No Aaron Boone for the Reds? And what about Coco Crisp for the Tribe?

Don't count out Hernandez for the Royals...

Blount I think our ballots are identical.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, the NL is going to win the home field advantage in the World Series.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

David Cone's gonna announce his retirement today....

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking sides: from the wind-up or from the stretch?

(You know me, and how I heart the relief pitchers.)

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no! Wade Miller on Yancey's bench! oh no!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I know! Yahoo didn't have the little carrot next to his name this morning to say he was pitching today, so I left him there! FUCKERS!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(and yes, i know i shoulda checked elsewhere but i'm a lazy fucker and this is my punishment)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You would have had 14K! My strikeout crown is tarnished.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 May 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

He almost struck out 4 in the ninth (passed ball)!

But Sammy popped out to end it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i may lose, but it's a moral loss! how does that hollow crown feel, ms. felicity?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(and lemme add: i gots 10 of yr dollars buring a hole in my pocket!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The crown feels like FOOL'S GOLD. My quest for 18th place continues.

Ha ha, I'll pay you the sawbuck (fin? whatever) next time I see you and save myself the interest.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 May 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

they are the toronto blue jays and they have come for your children!!

(it's the first time i've rushed home to catch the end of a jays game in years)

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 1 June 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Trade bait: I'm willing to get rid of Kenny Rogers and Tim Wakefield, probably not for much either.

Also: for anyone looking to swing a blockbuster: A-Rod might be on the block.

Make me some offers!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 2 June 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

0-fers: I fucked up. Meant to take the other Hernandez. You still down?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 2 June 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, Jeromy Burnitz in my starting OF! Oh no!

Leee (Leee), Monday, 2 June 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

CLEVELAND ONLY A GAME AND A HALF BEHIND THE SOX!!!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 2 June 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Please someone trade me anything for anybody.

hstencil, Monday, 2 June 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You rejected my last trade offer without even a counter-proposal or by-your-leave, so I am feeling too insecure to suggest anything.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 2 June 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

well that was weeks ago when I was feeling less desperate.

hstencil, Monday, 2 June 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, why don't you look at my roster and make me an opening offer?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 2 June 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

GET A ROOM YOU TWO

Leee (Leee), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I tried.

Leee, we should do that trade-and-release thing again.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry: who runs the 0-fers again?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 2 June 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

thas me!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that trade'll either make me or break me

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

james can we redo it with the right hernandez?

and gygax, if james is down, can you veto the existing pending trade please?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Stats I wish we had instead of the annoying CS: outfied assists & runners thrown out for catchers!! (Now back to the trade winds.)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I'm cool with that - gygax work your magic!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

F., I have Danny Graves ready to go again. Should I wait for you to pick up AGonz?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Or should we try to spice things up and invovle Spezio?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops sorry, i've been out of "commission"... trade is vetoed, send it again by 12 PST tonight please.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee, take any offer from lawrence. I swear you won't be sorry.

Bill Mueller (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

of kuip and kruk interest...

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

URGENT AND KEY:

The bat Sosa used has to actually be the bat of one of the following hitters: Eric Karros, Alex Gonzalez (April 2003 vintage), Mark Prior.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Reds are not quite choadsville. If they had ANY starting pitching, they could win that division, as is they are playing .500 ball with a borderline AAA starting staff. Danny Graves is seems to be getting the hang of being a starter, so maybe they have one good one.

After Larkin retires, which I think he will do, they will have some cash to get a decent #1 starter. They could have gotten Colon last year, but they didn't want to put out the cash.

The Reds bullpen is pretty good, it is just getting to the 7th inning that is their major problem. Their defense could be a better, Dunn, Kearns and Boone all strike out way too much and they could use a lead off man that has a high OBP, but they are closer than those other teams mentioned above.

If they can keep it close, they can win the game. The Reds did the same thing last year until the second half when their starting pitching turned into complete mush and their bullpen got strung out.

earlnash, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Sosa comes thru this ok.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Strikeout schmikeout. If the Reds want to succeed hitting-wise (because their starting staff is a distaster with a capital duh), they should get Sean Casey out of the lineup ASAP, play Adam Dunn & Jose Guillen every single ding dongin' day (w/ the hopes of some sucka team wanting to trade for Guillen, or maybe even Casey - get yr John Olerud Lite right hea!), find SOMEONE that can play SS (because neither Larkin nor Lopez has done a damn thing there, & if anyone shd get time out of those two walking sombreros, it's the latter, esp. since Lopez is The Future, God & errors willing), & let it be. None of this high falutin' Stanford thunkin' that Bob Boone uses so well (working his Reds managerial winning percentage to a whoppin' .450+, after the Yankees' stellar defensive prowess blew yet another game).

Saying Kearns strikes out too much is like saying water is too wet. And for the love of Erubiel Durazo, why the hell are you (that is, Mr. Boone) going out of your way to bench one of your best hitters (that is, Mr. Dunn) regardless of that stanky average asscrap when he's productive as hell & the options on your bench make Neifi Perez & Lenny Harris look like Tinker & Evers?

And, gygax!, WHY THE HELL is Felipe Alou sticking Marquis "Glue" Grissom in the leadoff spot? Does he like giving extra ABs to chumps w/ wacked out platoon splits (something Jim Tracy realized last year & exploited to Marquis' benefit, which is why he looked so purty to folks like the Giants this past offseason) in lieu of giving better hitters more opportunities to actually, y'know, hit? Also, to Edgardo Alfonzo - STOP SUCKING. (Yeah, that should work.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Still, the Reds beat the Yankees tonight.

hstencil, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Daver, Griss is hott the past couple weeks. Hitting like .400, especially gravy when Ray Ray was hurt. Plus, who're the Giants's bench hitters? Ruben "So Long" Rivera? Marvin "The Goat" Benard? Pedro "Baby Barry" Feliz, Torrealba and Galarraga can swing, but unfortunately don't play CF.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Alou should do a TLR & play Yorvitt (not Ourvitt) in CF! Adventures in Center-fielding! Look out for that flag pole, Yorvitt!

I don't care if Griss is making like Carlos Delgado on crack, he should be batting lower in the stinkin' lineup (& boy, batting JT anywhere in the Top 5 brings a whole lotta stink) while Ray Ray should be in the #1 hole come hell, high water, or shin splints. I have no problem playing MGD (tho full-time is pushing it - maybe 4-5 days out of 7), but having him lead-off makes as much sense as batting Dunn or Soriano there - if the guy is on, he's better off working his mojo w/ guys on base. Grissssss always looks like he's dogging it, too, and not dogging it like "you think I'm actually going to run out a grounder in the 9th inning of a 10-1 game skip?" but dogging it like "I have a 3 year contract in the bank & I was an All Star last century & that's gotta be a double and FUCK YOU UMP I was safe!"

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha i never liked him anyway. i knew that was a mistake.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

hey felicity how bout that trade - a-ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. looks like america hasn't gotten out of bed yet. WGN doesn't know how to handle this, it's a riot.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

This just confirms that Sammy Sosa is a twat.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

As John Kruk says, if you're not cheating, you're not trying. I love baseball.

http://slate.msn.com/id/2083857/entry/2083881/

A great roundtable that Blount linked to on ILM (gotta give the man credit)! Surowiecki's OTM in taking Beane to task for the Hinske and Pena deals (neither of which ever made much sense to me).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3, have you read Moneyball?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax!, have you?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no i haven't. but i'm gonna.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm gonna read it this weekend.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna have to wait until I can get it used

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My brother just got it for me.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

:-D

Was it your bday?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

He sent it as a thank-you for getting him addicted to baseball again. He also sent the Prospectus but as you can see I have not followed its wise dictates.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Task schmask (re: Beane). He flipped a hard-throwing relief-type guy to get Pena, & then flipped Pena to get a quality starting pitcher. Makes perfect sense to me (& I think I babbled about this on another FB thread.) As for swapping Hinske for Koch, perhaps he could've gotten something more for Mr. ROY, but I'm not sure many folks had Hinske on their radar (at least, from the literature I read back in the day), and the predominant thoughts re: assembling a poor man's effective bullpen is to have that #1 guy through which you effectively funnel a good # of innings, which is what Koch was (sometimes). Was the Koch / Foulke swap a money thing?

BTW, I'm only defending Beane on the off-chance he'll read this & give me a job in his administration. I'd make a great mascot - form of an elephant!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The bat Sosa used has to actually be the bat of one of the following hitters: Eric Karros, Alex Gonzalez (April 2003 vintage), Mark Prior

I am happy to see Karros doing surprisingly well in Wrigley. I don't know if it's Dusty or getting away from fair-weather Dogger fans or what. In a surprise move, Todd Hundley is on the DL. Am I ever happy he and Don Baylor are gone.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you side with Karros in the Karros vs. Choi debate?

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

where is the thread where they talk about EA MVP Baseball... i got this as a gift yesterday and i almost called in sick today!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(like you guys didn't know just how dorky i was)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

d00d, it's all about world series baseball

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, not really, I always want the giant Korean to play but then when they platoon Karros I'm like "OH NO! DOOM!" but then he winds up hitting a home run so then I don't mind him.

I was annoyed the Cubs were spending all this $$ on Karros, Miller and Grudz in the off-season instead of trying to work out something with Thome or (be still, my heart) Pudge but Patterson seems to be coming on as a toolsy CF so it's still interesting.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

easy f., you're like half an adjective away from complete jinx-speak.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

As you know, if there's one team that's not jinxed, it's the Cubs. With bench talent like Lenny Harris and Troy O'Leary they are sure to go all the way.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Why, gygax!, was it your birthday? I would have baked you a cake.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax you bastard - was it your birthday?

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Happy Birthday commisioner for life!

