it looks like you're blessing some food or something.

i'm probably sending a text message!

oh, that's what you're saying now...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:12 (twenty-four years ago)

weird. the "new answers" page isn't refreshing so that the active threads move to the top.

huh. it IS 2001! It's my first year out of school! jaymc & i recently broke up. i'm being a jerk to jaymc....oh the memories.

Pizza Hut pizza tastes exactly the same, i.e., a lot like the box it comes in.

Kelsey, in a week you and me and Colin will go to the Chicago Botanical Garden and then go to Banana Leaf for dinner.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:29 (twenty-four years ago)

awkward times ahoy!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:30 (twenty-four years ago)

We'll talk about Memento. I'll still be bummed that I had to see it by myself, since I'm not yet used to going to see movies by myself.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:30 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't even want to talk about what I was doing this time four years ago. It's too much shame.

Ok, ok. I lived with my mother for five months. Bad times. Bad, bad times.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:33 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan sure is spending a lot of time in Houston, working on his movie. I wonder if he'll ever come back. The house we live in is really moldy. I wish my dad had a job. Ahh, June 2001.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:34 (twenty-four years ago)

i hate this time in my life, looking back on it. i treat jaymc like crap, i get all sucked into cs & don't break things off to have any down time between relationships, which was a mistake. also: cs = mistake in many ways.
i also cut my finger really badly while washing dishes & having a bad conversation with you on the phone. it leaves this giant scar that i figured i deserved.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:36 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm living in boston, and buying too many country music lps. also i just blew off a girl named teresa because she didn't like a godard movie.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:37 (twenty-four years ago)

you didn't treat me like CRAP. we broke up. i needed to get over it.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:38 (twenty-four years ago)

breaking up is hard to do.

Amst: classic.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:38 (twenty-four years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:40 (twenty-four years ago)

i spend saturday afternoons taking photos in south boston and eating lunch at the pig & whistle.

("the one who kept wanting")

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:41 (twenty-four years ago)

the whole thing was messy. oh well. glad we're past it now.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:43 (twenty-four years ago)

I have just left what will easily be the worst relationship in my life. We broke up, I moved to the couch, she immediately started bringing other guys in the back door in the middle of the night. I go to the bathroom in the morning, and there's Some Dude in bed with the girl I broke up with 4 days ago. What a terrible person, this girl. No wonder I moved in with my mother.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:43 (twenty-four years ago)

I just got laid off from my fancy pants tech writing job and am telling Jeff via ICQ that I'll be moving in with him in North Carolina. With my cat. In approximately one month, I will wander into a local redneck bar after the first of many living-arrangement-adjustment fights with Jeff and accidentally get a job there, thus starting the three-year series of events that eventually led me to go to law school in Chicago and meet all you people, many of whom celebrated joined us in celebration of our wedding.

June 2001 was a seriously very pivotal time in my life. Kind of weird that the date reset to that particular month.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:45 (twenty-four years ago)

Orcar Wilde said that our machinery is beautiful. I think he may have meant it as an insult.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Nick's idea to call the threads Chicago 8, Chicago 9, etc, like the albums, is brilliant. My thread title is dumb.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Well, maybe not dumb. Too prosaic by half.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

At least you didn't use Sandburg. That would have been cliche.

There are ILX thongs? Where do I get one? We could just sport our Manowar panties instead. (Note: My website is the third google result for "manowar panties.")

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I just put a rather long, uninteresting description of the factory across the river from my work on TITTWIS. But seriously - you should see it. It's the one next to the Kendall c0llege building on halsted. There are all these huge rusty boxes and conveyer belts and boats involved. Actually, I'm sure you've all seen it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Halstead btwn Chicago Ave. and Goose Island? I think I know the one. It is a remarkable industrial landscape. The whole area is.

Did you know that Goose Island is a protected industrial zone? Historical, they say. So no converting anything into pricey condos.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Exactly.

That's cool. Right behind my work is the goose island boat yard. Across from that is an old abandoned warehouse building that says "RECORD STORAGE" on it. Obviously, it was for papers, but I like to pretend it was full of vinyl records.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Did you peeps see this? It's confusing to me.

But what am I gonna put my weed in?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Clothes are a container! Did they ever think about that? Heck, my BODY is a container - of my soul!

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

This is a music festival. Leave your soul at the gate, please.

I think I left my soul at Lollapalooza 96 and forgot to pick it up on the way out.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

One of my co-workers got Wyclef Jean's phone number 2 nights ago!!! She's superfine so it's not really that shocking.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

This just goes back to the whole no re-entry thing I was bitching about before. Oh, and according to the news this morning it's supposed to be 90 and 92 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

This is why music festivals suck. One of the many reasons.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Agreed. It's kind of funny to me that I'm going to see two of them in successive weekends, but I guess I just LOVE THE MUSIC TOO MUCH!!!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

But I do sort of hate events where I feel herded into large spaces, and especially where there's security barking at me.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait to get felt up!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Sweet, I am guessing that I would like to go to that festival. I hope they announce the lineup soon, the lazy bastards.

Btw, I'm playing at the Green Mill again on June 29th & 30th. If my band decides against doing any recording that weekend, perhaps we could have a lunch FAP or something on that Saturday?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I take the new thread title as reference to the Randolph St. bridge which is right across the street from my office. It's been up / down like ten times already today. Beautiful indeed.

teh Nü and Impröved john n chicago (frankE), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I hope they announce the lineup soon, the lazy bastards.

But they have!

Some Jazz musician is often called the greatest living exponent of experimental Jazz.

See? Some Jazz musician is headlining.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Ha! But wait, there's more:

She is a thrillingly inventive guitarist and a peerless showman...

can anyone recommend me some dudes to help load up a big rent-a-truck? i'm too weakling to do it myself and i've already had friends help me move about 100 times. i found two decent-seeming ads on craiglist but maybe someone has a personal reference??

I'm just glad people recognize that I'm weak! My boss at my old job was always asking me to carry boxes for her -- apparently because I have a penis, since she never troubled my female co-workers.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Check out the group of day laborers at Albany Park. They just hang around and wait for people to come offer them jobs and they are criminally underpaid. So make them a decent offer and don't let them underbid themselves to try and get the job.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

The CS BUZZ section features a Ch0pard watch, which retails for only $54,930! What a deal!

Sleeper sofas are sons o' bitches.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

There's actually an Albany Park Worker's Center where you can go. I'm going in to work in about 45 minutes and if you're interested, email me and I'll send you the details of where and how to hire some folks. You can use the ILX email since I can't figure out a way to communicate my regular email address without making it googlable, since it's my damn name.

Hiring people from the Albany Park Worker's Center is fully sanctioned by the progressive labor movement community. FYI!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I used to own a sofa bed and I lived in an apartment on the third floor of a tall old house and when I moved out, I just left the damn thing up there. Sofa beds suck.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

ALSO even working at Progressive Non Profit Labor Movement 'r' Us, at least once a week someone will come and ask if there are any men available to help move boxes or furniture or something and never ask the ladies. On the one hand, it's kind of irritating since I'm bigger than one dude and definitely in better shape than the other (which should tell you a lot about his physical fitness...) but on the other hand, moving heavy things sucks.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

They're a pain in the ass just to get through a doorway, much less going downstairs. You have to figure out how to angle it without the mattress jumping out.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Or having the whole thing CRUSH YOU LIKE A BUG.

HA! I typed "crush you like a gub" first.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

In moving sofa beds I've found it's a good idea to bind the bed section closed in some way with bungee cords or the like.

Ice AND a hott water pot.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

God I need to work in a real office again. I'm not allowed to eat here, there's no kitchen (except for the one upstairs, but I'm not allowed in there), no microwave, nothing. I used to bring food and eat at my desk, but was asked not to do that anymore. Which pretty much means I'm forced to eat out every day. Unless I want to sit on the curb out front and eat cold food out of a tupperware container. Which I do not.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

What? You can't eat at your desk?!?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Not anymore. Lady of the house does not want food in here. It attracts bugs.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I bet she attracts more bugs than your food would.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't really mean anything, obviously.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

My office mate across the room here has stopped eating altogether. He drinks soda all day because he can't afford to eat out. Because we make shit money.

Man, I thought I had it sooooo good when I got this nice computer. Nothing makes up for working for crazy people.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Don't make crushed-by-moving-furniture jokes! A friend of mine in Evanston died that way! Amateurist might even remember seeing the news on it; didn't we talk about it once?

i do remember that, nabisco; i wasn't really making a joke per se. i honestly would be frightened of moving a sofa without tying the mattress part down first. in fact i'd just have a friend move the sofa w/me if it wasn't so difficult the first time (and so scary) that i vowed never to do it myself again.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

what do you *do* now, k3n4n?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Assistant Editor, Small Crappy Magazine That Nobody Reads.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

and you can't eat at work?!?!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

No sir. It's the bottom floor of someone's house, so there's no kitchen. But not being able to eat at the desk is just stupid. It's not like I get ketchup on the keyboard or anything.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

My keyboard is caked in crumbs.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

"Amateur(ist)": you've got reply!

I made the crushed-by-furniture joke, not knowing that this happened to someone's friend -- I apologize for the joke, and I'm very sorry about your friend.

