Continued from #3: Video Game Life-Wasting Thread 3: Snake Eater

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

SO! Has anybody been playing Jade Empire? How is it? It is effectively the KotOR engine only applied to Kung Fu?

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

If it is, I'm considering buying an xbox solely to play it. And halo (finally), of course.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm waiting for it to hit PCs.

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Does anybody know of any games where you get to shoot people? Preferably with guns?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Mr Driller: Drill Spirits

http://i.walmart.com/i/p/00/72/26/74/70/0072267470000_215X215.jpg

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Tho the question remains, what kind of people do you want to shoot? aliens? stormtroopers? nazis? terr'ists? counter-terr'ists? Gov't troops in a dystopian future where aliens have taken over the world and humanity is struggling in a few cities, overseen by Robert Culp?

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Destroy All Humans!

Use destructive weapons and innate mental powers to take on the most feared enemy in the galaxy - Mankind! Play as Crypto, an alien warrior sent to Earth to clear the way for the Furon invasion force.Your mission is to infiltrate humanity, control them, harvest their brain stems and ultimately destroy them. You choose the method - infiltration or disintegration! Arm yourself with a variety of alien weaponry on land or in the air. Use the Ion Detonator, the Zap-O-Matic, the Sonic Boom, or even the Quantum Deconstructor to eradicate feeble humans. Explore and interact with 5 huge environments using an arsenal of alien abilities to manipulate humans into submission: hypnotize, body-snatch, read minds, levitate and more. Take to the skies in your UFO, abduct animals, cars, and humans for research, or cause large-scale destruction. [THQ]

Has anyone played this game? Because it sounds AMAZING.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Also I'm thinking about getting Fire Emblem for my upcoming overseas flights.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

oh god. the IGN hype shit for the next SSX game is horrid:

...Forget about the big-beat techno music that used to permeate SSX, that is so 90s. This year it's all about rock n' roll or as EA put it - "becoming a black diamond rockstar."

EA has yet to nail down the licensed tracks is it will be using but expect an assortment featuring the new stars of rock and roll along with some hip hop tracks...

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

also, according to IGN, Destroy All Humans doesn't hit til next tuesday...

I just threw up in my mouth.

So. Should I get an xbox/ps2 or should I wait for the next-gens?

giboyeux (skowly), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

get 'em used.

then wait for the new consoles to be out at least a year, so enough quality titles are there, and so that even the new consoles are available at used prices.

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Jade Empire is real good, though it doesnt deserve the 9.9 that IGN gave it. The graphics are much better than KOTOR, and some of the annoying quirks of the engine have been worked out. The game is pretty short, though, and I'm not sure that I prefer the realtime combat to the old turnbased style of KOTOR.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Saturday, 18 June 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

I was at a party this weekend with a bunch of dudes from Rav3n Software, who are currently working on Qu@ke 4 and the X-Men game. We mostly talked about comic books, but it was interesting to hear some complaints about writing stuff for the Quake engine and for the new Xbox platform.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 19 June 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Chris pretty much OTM; the conversations and character interactions are great but you don't really need to get fancy with the combat to get pretty far into the game. This is my "break from WoW" game (which, btw, is way more interesting on a PvP server).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 19 June 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

hey jordan, i think i know somebody else who was at that party.

We were too busy competing for the "Master of Obscure Batman Trivia" title to remember to argue about Star Wars.

kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

A fun little $12 game developed by some turkish guy and his wife, where you ride around on a horse with your group of horsemen you train up into knights, and kill other horsemen with lance, bow, sword, big fuck-off axe, whatever. Amazingly fun and addicting...and indie!

would just like to say

KATAMARI DAMACY!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 19 June 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

We broke out KD again last night. I can't wait for the sequel. And the soundtrack CD of the sequel. Katamari Damacy brings up another point I've been thinking about, since all my posts to these threads read like insipid game-design-blogger crap anyway because I spend more time thinking and reading about video games than I ever get to spend actually playing them: Why is the sound design for that game so AMAZINGLY GOOD? And why is sound design so often horribly overlooked?

In other news, I stalled out on the pirate ship stage of Fire Emblem and haven't picked up the DS since Ally moved in. Where do I go to find a decent looking desk for less than $$$$?

TOMBOT, Sunday, 19 June 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

hey jordan, i think i know somebody else who was at that party.

It IS a small internet after all.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 19 June 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

no guesses whatsoever to what I've been playing still.

I'll give you a clue, it's San Andreas.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 19 June 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Where do I go to find a decent looking desk for less than $$$$?