This whole corked bat episode really hit home last night when the bottle of wine I opened had a bunch of cork in it.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My neighbor, Corky, wore a bag over her head to work this morning because of the shame.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GYGAX!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it appears the cats out of Corkys bag and it's gygax's birthday.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GYGAX!!!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

eek! it's not my birthday! it's aways off! ;-D

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

where is that thread though... i think chris v. poops magee was involved. all of the baseball games were eval'd.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i found it and it was less baseball involved as i imagined but i just wanted to say that EA MVP is totally addictive.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you read about the Twinkie incident with Lance Berkman? Apparently the Bleecher Bums were using the Hostess treat to razz Lance about his (not-so)chiseled figure. During a pitching change, Lance had a fan drop down a couple of Twinkies. He ate one and put the other in his pocket. Using his new-found Twinkie Power, he smashed a 2-run bomb the very next inning.

i had to c/p this for y'all from another forum.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

[background-- he was an Astros fan visiting Wrigley for the first time, here's some more:]

Everybody that we talked to were pretty friendly. After the game, I got several guys shouting "Astros suck!" at me, all with a smile. We walked around to Waveland after leaving the stadium and some drunk guy acosted me, yelling "Astros fuckin' suck!" over and over again. Finally he came up closer to me and started yelling "Show me your balls!" I have no idea what that was all about. Some kind of Chicago tradition? Once we walked away, my friend suggested that I should have said, "I dare you to say that to me with all your teeth."

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 June 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, I'm all cried out (over you). I haven't got time for the pain. And, yes, one is the loneliest number.

hi leee i went to look for you but i got sidetracked by JT SNOW'S SPLASH HIT!!?!??!?!!?!!?

lots of warning track right field wall action for you but alas no straight away center ding dings for you. i thought benito's was gone but torii knew better than i.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 June 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha we went looking for a good hot dog when JT splashed. And I even told my friend, "Don't need to worry when JT's up to bat." Thanks for the (cursed) tix anyway!

Leee (Leee), Friday, 6 June 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing the posts about JT Snow hitting a homerun into the bay, what is the greatest baseball feat you have seen in person?

I saw Eric Davis when he was with the Reds rob Jack Clark of the Cardinals of two homeruns in the same game.

earlnash, Friday, 6 June 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Chacon managed to give up 12 ERs today.... sinonara ERA!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 7 June 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how AL managers (ok, maybe just Joe Torre) freak out during interleague play and pinch hit every time the pitcher's spot comes up so that by then end of the game the lineup and box score make it look like the game went 20 innings and putting the leadership of the AL East into the hands of

. . . Ruben Sierra! (or similar)

felicity (felicity), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

is roger clemens' bid for 300 like the most boring big baseball story ever or what?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I realize it's haterism but I am enjoying Clemens' struggles. Maybe he can go in the bullpen and try to get a W by coming on in middle relief.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the reverse-Bambino's curse!

Leee (Leee), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm enjoying it too. plus it's showing just how little correllation there is between the win stat and a pitcher's ability.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

quite unlike the very significant correlation between the fantasy win stat and fanatasy managerial ability. (right, gygax!?)

felicity (felicity), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

That was real fun watching a worthless tub-o-lard scrub like Juan Acevedo serve up a big ole meatball to a worthless scrub like Eric Karros. Baseball can be so banal sometimes.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

One pitch!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Baseball can be so banal sometimes."

Just like in the playoffs, the real clutch people you have to fear are folk like Francisco Cabrera, Bernie Carbo, Edgar Renteria, Brian Doyle, etc...

In the playoffs or world series it always seems to be some oddball that gets the game winning hit.

Luis Gonzales, Bobby Thompson, Kirk Gibson, Joe Carter were all good players, but none of them are going to the hall of fame.

(Kirby Puckett and Reggie are the only recent hall of famers that I can remember getting big hits in the series.)

Torre maybe over manages in those NL games, but I think it is funny how him and Scioscia can get better NL baseball out of their teams than the NL teams in the series.

I don't think Bobby Cox knows HOW to get one run at all when it is dire. It is just as much a killer as their bullpen.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

that totally grosses me out.

i may have to save the moneyball talk until this evening (when i am not on the phone and can string together cogent thought)

quite unlike the very significant correlation between the fantasy win stat and fanatasy managerial ability. (right, gygax!?)

i sense an inverse correlation between aaron w.'s studying time and his fantasy success. i'm not talking anything like the 2003 Royals, but a more human side of his players will emerge. i think. hope.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you see the blockbuster trade that went down last night?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Fittingly, Many Turgid Corpses has 7 players on the DL. How can this team still be ahead of me?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that always makes me feel good when I look at that roster. How long has he been benching Everett is my question?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's obvious the Corpse's are run by a madman. Does this league have an insanity clause? Maybe his daughter (or showgirl mistress) should start running the day to day operations.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

MTC are quite successful. Maybe it's an experiment to show diminishing returns of trade statistics or the Coase theorum or something.

Whatever. Stats are for losers.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It bugs me that I spend hours at the Pocket Town A&W trying to lift my teams spirts with root beer floats and coney dogs while the MTC's have 0 saves, four pitchers and Everett on the bench and are still whooping me.

The name of my book is Coneyball.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly there is no such thing as undermanaging.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

How long has he been benching Everett is my question?

MTC has not made any roster changes since before the league started (he dropped ben weber and jay witasick and picked up vlad nunez when f. dropped him.)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a minimum innings requirement in this league?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No min, max. Pepsi. Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No fair! He has the caught stealing and Errors categories locked up!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, and actually if he had never made any of his pitchers active, he could have locked up WHIP and ERA too!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Next thing you'll tell me is there's no bonus for being way ahead of pace for max innings pitched.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone is wondering why my defensive stats are so bad it is because the team is vegan and I make them play with pot lids instead of gloves.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone is wondering why my defensive stats are so bad it is because Nomar is fucking horrible in the field this year.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone's wondering why my team couldn't catch a cold, it's because I'm making my players use actual Gold Gloves. Clang indeed.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, Felicity, if you're in fear of exceeding your pitching limit, I'd be willing to take on one of your stiffer pitchers (like that Prior chump) in exchange for some hitting oomph.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm all about making ludicrous offers & suggestions (tho I don't actually OFFER them, in light of GlausBerkmanGate). Wha bout Mr. Kim for an OF?

These threads really should be more like the Winter Meetings, where GMs comingle and pitch trades and call each other names while drinking Mai Tais and lying to Peter Gammons. We've got the name calling thing down, so let's go!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Kim for an OF is actually something that could happen right now. Kim might become a closer I hear and you could have another precious Red Sox.

Haha, remember when I was going to trade Wells for Cedeno? That was awesome.

Orlando Merced, you ARE the weakest link.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 12 June 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rubber match" -- classic or dud?

I never heard this term before this season, and all of a sudden everyone's using it. What gives?

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 12 June 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

you're not alone:

rubber - "thing that rubs," 1536, from rub. The meaning "elastic substance from tropical plants" (introduced to Europe 1744 by Charles Marie de la Condamine) first recorded 1788, so called because it was originally used as an eraser. Meaning "overshoes made of rubber" is 1859, Amer.Eng.; slang sense of "condom" is from 1930s. Sense of "deciding match" in a game or contest is 1599, of unknown origin. Rubberneck (n.) is attested from 1896.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 12 June 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

er, Leee I think you are alone!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 12 June 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So the odds of Steinbrenner firing Torre before the end of the season are...?

I think that Jeter has 30 Ks or so since becoming captain. Nice one.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 12 June 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Do not bad mouth Captain Babyface.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

so in my other league a dude wants sheff from me. he's offering abreau and any of his pitchers, who include: clement, maddux, lowe and reuter. waddayall think?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

he's nuts.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, he just offered maddux and abreau. should i push for lowe instead?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

is it that you are trying to fill plug up some gaps in your weaker stats (SP?) or do you think shef's days are #'d?

spill the beans yanc3.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i think shef's due for a dropoff, plus my pitching staff is ailing with injuries right now. my current team:

Lo Duca
Ibanez
Vidro
Aaron Boone
Guillen
Ensberg
Berkman
Giles
Sheffield
Payton
Contreras
D'Amico
Gagne
Ishii
Lidle
Washburn
Worrell
Zito

Those are my starters. On my bench I have:

Castilla
Marlon Byrd
LeCroy
Estes

And on the DL:

Beckett
Milton

And in the Minors:

Borchard
Harden
Rafael Soriano

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

So yeah, Contreras (who's on the DL) and D'Amico are weak spots that Maddux would definitely help. And Bobby doesn't seem like much of a drop from Shef...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the metrics of your league? 5x5 or more sophisto?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd look for someone with better pitching to deal Shef for. Maddux has been erradux. Ask for more then you expect to get.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

nice fucking outfield by the way.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a head to head league. Points-based.

Maddux has been erratic, but his last few starts have been strong...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Clement Clement Clement Clement and, oh yeah, Clement, if you ARE going to make that trade (which I wouldn't, were I the other guy) (as if I can talk).

This is a keeper league, too, isn't it, Yanc3? If so, then go for the youts (DLo or MattC). Lowe would be fine, too, and he is currently playing for a team that'll score 8-9 runs on a bad day. However, like I said before, Clement X 5 + 1. Even if his last 2 great starts have been against the DRays & the Redbreasts.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What if I went Clement and Reuter? And then tossed in one of my pitchers?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

May I take this opportunity to compliment you on your Jarrod Washburn. He's doing well.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Then he'd be a mental case. What's his team look like (if I may ask)? Also, I can't speak as well on the subject as gygax! or any other left coasters, but I'd be wary of bringing Woody onto your team.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Oh, Yanc3y? Yeah, he's a good kid. I like the cut of his Vidro."

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

His team sucks, but he has a better record than me. (i'm in last place in my division) his squad:

Varitek
Gibbons
Castillo
Randa
Alex S Gonzalez
Aramis Ramirez
Abreu
Garrett Anderson
Floyd
Patterson
Clement
Guardado
Lowe
Maddux
Penny
Radke
Reuter
Urbina

With Koch and Padilla on the bench

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Why the hell is he making a trade? Abreu's been scuffling (until recently), so to try & "upgrade" w/ Sheffield given his OF (is that Corey Patterson or the DBacks pitcher) at the expense of castrating his pitching staff makes absolutely no sense. (Man, it's so easy when it's NOT my team...)

That IF looks wretched, tho. Alex S is the Cubs' Gonzalez, right? Were I him, I'd be looking for a SS or 1B.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno why he's making it. And yeah, that's Corey & Alex from the Cubs. So I don't wanna ask for too much. But seriously, I think Maddux would gimme more than Clement this year. I wouldn't protect either for next season.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Would you keep Lowe?