At my old cushy tech job during the dot com boom we got free soda and coffee. Here in Non Profit Land there's always some sort of food hanging around in the kitchen that people can eat, and the director's cousin is part of a worker-run coffee grower's coop in Guatemala so not only do we get free coffee, fringe benefit as just the way things tend to happen around here.

I'm at said director's desk and something terrible is going on with his keyboard wherein the right arrow doesn't work and every time I type an apostrophe I also get a semi-colon. Like this: ';';';';';

And every time I type a colon, I get quotation marks: ":":":":":

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Also his keyboard magically deleted half of the above message so that it makes no sense. I don';t even remember what I was trying to say.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

After all my bitching, I walk in the kitchen and someone has left a carton of Vanilla Milkshake Whoppers on the table. I am pigging out.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh if anyone else is interested - http://www.daylaborchicago.com/

For all your moving needs. Or carpentry, drywall, concrete, landscaping, painting, tiling... AND MORE!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

There are "Vanilla Milkshake" Whoppers now?

(NB oof bad communication: don't worry I am not like eternally broken-up over my friend's couch-death, which had more to do with a faulty staircase than anything else -- it was just funny to see the "crushed" line and think "you really could be! It happened to this guy! That I used to know!")

In related Chicago news, has anyone ever seen Laurent from Pelican DJ? He's scheduled to DJ at Intonation, but I can't imagine what -- I don't recall him being into anything dancelike in college, and I spent half my time at the Evanston Reckless reorganizing his hold shelf of not-very-DJable prog-rock.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Vanilla Milkshake Whoppers appear to be regular Whoppers but with white chocolate on the outside instead of, um, brown chocolate. They are apparently available "for a limited time only!"

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

White chocolate is not even chocolate. Inferior!

(I like it, though.)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

RAGE! This warehouse owner called me back about some unpaid overtime he owes to a former employee and he told me that the former employee was stupid and had no skills and that was his excuse for not paying him!

That's not an acceptable reason for not paying someone! WOW am I angry!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

What *is* an acceptable reason for not paying someone?

Well, the Fair Labor Standards Act lists certain types of employees that are exempt from minimum wage and overtime laws, (strangest of all being movie theater employees), but outside those exemptions (which are often abused by employers anyway), there isn't one.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

i'm getting more money! i just don't know how much yet . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Hooray money!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

have you heard anything yet?! poopsticks. maybe i'll ask lauren directly tomorrow....

Not yet, but I didn't really expect anything till friday maybe, or next week.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

You're so employable, Jeff. Don't fret too much.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

This is a question for the lay-dees (although non-lay-dees can answer if they'd like): What are you wearing to the Intonation Music Festival this weekend? I'm struggling to find the right balance between comfort, ease of peeing in what I assume will be nasty festival bathroom accomodations, temperature, and not looking like a total dork.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm still not sure I'm going. Because it's going to be such a sweat-fest, and I'll be dehydrated pretty much constantly, since I often am anyway. You all don't want to see me like that.

Hi, Chicago. I'm listening to Fun House for the second time in a row. I'm loose.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

You sure you have the tits to fill it out?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

Getting there...

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

A Chicago question: I've been offered a big discount on a package holiday, and one of the possible destinations is Chicago. 8 Days from the end of July. Hotel near Grant Park. I know the city a little bit, but have never spent more than a weekend (work/conferences or stopovers en route elsewhere). I have a couple of family members to visit, and a couple of friends would visit me while I'm there. So give me your biased opinions regarding things like weather and things to do.

jadrenos (jadrenos), Thursday, 14 July 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

I was going to wear a tank top, but I don't know what to wear on bottom! I normally wear jeans or a skirt but it might be too hot for jeans and I want to be able to sit on the ground... So maybe I'll end up wearing these embarassing cargo shorts I've had for forever... They are the only pair of shorts I own that fit me, and I only when I pull the strings, so they resemble adult diapers. Ugh.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

When would you be coming, jadrenos?

The weather is pretty good right now. Some days it gets up into the 90s, but other days it is perfect. If you get to decide, maybe you should come here in early October or so when it cools off a little and fall is in the air, but it's not freezing cold yet?

It is fun just to walk aroud and explore here. What kind of things do you like to do?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I'd be coming probably around the 26th July. I don't really get to decide because of the discount offer I have. Plus my friends and family will be in the area over the summer.
The last time I was in Chicago was last October, when the weather was, indeed, nice, if a little windy, but that's to be expected (although a pedant friend told me that 'windy city' originally referred to the longwinded politicians - particularly during the 1893 Expo - rather than to weather...).
I like to just walk around and explore. That's pretty much what I like to do, but would do some galleries and museums, shows and the like.

jadrenos (jadrenos), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

The politicians things is an urban legend, btw.

Yeah, weather should be nice when you're here. Might get a little hot, but not unbearable. There are plenty of awesome parks and museums if you're near Grant Park. That's right next to downtown, so near the Art Institute, Millenium Park, the lake, etc. Plenty of touristy things to do.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

DON'T GIVE IN, SARAH! Resist the shorts! JEANS 4 EVAH!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Maybe you're right, Jordan. Maybe you're right. But also I'm a huge wuss when it comes to fainting in the heat. So, Kenan, you should come too! We can pass out together from dehydration!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

The politicians things is an urban legend, btw.

But an incredibly pervasive one.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/041112.html

Barry next turned to Chicago's nickname "the Windy City." Common but erroneous belief had it that the sobriquet was coined circa 1890 by New York newspaper editor Charles Dana to lampoon Chicago's logorrheic boosters. Barry established that, on the contrary, the term was already being used in 1885 with reference to the city's lake breezes, and he's since found instances dating from as early as 1876. Ignorance dies hard in Chicago, however. Despite Barry's tireless efforts, the discredited Charles Dana story is still being flogged by leading local institutions, including the Chicago Historical Society, the Chicago Public Library, and the Chicago Tribune. Just a few weeks ago I got yet another note from Barry lamenting that nobody pays any attention to him, he gets no respect, etc.

The politician story has that irony that people dig and people feel smart when they say it. But "The Windy City" originally referred to the fact that Chicago is... windy.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Also, that whole article I linked is fascinating. Typhoid? Myth or reality?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Except Chicago isn't particularly windy! Or did I just spend too much time around the Great Lakes to notice it? Sure, down in the Loop the buildings channel wind into some pretty good tunnels, but apart from that I've never felt that Chicago was so much windier than anywhere else that it needed a nickname. (New York, on the other hand, does indeed feel and smell like a gigantic half-rotten crab-apple.)

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

You get wind off the lake. It's windier than some places. It's not near as windy as others. Boston, I think, has waaaaaay more wind.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I like the official motto better -- Urbus in Horto, "City in a Garden."

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Sarah, why don't you just wear a skirt? Show off those gams?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I walked to work today, right down Division. I took my camera. I didn't find much to take pictures of. Goose Island is not nice. Cabrini Green is just damn depressing. Nice shot of the skyline over Seward Park. Then I was at work.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Maddie wasn't planning on coming to Chicago with me at the end of the month, but she said that she would if she could meet J3ssa. :>

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

To the Chicago visitor: You're also close to all the train lines so you can leave the loop and do cool stuff like eat German food in Lincoln Square (brown line but I forget which stop) (Jeff, what was the name of that awesome restaurant where we ate for Jesse's birthday?) or eat Vietnamese food off the Argyle red line stop (and then walk to Clark St. and get drunk with me at Simon's or the Hop Leaf - an awesome Belgian beer bar). You can take the Blue line to the 18th St. stop and visit Pilsen and the Mexican Cultural Center. I'm sure other people here could make good neighborhood recomendations - the real coolness of Chicago hides in the 'hoods.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking a skirt is a good choice because there's less chance of dragging it through the filth of an overflowing porta potty and I can get a nice breeze on my bum. I actually think I'm going to go shopping a little after work today. Law school + wedding = pullapartfatty and my clothes are just a little too tight to be comfortable outside all day in 90 degree weather.

And Kelsey, you're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the cheese. In classic wedding form (so I understand, anyway) I don't remember if I actually ate any cheese (or much of anything else), much less what kind of cheese I may or may not have actually eaten.

I think our names for our non-existant children were, Louise Bell, Walter Jackson, Walter Ivan, or something else. They all involved Walter and Louise though, because Lou and Walt are great short versions of names.

Dudes & ladies, I bought the most interesting book today:

Chicago by Gaslight:
A History of Chicago's Netherworld: 1880–1920
Richard Lindberg
ISBN: 0-89733-421-3
Price: $14.00

This book revises the picture of the glittering Chicago of impressive mansions and museums; it exposes the city's corrupt underbelly and the realities of life in an age which is often assumed to have been simpler and more moral than ours. Includes chapters on the Haymarket riot, the gamblers' wars, the notorious levee red-light district and institutionalized graft.