Errr... Ikea maybe? What do you mean by "decent looking"?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 19 June 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I really wish more people would buy Psychonauts...it's a really good platformer like they rarely make anymore...incredibly funny and inventive art design/plot....Tim Schaefer did it, the dude who did Grim Fandango back in the day...I think people on here would dig it.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 19 June 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

It's going to be my next game purchase, whenever I have time to actually play it!

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm waiting for it to turn up on PS2!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 19 June 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

According to Majesco's site, they turned a profit in the 2nd quarter this year, which they credit to Psychonauts and the TV retro arcade plug-in things.

Also, Double Fine is hiring, which is always a good sign.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

We played the demo of Psychonauts t'other day (after someone here suggested it to me). It was... cuter than I expected. Platformer, kinda cool in concept but the execution was pretty standard (Zelda-esque platformy adventure thing). The "emotional baggage" was sooo cute though - crying sad suitcases omg.

Am interested in playing Metronome, that game sounds very interesting. Battling people using sound as weapons!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

the thing about Psychonauts is that it gets FAR better even after the demo. Lungfishopolis and Black Velvetopia are the two key levels.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

Aw man, Nick could totally get the visual effects artist job at DoubleFine... sod moving to SF though. Why arent there any decent jobs in melbourne *sulk*.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 June 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

sent a resume. see what happens.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

oops, that should be "SEND a resume."

i'm not moving to SF, either. PDX is fine for me.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

also, points go for Dogen, the psychotic little light-blue kid who sounds like Bobby on "King of the Hill."

(Zelda-esque platformy adventure thing)

???

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 20 June 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

This is my "break from WoW" game (which, btw, is way more interesting on a PvP server).

It's pretty interesting (=life destroying) to me right now. How does the PvP improve things? I always figured that it made guilds more of a neccesity, because if you can't go out to Ashenvale without getting youur head stepped on, then you'll need some backup for your party.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 20 June 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

yeah, Psychonauts is pretty standard fare, collection-oriented platforming...however, when I was playing it I sort of realized that they don't really make those kind of games that much anymore, and it's still a fun formula when done well...also, they do such a tremendous job of visualizing everything based on various mental illnesses & neurosis that you actually care about the collection....

also, the boss battle with the theater critic is just hilarious.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

. How does the PvP improve things? I always figured that it made guilds more of a neccesity, because if you can't go out to Ashenvale without getting youur head stepped on, then you'll need some backup for your party.

That's pretty much it; the contested areas are CRAZY with the ganking and ambushing. Also, thanks to said ganking and ambushing there's much more of an incentive to level (hence me doing my first complete Deadmines run on the PvP server).

I've also discovered the the crafting professions are completely gimped when compared to the supplying professions. My PvP warrior is a lvl 21 skinner/miner and before I drop 10g on a blue two-handed axe last night, I was sitting on 25g that had been generated with very little effort (skin/mine/instance/AH). Also, zipping through the lowbie areas and skinning everything there is good for at least 1g per run.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

tho the collecting aspect of Psychonauts is kinda overdone, the design of how it's done is great. All the little figment things you collect are tied in with the iconography of the particular level. the Milkman level was particularly great in that aspect, of not only a place, but a particular mood & statement on what that kinda place was like.

also, the mental baggage scenes are cute and kinda creepy.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Katamari is a total bike ride. I haven't played it in months and months and just over the weekend with a couple of games I went back and broke nearly all of my old records + earned all the Eternal levels.

Psychonauts sounds vaguely entertaining.
Is anything else good on the horizon? Ever?
Am I the only person interested in turn-based tactical crap like Front Mission or FFTA or Phantom Brave etc.?

Back to reading thesis papers on Gamasutra.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm working on the eternal levels right now and they are killing me. Which leads my boyfriend to remind me that he has all the named characters.
Um, has anyone else been horrified by the new Kirby Nintendo DS commercial?

note: head to http://www.gametrailers.com to be horrified by all sorts of commercials.

also, the G4tv video that was shot at E3 is equally hilarious. Especially when they send some little clueless pneumatic blonde to interview the guys at Lucasarts' E3 booth.

Especially when they send some little clueless pneumatic blonde to interview the guys at Lucasarts' E3 booth.