Each of the 3 has drawbacks:

Maddux = Methuselah (sic?), very erratic from start to start, sketchy bullpen between starters & Smoltzie, w/ very slim chance of Braves' offense finally playing down to expectations (i.e. Furcal & Sheffield need to stop corking)

Clement = very erratic within starts (that damn Bad Inning), Cubs' lineup one injury away from Tiger/Dodgerdom, Cubs' defense as bad as offense could be

Lowe = those wacky home / road splits, bad sinker = he's sunk, that bullpen NEEDS Rolaids, the slight offchance that the BoSox go 0-for-a-month to lower their team BA below .300

Either way, if the guy's willing to trade, it's your obligation to rob him blind.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, Yanc3, have you seen what Marlon Byrd's done recently? He's gone nutz!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I wanna start Byrd but my OFs just too good!

I agree with yr assessments of the trio. I personally think I'd be robbing him blind by taking any of those three. If you had to choose one, you'd take Clement? For the "upside" (hello, Mr. Kiper!) potential?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to go to the Yankees/Cards game on Saturday. Dave, I buy you a ticket if you give me an OF.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I don't think I'd keep any. Next year we keep five players. My keepers would probably be: Gagne, Zito, Berkman, Giles & Abreu.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Felicity, I'm going to that game! I believe me & my compadres will be sitting in the nosebleed not-skybox seat things on the 1B side. We are praying that KKKKKlemens' start gets pushed back - I wanna have the opportunity to start a ROOOOOGER! chant (cf. that Pedro / Clemens playoff game in ... '99, was it?). More information as it becomes available (as I'm going out to a) see _The Italian Job_ or b) go grocery shopping or c) spend 2+ hours at Circuit City staring at stuff I can't buy).

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

David I need to get ya that Trojan box still... (sorry i've been mia)

So big controversies in my other league. This one team, who was very good last year, has totally sucked this season and their owner is panicking. Earlier he traded away Shawn Green for Joel Piniero and Richard Hidalgo, despite the fact that he got a lot better offers for Green (he wanted no less than Gagne and Payton from me for him!). So today he's decided to trade away Manny Ramirez for Bartolo Colon and Jae Seo. What a fool.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh good, you already have tix -- possibly averting cheating/bribery accusations from the league (it is the Chicago way) but yeah, keep me posted on that and your pending trade offers, hm.

Don't think I didn't note the OF : ticket :: Babe Ruth : "No No Nannette" parallel, FRed.

UPDATE: I bought 2 CDs, but before I could go grocerying, my neck started to stiffen, so I retired to my abode. My final line: 5 IP, 6 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 H, 1 K (stupid defense).

Bonds on playing in Chicago:

But [Bonds] did manage to work in a bit of criticism regarding Wrigley Field into this discussion.

"They say this (U.S. Cellular Field) is a nice ballpark," he said. "They say the stadium's kind of odd, but the field itself is nice. I don't sit in the stands, I play in the field, so that's the only thing I worry about.

"But Wrigley Field needs a change. It's too loppy."

Loppy? Bonds made a dipping motion with his hand, indicating that the playing field was sloped too much.

"They need to level it out," he said. "The whole field."

The field was sloped for purposes of drainage, Bonds was told.

"They need to level it out," Bonds repeated firmly. One of the Chicago writers was mystified by this information.

"How long you been going to games at Wrigley Field?" Bonds said. Twenty years, was the response.

"And you don't know?" Bonds said. "You ain't watching then."

But the Wrigley Field press box, Bonds was assured, seemed to be level.

"That's all that matters," Bonds replied.

Great story!

So I need my fellow ILBers to vote. Who do I take: Lowe, Maddux or Clement?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

DLo! No, Clement! OK, I vote for NOT taking Maddux.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Is SO a stat in your league? If so, you know what I think.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 12 June 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Pitching scoring:

BS - Blown Saves -2
ER - Earned Runs -1
INN - Innings 1
K - Strikeouts (Pitcher) 1

SO - Shutouts 10
W - Wins 10

Now I'm thinking I want Padilla too. As icing on the cake. Maybe I'll throw in Ishii or something.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote against the trade, y'all are nuts.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 June 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not, gygax?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Padilla's just as spotty & inconsistent as those other cats, but he's also on a team that Can Score Lots of Runs, and he's also got an awful bullpen behind him. And there's the Larry Bowa factor to consider. Note that while Padilla has stunk most of the season, his last outing (a good 'un) was against the Acute Angles.

Pitchers ranked by DRAP (Derived Runs Allowed Percentage):
Clement, Lowe, Padilla, your mother, my mother, my mother's mother, my mother's father's 2nd cousin's roommate's horse's trainer's sister, Maddux.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 June 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine Felicity ranks Maddux 1st because he's all cute & fuzzy like a Vermont Teddy Bear.

3) small bear

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Are those Ws only for starter Ws? Clearly I meant Ks and not SO, and so of the two I like Clement, although Lowe is also adorable and so either of them can sit next to Zi70.

Maddux is funny, too. He's always cursing.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Wins for anyone, not just starters. It's down to Lowe and Clement. Chicago's got a better bullpen but no run support, Lowe's got the run support but no bullpen. I'm thinking Lowe.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Just imagine Clement's ERA without the benefit of that lucky rainout. Ay carumba.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote for Lowe... he seems to have turned the corner this season (he had a small growth on his nose removed, having had a history of skin cancer, but it was benign... I think it was a distraction). He prolly won't ever have a season as good as last year, but Clement is too spotty and looked pretty awful the past month.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm... I like it, but I kinda like the Prior more. Do you think I can afford it?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yanc3y, sheffield has at least 2 years left (look at his workout partner who is 4 years older than him). he is more consistent then abreu (obviously) and is playing as good as ever. why risk it?

if you need pitching, I'd trade payton and worrell (you get your saves from gagne anyway and worrell's days are much more #'d than sheffield) for someone more affordable. i don't think the guy proposing the trade would be that interested... he's looking for a stud (ie, not payton) AND he has urbina but i think worrell might still be an attractive offer while his stock is high.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(i mean, i think there's a reason why Bonds AND Sheffield are defying father time and that reason is their offseason training regimen at stanford. if you think shef's tailing off or due for an injury or his luck is running out, i'd like to hear a bit about that).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 June 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Sheff can keep his current pace, mainly cuz:

a) The injury bug
b) The Braves offense ain't that great
c) He's been playing out of his gourd

I don't think Abreu is a big drop off from Sheff. He's played not so hot thus far (which goes for the Phillies as a whole) and he's much younger. In addition, I need pitching help, which Lowe definitely gives me.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 13 June 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

welp. what can you say? The best player to ever play the game proved why he is the best player to ever play the game.

*hands rubber to Leee and gygax!*

Funny thing is Bonds struck out the first three AB's, and I have to believe that's the only reason Colon pitched to him. So of course, Bonds tattoos the first pitch. It's a tough situation, what do you do? I would've walked him, but Colon's your ace and Manuel is probably scared of him anyway.

Anyway, we've learned that Barry likes U.S. Cellular field. Should be a fun home-run-derby/all-star game.

< /concession>

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 13 June 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Diamond, one word: OUCH.

Just got back from the game. Many are pissed at Manuel for letting Colon pitch to Bonds, but I thought it was a decent option, considering his 3 K's earlier in the game. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to one great player besting another great player.

But man, what an ugly 9th. As soon as Marte gave up the grannie, we wuz outta there...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i have to hand it to you, mr. diamond: colon was on fire. even when he got roughed up in the 9th his pitch count was still under 100.

i love how the giants and alou tell the press that they've changed from a power team to a small ball team. and it was nice to see my #1 draft pick wipe the puke from his chin (he's been out with the stomach flu which has decimated the giants locker room/dugout... apparently that's f-rod's excuse for blowing the game last night) to hit a grand slam (for some reason i left richie in my lineup).

I don't think Bonds is going to the all-star game though... Bobby B. has a brain tumor and is battling lung cancer and is no longer mobile. Barry has mentioned that his intention is to spend time with his father during the break.

David R., you're Alou. Would you bench Alfonzo and start Feliz? This reminds me of the Marvin Bernard situation when he started stnking several years ago (currently paid $4.2M to pinch hit at the mendoza line: .205).

yanc3, tell me more about why/how the Braves offense "ain't that great."

But alotta Braves deserve to start for sures: Giles, Furcal, Sheff and A Jones are no-brainers.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

And about the Only Game That Matters today: I'm sure Bonds intentionally whiffed 3 times -- he's so good that he knew he'd get the chance to tie the game in the ninth.

As far as Bonds at the All Star game, I read in the papers that he's planning on being there.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I mean common sense says you walk Bonds. I would have, but you pitch to him and worst scenario you are tied. Well, we got the worst scenario, and Colon should have been gone after that. Colon was really cruising too. It's a shame, but Bonds is the best in the game. Man, first pitch though! I at least was looking forward to a fun, tension-filled at-bat!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

First pitch swinging = what makes me think Bonds planned the whole thing.

Possible explanation on Colon cruising up to 9th but not after: Joe Nathan had a long bottom 8th, so Colon had to sit on his duff and maybe cooled off.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm getting gygax!'s question because of my Alfie boosting, aren't I? Were I Alou, and Alfie's doing what he's doing, then, yes, I'd go w/ Feliz until he shits the bed. Is he still hitting Grissom lead-off? I'd fix that shit, too.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 13 June 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna get Moneyball too.

The Braves right now have a lineup that's playing far above its expectations. Do you really expect Javy Lopez to hit 50 HRs? Do you think Marcus Giles will hit 40? You don't foresee their bats cooling off?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And this comes from a guy who's gonna make $10 off of felicity thanks to the Braves!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Whenever I talk to Yanc3 it somehow winds up costing me money. Grr . . . I am told the predictor formula of total runs scored divided by total runs allowed still should have the Philbillies on pace to challenge but yeah what is with this Braves offense? Nobody told Marcus Giles he's supposed to suck?

Of course it's nice to have Smoltz around to turn off the lights but I liked the little Eric Gagne piece last night. Is it a forkbal-- NO IT'S A CIRCLE CHANGE! Those are some gaudy stats, rowr.

I read another 2 pages of Moneyball on the subway this a.m. like a good little ILB-bot. Book club next week.

Funny Bonds quotes. "A superstar could get injured on his home run trot in this historic park. It needs to be fixed," he repeated, firmly.

Yeah, I thought of g! when I saw that Aurilia hom run. I didn't notice the new shave but I noticed Billy Wagner's when they interviewed the Astros no-hitter guys. Also, Neutral Milk Dotel is very intimidating when he speaks.