Reviews
"Lindberg's panoramic view of Chicago . . . is studded with lively anecdotes of the social elite, powerful gamblers, criminals and corrupt 'boodling' politicians."––Publishers Weekly

what's in it for you? (dymaxia), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

BOODLIN'!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

i'm tired of seeing that "murder in the white palace" or whatever book on the train.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY

actually, i was just thinking about how i see that book all the time on the train, too!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Books that people read on the train:
DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY
THE LOVELY BONES
TIME TRAVELLER'S WIFE
And oddly enough, CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, because I mean, yeah, it's an awesome book, but it's not new or anything, so why do I see so many people reading it?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

i liked the time traveler's wife, for what it's worth.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying they're bad books! Sarah liked TTW also. I haven't read any of those except CoD. Devil in the White City looks vaguely interesting, I'd read if I found it cheap at a yard sale or something. TTW and Lovely Bones both look too depressing for me.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

lovely bones was good 1/2 way through. devil got sorta annoying b/c of some of the writing & the predicable pattern with switching between the world's fair & the murderer. i also wanted more of the murderer. but they're both "light" reading, which is always good for the EL.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

I found an old journal entry I wrote after reading The Lovely Bones: I ripped it apart but pretty incisively, I thought. Basically, the first half of the book works because it's a gripping mystery, but once that ceases to be the focal point, then you're stuck with these characters who you realize have never really been fleshed out at any point but whom you're nonetheless supposed to have sympathy for simply because of the circumstances of the plot. Sorry, Alice.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

FYI, y'all:

INTONATION FESTIVAL & WATER!

SOME HAVE BEEN UP IN ARMS ABOUT WATER. HERE IS THE POLICY. BASICALLY, CHEAP WATER IS AVAILABLE FOR A BUCK OR YOU CAN BRING IN TWO SEALED BOTTLES. NO FOOD.

WATER
Each festival guest will be allowed to bring TWO SEALED BOTTLES of water. We will be selling water at the price of $1 per half-liter on the grounds. Additionally, the Chicago Park District will be providing several water stations. It's summer, it's Chicago-- it will be hot. Please keep yourself hydrated. Believe it or not, beer is not hydrating.
BACKPACKS
You can bring small backpacks and purses if you wish, but no large bags or coolers (hard or soft). No contraband. The following will not be allowed to be brought inside: alcoholic beverages of any kind, food and beverage of any kind (except TWO SEALED BOTTLES of water), recording devices, professional cameras, video equipment, lounge and elevated chairs (collapsing folding chairs are okay), laser pointers, drugs, and/or ghettoblasters. Once on the grounds, please stay on the grounds until you are ready to leave; there will be no re-entry.

ghettoblasters

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Are the Ghettoblasters playing Intonation?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure lots of people going to the festival have large, shiny fake chrome plastic tape players they rock on their shoulders while walking around to the beat of Ladies Love Cool James. I'm thinking an Audiovox or maybe a YORX.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of books, did you people know that Neil Gaiman makes a big deal out of House on the Rock in American Gods? I did not know this, despite having actually read the book. Jeff ILLed it so I'm going to re-read it just for that very reason.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

ILLed?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

that festival sounds like hell. no food? two sealed bottles of water?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 15 July 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

C/D? Leaving yr phone # for the waitress on a bill at a cafe with your name, realizing you probably should have left it on a napkin, as the place probably needs to keep the check?

What are the chances next time I go there, my bill will be stapled to the wall for amusement?

deej.., Friday, 15 July 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

ILL = Inter Library Loan

deej as a veteran of many restaurant jobs, I'd say about 100%. (Which isn't to say that she won't call you, just that there is nothing more merciless than front of the house co-workers.)

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I will admit that Maddie and I were inspired to make our first trip to House on the Rock after reading American Gods.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

I have Lovely Bones at home on the shelf to read, eventually. So should I read so we can talk about it? Or is it that bad, jaymc?

This was a bit upthread, but I love the name Louise. I can understand a fond feeling for the name Walt, but also it was my grumpy grandfather's name and now my grumpy uncle's name.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

i think maybe 10 times people have started in on me, "oh i read this *amazing* book,

It's not amazing. It's interesting and educational at best. It's not terribly well written, though.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Lovely Bones just SOUNDS bad. How could it be any good?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it sounds so inspirational. So Oprah. It has a happy tearjerker ending, I hear. Blech.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

This weekend is going to be crazy. I'm getting a little stressed for some reason.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm going tomorrow. Probably not Sunday as well. You can get tickets at the gate, right?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Nick - maybe that's because you're in charge? Responsibility is no fun on a merriment weekend. Just get drunk and forget to call people and you'll never have to be in charge again.

Kenan - yes you can.

Sarah - Louise is my mom's middle name, or it was, but she changed her middle name to her maiden name when she married my stepfather because she hates the name Louise. Belle is part of Jeff's grandma's name. Walter is my grandfather's middle name but he's not grumpy so it's cool. And Jackson is Jeff's grandfather's name. Ivan is just a name we like. I'm big on naming hypothetical children after existing relatives that I like.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

I just want to meet everybody and do everything and it's too much stress. I need to chill out.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry Nick! I hope you feel better.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

hello homies. i'm back. iowa was weird. i also visited (attended a funeral in) grantfork, IL: population 250. two churches, two taverns and one awesome bowling alley.

anyway, i'm glad to be back.

in case anyone wondered what i'm wearing (ladies?) to the festival, i think i've settled on a tank top and skirt. i fear it's going to rain and jeans + rain = chafing. i'd rather risk someone peeping my panties than have to deal with chafing.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, wet jeans are the worst. I remember wearing mostly damp jeans straight out of the dryer one too many times in my life.

I like lots of names! My kids are going to have like 7 names each. Also, I like lots of snobby names only little girls are supposed to like - Chloe, Lexi, Alex... And lots of old-fashioned names. I feel sorry for them and they don't even exist.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

I knew some kids back in Mpls that had two names each. Dad called them one thing, Mom called them the other. A little weird, but it worked.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Jeff - I'm at work now, sorry!

I'm wearing a tank top and skirt, too. I actually went and bought me a skirt yesterday, even.

I like the name Chloe a lot, and I like old fashioned names, too. Hence, Louise and Walter! But I just think "Walter Jackson" sounds like the name of a president or something.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realize how great Walter was until you mentioned it. Especially "Walt."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

By the way, I just learned that it is indeed possible for me to wake up at 9:47, the victim of an unset alarm, and walk in the door at work at 10:12. Of course, I am now $20 poorer. But I love cabs.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I hope our hypothetical son Walter Jackson is more the soul-touching singer type and less the wool jacket in the summer type.

PS Welcome back, Amanda! Or do you prefer Mandy? Or Manda? Or Man? Or And? Or Nda?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Technically, I have to be at work any time before 9:30. The number of times this year that I actually have come in before 9:30, though, I can count on two hands. It's usually more like 9:45. So I was really only a half-hour later than usual.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

is walter jackson wearing a digital watch on that album cover? or just a really ugly watch?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

i could drink a billion thai iced coffees today, if anyone is interested.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

mmmm. i like thai iced tea too. do you know what sort of tea that is? i've always wondered. i want to make thai iced tea iced cream. it shouldn't be that hard...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Thai iced tea ice cream would be amazing. Other ice cream flavors in a similar vein that I enjoy are green tea ice cream and red bean ice cream.

I could eat a billion scoops of Thai iced tea ice cream.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i have no idea. i think the condensed milk is key though.
you're spot on about the ice cream flavor!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

did i say "iced cream"? how antiquated i am.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

i'm ready to try this whenever you are, ladies. i have had some success with the ice cream-making in the past...if we could just figure out what sort of tea it is, i bet it could happen. and we could all eat tons of it.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

It's funny, tho, that the spelling "iced tea" has lingered while "iced cream" is hopelessly old-fashioned.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Maybe after we partake of the iced cream, we can all take a ride in my horseless carriage.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Back in your day, a nickle would get you a talkie, a steak and kidney pie, a cup of coffee, and a dish of iced cream with enough change left over to catch a street car back to your cold water flat.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Recipe #1: http://www.blueray.com/thaitea/recipes.html

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

i know why that is, actually. when you say "iced tea" the /d/ phoneme carries over to the /t/ of tea. making Ice T a possibility for a cool rapper name.

iced cream, however, has two different phonemes. /t/ at the end of iced and /k/ at the beginning of cream. so they don't mix well and one gets dropped.

the end.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Or pre-fab, which I would imagine would be better for making ice cream since you probably need a lot of it, right? I don't know how to make ice cream or even iced cream so I'm just guessing: http://importfood.com/thaiicetea.html

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

i've been eager to make my own soy ice/d cream, since ice/d cream often gives me a stomach ache (if i eat too much of it, which i am prone to do. i mean, it's right there! and it's good!). or homemade sorbet. i had lemon sorbet last night & it made me want to make my own but more tart than sweet.

xpost to amanda: for that, i'm sure jaymc has developed a large linguistic crush on you.

you could also probably find it in any of the asian grocery stores around argyle . . . maybe it won't be clearly labeled in english, but what's a little thai iced tea without experimentation?

i have! i have! she hasn't supplanted erin mckean yet, tho.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

did someone say linguistics? because i love linguistics. almost done with the old master's degree, in fact. i have two more classes to take. whoo! my specialty is pedagogical phonetics. (this is where the conversation usually dies.)

as for the recon mission, i have looked at some of the argyle-area shops for thai iced tea (bulk, bags, whatever) and haven't found it, but i haven't looked in ALL of them.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

um, i have absolutely nothing on erin mckean. she's a goddess.

hubba hubba

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

what is pedagogical phonetics? in a nutshell. google turned up very little.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

teaching proper pronunciation - it's a fringe of ESL teaching.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

compared to the shining beacon of perfection known as erin mckean, my knowledge is equivalent to that of a cartoon mouse.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

haha, i'm sure you are very capable.

isn't "proper" sort of up for debate? prescriptive v. descriptive, etc.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

certainly. i aim for intelligibility and ease of communication.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh my, this thread has taken a turn for the worse. The beacon chick is cute though.

