Yet Another 'What Are You Listening To Today' Thread

Once again, a thread gets too long.

In my case, the Dears, Not the Dahlias. Boy, they sure liked Blur in the early days.

Ned, some threads just don't really merit a continuation...

Today's Song of the Day can be found on this page (it's the one with Mr. Sylvian on it). Oh dear sweet Jesus in Heaven above, I've found my OTHER "favorite song of all time". It'll go really well with Duran Duran's "So Long Suicide", which had occupied that slot solo since 1997.

*happy sighs* I'll add more to this list once I've listened to this song enough and can listen to other songs. :)

To those of you who disliked it, I'm terribly sorry and I'll try to make it up to you sometime soon. To those of you who liked it, OMG, THANK YOU SO MUCH. *smooch*

So as for now, it remains the same. I will make an effort to listen to something else on Monday. Pinky swear.

Today's album of the day is Depeche Mode's Exciter! This is what I listened to on my way to and from church this morning/afternoon. Some of the best of the band can be found on this album, IMHO. Then again, I'm all about the latter-period releases of especially loved musical artists.

Having said that, though, I do still feel like listening to my Song of the Weekend. It's got ahold of me like almost nothing's gotten ahold of me before.

This morning I woke up to Blur's Parklife and was energized by its, um, energy! Then early in the afternoon I felt like running to the comfortable tried and trues and so I listened to Duran Duran's Pop Trash, which I know I like quite a bit. Toward the end of the afternoon I was fully stressed out and wanted to relax, so I listened to David Sylvian's Secrets of the Beehive and I was hit with this wonderful sense of euphoria for a few hours afterward.

And not a single listen of the Song of the Weekend. Though I want to. Nope, not going to touch it. Not until tomorrow. ;)

Talking Heads' More Songs About Buildings and Food, just put it in just now. Shit yeah. "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" is one of those songs that, no matter how drowsy you were when it started, by the time it's over your blood's all hot again.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 29 August 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting nostalgic/old - just listened to comforting old music last night while drafting up this weekend's CoM entry, i.e.:

Boz Scaggs, Silk Degrees (Van Morrison goes disco, or should have done - mmm, "What Can I Say," "What Do You Want The Girl To Do," "Lowdown," "Lido Shuffle" with its fantastic triple Moog riff towards the end; Philip Glass meets Van McCoy)
Basement Jaxx, Remedy (in readiness for the new 'un)
Buzzcocks, Singles Going Steady (especially side one: almost made me fall in love with guitars again)
Heaven 17, Penthouse And Pavement (the Pavement Side)
Art Of Noise, Who's Afraid Of...("Moments In Love" made me feel very tearful)
and prompted by yesterday's post, refamiliarised myself with The Fall's The Unutterable - yes it does kind of tail off towards the end, but otherwise it remains frighteningly brilliant.

In the meantime my copy of On The Beach sits in the corner, staring at me and daring me to play it...

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 29 August 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I am listening to "Just An Illusion" by Imagination, which still sounds rather good. It's on a mercenary compi called Choose 80s Dance, which I picked up for cheap yesterday. There are many marvellous records on it, a stretch on Disc 1 that is sterling silver (Womack and Womack - Cameo - Communards - Shannon - Dead Or Alive) and a stretch on Disc 2 that is a bit of a stretch (Terence Trent - Fat Boys/Beach Boys - Debarge - Commodores).

Tom (Groke), Friday, 29 August 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

downloaded peter brotzmann/han bennink/fred van hove FMP 130 from the early 70s,which has just been reissued. Lots of what you'd expect from the cast and a record on the FMP label but also lots of unexpected things: some tunes from the piano and a sense of humour (from what I've read abt FMP those things don't figure in at all).

wonderful to see atavistic doing these reissues.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Blondie? In Utero? Kraftwerk? Is this the sort of thing ILE's fallen to? No wonder it's going to hell in an Easter basket. And people wonder why it's so hostile/unfun/terrible!

(Sorry, this was the only thread no one'd done that in yet, and I was feeling left out. I like the above three bands/albums :))

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 6 September 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the pieces are varied. on the first disc there are five and the first one and last were best, some of it has electronic processing too but that can goes on a bit too long for my liking. Maybe I'll come round on a second listen.

The third piece is actually based on circualr breathing, which of course links in to what evan parker does.

''Do you know Sainkho Namtchylak at all?''

Read abt her and am interested but, as with so many things, just haven't picked anything up.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghopal Krishan is great! I've never heard that double CD, but I have his later Dhrupad et Khyal disc on Ocora ... fantastic stuff. Julio, I'll include a Sainkho disc in the package I'm sending... You'll love it!