I didn't understand the 6-pitcher no-hitter. Why did they change pitchers all the time if they were all no-hitting?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

So I know none of you really care about the shit in my other league, but the drama right now is so fucking entertaining I've gotta share. So there was the brouhaha over the Manny-Colon-Seo deal, which turned into the two guys who are making the trade offering VERY personal insults to other guys in the league on our message board. Someone's wife was mocked. No shit. And lots of "Fuck you" and "Why did I join this league" and all sorts of rhetoric. Crazy stuff. Things had calmed down, but one owner wrote an article posted to our homepage shortly ago, which should fan the flames even more. Here it is:

Gentlemen, welcome to an impromtu JaJ #4. First draft, no revisions, written pretty quickly. If I missed something, misspelled everything or just don’t make sense, go easy on me. With all the controversy surrounding the newest trade, I figured this would be a prime opportunity to practice my essays for my ESL class. I read on the boards, in between all the name calling and complaining, that Joe and Sully wanted to hear from someone who objected to the trade. Ok. Hi. I objected. How’s it going? So, I figured, what the fuck, you want an explanation, and I’m not shy, why not write another article. You wanna know why I think this trade is objectionable? Fine with me. Perhaps this will spark a little more discussion on the boards that extends past, “Fuck you.” Remember, this is why I objected the trade. I’m not speaking for anyone else. Let’s start from the top.

1. Manny Ramirez- Top 10 player overall, especially in keeper leagues. Arguably the best OF in the AL. Arguably one of the best hitters in the game. Consistent and young. First round pick, hands down. This is the guy you make the foundation of your team. By the way, in 120 games last season, Manny hit .349 with 33 HR’s and 107 RBI’s. That’s right, 120 games. But you already knew that, didn’t you. I won’t get into his other stats, because I’m sure you’ve already heard . . . he’s amazing. Yes, he’s had some injury troubles in the past (last year’s being a fluke). But he’s healthy and really, really fucking good. Especially in that Boston lineup. Again, this guy is valuable, but in a keeper league, this guy is REALLY valuable.

Ok, I needed to get that out of the way. So Joe wants an ace pitcher. Hey, that’s fine. Trade Manny. It’s your team. Trade everyone if you want. But when you get Bartolo Colon and some no-name prospect experiencing a modicum of success for one of the best hitters in the game, that’s just not a fair deal. It’s not fair to yourself Joe, it’s not fair to the competitive balance to the rest of the league. That’s why we’re all annoyed. Please, if I were to trade Arod to Travis for Kyle Lohse and Casey Fossum, I’m sure people would flip. Keep that in mind. Or even better. If a struggling team like the Phil Zone (sorry Phil, no offense) were to trade Smoltz to Pingicer for Odaliz Perez and Brett Tomko, both of you (Sully and Joe) would be livid, stammering on the boards, CAPS LOCK KEY JAMMED INTO YOUR KEYBOARD!!! COMMON YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE!!!

2. Bartolo Colon- So, anyway, Colon is not worth Manny. He’s just not. I'll tell you why in a second. Relax. He had a great season last year, but that’s not enough to make this deal even close to balanced. Before that, he was above average, but never great. Manny has had a great career. Joe mentioned on this board that to say Colon isn’t an ace because of his bad start this season is dumb. Well, he’s right. Then again, one has to actually think that he was really an ace pitcher before 2002 to begin with. I’d like to call last season, “the Miracle Year.” Let’s look at the numbers, shall we?

Bartolo’s debut was in 1997 where he posted a 5.65 ERA in 17 GS. No big deal. Chalk it up to being a rookie. The next season, he posted a 3.71 ERA, nice. Unfortunately, that ERA rose every single season, topping out at 4.01 in 2001. Did I also mention the walks? Those went up too. Not a straight increase (there was a slight dip, then rise), but since his debut (excluding his 2002 season), walks rose from 70- 98 a season. But his innings went up (one might say, in a desperate attempt to retort), but when you look at his overall WHIP, that went up too, topping off at a Steve Trachsel-esque 1.396 in 2001. I don’t know many aces with a 1.396 WHIP. A WHIP that high is never a good sign. But that’s ok, because he’s a strike out pitcher, right? Well, he was, in 2000 and 2001. For those two seasons, he K’d over 200 batters. But in all his other seasons, including “the Miracle Year”, Mr. Colon fanned a maximum of 161 batters. Last season, well, he was legit, now wasn’t he? 8 complete games, as opposed to a career high of 3. He also chalked up 20 wins. But this year? What happened? A poor start sure, against the Tigers, Royals, a then-lowly Twins team, ohhhh and the Indians. Will the real Bartolo Colon please stand up? Oh that’s right, he’s not done eating. Weight was another issue that plagued him throughout his career. This year too. He came into camp looking like he ate Jake. And his listed age is 30. Riiiiiight. As it stands now, he’s on pace to go 15-12 with 156 K’s. Interesting, because in 2001, right before the Miracle Year, he went 14-12. Good pitcher? Definitely. Very good pitcher? I would say that. Proven ace status? Hardly.

Oh, and by the way, Colon is currently the 6th highest scoring pitcher on Sully’s staff.

3. Ace status- To me (and this is purely subjective), ace status in fantasy baseball is defined as, “Could this guy be my #1 starter and really hold together my rotation?” Pedro, R.J., Schilling, Zito, Hudson, Oswalt, etc. Those are aces. I seriously doubt anyone would feel very comfortable with their pitching staff if Bartolo Colon was the #1 starter. He’s a tier two starter. Regardless of what the fantasy magazines say (he wasn’t top-10 in my preseason rankings . . . just as a frame of reference, my “sources” said Esteban Loaiza would be the 72nd best pitcher in the AL. Well done.) Don’t go by the Fantasy Sports Illustrated’s of the world. Colon and Seo is not enough for Manny. A tier two starter and a random prospect isn’t enough, it just isn’t. How is this not obvious?

Shit, even the White Sox don’t feel comfortable with Colon as their #1 guy.

4. Shady dealings- So, trades should only be objected if there is suspicion of shady dealings? Funny that you wrote that Sully. Well, I’m not accusing anyone of anything. But, there’s the huge imbalance already (in my opinion), there’s the fact that you two are good friends, and Joe’s team is pretty much done for the season, and hmm, Joe had actually gotten better offers for Manny that he passed up. (and not from me either, so you can squelch that theory. Although it is interesting to note that the price for me and Paire, and possibly others, was MUCH higher than what Manny was ultimately traded for.) Interesting. Maybe a sunshine deal? Maybe not. Now, again, this may sound like I’m screaming foul, but I’m not. You two seem like legit guys. But since I already don’t like this deal due to its imbalance, and there might be a 1% chance of shadiness here, I hit object.

5. Trade ethics- On a side note. Sully, please. Save us the bullshit. You arguing about trade ethics is like a Nazi fighting to stop racism. Your nonsensical diatribe falls upon deaf ears when you argue about fair review process. From someone who protests every trade because of a grudge, we don’t need to hear it. We aren’t objecting because we’re bitter. We’re objecting because the trade isn’t fair. Again, not because one side wins. It’s because one side wins too much.

6. “He’s the best pitcher on the Mets”- This is my favorite argument. Best pitcher status. Seo is the best pitcher on the Mets. That’s great. It’s like having your choice of syphyllus, ghonnorea or AIDS. And by the way, I’d take Glavine or Leiter over Seo 10 out of 10 times. The season actually extends into October, not mid-June. Then again, Seo’s sure to develop into an ace, what with the long standing tradition the Mets have of developing young pitchers . . . oh, wait. Prospects like Seo are a dime a dozen. He’s experiencing some success now, but who knows? Guys like Jason Marquis, Casey Fossum, etc. all come up, get hot, do well, then struggle. Saying that Seo makes this trade fair is a joke. Oh, and just because Colon is the ace of the White Sox, doesn’t make him an ace fantasy pitcher.

Does that help? Is that enough. In the end, it’s your own teams. We have the right to object, just like the two of you do (and use, I might add). It’s nothing personal. This is not a personal attack on either of you. These opinions are strictly my own. You wanted to “hear from someone who objected the trade” and find out why. Well, I’ve told you. Hey, and I could be wrong. Colon could turn into the next Roger Clemens. Joe, maybe you know something we don’t. I hope I’m wrong and this turns out fair. But as of yesterday, this trade wasn’t fair, and that’s why I objected.

Did I mention that Manny is on pace for 40 HR's and 130 RBI's? But that's nothing new.

Seo’s gonna have to win a lot of games to make up for that.

. . . and all this is why Carl Everett believes this trade should have been objected.

‘Till next time,
-GA

my season's done in my $$$ league. fourth in the league in scoring, second worst record. fucking head to head leagues. what young players should i nab? right now i'm working on a payton-for-odalis perez deal. asshole owner still hasn't responded to the sheff trade. fuxor.

one tiny thing that bothered me is that the whole "selling jeans" thing is never properly explained (perhaps it was never explained properly to mr. lewis).

he touches on it a little bit on page 57 but i think his research was a little light. kindly note, this could be my slanted perspective.

btw, i hate head to head leagues.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

In that the chances of me winning the whole thing are slim. I'm eight games back of my division leader, and while with us playing two games a week it's possible to catch up, I'm not feeling it. I'm getting frustrated with my team...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If you can get Odalis Perez for Jay Payton, then you are doing something right. If the Dodgers can actually get someone to start HITTING in that lineup of theirs, then they'll be doing something right, too.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

aha! i am ignorant of this "tv commercial" subject of which you speak.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - I mean, I'm not sure - it could date to earlier! But yeah it was Maddux and Glavine pumping iron and hitting the batting cages, and it ended with them looking at each other saying "Chicks dig the long ball!"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

from Dan Patrick's book, Outtakes:

Dan Patrick: Greg Maddux says the sound of a homerun is two cars crashing. How would you describe it?
David Cone: Like dropping a stack of dishes.
DP: Do you know the sound, though, as soon as you throw it?
DC: Yeah. You know the sound.
DP: Do you cringe?
DC: And you snap your head back. And maybe it's instinctual, for whatever reason, you know it's gone but you still snap your head back to watch it as if there is a chance it might stay in.
DP: That's for effect, for TV. To make it seem like "Oh, did he get all of that?"
DC: Mark Gubicza had it down. He's just put his head down. He knew right away. The best I've ever seen. He'd give up a homerun and immediately his dauber was down. He didn't even watch it.
DP: Do you watch baseball? If you are not playing do you care about baseball?
DC: Yes. Very much. I want to know what Maddux is doing to get those guys out. I want to know all the secrets, all the tricks.
DP: What can you pick up from watching a game?
DC: Style. Strategy. Patterns. Watch Greg Maddux's pattern. How he gets out tough lefties.
DP: Best pitcher of this era. Would he be among three guys you would say defined your era's starting pitching?
DC: Certainly , Clemens and Maddux have defined our era, I believe. And Randy Johnson is right behind them and still going.
DP: Do chicks dig the long ball?
DC: Most definitely. Chicks do dig the long ball.
DP: They don't dig striking out the guy who can hit the long ball?
DC: They are not digging ground balls. (Laughs.) Managers dig ground balls. Umpires dig ground balls and two hour games. Chicks don't dig that.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yesterday I think i made the stupidest trade possible. I traded A-Rod and Shawn Chacon for Tejada and Kerry Wood. It may not be bad if:

1. A-Rods knee gives out
2. Tejada returns to MVP form
3. I have crap for K's and could use them.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Chris, you didn't sign Steve Phillips as yr GM did you?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, its a risk worth taking though. IF Tejada returns to form.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

How is it a risk worth taking? Even Tejada in top form is way below ARod on cruise control. But Chacon -> Wood is a nice step up.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

NO IT'S NOT!