Can't we talk about tetris? Sometimes I'm oddly satisfied by rotating the square despite that it doesn't offer any advantage.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

(xpost sorry jeff) how does pedagogical phonetics intersect with speech therapy?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

i was going to ask a similar question!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

i think erin mckean lives in ravenswood manor. i once started to write a short story about her, entitled "the lexicographer," but didn't make it past the first paragraph.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

That's a short story, all right.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

very similar, but less medical. it probably has more in common with accent coaching, with actors and stuff. recognizing phonetic patterns, etc.

i told you this was a conversation killer!!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

(xp) i don't think i'm cut out for fiction.

(xp) i don't think i'm cut out for fiction.

Have you tried you hand at Erin McKean slash?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

(Sorry. I'm verging on inappropriate again.)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

i don't even know what that means. what does that mean?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

It's a kind of erotic fiction that involves celebrities. The origin of "slash" comes from homoerotic Star Trek stories that involved Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock, and which were thus termed "Kirk/Spock."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Or, ahem, so I hear.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Wikipedia has my back: Slash fiction is fan fiction, describing gay pairings between media characters, often in explicit detail, and very frequently outside the canon of the source. The name arises from the use of the slash character in phrases such as 'Kirk/Spock' to describe the stories. ('Kirk/Spock' is widely thought to be the first type of slash fiction, first appearing in the 1970s in Star Trek fanzines.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

and here i was thinking that you learned about it from a "friend" . . . how silly of me.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

ooooh. ok. i figured as much. does it have to be gay? because young terence stamp is really hot.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I am also essentially incapable of writing fiction. I took a couple of shots at NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and the results were pretty dismal.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I don't think I realized it had to be gay.

Terence Stamp at any age is hot!

Why would anyone be so stupid? Would he rather get sued later than pay up now?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

i recommend the portable tetris games you can get at target for about $10 -- the batteries last forever and they save your games for later, if you get interrupted. we've had one for 3 years and it still works.

(also, i see we've successfully moved away from phonetics. good job team.)

i feel blinded and pacified by the beauty of terence stamp.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Terence Stamp gives me a little bit of the creeps.

To Paunchster - Yes. The IDOL isn't the most robust organization so it's less likely that he'll be sued and more likely that the IDOL will say, "Hey, you owe this guy money!" and then he will go "Okay whatever." And then we'll have to get an attorney to try and enforce the judgment and then the boss will close his warehouse and reopen under a different name and never have to pay anybody anything.

Sorry. It's dismal, but that's US labor and employment law for you.

I miss FDR.

I think the Tribune is the only one reporting two, and that's because not all the facts were in. I just wrote Theresa and she said she had heard about it from Shannon in Greenlight, who had received an e-mail from Emily in the Dials.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Well Tim from SKWM is posting on the Electic Audio thread so I think that's probably more reliable at this point.

I think I need to do something to distract myself. Any suggestions? Other than doing work?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Read the Great Watch Debate. I'm amusing myself hugely.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

between this thread & liz, i don't really want to crawl out of my bed ever again.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

You're in bed right now? Lucky.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry for bringing everyone down. I want this to be a fun weekend.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Somehow, listening to Billie Holiday isn't helping. Imagine.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

no. i'm not in bed. it just sounded better than "i never want to crawl out of my office again" because, well, i'd really like to be out of here. if you can imagine that!
that dumbass guy is, um, an ass.
maybe he has a watch crammed up there.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

between this, liz and my mother in law, i feel compelled to live as much as i can before i die. because clearly, that can happen at any moment. better make the best of this while i have it...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

i'm an optimist.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Yes manda. I should quit my fucking job right now. What a waste of time.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

that dumbass guy is, um, an ass.

Yeah, but I did make it sould like I go around judging people based on thier watches, which I can't be bothered to do. I just like nice watches.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

i am too, actually. i wouldn't ever *really* stay in bed all day.

reading liz's thread also really makes me want to write letters to all my friends & family (even ILXors!) telling them that i love them so much, and include specific details that i cherish about them.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

well, all i'm saying is that since all of these people are dying in these horrific, sudden ways, we owe it to them to have fun in their honor. i don't mean that flippantly...i just mean that there are lives to be lived and we are fortunate enough to be able to live them.

(end inspirational speech)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

sure, kenan. it may have sounded like that . . . but dumbass could've brought up that point in a less aggressive way AND if they lurk around here at all then they might actually know you well enough to know that you're NOT that guy.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Don't quit today, Nick. It's Friday afternoon! Maybe you'll feel better Monday.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I suggest we pour out some of our forties this weekend for all our lost pals, and then celebrate life.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I have Monday off, so I'll DEFINITELY feel better on Monday. And I'm not really going to quit, too much of a wuss/too poor.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

yeah, and nick, i have yo' resume and will dutifully pimp you out on monday -- be patient!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I know. This has been a weird week at work because my boss has been out all week so I have done next to nothing, which is kind of fun but also I end up feeling useless and spent at the end of the day, I guess from being totally unproductive.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I guess it's like eating a whole lot of birthday cake and then feeling sick.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I suggest we pour out some of our forties this weekend for all our lost pals, and then celebrate life.

Ok, but can we not drink forties and just say we did?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

IT MUST BE FORTIES

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

yes. yes it is. i'm that way with twizzlers.

in other news, i look forward to meeting all of you in person. for some reason I'm nervous. but I get nervous about everything.

ps -- kenan, watch snob AND beer snob? (heheh)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

70mph???? on dempster. jesus christ.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

At least the meeting will be on neutral ground. The first time I met N,S,K,A,J, it was at nick's house. I was a wreck for months afterwards.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

did you stutter? i'm afraid of stuttering.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

HA ha. Our apartment is so intimidating that way.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I just didn't talk that much.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

i picture your apartment looking not unlike the mid-evil room.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

watch snob AND beer snob?

No no no! I was thinking PBR tallboys. Or maybe some Lone Star, because it makes me think of home.

i picture your apartment looking not unlike the mid-evil room.

Only with WAY more shackles. And some kinda rope/pulley system that I've never been able to make sense of.

i'm annoyed that i'm not going to meet you yet, amanda!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

nick: you are awesome.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

And I think the first time that I met Kelsey that I wasn't slurring and drunk was when I interviewed at her office. In fact that might have been the only time.

I'm still yet to have a coherent conversation with leaf, usually because I can't string words together very well when I've been drinking.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

It was hard to type that. I had to think.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

i have the first season of TP on dvd if anyone wants a marathon? eh? eh? eh? is the second one ever coming out?

kelsey - maybe i'll see you at the next karaoke function? which reminds me...is it too soon for another one?

maybe in a couple of weeks?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

jeff, really? that's awesome.

i guess i know you & jenny mostly online. i've yet to actually hang out with nick & sarah, too.

but i can put faces with names!!

after the end of this month i'll probably be lonely & sad b/c leaf is moving to minneapolis, so i'm more likely to crawl out of my hermit den & actually socialize.

i've heard that one before.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

i've yet to actually hang out with nick & sarah, too.

what? nonsense. you hung out with them at the wedding. and that one time we went to lava lounge with leeeeee. and at squeezed. and at fake fictions/nueva cats shows. et cetera.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Theoretical Chicago ILX events that have yet to take place:
1. More karaoke
2. Bowling
3. Chicago FAP Band Experience
4. Next meeting of BARN (Bicyclists Against Rollerblading Nazis)
5. Something Sarah, Kenan, jaymc, and I were talking about a couple of weeks ago that I can't remember now
6. The n/a & jaymc DJ collective
We are basically big teases.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

7. Graveyard tour and FAP

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

well, okay, jaymc. but i guess they don't count as much as i'd like them to.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Is leeeee still in Chicago?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

but if the stars align, maybe we can manage to show up at the same place and time tomorrow? that will be interesting. i'm going to bring an umbrella for sun protection. is that too goth?

i just hate sunburn.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

plus that thing at the lava lounge . . . i felt weird. all awkward & stuff. plus, leaf was crabby & annoying.
by the way: if anyone wants to come to his going away thing, you're all more than welcome to.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Is leeeee still in Chicago?

He's back in San Jose for the summer, I believe.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Actually, it might have been a one-year program?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Forecast for tomorrow has been changed to mostly cloudy and 88, instead of sunny and 92. So hopefully no one will leave all dehydrated and ouchy.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Lava Lounge was fun, but there were a looooot of people there, including many that didn't really know most of the others. Which made it a little awkward.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

That was the night Jeff introduced Jessa to his deviant whiskey-swilling ways, and she just slumped into Nick's couch. She was fine the next day, though. She's just a lightweight.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Karaoke! I can make that happen, watch:

We will be going out for karaoke at the Hidden Cove Friday, July 29* at 8 PM. BE THERE.

*Sat. July 30 if there is too much conflict for Saturday.