FARRRK dont start me on the representation of women in and around the industry argh. If I see one more ATI Radeon card ad, or online RPG game, with a chick with enormous knockers and unfeasibly small garments, I will scream. Bitch, please. Theres plenty of women gamers out there, and we would like to see some cool looking normal women in our games k thx bye.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

found it!. Yeah, here we go. It's kinda funny, really, since G4 coulda found ANY actual gamer chick to go cover this thing, but instead they sent this one who looks like she'd be far happier being a Jager promo girl at the Big Tom's Sports & Grillings in San Jose.

oh yeah, and have we mentioned the chick who'd best be described as "gamer slut/camwhore" that IGN found? She doesn't know jack shit about anything beyond really superficial gaming matters, but, like, she TOTALLY licks a PSP!

it's even in the fuckin' headline: She does exist... a gorgeous woman who loves videogames, manga, anime and licks the PSP!

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

i got star wars knights of old republic for super cheap. i love it! i want to play dark side, but im afraid to.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

Dark Side can be pretty harsh, I felt really bad at times.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

oh i think it would be fun, but does it fuck me up later? does it make the game harder? i totally want to kill that woman for the bounty.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

On the one hand, TV presenter in attractive shocker. On the other hand, would I be right in assuming that the male presenters conform more closely to traditional views of what gamers look like?

IGN is basically Maxim. They need to die.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

Dark side: you get to fry people, and generally do more damage, I think. You can't use heal on yourself, but towards the end you'll probably only have Jedi in you party, and so can just pick a light-side one to heal you (in fact, this may be easier than remembering to do it yourself).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

I'd forgot about Gamasutra.

"GDCTV: Rolling the Dice - The Risks and Rewards of Developing Katamari Damacy by Keita Takahashi [05.10.05] Gamasutra is proud to present GDCTV, a feature showcasing streaming video content of some of the notable sessions of this year's Game Developers Conference. The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Dark Side in the first one can be fun, especially when you drag along Canderous & HK47 to the Dantooine during the "family feud" segment.

also, you pretty much get to off damn near everybody in your party at some point.

the problem i always had with the light/dark side bits was that the contrast was always completely either/or: as others have described it, your choices are either "pet the kitten" or "throw the kitten into the trash compactor, laughing heartily all the while"

the influence system in Kotor2 is choice, too, since it's fun to corrupt the NPCs into being as evil. Sith Lord Ann-Margret will dominate!

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone seen this new city sim game thats in development? I saw an E3 clip of it - it looks like a very very simplified SimCity in visual terms, but it is fully 3d, and has a concept closer to Civ than to SimCity in execution (six "cultures" or something that have to live and work and etc together). In some ways it looked like a total Maxis ripoiff, but it was missing a lot I'd want to see too, a lot of what I like about the SC series. Will have to wait and see how it develops.

Scarface and 50 Cent Sequels Planned
More mayhem and murder is coming your way.
by Wade Steel

July 6, 2005 - Vivendi Universal Games president Phil O'Neil revealed that sequels to the unreleased Scarface: The World is Yours and 50 Cent: Bulletproof are planned, according to an article on GamesIndustry.biz.

According to O'Neil, VU Games sees "a Scarface 2, a Scarface 3, a Scarface 4, and consecutive iterations of that product as being a really important component of what we're trying to do here."

Scarface: The World is Yours features the continuing adventures of Tony Montana, the Cuban drug kingpin who told us to say "'ello to his little friends" (his friends being assault weapons) in the 1983 movie by Brian De Palma. The game will take place in the aftermath of the destruction of Tony's world and will feature Grand Theft Auto style gameplay as you try to rebuild your empire through such dipolmatic means as assassination and property damage in the South Florida of the 1980s.

In a similar vein, 50 Cent: Bulletproof takes us from the glitz and glamor of Tony Montana's South Florida to the gritty underground of New York City. The game will feature the rapper getting caught up in a deadly international conspiracy with the only way for him to get untangled being to blast his way through the crime families of New York.

O'Neil hopes that both the Scarface and 50 Cent brands become "sustainable franchise brands" for VU Games....

GTA CLONES UBER ALLES N' SHIT!

kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Two months later, I'm STILL playing Street v.3, only to beat the goddamn thing. To beat it, you have to play something like 150 matches; I've yet to lose one and I'm clearly just going through the motions at this point with LeBron and T-Mac as partners to my big 7'3" roughster, Miyamoto Musashi.
And I beat Katamari again. In about an hour. God, that games great.
Okay, fifteen matches left. Let's beat this damn thing so I can get psychonauts!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Aw shit, Majesco's in trouble since the CEO split. They're now blaming Psychonauts & Advent Rising for " highest-profile retail disappointments", except that 2-3 months ago they were praising the game for bringing in all the dough.

kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 24 July 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Finally beat it.
Can't really recommend it; too monotonous.