Holy crap ARod beats the pants off of any shortstop EVER not named Banks or Wagner (Honus, that is), & even Tejada @ MVP-level can't match what ARod does @ 75% (barring injury). And swapping Wood (k-rad 2nd-in-command for the division-leading Cubs) for Chacon (one-off out-of-ass dood throwing meatballs 50% of the time @ Mile High) is quite questionable as well. I really hope this works out for ya, Poops, but the cards, they are stacked against ye. (And am I correct in reading that you're trading Wood away because you NEED K's?) (Yanc3 are you on the crack, too?)

But, Chris, lemme tell you, if there's anyone else here that knows how you feel, it's me. Sure, you think you pulled a fast one, taking a bit of a chance in swapping some underperforming studs for guys on the upswing, but then people (like me & Yanc3) get on yr case, and then you think it over, & then you start to doubt the trade, & then the weeping and gnashing of teeth begins, and then you're left aping Heston, pulling off your t-shirt Hulk Hogan style while on yr knees (cf. Dafoe in _Platoon_), eyes towards the very fickle gods o' baseball, screaming "DAMN YOU DIRTY APE BASTARDS! LET MY PEOPLE GO!"

& then, if you're me, you go downstairs, put a BBQ Chicken pizza in the over, & clip your fingernails while waiting to get yr unemployment check so's you can buy some comix @ 2 PM. I love New Release day.

PS - Someone give me a job.

& while I should really stop while I'm behind, I'll comment on Yanc3's thing:

You HAVE Boonie, don't you? Odalis is pitching like asscrap (& I shd know, as I'm suffering through his shenanigans in my sans-Berkman league) (& hey, GO DODGERS w/ that fearsome offense featuring an infield that's probably hitting a buck sixty on all cylinders) (& can you believe someone in my other league dropped Sean Burroughs to PICK UP Adrian Beltre? that's like pushing away sushi to eat liver & onions!) & Casey is ballz (see my team name) (& his stats), but trading Boonie while he's hott & sexxy is U&K.

BTW, Glausie is on an 0-for-25 streak. It's the little, tiny, miniscule things that matter.

im gettin WOOD.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's what sparked my interest in Perez:

A Tale of Two Pitchers: Here's an exercise that Rob Neyer used to do a lot: Of the two pitchers listed, which one would you rather have going into the middle of June?

IP HR/9 SO/9 BB/9 GB/FB
Pitcher A 102.0 0.97 7.24 4.06 1.12
Pitcher B 76.1 1.30 7.31 2.00 2.06

All things considered, probably Pitcher B. Right? Though he gives up home runs more frequently than his counterpart, the slightly better K rate, significantly better walk rate, and the outstanding ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio makes him a distinctly more valuable commodity, going forward. Sure, he'll have to go feed his gopher now and then, but chances are that the bases will be empty when that finally happens.
So why is it, then, that reality has rendered this result?

ERA
Pitcher A 2.74
Pitcher B 4.72

In a word: luck. You see, while Pitcher A has been slightly less effective at controlling the fielding-independent categories--walks, strikeouts, and home runs allowed--he's been significantly more effective at "controlling" the fielding-dependent category of hits allowed...which is to say, he's been lucky. Check it out:

H/9 AVG BIPR
Pitcher A 6.35 .198 .225
Pitcher B 9.90 .276 .316

For the record, a league-average pitcher will allow a BIPR (a.k.a. batting average allowed on balls in play) of about .290. Pitcher A, as I'm sure you've noticed, is 65 points below that level, while Pitcher B is roughly 25 points above that level. That, my friends, is a big, frickin' difference.
What's most interesting about this breakdown, however, is the respective identities of Pitchers A and B. Pitcher A, you see, is none other than Hideo Nomo, currently fourth in the league in ERA and 10th in the league in WHIP, while Pitcher B is none other than Odalis Perez, currently 41st in the league in ERA and 26th in WHIP.

The thing of it is, one year ago, Odalis Perez was in the same position that Nomo is right now: near the top of the league in ERA, despite good-but-not-great peripherals. As Joe Sheehan pointed out in July of last year, Perez received more than his share of defensive help in 2002, allowing a BIPR of just .228 going into the All-Star break, and .247 overall. Sure, Perez didn't walk a soul, but that can only take you so far; a much larger part of the equation was the absurdly low number of hits he allowed.

This year, however, the world's been turned upside down. Perez has spent most of this season getting hammered eight ways from Sunday, allowing a significantly greater number of extra-base hits than he did a year ago. Sure, his walk rate is up a little bit (from 1.70 BB/9 to 2.00 BB/9), but it's still among the lowest in the NL. It's that league-high BIPR that's made the difference.

That said, look for Perez to show some improvement in the second half of 2003. If there's one lesson we can learn from this little exercise, it's that a pitcher's luck can--and often will--change in a New York minute.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That's from Baseball Prospectus.

3. Bobby Abreu (RF)

wawawaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Abreu's leading off because of his OBP, which is a fine idea, except that Abreu's also one of the team's best run producers, & with Burrell dropping trou, you need folks to get folks home as much as you need folks to get on base so folks can get them home. Rollins has an OBP around .310, which is godawful, but why throwing him into the 6 spot makes sense does not compute in my head. Polanco might seem like an OK candidate, but his OBP is only .332. Actually, THE BEST leadoff option right now (assuming Bowa still has his OBP woody at full mast) would be to ride Marlon Byrd like a coffee-carrying donkey.

Same thing goes for Boone Senior & getting Adam Dunn ABs at the top of the Reds order. Yo, Bob, if you're reading:

1. Jose Guillen (CF)
2. Aaron Boone (2B)
3. Ken Griffey Jr. (LF)
4. Austin Kearns (RF)
5. Adam Dunn (1B)
6. Jason LaRue (C)
7. Brandon Larson / Russell Branyan (3B)
8. Felipe Lopez (SS)
9. any non-Red pitcher

Ride or die w/ the kids, Cincy. You play Barry Larkin, you're only playing yourself. & there has to be SOMEONE desperate enough for a 1Ber (hey, Mr. Casey) to possibly throw some pitching prospects at the Smallpark. (See: San Diego? Dodgers? Baltimore?) (Heh - I'm assuming Baltimore has pitching prospects that aren't eligible for AARP benefits. That's funny.)

And I don't hate Asians, unless they're Commies, and those red-faced hippie free-love bastards can suck my sump pump.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 June 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

{Moneyball Gripes}

Jeremy Brown - the "fat" catcher from Alabama who draws so many walks(leading to a high OBP), drawing the attention of A's asst. GM Paul DePodesta.

If you are an opposing coach, do you walk this guy, then you get the next batter to hit an infield grounder (after big curves at the corner to prevent bunting him over) and you have about 60 seconds to get a double play as Brown waddles his way to 2nd.

I never saw him play, but if he is as slow as the say he is, his inflated OBP isn't too hard to imagine.

The thing about Grant is, the Magic want him to retire so they can get an injury exception and his contract comes off the books in 2005. I guess him and his agent weren't very happy about the Magic saying he's not gonna play... but geez, who can blame them. Best NBA trade ever, btw.

aaron's baseball blog totally ripped into joe morgan. this kid (i think he's 19) is a pretty good read if you can keep up with his updates, he likes stats too.

The only way I'll be impressed is if they end up with three 20-game losers.

Pretty impressive that they were both drafted by the Cubs.

!!!

Actually, isn't Willis going against Mets pitching wunderkind (ooo look out!) Aaron Heilman tonight? That's good eatin'.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Is he? Pay attention to Yankee prospect Brandon Claussen's first ML start on Saturday (supposedly). He's rumored to be a top dawg. (I hope so, I got him stashed in my minor league spot... bye bye Joe Borchard!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: Javy Lopez is on the trading block for a top 1B. I'm entertaining offers!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yankee prospect" = "trade bait for over-the-hill veteran" = Claussen will win 20 games for the 2006 ChiSox, while erstwhile bullpen specialist Rick White (or is Gabe the White on the Sox?) will be buying yet another round-trip ticket to Columbus. GO GEORGE GO!

And, BTW, kudos on Alfie for busting his hump over to 1st base yesterday & allowing the tying run to score. Nothing like putting the DUH in funDUHmentals. Watching Cubs games = watching a loved one die of scurvy (except during the 7th inning stretch). BTW, since I have to mention the Red Sox, watching NESN promote their roundtable sportstalk discussion show = watching the YES Network sell sweatpants & shortstops.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I love how late June has become Trade Javy Lopez season - someone in my other league traded him & Mark Redman away for Orlando Cabrera (which seems pretty dopey, in my estimation, but, then, I can't say sheeit) (& my other leauge is a Keeper, so this makes a wee bit more sense, getting a solid SS for a once-fungable C & a walking woundee SP).