PS I am bringing my sun hat so no, I think an umbrella is not too goth at all. Rather practical, really.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Too much conflict for Friday, I mean.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

fuck! i'm helping leaf move that weekend!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

well done jenny. i'm in. unless i have to go back to iowa...that's a possibility.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

i'm way, way too happy about tomorrow's weather forecast. now if they'd just lower it for sunday . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I suggest one of these.

http://www.kidzworld.com/img/upload/article/a1467i1_UmbrellaHat_w.jpg

Not only will you not get burned, but you'll be a festival attraction all by yourself.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

3. Chicago FAP Band Experience

This mustn't not happen.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

I think it's better as a concept than in practice.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

July 30 is better for me for karaoke. I might be going to a Brewers game in Milwaukee with Haikunym on the 29th. But don't let that stop you.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

hey are we attempting to meet up tomorrow, sunday or both?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Can't decide if he wants to drink beer or climb a telephone pole.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

I'll meet up with anyone, anytime. I'm less interested in the bands tomorrow, so I'll probably be more into talking and stuff, but whatever.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Ditto.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm most excited about Broken Social scene tomorrow. Never seen 'em.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm looking forward to seeing tortoise in the twilight. i think it will be a suitable time of day to see them. i can put my umbrella (hat) away and relax.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

maybe even loosen your beer belt a notch . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm most excited about LES SAVY FAV because they are one of my favorite live bands and they're basically broken up now so it'll be good to see them at least one last time. Second most excited about DEERHOOF because they are pretty awesome too.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

my unitard doesn't have pockets. i have to wear the belt.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

bye all! see all/most of you tomorrow at leaf's/the after party!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

It will be my 6th time seeing LSF. I"M HARDCORE FAN.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 July 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Okay, since Kelsey is helping Leaf move the 29/30 and jaymc might not be able to make it let's say then instead:

KARAOKE!!! Friday!!! August 5th!!! Hidden Cove!!! 8 PM!!!

With Saturday, August 6th as the alternadate. Because I would really like Kelsey to go and she mentioned upthread wanting to go out more after Leaf moves.

Amanda, and any others, I'm still 100% ready to go out for regular drinking the weekend of the 29/30 provided you still like me after this weekend. I've got A LOT of fun to pack in between now and when stupid dumb stupid school starts on August 22 so let it be known that I am hereby ready for anything any time.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 15 July 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

AUGUST 5TH AWESOME I WILL BE THERE WITH BELLZ ON

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 16 July 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, and any others, I'm still 100% ready to go out for regular drinking the weekend of the 29/30 provided you still like me after this weekend.

I will be in town that weekend!

I'm kinda unavailable both nights because my band is playing at the Green Mill, but I would love to get together earlier if possible.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 16 July 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I too will be in town the weekend of the 29/30, it turns out.

jadrenos (jadrenos), Saturday, 16 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

weekend of aug. 5 is good for karaoke for me. actually, pretty much any weekend is equally good and bad.

anyway, i'm all ready to go today. i'm wearing a blue top and a brown-blue-pink flowered skirt. i will be completely indistinguishable from every other young lady who thought it appropriate to wear a skirt and tank top today. as it turns out, i'm not going to be able to show up until about 4:30, so hopefully we can all meet up after that.

pardon me for being verbose. i just drank a ton of coffee.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Me from bottom to top: black Chucks. Khakhi shorts. Sky blue shirt (with a Fake Fictioons original design on it... John termed it "Sarah's Guernica")... thick black hipster glasses, spikey hair.

Look for me.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

What time will you be there? I'm gonns show up around 1:30-2.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

I can find you. I always seem to run into you.

We're going to be there around 3ish maybe?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

'k. I'm going to try to sneak stuff in that I'm not supposed to.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I'll be showing up with my people 'round 3ish. I have short hair. No idea what I'll be wearing.

giboyeux (skowly), Saturday, 16 July 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm wearing bright red panties. No, I mean shirt.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 16 July 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Hi guys.

I just cried my eyes out listening to Chicago Public Radio. Short stories by Tobias Wolff. So so good. I'm a snotty mess.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I love you all, and I don't want to get sick and die, but I know I will.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

i should listen to npr more. i got out of the habit, and now i don't know when the interesting stuff is on, anymore.

not that i need to be a snotty mess, but short stories are cool.

juliaaa, Monday, 18 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

The story that got me was called "The Liar" and is in this book.

The ending is great, as all short story endings must be for them to even be called a short story. The bus has broken down, it's raining, and people are bored and asking him questions. He makes up fantastical lies about growing up in Tibet, and speaks made-up Chinese to them. And they sit back, eyes closed, listening to "what surely is an ancient and holy tongue."

But it's not just that. It's really about his parents. It's so beautiful.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

hi everybody. did you get my note? i went to talk to my friend kate and when i looked for you, several thousand people had eaten you all up. so i went home around 7:45.

and then this morning i forgot about my dentist's appointment and he called me to ask where i was. i didn't even have time to get nervous and freaked out like i normally do, i just sat there while he listened to wings and talked about the humidity. eeeek.

did i miss anything exciting?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

i just remembered that the nick and sarah took the day off. did everyone take the day off? i wish i had. i'm pooped.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm taking the day off, too. No reason, really. Just hate my job.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

i did enjoy meeting you-all though. seriously.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

i also boorishly forgot to introduce sarah when she came over. i hope that's not going on my permanent record.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

btw, amanda, it was nice meeting you!

and giboyeux, i wish i had been able to say more than hi from across a crowded blanket.

everyone else who i already know, you are great.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

No, dude, you are great.

I didn't smoke anything but I inhaled enough dirt that my chest feels kind of heavy and rattle-y today.

I made coffee but it's so hot that I don't want to drink it now. Gah.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I wish I would have taken the day off, even if I didn't go to a rock festival over the weekend.

However, my girlfriend and I were driving to the monthly staff meeting this morning (which takes place on the other side of town from our offices, go figure), and we spontaneously ditched and hung out in the park for a few hours instead!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Do you and your gf work at the same place?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

If anyone finds any photos online of Tim Harrington wallowing in the dirt, please post them. I couldn't see what he was doing.

Yeah John, we actually both work for Ep1c Syst3ms, who make software for hospitals. Different buildings and different jobs though.

who is that girl?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

She's a great girl. She made me move my refrigerator. Just trust me, she rocks.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Jordan - I'd definitely be up for meeting up early this Saturday. Were you thinking of meeting at the Green Mill like last time?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

she looks familiar . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Her name is Robin and she's a friend of ours from NC who moved up here probably around January I think? I used to work with her, along with my friends Jesse and Sayjal whom I am not sure if you've met, at Greensboro's answer to fine dining. She's been out and about with the gang before. Oh she was at our reception! You probably saw her there.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

come to think of it, i thought that sayjal looked familiar to me too. could i have known her from NC?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Cool! The Green Mill would be easy for me but I'm up for anywhere, as long as I can get there somehow and get back in time for the gig. I'll have the whole day free, I assume.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

not to be weird, but you looked familiar, too, when i met you, amanda. maybe we have crossed paths somewhere?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Ok. Here's something.

Nick + Sarah = luuuv.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

oooh, those are great photos. so cute. nick and sarah look extremely wholesome in that first one. that guy's name is pat.

j - i look familiar? hmmm. i can't really explain that.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

The unnamed dude is my friend Pat.

Yeah, I dunno, Amanda! Maybe you look like someone else?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Dude, she looks like someone hott. You WISH you knew other people who look like her.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

j- i dunno. did you have something to do with the 2004 chicago documentary film festival?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

i look like cassius clay.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

john! your face is hilarious!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Is Jeff sleep-dialing in that photo?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

He kind of looks like he's crooning into the phone. And boy is he ever going to kill Kenan when he sees that he posted that picture...

Jordan, I'll probably have to do some work on Saturday day but will definitely want to meet for pre-show fellowship at the Green Mill. What time are you starting? Who else will be meeting with us?

ohn! your face is hilarious!
-- kelsey (kelstarr...), July 18th, 2005. (kelstarry)

Ha! that's a funny thing to say to someone.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Also, I like that you caption a photo of me punching my fist into my palm in a vaguely threatening gesture by calling me pretty. PRETTY WHEN I KICK YOUR ASS.

Hilarious how?! Mark was right that my sideburns are awfully rectangular.

A: no, nothing to do with the doc film festival. Ah well.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

According to Centerstage, the Saturday gig starts at 8:00. I don't know who will be meeting up, but the more the merrier!

What does that sign say in the background of the picture with jaymc?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Chicago Children Museum
Vinyl Art Workshop For KIDS!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Jordan I just realized that you are talking about two weeks away, not next weekend. Okay, ignore my compulsive over-planning. We can discuss it again as the weekend gets closer.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Vinyl Art Workshop For KIDS!

I still can't figure out why it was for kids.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I'm picturing making art out of pieces of shattered Sergio Mendes records.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

At least there is one pretty one in our marriage. Kenan will live...for now.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

*bows respectfully*

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I think the vinyl art workshop was like a design-your-own-album thing, where they give you an old vinyl record and sleeve, and you decorate it, paste new things on top of it, etc.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

that vinyl art thing was actually for the bored middle-aged parents of the kids who were too young to go by themselves and old enough to want to go.