Gamerang.
As I live in Jersey City, new games take about three to five days to appear; your milage may vary.

I've been looking forward to the new Resident Evil for awhile now.

Wahh, our (signed!) copy of Psychonauts is on backorder from DoubleFine.. have to wait til Aug before its shipped :( *sniff*.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

And on that note how the hell can Majesco blame poor sales of the damn thing on its woes when it's been sold out for ages and everyone wants a copy? Huh?

Has anyone played PIRATES! for Xbox?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

i have played it fr pc. it is good but a hodgepodge of various smaller elements that get repetitive after a while. good to be a pirate tho plus sid meier.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 25 July 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

"We Love Katamari" is the first game I have ever actually reserved at the video game store before its release.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 25 July 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

the latest Pirates is lotsa fun, tho pretty much an enhanced version of the original one. Very much a sandbox game, as the entire thing is designed to be replayed.

i like how you can measure the level of "attractiveness" of each governor's daughter by how much titty they show.

e.g. this is the "beautiful daughter:"

http://images.techtree.com/ttimages/story/Sid-Meiers-Pirates-1-t.jpg

(you get a higher score by marrying the hottest daughter of the three)

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

finally beat the ambulance, pimp, and firefighter missions on GTA:SA.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Hahah its like TheSims 2: Sense and Simility!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

Yo, BaNaNa, I've been wondering: is the new Katamari still just $20? That was definitely the appeal to me; a quick, easy-to-play game with a short finish time, properly priced. If it's forty bucks now I'll still get it, I'll just be a bit disappointed.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

okay, just beat the vigilante missions.

there's something elegant & magical about driving a tank down the Las Venturas strip, blasting away at criminals and running over Elvises. It's like seeing "Bambi" or "Snow White" for the first time.

also, with the helicopter guys overhead:

"Hey! You! Stop!"
"Aw, just shoot 'im, you big pussy!"

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

I have also restarted San Andreas, as I previously erased my last save. It's just as much fun as I remember.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

I suppose the Katamari sequel will be PS2 exclusive as well? :(

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Buy one leading games console!

That said, a friend loaned me his Xbox while he's moving, and I've been trying out a few games.

Ninja Gaiden: Why have I heard so much about this when it's just a poor rip off of Onimusha (admittedly based on the first level)?

Jade Empire: Really good RPG in the KOTOR mould, some of the voice acting is a bit meh, but considering the sheer size of it, that's not surprising (and great work on the little girl follower, really touching and disturbing)

Jet Set Radio Future: AW YEAH. All the great bits of the first one, and all of the unintentional fiddly bits removed. And an really enjoyable soundtrack.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I didn't play Ninja Gaiden long enough to get the hang of the controls, it just didn't grab me (borrowed a friend's copy - still have it actually).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

A good friend of mine is in this pop band and I found out that they have a few songs on NCAA Football '06. Crazy.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

The little girl in Jade Empire is so outstandingly awesome. I need to play that game more but NO MUST GET LVL 40 MUST GET MOUNT.

JSRF is one of my five favorite games of all time.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Buy one leading games console!

It seems like it would be lame to buy a PS2 NOW, since I have the other two and I haven't played a videogame in months. I might as well at least wait until the PS3 comes out and I can get a PS2 for $50, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Isn't this the second time through WoW for you, Dan?

JSRF has convinced me that Bis are one of my top five bands of all time, though this rarely lasts more than five minutes after I stop playing (because I'm asleep by then, arf arf)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Define "second". This is the third server I've played on; the character on my first server (where my sister-in-law plays) was abandoned at lvl 37 (human warrior) and the character on my second server (where my buddy from college plays) was abandoned at 20 (tauren hunter). My current PvP character (dwarf warrior) is about 20 bars away from lvl 40 and a MOUNT WOO HOO. I also made myself a supply gimp with this toon (mining, skinning) and as a result have been sitting on 70g for about 7 levels, all the while buying up some relatively high-end gear at Ironforge. Crafting is for suckers, I've decided.

In addition to the main toons listed, I've got four other alts scattered across servers who were abandoned in the teens, so I've never actually done any of the high level quests or fought any of the high level mobs. I also haven't done battlegrounds at all; the one time I tried I got stuck in the queue for 4 hours so fuck a battleground.