Today I listened to Geeta on the radio! She played some scary music.

Also Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night, which I just picked up last night. Hadn't heard it since it came out, and it is actually quite good. I had completely forgotten "Seven Wonders" and "Everywhere" - and indeed the fact that they were even singles - but they immediately came back to me as soon as they played. Yeah, this was definitely a more successful album than I had recalled, and not a bad way to go out at all. Shitty drum sound though.

Also listened to that there new Basement Jaxx, thanks to stevem. Yeah, it's great.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 6 September 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

If you ever think about getting something installed at Circuit City, shoot yourself in the foot.

Good that I don't have even the slightest idea where that would be. Not to mentioned not having a car stereo.
Nor any kind of firearm.

God, do I suddenly feel safe and secure. Mere minutes before going to bed.

Stars are falling down
Onto this broken-hearted hungry clown
Because he can't get his fill.

Never thought that he would ever
Want this much from a man,
But love is the steepest sharpest slide.

Oh here he'd lie at your side
Looking up into the sky
Wondering if this is allowed

But fear rules him easily
It takes lust and strength
To turn to you and say

"I want you and I need you"
But I haven't got the fattest chance in hell.

Sun has finally upped and gone
Being bored of everyone.
I slip of my shirt and shoes.

Time to hate myself again
My small voice and freckled skin
Till the safety of the dark.

Oh here I'd lie between your thighs
Looking up into your eyes
Wondering if this is allowed

But fear rules me easily
It takes lust and strength
To turn to you and say

"I want you and I need you"
But I haven't got the fattest chance in hell.

So why does the world laugh
And take us on these rides
My dear.

I'll shut my epileptic eyes and
Daydream of busy nights
My dear.

Because I want you and I'll have you,
I'll crush my arms around
Until I melt inside of you.

Oh god I want you and I need you,
I'll be your son your slave and keeper.

There were four men in this room
Why did you have to go and pick on me?

I realize that, if I'm trying to get out of this "wo is me, 'tis fall and the wind smells of love and I'm lonely" vibe, I need to stop listening to this sentimentalist hoohah like MMJ and Tom Waits and Bjork, so now I'm drinking coffee and forcing myself into "fuck it!" mode with a little help from Enter the 36 Chambers.

Right now, Kid Loca - "Alone Again So" because it came up on my iTunes. "Dust In the Wind" before this, Presence before that. Also today I listened to Jeff Beck's Truth (undecided), some of Murray Street (their records are never useless, you know. There's always some worthwhile guitar thing in there.), the first six songs from OK Computer, and some of Here Come the Warm Jets. It was kind of a low-key classic rock-y day. Hey, "Steal My Sunshine" just came on.

bark-celibacy. their 'swing' alb is a classic of free improvisation but this is a slightly different line up and it isn't that good. The grooves sound too forced and they seem to run out of ideas. i couldn't finish.

No problems with cyro- derek bailey's duo with brazilian percussionist cyro baptista where bailey is improvising, working his way round some samba and capoeira type rhythms.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 25 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

So far today I've played Bruford - Feels Good To Me

It's pretty shitty, to be honest. But it makes me laugh SO heartily; not some ironic sneery laugh either. The title track has this keyboard riff that sounds like it's STRAIGHT out of Leisure Suit Larry 3 (obv. it would be the other way, but...)
I dunno, it's supposed to be all epic, like "wooh, Rocky ascended the steps! Wooptidoodledoo!" but with this SUPERdinky keyboard patch too! I don't play the album often enough to remember it, so I burst out laughing when the buildup to it starts and I remember what's ahead.
Still won't stop me from selling the album if I ever get the chance, but hah!

Also, Anette Peacock is a horrible, horrible singer. At least on this album. Come and getttit

To think Dave Stewart is responsible for some of this crap (particularly the keyboard sounds, I would assume)
How people go from the lovely tones most of those Canterbury bands used, to the ridiculous garbage on this album is beyond me. Must've really scrweed up his ears at gigs.

Oh, I also played an MP3 from the new Akercocke album. Sounds like the band's taking a step away from the death metal of the first two albums; but are still trudging through the lichen-infested swamp of their lack of talent.

I found a weird old mix cd I made with no track listing, it just said "It's a cold rain, motherfucker" on the cd. It's just random stuff I got off of Kazaa, so it's strange. It has "Smells like Booty," something by Derek Bailey, Acid Mothers Temple, Adult., Boredoms, and some random noise, but then I got excited because it has "Losing My Edge" on it and I didn't think I had a recording of that anymore. Later I'll probably listen to the Glenn Branca cd my friend lent me and maybe the Rapture cd if I get around to buying it.