The thing is, this (Javy's nuttiness) doesn't seem fluky so much as it is the result of him getting his dead ass into shape, & while there's going to be some sort of collapse in the 2nd half (since most, if not all, catchers get all whiny & tired in August) (pansies), I don't know if it'd be worth it to get rid of him.

My recommendation, Yanc3 (since you asked, obviously) - keep Javy, play Huff @ first, find yourself a good solid OF on the waiver wire, & do something with Deivi Cruz, because if anyone's playing out of his gourd, it's that guy.

Anyone else need advice? Since I'm in 7th place, I have a good view of EVERYONE'S team, and I have a big mouth, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! And why the hell are the BoSox supposedly looking to bring up Gabe Kapler? Is it because he looks sexier than Giambi? C'mon, Theo - keep the guy that can take a pitch!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

In Moneyball, the description of Hatteberg on the Red Sox dealing with all the shrinks and coachs who would call him "selfish" for drawing walks is pretty classic.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 26 June 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't started Moneyball. I will soon.

NOTE: Do NOT buy Positively Fifth Street. The Harpers article on which it's based is light years better. (i.e. I'm skipping all the bullshit and just reading the poker bits)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 June 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I tell you how much I loved Dan Duquette? What that man did to that team (outside of 2 trades) still gives me a warm fuzzy feeling in my belly, like I just ate undercooked chicken & some wlited lettuce. Fuzzy.

I hate those bastards. I'm so glad the Dodgers have sucked for ten years so I can aim all of my hate towards Duke basketball.

Also - can someone get Dusty of the jock of Six-Fingered Alfie, please? He's awful with a capital YOU SUCK, and having him pitch MORE in crucial game situations won't improve him - you'd think that would work, but then you'd be Dusty (i.e. WRONG).

Also also - who the hell is the White Sox toadie that horns in on all of Hawk's "YYYYYYYES!"es? Between that little handjive & those two nimrods going silent each time the opposing team gets a hit off their boys (oh the shame! oh I shan't speak on it anymore! and neither shall you!), I think someone should take one for the team & attempt a suicide bomb run @ the broadcast booth in US Mike Cuellar Field. & I'd also like to approach the High Council with this inquiry - oh, Grand Puba, shape of my heart, fruit of my loins, rump of my roast, should I be enjoying Joe Buck's Cardinals broadcasts as much as I do?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I propose a topic to fortify the momentum of this and all ILB threads:
Bosox - classic or dud?

Cos I read that until recently they were a good ol' boy institution who ran anyone not white out of Boston up till Mo came in (and now Pedro & Nomah). Does this obvious dudness overwhelm the classic romanticism of their futility?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Boston, I believe, was the last baseball team to integrate (take a bow, Pumpsie Green!), and I have no doubt that racism lingered over the BoSox "dynasty" for many years following that dubious day. (Of course, racism affecting personnel decisions takes a back seat in modern times to good ol' fashioned ERA-approved stupidity.) Not that everything in MLB is all hunky-dory regarding race relations and bigotry and things that spout racial slurs & epithets in the night.

No comment on how much the Yawkeys had to do w/ keeping the Red Sox in the cotton fields, intellectually speaking.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

depends on how you define recently - they were among the last to integrate (along with the Yankees) but they've had plenty of non-white boys thru the years (Jim Rice, Luis Tiant, Oil Can Boyd)

David, looks like Jiminez is the one to get the boot; Sox trade for Robbie Alomar!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooo - way to make that playoff run, trading for a switchhitter that can't hit from one side w/out pain, & who really can't hit from the other, either. Never mind that the real problem areas on the ChiSox roster involve a Mr. Konerko & a Mr. Valentin (& a Mr. Everyone Else on the White Sox Not Hitting For Poop). I sure hope the fannies appreciate this totally hollow move.

I dare say that GM Kenny Williams is dead-set on butchering the White Sox minor league system via dumbass trades. Kudos to Mr. Duquette for some nice fleecing (well, maybe not "nice", but given the situation, getting anything for Alomar is a bonus).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

A college buddy of mine who was a major sportsfan that grew up in Boston, he stated that they booed Jim Rice bad on "Jim Rice Day". According to him, at the time which was early 90s, he said the only black athletes in Boston that got peoples respect from total whitebreads were Celtics like Robert Parrish, ML Carr, Cornbread Maxwell, and Dennis Johnson.

I read an article online how the new ownership in Boston is trying to do more for innercity baseball and trying to mend some of the fences with the African American community.

I was watching the 86 series live when Calvin Schiraldi (ex-Cub) and Bob Stanley threw away the World Series, both of which deserve as much if not more blame than Buckner for losing that game. Buckner made the play that every one remembers, but those two bozos out of the bullpen REALLY blew the game, putting it up to where Buckner's error was the straw that broke the back.

I remember in the weeks going up to the playoffs and during the Redsox series against the Angels (and another classic former Cub goat Donnie Moore's nightmare RIP) that the announcers kept wondering when the Sox lack of a closer would come back to haunt them.

If the Redsox make the playoffs will their lack of a proven closer (Kim doesn't count) come back to haunt them?

earlnash, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

As bad as the last 1.5 years were, he's still one of the greatest players I've ever watched, a career .300 hitter at 2B and a first ballot hall of famer. I love the move! He'll be fine. In 2001 he had 100 RBI and 30 SB. He's gonna love being back in the AL playing with his big bro...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure at least on his first ballot, Alomar will lose alot of votes for spitting on that umpire.

I cannot understand the White Sox. Thomas starts to remember how to hit and now Konerko forgets.

earlnash, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

from my other league:

Eric,

Let me preface this first: I love you. And I miss you. Come back to me.

While browsing at season to date stats it may seem that Mondesi for Rivera is not an illogical trade. However, you must consider that Rivera spent the first 6 weeks of the season on the DL but more importantly:

After starting the year very hot, Mondesi's Batting Average for the month of June was .204 and he's on the verge of losing his starting status in Yankee Stadium if they bring in another outfielder... put succinctly, he's not exactly the type of guy you want to give up one of the best closers in baseball for (fyi: Rivera's having a better season than Gagne/Smoltz/Percival).

So, in short, please stay off crack. This has been a public service announcement courtesy of you league commissioner.

was that rude?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, everett is ice cold...

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"(fyi: Rivera's having a better season than Gagne/Smoltz/Percival)."

Say WHAT? Gygax, PLEASE back that ass (& that claim) up!

I dare say that GM Kenny Williams is dead-set on butchering the White Sox minor league system via dumbass trades. Kudos to Mr. Hart for some nice fleecing (well, maybe not "nice", given that I'm not sure the White Sox have any minor leaguers worth a damn, but being able to flip Everett for anything short of a restraining order & a sawed off is A-OK).

I'm not really sure why the White Sox are making a "run" at the AL Central crown (AKA The Real Wildcard), given that their pitching - outside of 1 month of Jon Garland & Esteban Loaiza's Wild Ride - has been buttass. If KW & the Powers That Be on the North Side (or whichever side they're on) are trying to placate the fannies w/ some irresistable Eau De Veteran, then kudos & pass the Cracker Jack, but stealing time away from the folks that are (I thought) the future of the franchise on the hopes that A) the Royals stop slapping around their Central brothers & B) the Twins pull their head from betwixt their buttocks is a dubious gamble at best. They didn't hire Steve Phillips as a consultant, did they?

PS - Nomah, WATCH THE BALL INTO THE GLOVE BROTHER!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

in 25 games in June, Carl Everett had:

90 ABs
19 Hits (.211)
8 Runs
4 HRs
9 RBIs
2 SBs
OPS (.662)

in the previous 2 months he had:

180 ABs
55 Hits (.305)
45 Runs
14 HRs
42 RBIs
2 SBs
OPS (1.017)

i hope they got a good deal on him.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry if I wasn't clear - Gygax!, I meant the Rivera claim, not the Everett claim. Shit, I saw that psycho crap his pants in Boston 2 years ago, tho it's nice to see Carl back on the snide. AGAIN. (Man, if they could just cut Glanville & Gonzo loose, they could start an OF of Mench, Nix, & What-The-Hell-Ever.) Given that he's supposedly in shape & actually interested in playing (or something other boon befitting that mercurial hard-nosed science-hating jackass), this might just be a li'l constipation prefacing some fiberific bowel-shaking violence (with the bat, that is) come late July.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

t/s: hot young position playaz vs. stud young armz

Willis and Horacio Ramirez both 7+ ip and 1 ER each my god...!

Young'uns like those two and maybe Jerome Williams now get me in heat a lot faster than Pujols, if only because good hitters are comparatively a dime a dozen. This side of post-season Giants action, (young) pitchers get me more excited about the game than anything else now.

I actually pick up good pitcher! I happy! Yes me! If it is possible to have a stat crush on a pitcher, I am totally dogging JW right now (esp. in my other league, where I missed snagging him a couple weeks back, & now I'll have to cough up Sammy Sosa & Matt Clement to fetch him, Troy Percival, & Jeremy Affeldt) (shyeah, right) (well, maybe not so "shyeah") (any of you pundits wanna give me your two cents, feel free).

I was actually OPSed off this morning, when my roomy woke me up a half-hour after my job / internship interview was supposed to begin (OPSed at myself, of course, not my roomy, tho it'd be nice if he were Mr. Belvedere to my Bob Uecker), but I'm much better now. Some Maalox cleared that shit up real good (urp).

Someone smack Quentin McCracken upside the head & clue him in re: The Shea-Hey Fag-Bashing Kid being "the right-sided presence this lineup needs", because, y'know, 'Zona had a similar model in Matt Williams earlier this year & they didn't need to dump a young stud pitcher type (who was GREAT yesterday walking the bases loaded @ Ruth's House, lemme tell ya) to enjoy his 0fers & spotty defense.

I have J-Dub in my other league too. He's the new Dontrelle Willis, doncha know!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo Yance! I need yr knowledge.

Should I trade:

Sammy Sosa / Matt Clement

FOR:

Jerome Williams / Jeremy Affeldt / Troy Percival

Sosa's 35, y'know. He's OOOOOLD.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you kidding, Poopshots? That's a horrible deal! You can still get quite a bit for Sosa. In my other league my friend's negotiating a deal right now that would net him Beltran and Vasquez for Sammy. Wait until Sammy gets hot before dealing him cuz: 1) Sosa's still a stud and 2) Clement is better than either of the three pitchers you'd be getting in return.