Gurubashi Arena bites Fallopian tube because of all the lvl 60s. This is redeemed by the sheer amount of fun generated by ganking in Stranglethorn Vale; I teamed up with a couple of mid-30s rogues and we were taking down not only low-40s but a couple of skulls (had to be 60).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

My Gamecube broke!!1 So I just bought a PS2 with Ico from a friend, but I'm looking for some more RPGs.. Kingdom Hearts (the Disney/Square RPG) is platinum and looks pretty cool, can anyone recommend it? Also, any word on a PAL release of Katamari yet?

coral/coral/coral, Monday, 25 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

KH is a surprisingly fun game, but deliberately simplified. Some of the level designs are great. Better as a week-long rental, tho.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Final Fantasy X-2 is great fun. It's supposed to be quite accessible even if you haven't touched Final Fantasy X, though I had already worked my way through that game, so I can't say for sure.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Yes! In fact ignore my previous post and go straight to Dark Cloud 2/Dark Chronicle (depending on which side of the Atlantic you're on).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Mainly because it fulfils a lot of my recent complaints that all games are the same - FPS in the form of a crime game, war game or scifi game; sports games; or car racing games. GET ONE DIFFERENT IDEA. Then this came out, and I was yea pleased.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

i bought holywood mogul bcuz i couldn't wait for the movies.

http://www.hollywood-mogul.com/

i kinda wish i hadn't cuz Mad TV is free and better.

The movies is obv. going to be a lot better and they are very much business management orientated, mad tv is pretty much just scheduling, but they still fill a big tv computer game shaped hole in my heart until the movies comes out.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

more fun with psychonauts:

turns out you can spot Dart(nee D'artagan), the original protagonist for the game, hiding in the outhouse during the ending movie:

hee hee. and Senor Pokeylope shows up in the radio bit, too

kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 31 July 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm ignoring those links until I finish it.
Oh my god, Psychonauts is good. Really really good. Like, the girlfriend likes it good.
RE4 will have to wait awhile.
Kingdom Hearts is fun, but it's sort of FF-ish; if you're gonna do square/enix why not just get the FFs? Now, if you've already beaten 'em, go for it. A note: KH is actually kinda hard.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I love Final Fantasy but aint really into anything after FF6, there's too much emphasis on the played out "cinematic" storylines (to be fair I haven't played any of the Tactics games). Think i'm gonna get a DS for RPGs as they're backwards compatible, plus it has Animal Crossing AND the unrelased Japan only FF3 is getting a port!!!!

Just finished Illusion of Gaia on the SNES in anticipation of a new Enix Square/Enix game (I think I heard that the Dragon Warrior/Quest series is getting a DS port) - what a brilliant game! Also psyched for the new Mario DS, can't wait to play brand new 2D Mario game.

coral/coral/coral, Sunday, 31 July 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Is animal crossing OUT now?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

I finished Psychonauts two days ago. Excellent!

What should I play next? I like platformers / predominantly non-violent games best, and all I gots is an xbox. Which is sort of an odd match. Suggestions?

Remy (x Jeremy), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

i play the beyond good and evil. it is more of an adventure game than psychonauts, they both have a similar amount of exploration but beyond has more puzzles than jumping/platforming. Its kinda like 'naughts in the sense it has good plot and characterisation and great stylisation within a set of normal, but good, game mechanics. It is pretty non-violent, you fight things but photograph them too.

anyone else reserved their copy of Madden 2006?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 31 July 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

what i've played lately:
Lufia 2 -- horrible plot, gameplay gets boring after a while. fast paced, especially with the lovely turbo button emulators have.

DROD -- getting bored with it

grand theft auto 3 -- just played a modern gta for the first time. it was pretty good. wish it had a better save system. my computer isn't quite powerful enough for it so I'll come back to it after my next upgrade

mega man x4 -- cuz I played all the other ones. it's like all the rest

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Sunday, 31 July 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

DROD!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 1 August 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

on a related note:

Oh look, another list to argue about: IGN's latest "Top 100 Video Games EVAH"

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 1 August 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

also a kid here asked me what my favourite videogame ever was and I thought about it kinda hard and realised that yeah, Jet Set Radio. Which means I *really* need to play Future, I guess. (Remi, that's yr xbox nonviolent also, maybe?)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 1 August 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

i kinda don't like future as much, tho i think i may be the only one. i guess partly because i liked the time limits and where is the streetfighter style moves to do graffiti? oh wait they don't happen anymore. Then there's the movement not being as good either. i might try it again tho as i didn't give it much of a chance and may have suffered from sequel-hatred syndrome.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 1 August 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

what about Shenmue 2?