Since Nick and Sarah aren't here to keep the conversation alive, here's a question:

what concerts/shows did your parents take you to (before the age of 12)?

Mine took me to:
1) Eurythmics/Howard Jones (1982),
2) so many Chicago shows I can't count (free tickets, i think)
3) Bruce Springsteen, Tunnel of Love tour (1987) I was 12 and he was the embodiment of masculinity
4) Kenny Rogers (met him! he's foxy.) and
5) Billy Joel (right around the time of "uptown girl")
6) Peter, Paul and Mary (I think I was 10 and I had to struggle to hide the fact that i was blubbering during "blowin' in the wind")

those are the ones i remember.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Like this!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

that's right -- kenny rogers is foxy. not as foxy as charlie rich, but charlie rich didn't give me a warm hug, so my heart belongs to kenny.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I met sting once, for about three seconds.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

I had gay thoughts.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

My parents didn't take me to many concerts when I was a kid. Part of that was because we lived really far away from anything good. Part of that was that my mom, who for half of my life under the age of 12, was my primary parent and she was a working single mom and in addition to not having a lot of interest in live music, didn't have the time or money for it either.

BUT my first concert, with my dad, was SHA-NA-NA and my second, also with my dad, was the Statler Brothers.

I got to go with my friend Dawn and her grandmother to see Air Supply at the Delaware State Fair when I was in third grade (or thereabouts... young enough to think that my blue shirt with the giant giraffe on it was the hottest thing possible to wear to an Air Supply concert) and then I was probably about 13 when I went with Dawn and her grandmother to see Mr. Mister at the Delaware State Fair.

My next concert after that was REM on the Green tour, unchaperoned! Although my boyfriend's dad did drop us off and pick us up.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

6) Peter, Paul and Mary

ha! me too. that's the only concert i've ever known my parents to attend, actually.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

jenny, you had a boyfriend at 13?
only pretty girls have boyfriends during their awkward years!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

The childhood concerts I remember are:

1) Stevie Wonder (awesome)
2) Village People (I danced)
3) M.C. Hammer (at my behest, of course)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I never went to see any concerts with my parents! Not that I can remember. Well, maybe a few jazz or classical concerts, like Janice Borla at the College of DuPage or the Harlem Boys Choir at North Central College. But nothing notable.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Apart from county fairs and village jubilees (where I might've caught the Buckinghams for a few minutes), the first rock/pop band I ever saw live was Brainiac, at Lollapalooza '95.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

If I recall correctly, my first concert was Jimmy Buffett, at Astroworld in Houston. Or maybe it was the Beach Boys, sans Brian Wilson. One of the two.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

No, I saw REM when I was 16. And I liked Sha-na-an an awful lot, too.

Wow, Brainiac! That's an awesome first concert.

WOOOOO! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

the first concert i went to because i was old enough to beg was INXS with my mom and three friends. we bought t-shirts and screeeeeeeamed. my mom hid behind a tree. for real.

i think the reason i asked this is that there are going to be kids someday who say that their parents took them to see deerhoof and that they were really hot and bored.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Deerhoof is a terrible goddamn band name.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

It would be awesome to cross a finger monkey with Craig Finn and then I could have a little pocket indie rock monkey to carry around and entertain me with clever observations about the drug scene in midwestern cities.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

xpost Great band, though. Go figure.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

jenny, let's get on that, because i want one too.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

What is wrong with Deerhoof as a band name? I guess I've never really thought about it.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. Makes me think of... a hoof. Of a deer. Surely that's a dirty, unpleasant thing.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I just think of it like all the other wilderness-related band names these days, like Caribou and Wolf Eyes and Panthers and Pelican and (you see what I mean).

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

i think deerhooves are cute. they're like nature's shoes.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

john: hilarious because you look whimsically intrigued with whatever it is you're looking at. it's all about the eyes & those rosebud lips.

first concerts: natalie cole, elton john & the beach boys. not at the same time, obviously.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

i was nicer to john that that! although, we didn't live together, which probably made things easier.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to mention how I'm living in Wilmington, NC and working three (or more) jobs so I can make 12 gees a year. I am going through a revival of 1997 phase, where i listen to lots of salsa and Lomax field recordings and pretend i'm in college again.

mostly i'm waiting for dan to be done with his movie so we can get the hell out of wilmington.

not a bad time, not a good time. mostly blah.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

(snapped out of our reverie)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 18 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

I think I am. I remember hanging out with Nicolas Z. and Ben Sp!ker and being sad when Ben and Lauren moved because I didn't really feel I had an established network of friends in Chicago yet. I mean, I did and I didn't.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

i was nicer to john that that!

Almost everyone is nicer to almost everyone else than that. Oh! And then when I started telling people about what she did, she started making up terrible stories about me to retaliate. Spreading vicious rumours, just completely made-up stories. MY GOD what a terrible person.

Noit that I'm still bitter. Oh, ok, I am still bitter. I hope she dies alone.

Yeah, my life is a thousand times better now.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

more satisfied? definitely. i like chicago a lot better than wilmington. i'm still wearing the same clothes though.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

i think i was more able to enjoy my own company in 2001. no, that's not what i mean.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

If I'd been at home during this flashback trip, I'd have posted a journal entry. I'm curious now.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I am definitley more satisfied with my life right now, by orders of magnitude. Although I do recognize that I wouldn't be as happy and content as I am now if I hadn't gone through all the junk that I went through starting around June of 2001.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

i don't think i'm wearing many of my 2001 clothes anymore . . . i'm probably chunkier than i was then.
i think i can speak for john & i both in saying that we're happier.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

amen jenny. although sometimes i wonder if the current lack of adversity in my life right now is what's boring me. that sounds unhealthy.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

well, now that i think about it, something extraordinarily shitty just happened, so i guess that's not really true. never mind. plenty of adversity, thankyouverymuch.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm definitely not wearing the same clothes, since part of my early millennial challenges included being monstrously fat.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

you are in NO WAY monstrously fat.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

(hi! I'm at work right now! I'm probably breaking the rules by posting this!)

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

No, not now. I'm technically overweight and I'm a few pounds heavier than I'd like to be but definitely not monstrously fat (although I feel that way sometimes right before my period). June 2001 was a whole different story though - about 80 pounds heavier than I am now!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

...and you guys are talking about wearing the same clothes like it's a good thing. i don't think so at all. i need to associate certain clothes with certain stages, and if all of those clothes are the same, there's no change. and it's always 1997.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

congrats on losing that much weight!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Did you get stuck on the red line? Jesse called from State/Lake and said they closed down the red line because of another damn bomb threat.

I'm still at work. It's lonely being the only Chicago ILXor with an evening shift!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 18 July 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

My train was packed, i guess I left DePaul at around 6. Although I'm excellent at finding a seat in a crowded train, and I was seated by Grand.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

I went to the Jackson stop, was ushered out without an explanation and hustled onto a bus. The driver told me he would take me to Wilson, which is where I had to stop before I went home, to do something at Truman. Then five minutes later he says that he's only going to Belmont. Grrr. So I got onto a red line train up on the brown line tracks at whatever intersection that is that has all of the jewelry stores. Wabash and whatever. I slept on and off and eavesdropped on some chatty people behind me while pretending to read. They talked in detail about the first time they ever got drunk, so it was pretty interesting. Then a red line train pulls up on the regular red line tracks, so I hopped over there, thinking that I was on the wrong train. I was confused and sleepy. Two hours after I left work, I arrived home. Now I'm working on my lesson for tomorrow and the crossword puzzle I tried to make online disappeared.

Agggggggggggggh. And that's the electrifying conclusion to my boring story.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

So was there a bomb or not? Who knows.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Transcription of Jesse's story: Jesse said he was at Roosevelt and the CTA people told him that the station was closed and the whole red line was closed and there were cops everywhere including this dark haired cop with polyester cop pants that were so tight you could totally see his penis and Jesse got on the bus and there were thousands of people on the street and he rode the bus to Grand from Roosevelt and tried getting on the subway and just as he walked up they reopened it and he asked the officer what happened and he told him, "Dog smelled a bomb" and Jesse said, "There was actually a bomb on the train?" and the cop said, "Yeah there was a bomb on the train at Roosevelt" and a second guy asked the same question and got the same response and then the train ran express to Loyola. And Jesse went to the local ABC affiliate's website and there was no bomb on the train.

THE END

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

It's the variety show thing hosted by jaymc. It's at the Beat Kitchen tonight. Hmmm.

Sadly I probably won't be on ILX as much this week as my boss will be here and I have fucking data entry to do.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Me neither, as I have just started a new job and can't look like I'm slacking already. On the other hand, I got here EARLY today.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

I am trying to get "in the zone." In the data-entry zone, that is. Where it won't matter that I feel sick because I'll be on autopilot.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

My thoughts about the pix posted of me upthread (because I'm sure you've all been holding your breath in anticipation) are:
1- I am really really skinny for the first time in a very long time. In fact, I think I need to drink more milk shakes.
2- I have the ugliest head in the universe.