I'm actually trying really hard NOT to listen to the new Cee-Lo CD (Cee-Lo Green Is The Soul Machine) I went and picked up on my lunch break cuz I want to wait until tonight after band practice when I can properly crank it through the home stereo and smoke a li'l s'um s'um and actually listen to it. If I put it on here, I'll ruin that first-listen impact by wasting it on my office speakers and not-high ears.

Sooooo I'm listening to Cibo Matto Stereo Type A and realizing: A) how much I like this album, B) how good Sean & Timo & Yuka & Miho's voices sound together, and C) how funktacular the groove in "Spoon" is.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Today's a dust-off-stuff day for some metal albums, it seems.

Cynic - Focus
Still absolutely lovely. I used to consider it one of my favorite albums, but while it's not quite at that level for me any longer, it's still definite upper-echelon stuff.

Emperor - IX Equilibrium
Not exactly their most popular release, but I like it alright. Some great stuff sprinkled around on it.

Iron Maiden - Powerslave
I've always had trouble with Dickinson-era Iron Maiden... There's some great songs on the albums, but then there's absolute rubbish like "2 Minutes To Midnight" etc. I suspect I'll end up selling this too... Wouldn't surprise me if I end up owning one Dickinson-era album plus "Iron Maiden" and "Killers"

Lined up for this evening:
Sodom - Agent Orange (a thrash-favorite of sorts, but for some reason it's not been played in a long time)
Disharmonic Orchestra - Expositionprophylaxe (by FAR their best. The second album was fun too, but the third, "Pleasuredome", is pretty damn boring)

I suspect my hair will have turned all mullety by the time this evening's over.

Clearly the ultimate Dee album is My Big Fat Greek Wedding Thing Album

Hah! Because you thought I'd be into traditional-ish Greek music? Or because the movie itself is a gushy, light, romantic-type movie and you thought I'd most probably adore it? It's really a case of both, plus the fact that since Greeks are so similar to Mexicans, I almost feel like I'm connecting with my roots.

Clearly Dee, we must get together for our "synths and eyeliner" party.....

Hon, you name the time and place and I'll be there! Synths + pretty boys wearing eyeliner (or at least looking as though they do!) + the '80s = Ok, I can SO die happily now. New Romanticism fits my bill and has done so since... gosh, since I was 12 or 13!

This is evident by what I've been listening to today:

Human League, Dare
ABC, Lexicon of Love
Japan, Tin Drum

Er... and Kylie Minogue's "I Should Be So Lucky"? *shrug* Oh well, at least it's still Classic '80s. :)

I love that Space Needle album. I don't really have much else to say about it except that it's great and I'm glad someone else listens to it. Do you have the second album (The Moray Eels Eat the Space Needle)? It's not quite as good but has some nice songs on it.

I like 'em both, but yeah, Voyager has better songs and hangs together better. Moray Eels has that grebt Roger Dean cover though!

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 6 October 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like the two cheezy pop songs on Moray Eels the best (Never Lonely Alone and Love Left Us Strangers). They are good mix tape fodder. Whatever happened to these guys? Wasn't it the same band as Varnaline, but with the singer and drummer switched around? Does Varnaline still exist? I have one Varnaline album which is pretty good but sounds nothing like Space Needle, more straight rock (like Neil Young & Crazy Horse).

Coke would have been an improvement. Seriously, each member seemed like they were playing in a different band. Zero cohesion at all. The bass player was especially blowing notes left and right, but still had to engage in the most gratuitous show of rock gestures I've seen since that bass player in Belly.

Being just contaminates the void
Being just contaminates the void

I remember, some years back, a punky reggae party
And a girl who measured your neck
Oh I dream of antwoman
With her Audrey Hepburn feelers
And her black and white stripes
I know my type and she's out there
I know my type and she's out there
With the cactus and the succulent
Oh she rises and she hops and then she eats you
Then she eats you
I ain't gonna argue with a dame like that

See the birds
Scattered on your dressing gown
See the dark seeds
See the dark barristers gliding away
Gotta do lunch before you get down
To some real judging
Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord
Alright for you and you only

Being just contaminates the void
Being just contaminates the void
I remember a punky reggae party
And a girl who measured your neck
Oh I dream of antwoman
With her Audrey Hepburn feelers
And her black and white stripes
In a southerly breeze
In a southerly breeze
In a southerly breeze