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 1 August 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

man I played San Andreas like I was possessed until I finished the main story line and then I lost every shred of interest in it and haven't played it even once since.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 1 August 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

I work exactly the opposite: I run around just destroying shit and exploring and I tend to forget the main storyline. Add new game, quit. Repeat.

i like the look of that Okami that was in this month's Edge:
http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/adventure/okami/screenindex.html

but i just bought Jak2 for a tenner so i've been whirling my way around that. nice large city to explore, it's just a pity that all the missions are on the other side of the map and getting there is such a pain due to the maze-like layout and the rubbishy flying vehicles.

dude, you're gunna need a gamecube or ps2 for that.

Xbox is very, very skint on happy-go-lucky fun, whereas the japanese consoles have much more blatant happy japanese lunacy.

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

I want more happy characters bouncing through cartoon worlds.

Me too! Oh wait, you mean in VIDEO GAMES, damn ;P

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

I know. But I can't afford either, and the xbox was a gift. I'm hoping to buy a PS3, though. I don't demand total lunacy... just a bit more lightheared gaming. I've got a really short fuse for games based on death, carnage, and revenge.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

ROME: TOTAL WAR!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I keep forgetting to buy one of them because I was broke after getting my mount and didn't have enough gold at the time. However, thanks to being a supply whore (skinning/mining), I can generate 10g practically at will; if I didn't have to keep updating my equipment because I'm a warrior, I'd be sitting on something like 300g right now as opposed to 12g.

A coworker also pointed me at an awesome macro that lets you instantly switch to a high DPS weapon for instant cast spells/skills and switch back afterwards. My Overpowers, Cleaves and Executes are about to become SICK.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

You switch back to the other weapon for resists or something? There was an exploit for a while (and may still be) where Rogues were using the nearly-but-not-quite-simultaneous nature of the switch and the skill to use swords, axes, maces etc for dagger-only skills.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

You guys are dorks

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

The idea is that you use a faster weapon for normal hand-to-hand fighting but use this addon macro to instant switch to a higher damage, slower weapon for your instant cast abilities. For me, I want to be able to switch back so that I can use a two-handed weapon for my instant cast a bilities but do my melee fighting with a shield. Also, you can do cool things like bind ueber ammo to a particular ranged attack, meaning that you can maximize the damage you do with special ranged attacks without wasting it on normal shots.

The Economist does video games:

http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=4246109

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

from that article:

In June, Senator Charles Schumer held a press conference to draw attention to the M-rated game “25 to Life”, in which players take the role of a policeman or a gangster. “Little Johnny should be learning how to read, not how to kill cops,” he declared. True, but little Johnny should not be smoking, drinking alcohol or watching Quentin Tarantino movies either. Just as there are rules to try to keep these things out of little Johnny's hands, there are rules for video games too. Political opportunism is part of the explanation for this double standard: many of gaming's critics in America are Democrats playing to the centre...

beatles fan, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

It was twice as much. I won't use it enough to warrant that much money. Also, I just want to play old NES games, so the GBA should do it. I got: Bomberman, Super Mario Bros, Ice Climber, Donkey Kong and Zelda. I may get Minish Cap...

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

kingfish, you are the only person here who doesn't already have a subscription to that magazine. In fact, Andrew Farrell and I wrote that article.

As far as Minish Cap is concerned, you have to finish it before school starts, and your paper on it is due the last week of October. It is worth 30% of your Fall semester grade.

For your 15-page paper due in the spring, you may choose one from the following:

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Zelda: A Link To The Past
Metroid: Zero Mission
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn Of Souls
Harvest Moon: Friends Of Mineral Town
Metal Slug Advance
Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits
River City Ransom EX
Lego Star Wars

GBA 201 syllabus aside, I'm kind of interested in
Riviera and
Sigma Star Saga, but I'm not playing much lately so I dunno if I'm ready to put any money into either.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Also get Wario Ware (the first one). Do not get Dr. Mario, since there is a full version of it that is easily unlockable in Wario Ware.

Oh, and don't forget Mario Kart, Super Mario 3, Super Mario World, and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow!

had great fun yesterday. played Serious Sam on xbox for 6 hours straight, had it for months but never started it until now.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Front Mission 4 is definitely only for huge fans of giant robot combat. This game has so much wrong with it, if it wasn't so much fun painting my robots tacky-ass colors and thinking of ways to make them all asymmetrical and ridiculous-looking I'd be really pissed off with it. Squarenix was damned clever making the different camouflage patterns trickle into availability as you progress through the game. The lesson here is an important one for designers: Your twisting, intertwining globoconspiracy plotlines with their quasi-religious and/or metaphysical undertones are not rewarding. Spend less time thinking up clever ways to connect one fight to the next and more time giving us different ways to play dress-up/customization with our character(s)+equipment. WTF does anybody think Gran Turismo is so popular? Because it lets you compete in 120-lap races?