In better news, I had a great weekend, minus the throwing up part. Also, yesterday was really nice. I lounged around, did laundry, played bass, and got paid for it!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I've been horribly depressed all weekend. Well, since Saturday. In that whole "My life has no purpose, and I can't see why I should go on" mood. I have to find another job, but even that's going to be a big problem. How will I get out of work for interviews? I took the day off yesterday, and it was like the biggest deal ever. My boss gave me a speech this morning about how my absence yesterday was "Hurtful." (He's such a drama queen.) What's especially ridiculous about this is that we're ahead in all our work. We've completed more of the magazine than we ever have in this amount of time.

Here's an idea: if I'm so important that I can't take a single Monday off without causing coronoaries, how about you pay me an actual adult salary?

Anyway, I think once I do score some kind of interview or another, I'm going to tell them the truth. Give an extreme amount of notice, and then tell them straight up when I have job interviews. That's horrifying and dangerous, but what can I do? I can't be "sick" once a week.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Do it, maybe their attitude will change.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

sarah -- you have a most beautiful head. it's very clean-looking. clean and fresh. fresh and clean.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

as for the employers, kenan: write a quick cover letter and i'll send your resume to our HR people. you sent it to me last week, right? you were supposed to remind me to remind you, but i remembered.

also, look here:
http://classifiedventures.com/tomcat_hr/cv_job_listings.jsp to see if there are other jobs you might want to apply for.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Ok. Will do.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

sarah -- you have a most beautiful head. it's very clean-looking. clean and fresh. fresh and clean.

ain't nobody dope as sarah.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Jaymc has advised me that I'm transparently over-nostalgic about Chicago and should probably just move my ass back already, so my ass and I have scheduled talks on the matter. It was decided during the drive that moving to Chicago is the new moving to New York, so it'd make sense, kinda.

It was terrific seeing all of you I saw, and I wish I'd had a chance to actually hang out -- trying to combine festival-seeing with old-Chicago-friends catch-up made it hard to spend any quality time anywhere, so I'll be looking forward to a calmer visit sometime soon. Still, though: great seeing you all, great to see that N+S are somehow even cuter in person, great chatting with everyone, and I hope Jessa wasn't too weirded out by my casually saying hi as if we'd somehow met before -- occupational internet hazard. Keep on keeping on and such, and I totally want one of those "Sarah's Guernica" Fictions t-shirts.

See you all again soon, I hope.

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

(Actually I guess Nick doesn't look "cuter" in person -- he looks less-cute, in the good way. Like suddenly all cool and scrappy, or something.)

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I totally want one of those "Sarah's Guernica" Fictions t-shirts.

Did you come up with that on your own? Or did someone else say that? Because that's totally how I described it, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I didn't meet nabisco. And I was asking about you ALL weekend, just ask jaymc.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

haha I'm sure she was okay with it. She did seem to worry that other ILXors would see her with her friend Mike and think she was out on some surreptitious date. That's just Mike. Sparky, we call him. He's cool. A cool anesthesiologist.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Did you come up with that on your own? Or did someone else say that?

I think I said it, being careful to attribute it to you.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I don't care about that, just wondered if it was a coincidence!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Admittedly, Sarah's version has significantly less dismemberment.

http://college-de-vevey.vd.ch/auteur/Picasso/guernica-init.jpg

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Sarah, I think you are stunning. You and your head.

Listen, is anyone else getting something that isn't google when they go to google or does my precious, adorable virus-proof PowerBook have some sort of virus?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

google worked for me...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

are you sure you didn't type "giggle.com" accidentally?

teehee

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

xpost: Noooooooooooo!

I don't even know what to do about that. That's how utterly unused to the virus/spyware issue I am.

It's google and I get "SoGo" and I can't even google "SoGo" to see what it is because, well, google is something else now.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I get Google. You have a mac virus? There's a first.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Hey will one of you who have google search for "SoGo" and see what the fuck that is?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

It's a dns issue, not spyware.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

You may want to try repairing your disk permissions. Just do a help search for "disk utility" and it will offer to open the disk utility for you.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Jenny, this looks relevant: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000610042620/

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I think I've figured out why loads of Google users were directed to "SoGoSearch". Whenever you type in a URL in most browsers and the URL is incorrect, for example, you type in example.com, but there is no example.com, it automatically looks for example.whatever. Well, SoGoSearch has the domain http://www.google.com.net/. While Google was unavaibile, users' browsers looked for alternate websites that started with "www.google" and directed them to http://www.google.com.net/. It's that simple.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea if that's actually true, but it sounds plausible.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it certainly doesn't redirect there now.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

AH! Excellent. I officially have ceased worrying. Thank you all for the groovy sleuth work.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

hey nick -- did anyone call/email you about an interview yet? i just heard some news...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh noes, I am getting sick. I feel weak. All my partying has caught up with me, finally.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

i'm really glad that since jenny isn't at school she's here a lot more often.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

jaymc -- you need some spinach. i'm coming to believe that spinach consumption is directly correlated with health. eat tons of it! put it in everything!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

popeye knew that.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

xpost: I'm glad, too. I feel like I'm really getting to know a bunch of cool people that I've admired from afar for about a year.

jaymc, drink lots of water! I have some of those awesomely necessary Emergen-C packets... I wish I could beam you one right now. They are the jam when it comes to relieving party fatigue. Also, I agree with Amanda re: spinach.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Do you think this will do until I can get some proper spinach?

http://www.homegrocer.com/images/products/naked-GreenMachine.gif

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

it'll help...just eat a big spinach salad, tons of water and if you can swing it, i think that echinacea tea really helps to ward off illness too. i make a huge pot of it and then ice it.

boy, i sound like someone's mother.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I actually just made some rooibos tea that contains SGS (not the ILX poster), which is found in broccoli and which "promote long-lasting antioxidant and essential cellular processes inactivating free radicals." Whatever that means. But it sounds good, right?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah -- i like to mix the echinacea tea with the orange rooibos (from t-j's) to make it taste better. it makes super iced tea.

you'll be fine in a few days.

also a lifesaver: excedrin migraine. it has caffeine in it. i love it.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

all excederin has caffeine, i think.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I didn't meet nabisco, but I SAW him on Sunday. I think. Did you have sweet boots on, nabisco, and a grey-ish black t-shirt?

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

all excederin has caffeine, i think.

Which my little body can't handle, anyway.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

"little"

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

oh. ok. my little brain loves caffeine. i don't really have any other vices. never mind. stick with the spinach and water and herbal tea. it's better for you anyway.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

(xpost I mean, you all saw my ass on that Flickr photo, right?)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

My brain loves caffeine, but my body doesn't. Not anymore.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I recently got totally off the coffee. It was hard. And I'd be hard-pressed to say I feel better. Why couldn't I give up smoking instead?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

I gave up the smoking a good while ago, but I don't plan to ever give up the coffee. It just seems so much more insignificant than the other things I could be doing. Plus, to think that I wouldn't have that option any more would really depress me.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

That sounds about right, G: little brown boots completely covered in Out Hud dust, torn-up jeans, and a blue-black Adult. t-shirt that I wore specifically to see if anyone would rag on me about it. Too bad, I'd have liked to say hi!

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Spinach must be really popular in Chicago these days...when I get to the produce section, it's all picked over.

Actually, I switched to other greens like the less mediagenic bok choy.

crown victoria (dymaxia), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I like to keep bags of frozen chopped spinach, kale, or collard greens on hand to throw in with soups or whatever. You can't really taste them (which is good because I really hate spinach) but they add vitamins and fiber and good-for-you bulk to what you're eating.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

yeah, greens in soup go down eeeeeeasy.

i tried mustard greens for a while until one time when i REALLY screwed it up and it tasted like dung. i'm not sure what i did wrong, but i think it involved cayenne pepper and lemon juice.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

whenever i think of bok choy i think of this facts of life episode where jo is eating bok choy and has to defend herself by screaming "it's chinese cabbage!" at blair. maybe it was natalie eating it. i can't remember. someone was eating bok choy.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Man oh man. Greens. Grilled escarole and white beans.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

i love kale and/or collard greens cooked up (steamed or lightly sauteed) with a pinch of toasted sesame oil & freshly toasted sesame seeds sprinkled on top. i could eat that all day long.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

i have so much stuff i need to do that i honestly can't figure out what i should be doing right at this minute. work? schoolwork? emailing my neglected friends? calling my parents? talking to my advisor (school advisor, not psychic friend) about my questionable future? definitely not posting this. but i have so. much. stuff to do. it's making me sick.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

hey, too bad i didnt get to see any of you this weekend. sunday was fun, and the afterparty in our jacuzzi suite was way fun - though none of us got to make out with anyone except my 19 year old intern... sucks.

anyhow, if anyone is around, im going to Rodan tonight for a blacklist magazine release party, or something. so swing by if youre bored! or call me.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

amanda: I am emailing back and forth with someone trying to figure out a time for a phone interview. This would have been easier last week when my boss wasn't here. But as she is here, I have to call when I'm not at work.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

i hate that phenomenon.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

OK, I'm talking to him tomorrow before work. He probably hates me now for making him go through all this rigamarole. I will have to stun him with my charm and intelligence.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Hey, dude -- you got an interview. Everything else can be figured out.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

jaymc: is there any chance you would be able to burn me some fun cds before Squeezed tonight? I'm thinking Superpitcher and Out Hud.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

i heard that the HR people actually sent your resume over to the cars dot com people because they have a similar position open and they really liked your resume...i think it's a little different over there, but i hear that they make more money.

if you come in for an interview, tell me and we can get coffee/donuts at the krispy kreem that's IN THE BUILDING. yes, donuts, IN the building.

don't worry about being annoying -- they have to understand that people can't just blablabla about their job interviews at their current jobs.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

i used to do that pretty unashamedly at one temp job. nothing ever happened to me.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

BUt oh no! I wouldn't be working with yooooouuuu!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Tempin' ain't easy.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but we would be on the same floor and could meet in the kitchen for gossip anytime.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

did the person who made the interview appointment have a name?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Chr1stopher Skyl3s.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

ok. i don't know that person. it must be on the cars side. do you know when you're coming in?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Go n/a! It's your birthday!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

No, right now it's just a brief phone interview tomorrow.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

i just emailed you a photo of the aforementioned person, who is actually in HR. he looks very happy to be here.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

did you guys hear Pat's (of the above photo) story about temping? man, that was funny. he had to wear a giant spaceship-shaped tureen of coffee on his back and shoot out cups of coffee for college students. it was funnier when he told it.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

jaymc: is there any chance you would be able to burn me some fun cds before Squeezed tonight? I'm thinking Superpitcher and Out Hud.