I'm getting offers left and right for Lidle. Someone on ESPN must've written a piece about Lidle as the quintessential "second-half performer." I wanna sell high.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

And as I say that I get an offer for Mike Sweeney for Lidle and a player to be named. I like the sound of this deal.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy fuck. This could be a coup. Dude thinks he's down for Morgan Ensberg and Cory Lidle for Mike Sweeney. I'd make that deal.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. Actually, I was just thinking of trying to make a play for Ensberg in my league - he's gone NUTS, & is probably going to at least perform at a level that'll make Geoff Blum a Grade A bench rodeo clown. If Ensberg's a benchie for you, getting Sweeney for those two is choice ... BUT ... (said in a Peter Gammons voice)

...with Sweeney's back being dicey, I dunno if getting him @ this point is such a coup. Guys w/ back issues always have back issues, & that's not good for guys that like to mash the ball. The words "serious setback" have been invoked re: Sweeney's comeback, too.

Griffey's out for the season with an injury shockah

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 July 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, since my season is done (it was probably done well before now, but it's definitely cooked now), here's what I'll do - to make the race a little bit more interesting I will make any trade with any team higher than me that is not Aaron, so long as the trade is not so lopsided it cries veto (ie. no A-Rod for Uribe)(this is basically what the Royals have done the last few years prior to this one anyway), unless everybody thinks this is a bad idea. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK - I really felt good about the second half too (Junior was on a tear going into the break).

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 July 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha - yer kidding!

(not saying haha to mock your pain, just, I mean, has there ever been a more luckless ballplayer than this guy? What was he doing anyway, shagging a routine fly ball?)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 18 July 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it was sorta a case of really instant karma - he hit a ball, thought it was a homer so of course he has to admire it, it weren't a homer so he really has to hustle to get a double, ruptures a tendon in his ankle in the process. out for the season. when I drafted him I figured 'surely he won't get struck by lightening this year too?' and then thought I'd seen the worst of it when he missed a month earlier in the season. christ, four years ago he's a threat to aaron, now he might not even see 500.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 July 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 19 July 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount, why are you cashing in your chips because of Griffey's gimptacular ways? There's plenty of stuff in the free agent market that can help alleviate the pain of your loss, & I dare say there are better options currently available on the wire than Ron-DL (ESPECIALLY given that you were about to swap White for a very very hott Mariano). Never mind that you're doing a whole lot better than I am - I'll be damned if I'm gonna have a quitter sitting 4 spots above me in the standings!

Also - for the past month, Griffey's been hitting .206 (albeit with a .958 OPS) (hey, he's like Adam Dunn!). The last few games pre-break notwithstanding, that's pretty awful (ESPECIALLY if he did well the week prior to the All Star Game).

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 19 July 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount, what you want is Matt Stairs, The Human Beer Keg. (Don't scoff!)

"The Yankess make a move, acquiring left-handed hitting outfielder David Dellucci for Raul Mondesi. Meanwhile, the Red Sox, IN AN ATTEMPT TO KEEP UP WITH THE JONESES, acquire Scott Williamson from the Reds."

Holy crap how far do you have to be up your employer's ass before they call in the jaws of life & force an oxygen tube into the butthole? Trying to compare a piddly little bench move (which allows the Yankees to give the majority of RF playing time to stiff-in-training Karim Garcia WOO YOU'RE THE MAN NOW DOG) to a move that allows your closest competitor to A) improve their bullpen and B) improve their starting rotation (by moving Kim into Ramiro Mendoza's rotation spot) shows an inordinate amount of unnecessary chutzpah, 26 world championships & the adulations of fans all across the world be damned to fuck.

Never mind that the Red Sox move was actually announced around 9 PM EST, & the Yankees broadcast makes it sound as if it happened after the Yanks made their oh-so important roster swapski.

Yo gygax! - I'd watch out re: Edgardo not being worth the 4 big ones. He's been hitting well as of late - I heard his slumpski had a wee bit to do w/ being away from his wife & kids for the first half of the season. They moved to Frisco in July, I guess. & he just stuck it to KWood grand salami style. OPS past month = .797, which isn't great, but it's MUCH better than it's been. & why are you bitching about the Giants' GM when they're in first place by 11.5 games?!?!?

Non-sequitor: wackiest trade offer I've received ever (what I'd get VS what I'd give up) -

Schilling / Jay Payton / Horacio Ramirez FOR Ainsworth / Mike Cameron / Piniero / Javier Vazquez

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

alfonzo answers my prayers!

i'm bitching about the giants GM because he is probably more highly regarded in this town than mothafuckin' billy beane if you can believe that. i am not impressed with him, the giants have been LUCKY, that's right LUCKY. schmidt and rueter on the DL last week and they kept rollin' along on their 2nd half opening home stand.

last weekend i traded millwood and marcus giles for vlad guerrero (coming off the dl). millwood is falling apart, but giles has come alive the day after i traded him and can't be stopped since. vlad has been off/on... two homers in one game followed by 0/4 for example. did i make a mistake? i'm #2 in that league (bonds, pujols, manny and now vlad).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think you did, gygax!. Who's your 2b now?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

And about Sabean whom I still think the world of: I figure that out of all the deals he's made since he became our GM, it's just that now all in one lump this season there have been bad deals, the single worst of the ones you listed IMO is the Moss-Ortiz trade. Obviously, Goat Bernard and Felix the Cat have been on the wrong side of the bustline (cleavage?), but JT has been surprisingly ok (yes overpriced, but what price defense?), Brower has been another good surprise (long relief/spot starts to balance out Livan's innings). And who would've thought a guy approaching his 40s would be the monster that he is? Andres Galarraga, take a bow.

If you look at his track record, Sabean's been as good as Midas. Out of all the trades he's made, there are only a handful of ex-SF prospects he's given that are even in the bigs, only one of whom has become an All-Star (Foulke). (Edwards Guzman being the other guy, prob. from the Schmidt trade.)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

*he's given = he's given up.

Also, I know that the shelflife for relievers is short, but who would've thought that Felix was going to implode the way he has?

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like an OK trade bordering on sweet, gygax!, depending on what you have on your pitching staff & esp. if it's a keeper league. If Vlad can get his hard-swingin' ass off the Astroturd, his back shouldn't be too big of a deal. He's going to be sporadic for a while, though, possibly for the rest of the season. It takes me at least 6 months to get back to slacking shape after I throw out my back when playing Warcraft - I can't even lie down like I usually do, and god forbid I should stretch & yawn too hard!

1. I don't think a cap's in the near future, esp. after having finally "settled" on a lux. tax.

2. I've always had some level of A's hate since '89, but like with the Angels, I'm not going to gloat till they're officially eliminated this year.

Yancey, the words "solid 3rd basemen" and "Eric Chavez" do not belong in the same sentence until he learns to hit lefties and gets some of that there plate discipline. Also, please do not substitute "Eric Chavez" with "Mark Teixera" in that equation, as he is slated to be Pop-Up Palmeiro's 1B understudy, or a potential LF, which is foine, but not 3B. I would keep what you got.

Was Dontrelle talking to Ralph and Mr. T?

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Solid 3B = Schmidt, Ott, Matthews, and, y'know, that Boone guy you have. He won't give you any better AVG love than Chavez will, HRs are actually closer than they should be (because of Chavez not being all he can be), and Boone steals more. And, oh yeah, HE'S ON THE YANKEES NOW (which actually doesn't mean too much, given he'll be hitting #7 or lower) (this isn't the '98 team, after all) (I just wanted to type that in caps).

Regardless, as down as I was on Boonie earlier this year, trading him for Chavez straight up would be a push as is, but then swapping Giles and Soriano for Teixeira on top of that is lopsided the wrong way.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, looking at their numbers side by side, the BA for both is comparable, Chavez gives me 5 more homers a year and maybe 20 more RBI. Boone gives 20 more SBs. Pretty even. That said, I'm not keen on the idea of keeping Boone... But maybe I will.

I do want to move some players though. Guys I could get something for that I will not keep next season: Lo Duca, Ibanez, Ensberg, Giles, Byrd, Payton, Beckett, Worrell, Jerome Williams, Washburn. I'm actually considering keeping J. Williams and/or Jose Vidro. We get to keep five guys -- for me, Berkman, Abreu, Zito and Gagne are definites. That fifth slot is wide open. So I'd like to either deal some combo of those players above for a top infielder (tho Vidro and Boone certainly are borderline) or a top pitcher, or I could keep one of those other dudes. I know it's early to think about this, but I want to try to pull something off. I've been offering the world for Dontrelle Willis, but the owner who has him won't return my emails. I want D-Train cuz I could throw him in my minor league slot, which means he wouldn't count against my keepers for next season (right now Claussen, Harden and Soriano are my three minor leaguers).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, before this season (when I still refused to take boone bros seriously and still thought chavez would be giambi but better cuz he's a 3b!) I woulda said make that trade, but now I think no.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man you gotta keep Jerome Williams. Let Vidro slide. There are plenty of 2B out there nowadays - 3B is the position where it's tough to get something good. That and catcher (as always). I dunno if you'd really be able to get much for Worrell (unless it was to a team needings saves for the stretch run), or is Nen not coming back for a while?

Unless you can swing a deal for Rolen or (ideally) Blalock, I dunno if you should really try to snag a 3B. There's probably a good chance someone like Sean Burroughs or Ensberg (or Boone!) would be available in the draft in later rounds.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nen is aiming for spring training, so yes, there's still a question if he'll be around next year/how much/how hard.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm considering Jerome Williams. Depends on how he pitches the rest of the year. I just offered Giles, Lidle and Ensberg for Willis and a couple of half-assed dudes to make the trade appear at least somewhat fair to the rest of the league. It's an absolutely absurd offer, but I'd be thrilled if he accepted.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 1 August 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, more $$$ league advice needed. It's looking like I might be dealing Gagne for Teixera, straight-up. The deal's hopelessly lopsided in the Teixera owner's favor, I admit, but by nabbing MT, I get to put him in my minor league slot, where he doesn't count against my five keepers for next season. So by trading for him, I would effectively be swapping Gagne for Teixera and another one of my players, who I would then get to keep next year. Which could include Jerome Williams or Aaron Boone or Marlon Byrd or Jose Vidro or Brian Giles or someone I might trade for. Is this a terrible move? Am I foolishly putting my money on a guy who has hit .260 this year, but's 'sposed to be the stud of all studs? Perhaps. This is what I'm unsure of. But, as good as Gagne is, I'm not THAT upset about losing him, simply cuz the closer business is a nebulous one, and careers seem to rise and fall rapidly. So I'm leaning toward doing this deal. I'm also working on getting Jose Reyes and Dontrelle Willis, but I'm not sure if those will work out. So Raposa, Blount, Lee, Lawrence, Felicity, Diamond -- lay it on me please!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Closers ain't nothing but starters that can't take it. I say go for it.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Without understanding how the keeper league works, can't you get someone else on top of MT for Gagme?