I could go on and on. What it boils down to is that I and apparently a lot of other gamers (Sims fans especially?) seem to enjoy playing "dress-up" as much or more than playing the actual game. This could also be the tipping point difference between graphical MMORPGS and the old MUDs that people are missing - it's not even the gameplay, it's the visual dress-up. Even Gabe at Penny Arcade is bitching about WoW now because apparently all level 60 rogues wear the same clothes and he wants to be special.

TOMBOT, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

The way FM4 starts out, it has two completely separate storylines that apparently converge at some point. That should be meagerly entertaining, since the first one is a made-for-tv eurofuture military-industrial conspiracy doo pile and the second one begins as an unabashed Three Kings/Kelley's Heroes ripoff.

TOMBOT, Monday, 15 August 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I'm very far into Metroid Prime, I'm fighting the big plant thing with the spotlights. It's great though, the control scheme is cool even if I get mixed up sometimes.

Madden 2006 is pretty good, but the new passing system doesn't work well and the Superstar mode is just about the worst thing ever. But luckily you can turn the new passing system off and then it becomes the best Madden ever (especially since the Chargers are actually good in it).

And the Katamari sequel(with the FUGLY-ass boxart) hits in like 3 weeks or so.

dammit, i can't find a copy of the japanese boxart, which is clearly superior. It has a photo of a happy funtime japanese crowd waving at the camera, holding up signs. Amidst the crowd are various zoo animals.

Also, giraffes are smiling from the roof of a nearby building.

dig this: Jack Thompson, the loony miami lawyer trying to get "violent video games" banned, has now set his sights on Rockstar's The Warriors game, which is due to come out(and plaa-aaay) in a few months.

I'll likely be buying Warriors on October release.
Still slogging through Psychonauts. I think I hit the fun wall; I just wanna end it now.

kingfish fucked up his login (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

I think the only video-game hype I've seen in the past few months has been for the trio of movie-based games coming out this fall: Warriors, Godfather, and Scarface. Will any of these be any good? (I know Rockstar is doing the Warriors, but I don't trust them anymore after State of Emergency and Red Dead Revolver) -

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Will any of these be any good?

since they'll all be GTA/Max Payne clones, and are movie-licenses, smart money is on "not much."

i mean, i think the problem with some of these games is that the majority of the money gets poured into the licensing elements at the cost of gameplay and design; they'll put up the dosh to get Marlon Brando in there, but they will only have minimal focus on the actual "game" part. This is why licensed titles suck the ass. The companies that can afford the license tend to expect the titles to turn a profit on the license alone, and all that other shit ain't necessary.

i mean, Vice City did pretty much anything the Scarface game could ever do; will the added superficial elements("Look! You're actually PLAYING Scarface! Here comes a character that actually looks like Robert Loggia!") cover the hole in enjoyment from not having a top or even competent gamedev work on the thing?

They'll all look VERY pretty, no doubt. And have all the proper music/voice acting/etc. The superficial elements will be represented more than adequately.

I'd favor The Warriors as having the best chance at being worthwhile, but i wouldn't put money on any of 'em. More than likely, all three titles will wind up somewhere in the range of "enh" to "not too bad; i played like half of it before i got bored."

but hey, weirder shit has happened...

kingfish fucked up his login (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

the interesting thing will be the game for Peter Jackson's King Kong. The movie company specifically sought out the gamedev house from Beyond Good & Evil(i think) to work on it.

and who doesn't want to play Adrien Brody in a video game?

(sorry that was a bit too snappy wasn't it)

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

I signed up for Warcrack last weekend, the 10 day trial (which is almost out now). I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and to be honest I wasnt moved that much. I found the control system a bit awkward, but I admit I'm not an FPS player so constant moving/attacking stuff isnt my bag. I got to level 3 as a night elf priestess, killing a few animals and whatnot, and got bored. Really, is there anything to this game apart from doing missons and going on fights in a guild? Maybe thats the point (I await Dan to rain fire on me soon heh), but I didnt get into it. I might give it more of a try this weekend before I give up tho.

Couldnt get the hang of the chat system either, and a friend of mine /w ing me didnt help, I had no idea how to reply just to him.