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

here comes the dancehall mix tracklisting with helpful riddim guide, Tim. (ilx isnt letting me post it in one piece so i might have to break it up, fuck). "problems": it was for a sean paul-crazy friend, so there's a really generous helping of dutty. and it's not strictly an '03 mix, a fair number of 2002 releases appear. but hey, i'm making this for me too and i wanted all these songs in one place, so i'll do it in a pazz n jop/'had an impact on me in 2003' stylee. editing it down to even 80 mins was hard, i want to expand this to 2cd size and spread some things around a little more evenly. anyway, if you want a copy of this as is you can mail me, but i prob wont be able to get anything to you for at least a month. also: sizzla is dancehall's woman-respecting mystikal.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been a bit out of love w/ music recently, but today I played 'Izipho Zam' by Pharoah Sanders, for the first time in ages, and listening to the second track 'Balance' - which starts as almost a kind of satire of corny funky bop jazz but then quickly slides into the most tremendous wailing freakout w/ Sonny Sharrock riffing over the top - I remembered why I loved this out-noize shit in the first place, so hurrah I suppose

You can pick up this CD from Selectadisc for £2.99 btw, every home shdl have one.

Mauricio kagel: Ludwig van. both of these I got bcz off soulseek and this was bootlegged off a deustche gramophon LP. basically a collage of beethovian riffs!!! Really funny at times how one riff goes into another with no connection in between and yet it disorientates but easily holds my attention. this is the idea but despite that i never felt that kagel was having a laugh at the listener's expense. I just love it (rzewski is on piano too).

Ornette coleman: chappaqua suite. bought this 2nd hand today and the first disc is just incredible. will now listen to the 2nd disc.

Just played Michiriro sato/john zorn's ganryu island on tzadik, an absolutely triffic improv sesh with Zorn at its squealin' hard blowin' best, really working furiously to provide counterpoint to sato's pluckings on his shiamsen. was first released in '84 and all zorn fans must give this on a listen.

Satchel are no longer together but Brad just released their third album and it its gorgeous!! Great track 8 by Stone Gossard and the first single "Shinin'" is just brilliant. See their official website for all bands relating to brad at http://www.bradcorporation.com
Dave Matthews first solo album "Some Devil" is well worth picking up if you're only familiar with the album "Everyday" which is the least favourite of fans. "Crash" "Before These Crowded Streets" and "Under The Table and Dreaming" shouild be essentials in everyones collection. Unfortunately DMB hasn't been across the waters in some time but if you get the chance to see the band live GO FOR IT. They are the best live act bar none. I saw them for the tenth time in Central Park, NYC last month and it was mind-blowing.
David Mead sadly is still not all that well known in North America but his son writing ability cannot be argued.
Just saw Jane's Addiction last month in Toronto and boy do they still rock. They did Three days from Ritual. WOW! Shame they only played for 90 minutes. I'm used to seeing Dave Matthews Band who will play for 3 hours.
Happy Mondays Pills Thrills N' Bellyaches is in my car at the moment. I love driving around Toronto with "I smell dope, I smell dope, I smell dope, I'm smelling dope" blaring out of my car.

''Live at the ICA/Retrospective - Ray Russell''

grr! ;)

More No wave courtesy of slsk: Made a CDR of teenage jesus and the jerks' 'everything', which is a cracking punk record (just 20 mins too) and filled the rest of it with Lydia lunch first alb 'queen of siam': a sort of Horror cabaret type thing (v good but it takes readjusting after teenage's abarasiveness).

The 'Y pants' by the Y pants: another No wave band: absolutely brilliant keyboards, toy sounds amongst the spiky songwriting. I am sad that this is not widely available.

Then Finally some stockhausen: Mikrophonie I, II and telemusik.

james chance and the contortions- buy and off white on one CDR. Buy is pretty good but off white descends into funk jams halfway through with no vocals by chance. really running out of steam I'm afraid.

Having heard the main four no wave bands post no new york discs, the contortions are the ones that really benefit from eno's production. They sound fuller if you like. 'buy' is pretty good tho'.

The Y pants and Ut are just as good as that lot and if they could've then should have been given some space on no new york.

more slsk goodies with Sunny murray sonny's time out- a terrific sesh with albert ayler and amiri baraka doing some poetry on one track, which really does alter the improvising. It takes off.

I am most envious, Julio, I still have yet to see any of his solo shows despite owning every damn thing he's released. At least I caught Swans last LA appearance.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It was really great Ned: he played a couple of Swans tunes at the end which made that gig extra special (never seen them live as I only heard abt and then checked out in 2000/1). Very intense during the songs but in between songs chatting to the audience and making jokes. Definetely go when you get the chance.