Leee (Leee), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well the deal is Gagne and Claussen (Reds pitcher) for Teixera and Pat Burrell. But in reality it's Gagne for Teixera straight up. Yeah, I could probably get better for Gagne, but this gives me a distinct advantage for next season. Most teams will be entering the league with five keepers plus three mediocre minor leaguers. I'll be entering with Abreu, Berkman, Zito and two players to be named, plus Harden, Teixera and R. Soriano in my minor league spots. It's just trying to maximize the amount of quality players I start with pre-draft next year.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I say go for it

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 1 August 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 2 August 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Saturday, 2 August 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like a good trade to me, given the parameters of the league. I mean, honestly, how much longer can Gagne keep this up? Closers are so flash-in-the-pan. Last time I checked, Bobby Thigpen wasn't in the Hall of Fame.

Plus the whole thing where I'd open up a spot for a player who can give me stats every day (Boone, Vidro). Plus, you gotta hang on to this Jerome Willams kid. 9 Ks through 6 tonight!!

A: That would be the Detroit Tigers!

Favorite sports quote of the day:

"Looks like Jose Hernandez of the Pirates is going to make a serious run at the all-time strikeout record. This guy is striking out more often than Jeremy Shockey at a Mensa singles mixer."

Leee (Leee), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Since we're going on about graphs and such, what do you kinfolk think about Billy Beane's* (and presumably other Jamesians/sabremetricians) assertion that clutch hitting DNE**? Conventional wisdom judges clutch hitting based on BA w/ RISP, so I'm guessing that there will be variation b/w overall BA and BA w/ RISP. Or is Beane's statement that the total league BA and BA w/ RISP are virtually identical?

*from Moneyball
**does not exist.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

BB cares more about BBs w/ RISP.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

serious answer:

slugging % w/ RISP (esp, "close and late"?) is the better indicator of "clutch hitting".

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Bill James thinks clutch hitting doesn't exist, just that its existence is overstated - he had something about Drysdale vs. Gibson that was basically very 'obv. some people are and some people aren't clutch performers'

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That's stating the obvious of course, like saying that some people are good hitter and others aren't.

BB flatout sez that clutch hitting is an illusion in the book though.

This subject has been on my mind b/c of recent woes from a certain team.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 18 August 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

woes:
San Francisco finished 0-7 against Montreal overall, the first time in the franchise's 121-year history it was swept in a season series involving more than three games according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

the list:
barry bonds - inactive (bereavement)
marquis grissom - day to day (bruised right hand from HBP)
rich aurilia - 15 day DL (emergency appendectomy)
kirk rueter - 15 day DL (strained right shoulder)
jason schmidt - day to day (tendinitis in right (pitching) arm)
jt snow - day to day (pulled groin (right))

Pulling for a friend

They came up together as rookies with the San Francisco Giants, shared an apartment in the city, but Shawn Estes and Bill Mueller were like the odd couple.

Estes was a pitcher, a lefty, wore his emotions on his sleeve on the mound. Mueller, a third baseman, never changed his expression or showed his emotions on the field.

Now, they are both married, recently bought homes near each other in Arizona and maintain a close friendship by talking once or twice a week on the phone.

Estes is with the Cubs now. Mueller is with the Boston Red Sox and is enjoying a career year at the top of the potent Red Sox lineup after struggling through a knee injury the past two seasons. He is fifth in the majors with a .330 batting average.

"I am very humbled, but I was just trying to do my job getting good at-bats and driving in some runs," Mueller said. "I don't worry about individual numbers. We're in a big race, and I try to focus on winning baseball games. I'm not a big stats guy or records guy. My foundation is to go out and help my club get the victory."

"I don't think Boston got him to hit home runs. They realized what he could (do) with his glove and his bat, just fundamentally. They had enough bangers they didn't need him to hit home runs. Now that he's hitting them, it's just a bonus," Estes told the Oakland Tribune.

"I'm rooting for the Red Sox all the way," Estes said. "Mainly, because Billy is there and also because I feel sorry for the Red Sox. I want to see them win. I want to see them knock the Yankees off their pedestal. They've been on top the last eight or whatever years. I'm rooting for them."

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I was listening to a sports talk station on the way to the supermarket yesterday and they were talking about how they hope the Tigers break the record for most losses in a season. Because it would be the Baseball Gods saying to Mike Illitch, Dave Dombrowski, Alan Trammell and Kirk Gibson "shame on you for trying pass off this team as competitive at the beginning of the season." I think I'm inclined to agree... and the scary thing is that 120 losses isn't out of reach at all.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Tigers are terrible, but taking into consideration the 2003 Mets' payroll, I think this year's Mets might arguably be one of the worst teams ever. There's NO HOPE for them, unless they totally gut that team. It's just ridiculous how depressing they are to watch.

I haven't been around very much, gygax, but I'm still here.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the Mets are looking up a bit, at least compared to what they were in April. The BP notion that the current crop of rookies on the Mets (Jeff Duncan / Jason Phillips / Jae Seo) is similar to the trio of Yankee rookies / placeholders from the early 90s (Oscar Azocar / Kevin Maas / Clay Parker) is probably spot-on - they're just a transition team. Despite that, if the Mets could actually field a semi-decent & healthy outfield - that is, get 140ish games from Cliff Floyd, & mulch Timo Perez & Roger Cedeno - they'd probably have at least 10 more wins.

And how the hell did anyone associated with the Tigers think they had a shot? I can understand the usual "that's why you play the game" pre-season rhetoric, but any hopes outside of that is some kind of crazy.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Go Tigers!

Looks like Baez is out of a closers job and is now the setup man for Riske in Cleveland. Some holds might be forthcoming for the person I traded Baez to... (Leee?)

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it was crazy, but in spring training they were doing the whole, "we're turning this thing around this season and we have lots of talent." The same sports talk guy said something like, "remember when I was down there in spring training and I said this was the worst team I have ever seen in all my years of covering baseball?"

And the Tigers early on this season had some sort of promotion to "come out and see the young pitching talent of Jeremy Bonderman!!" Pretty sad.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought Higginson was supposed to be the big up and coming talent for the Tigers. What the hell happened?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh... well, he's up and come, or something. He's 33!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fear not, Tiger fans! Look @ this! Draw parallels at your leisure. And also note that the Braves finished first the very next year WITHOUT Maddux!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. ESPN was reading my posts... 2003 Tigers beat 1962 Mets in 6 games!

Here's Baseball Prospectus' take.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

All I know is - after the Angels' out-of-ass performance last year, and the Royals holding onto first place after missing Beltran & Sweeney for a couple months (collectively) and relying on Lima Time and Darrell May to get them through some tough spots, anything is possible! Sweet crap, look @ that pitching staff!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh... and the thing is that the Braves had Teddy Turner's deep pockets and a great farm system to get them where they where. The Tigers have a cheapskate owner (it baffles everyone how he can spend so much money on the Red Wings and let the Tigers DIE for the past 10 years or so) and the best prospects of the farm system are ON THE TEAM right now. It really is amazing.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a sec. That last post makes it sound like I actually care.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't the Orioles lose like 50 games outta the gate like 15 years ago?

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Pocketman, Danys "Joan" Baez is indeed mine. I'm down to one "bona fide" closer (Worrell, whom we all know was *supposed* to be a setup man). I have a glut of middle relief now! I need another closer!

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My stupidest ILB moves:

1) trading Sabitha for Eldred. (blinded by homerism and that I had "too much" starting pitching.) (And then droppng Eldred and now he has like 3 wins this month!)

2) dropping Damaso Marte early in the season when he was sucking.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My boners:

1. Fielding (and at one point pulling the trigger on) any number of Pujols deals.

2. Dropping Mueller when he was platooning early in the season.

3. Dropping Quantrill and Dave Weathers.

4. Trading Edmonds for Mesa.

Fortunately I've found enough gems to balance things out.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Smoltz - Hurt or Healthy?

Only 4 appearances in the last 3 weeks (the 2nd to last was giving up a huge HR to Pujols for a Blown Save/Loss).

Two close games vs. SFO the last two nights, no sign of Smoltz... not even any bullpen action when Grybolski loaded them up with 1 out.

No Smoltz = Braves troubles?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 21 August 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The majors should totally adapt the little league introduction format where the players' favorite songs, movies, tv shows and foods are announced. I NEED to know what Jose Lima likes to eat!!!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Japan in unfuckingstoppable. They're about to blow out Mexico.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I was watching it one day and the 2nd baseman said his favorite player was Bret Boone and I thought 'smart pick' and the right fielder picked Ichiro and I thought 'that kid's pretty cool' and then the catcher picked Ben Davis and I thought 'wtf? - BEN DAVIS?!!!'. anyhow, the team was from Washington. can you imagine what it would be like to be 12 years old and your favorite player is Ben Davis?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

who did Japan blow the fuck out of the other day? the slaughter rule was invoked

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i forget who they massacred. but mexico's pitcher struck out the side to get out of a serious jam (bases loaded, no outs) relatively unscathed. one wild pitch got japan two runs, however.

my pick would be wiki gonzalez, no doubt.

In case gygax! ain't yet hep, Smoltz on the DL for tendinitis.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

nice, thanks Leee. I saw him called into the bullpen during the last of the SF0-ATL series (ref: Worrell meltdown #235325) and he looked weak, something was off.

yet smoltzy pitched back to back games this past weekend (including his last outing in COL where he struck out the save for #44)... but only 4 appearances in the past 3 1/2 weeks speaks volumes.

but they can afford this what with their luxurious 14 game lead (cf: NL/AL Central divisions).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee you city slicker!!! I just traded my only healthy closer to you!! I had no idea Smoltz was going on the DL.