Then I started on Evil Genius. Now, this one is fun! Its very very much like Dungeon Keeper. The only real flaw is it isnt terribly intuitive, and again, the controls werent ideal, plus my poor laptop was just a bit too slow. Will have a go on my fast games pc and see if that helps.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

I'd read a games board.
The Evil Genius demo I played was marred by horrible controls. So yesterday I went and bought Vampire: Bloodlines because, hey, I'm stuck at my parents' and they have a PC. I get it home and realize their 3D card sucks way too much to run the game--this is the precise reason I switched to consoles.

adam (adam), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

The EG controls are awful! You can only scroll with the arrow keys or by moving the mouse offscreen, which kept happening BY ACCIDENT all the time when Id watch a videofile. You can zoom out to see enough of the island. It was quite frustrating. Still liked it despite that but would like it a lot more if it wasnt so stupidheaded.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

You CANT zoom out, I meant, gah.

Make an ILG kingfish!

conceptual rolodex, Friday, 16 September 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Should we call it ILG or ILVG?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Trayce:

To reply to someone directly, hit the enter key to bring up the chat window and type "/r " OR hit the R key when the chat window is closed; that will reply to the last person who sent you a private message.

Various chat commands:

"/s " = Say; the general chat command that talks to everyone in your vicinity
"/w [name]" or "/t [name]" = Whisper/Tell [name]; this is a private message to a specific player
"/r " = Reply; sends a private message to the last person who sent you a private message
"/p " = Party; sends a message to the people in your party
"/y " = Yell; sends a message to everyone in your current zone and is highly annoying so never ever ever ever ever use it
"/(number) " = Chat channel number; sends a message to a particular chat channel

The point of WoW is doing quests and grouping with people; if that aspect of the gameplay didn't grab you, it probably won't. Give it another chance, though; most of the character classes aren't that interesting until you hit level 10, which you should be able to do over the weekend. (I'm actually surprised you have up at level 3! Also priests start out VERY slowly; try a rogue or a warlock if you want to blow through the newbie levels really quickly.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

If someone's name in [brackets] is still visible on your screen, you can whisper to them by clicking on their name (sometimes you have to do this twice, dunno why).

Priests can be fairly dangerous by themselves, but they're designed for use in a party, where they keep everyone healthy and at the top of their game so that there's less time waiting to eat (or waiting to find their corpse). If you get up to a higher level, you'll be very popular, though you're playing a female in WoW, so you've probably been "popular" enough at one point or another.

How long did you actually play for? If you type /played, it should tell you.

Dan's right though. There's more in the game beyond hitting things and playing with others (and the dozen things that 30 minutes more play might bring one), but there's not a hell of a lot more.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Allegedly a properly-specced shadow priest has the highest DOT spell in the game. Does that sound right to you?

You know how I was going to level my warrior up to 60 no matter what? Um. I got bored and started up a priest. He's at level 19 now and I have to say that playing the healer of is really, really fun... WHEN YOU ARE IN A PARTY WITH PEOPLE WHO CAN PLAY. I was in a group yesterday that was trying to do the Deadmines and our tank was a lvl 23 dwarf warrior whose idea of running the instance was to aggro everything in sight and then run back to the casters begging for healing. Fucking dipshit.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

It took me SO LONG to actually get a group who could play the Deadmines at all, and when I finally did, it was despite a paladin who was a Wielder of the forces of Life and Death, IE will rez people after whining about it for five minutes, but is more commonly seen coming around a corner with 4 elites in tow. I meant to kick him before the main boss out of Pure Unadulterated Spite, but forgot.

I think the same would be true of Ragefire Chasm, except it's a lot easier to find a higher level character to power through the instance after someone goes AWOL.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha! We had a paladin who was acting as a secondary tank but we really needed him to be a secondary healer thanks to Warrior Fuckface. Our rogue finally disbanded the group in disgust and I really couldn't blame him (besides I got a level out of it, ha).

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

You know I think I'm a bit unnerved by the idea of playing in a group actually! The whole "there are actual other people - possibly annoying gits - playing these guys" will take getting used to. I admit I only played it for about an hour, I will give it another try though - thanks for the suggestions Dan/Andrew :)

I used to really hate the idea of grouping as well, particularly when I encountered my first 13 year old. The thing that got me over it was grouping with my sister-in-law, a friend from college, and a coworker.

My priest is level 22 now! He is slowly becoming awesome but I need to park him in an inn and get his rested bonus up, so perhaps I'll grind out a few more levels with my 44 warrior for a while.