Maaaaaaybe. Depends on when I get home. I'll try to burn at least one of them for you, if not both.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

That picture didn't work for some reason.

Anyways, I really AM going to make a fool of myself at Squeezed tonight.

xpost - I'll try and bring you a weird mix cd as an exchange.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

what happens at these variety shows? is there vicki lawrence/carol burnett wackiness? is it like hee-haw? because i loved hee-haw.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

I wish it was like Hee-Haw!

No, it's more like an open mic that's not really an open mic because people sign up in advance. I call it a variety show because a) I don't like the connotations of "open mic," and b) we really are open to people doing anything they want, as long as it's under 15 minutes. We've had magicians, filmmakers, clowns, performance poets, etc. Typically there's at least a couple of singer-songwriters, and there's one guy named Robert Buscemi who's sort of our house stand-up comic -- he performs nearly every month, and he's hilarious. Tonight we have a couple of improv groups, too. I sometimes read essays about music, but tonight I'm going to read old letters that people wrote me in high school. The theme tonight is "You've Got Mail."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

It's more like "Laugh-In" meets "The Twilight Zone."

Rob Buscemi RULEZ.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

jaymc: I am going to talk about music tonight. That's not the part where I make a fool of myself though. That's the other thing I'm going to do.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

jaymc: is there any chance you would be able to burn me some fun cds before Squeezed tonight? I'm thinking Superpitcher

dont forget to put that superpitcher/mfa remix!!!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

jaymc: i seriously thought about putting together some pieces of mail for you & spontaneously running on stage as you introduced each act.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I already have that...from the mix you made for me and Sarah! I was listening to it this morning. That song is incredible.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

I agree, open mic has that kind of "oh no it's that one guy who always reads really awful poetry about his camping trip in 10th grade where he was touched in a bad place" feel to it.
Also, Chicagoyins looking hawt at Intonation.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

What sort of things do you both usually do? Could I do some weird ass performance art where I cover myself in paper clips and then felliate myself?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

jaymc: i seriously thought about putting together some pieces of mail for you & spontaneously running on stage as you introduced each act.

DO IT DO IT!

DO IT DO IT!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

MAD LIBS

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

oh, that sounds like fun. i have class tonight, or else i would try to come.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

i'll think about it. it will lack that special "something" if i plan it too much. we'll see.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I will go to this.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

will you come bearing mail?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

cover myself in paper clips and then felliate myself

So that's why I can never find any paper clips...

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

You've got male.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

You're totally welcome to, giboyeux. It's only $5, it's usually fun, and if one of the acts sucks, they're only on stage for 15 minutes.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

(I make no claims for the greatness of anyone, aside from BUSCEMI.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

That one Squeezed where there were like 10 stand-up comedians for some reason was my favorite one I think. I also wish BLUEBERRY MCGREGOR would play again, she was great.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

she's in germany dude. i told her she should play out when she gets back.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I am a fan.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if my friend P4ul's improv group will be there....h'mmm. I will ask him!

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

What is your friend's improv group called? My pal s@yjal performs with an improv group, too.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I already have that...from the mix you made for me and Sarah! I was listening to it this morning. That song is incredible.

haha oh yeah, i forgot about that. i'm glad you like it, and actually listen to it!!

also, what time is jaymc's event? and until when?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Hey Amanda, I applied to two of those positions on the website, that on second though, I'm very qualifed for. I mentioned your name as a reference in the cover letters, let me know if there is anything else I need to do to make them love me.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

In other job news, I'm meeting with a recruiter on Thursday about a helpdesk job at a law firm. Hooray for chances slowly trickling in.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Jeff! You should email(handymanda at ameritech dot net) ME the cover letter and resume and I will submit them -- that way we can share the mighty "recruitment" bonus!

Oh, the things we'll buy with our recruitment bonuses. And when we all work in the same place, we can all gossip in the same kitchen. Like a real family. (Sigh)

in order to make them love you, appear very eager to work very hard.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Maybe you should try putting that paperclip/auto fellatio thing on your resume, or demonstrate during interviews.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

also, tell me what positions they are and i can email you a photo of who your boss would be, so you can see who you're interviewing with. are they with apartments or cars?

and make sure that you mention your affinity for paper clips and fellatio in your cover letter.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

haha. we agree. performance art + job interview = gold

i would do some interpretive dance right now, but i'm "supervising" computer hour for my class.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

cars.com

I'll forward my resume and cover letter now.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

that's good -- they pay better on the cars side. they also expect a little more out of their employees, but i'll tell you this:

our fridge is full of leftovers, sandwiches and yogurt. their fridge is practically empty. why? because they eat out virtually every day. because they can.

that's my take on it, at least.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

okay, forwarded.

Hey Jenny, what's for dinner? I'm hungry. I want Jin Ju.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Too late! I called you to see if you wanted to do something for dinner, then I got a burrito. Sorry!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

crap

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

My main communication is this board. What's a cell phone?

I just at the rest of a bag of frozen blueberries.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

I just got drunk, ate my girlfriend's chocolate cherry muffins, and watched The Dead Hate the Living!.

My stepmom sent my a job posting for some reason. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Press needs a new business manager, if anyone wants a job up here.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

My main communication is this board.

So, how's the other side of the room?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

smashing. I'm going to take the dvd back now, I'll see you in a few minutes. I also may grab some grub while out.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Isn't drinking on Tuesdays great?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

j+j call me tomorrow night if you're not too busy.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

I hate to force my sometimes mediocre pictures on you guys, but this one is kinda awesome.

That's not in black and white, either. That was the color of the morning.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

Good morning, Chicago!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Good morning, Kelsey.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

wow, what time of day was that? it was pretty nice when i went out at 6:30.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that was July 14, 8:30 am.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Skyscrapers make bleak mornings so much more impressive.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

jeff -- i've forwarded your resume/letter to the HR people. now you have to wait patiently and send good vibes, confident vibes out into the stratosphere.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

My answering machine was disconnected all day yesterday. I'm afraid I missed the job of a lifetime.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

does anyone here like to fix up old bikes?

(kenan - i bugged the HR people again because they didn't send me a confirmation for your resume. i'm pretty sure this is not the job you're referring to, but still.)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

haha It might be! Actually, like I said, I already have friends at cars.com. They love it there. And "love it there" is exactly what I'm looking for.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

anything sounds better than what you have now. at least we don't get guff for our sick days.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I talk to my boss a lot, as I'm walking down the street. Mumble things like, "But you're such a bad businessman! You couldn't manage your way out of a paper bag! Your ideas will never make money! You're completely scatterbrained and you won't listen to anything anyone tells you!"

I am at risk of becoming one of those crazy people who talk to themselves. At least I'm not talking to, say, a slice of pizza.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

hey, i'm a verified food hoarder. i would say that makes us even.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Mmmm, pizza. I could sweet talk some pizza right about now.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

xpost Maybe.

Hi, Amanda. How are you today?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

i'm ok. merely ok. thanks for asking. you?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

holy crap - a world reknowned blues musician! in our atrium!

(this is an official email from the building manager)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Talked to HR dude this morning. Supposed to get a call probably later today to set up an in-person interview.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Think it went ok but I sound like a frog today. Croak croak croak.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

yaaaaaaaay nick! maybe you can catch ice(d) cream and blues in the atrium.

ribbit.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

i'm ok. merely ok. thanks for asking. you?

I have been a lot worse.

Wedding Crashers is funny.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Yay Nick! I'm going to light a candle for everyone looking for a job. One candle for everybody, though. I don't have that many candles.

Kenan, I like that picture a lot.

And why is Wedding Crashers funny? I keep hearing rumors that it's good but I am SKEPTICAL.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Kenan, the schedule is up for the Chicago Jazz Festival. It looks pretty cool, I might come down for shows such as this:

Sept. 5th, Petrillo Music Shell
8:30 - 9:30 Celebrating Tony Williams featuring Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield and Larry Goldings

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

And why is Wedding Crashers funny?

It's funny. It's full of Vince Vaughn making dirty jokes and Owen Wilson being sweet as pie. Christopher Walken plays a Senator, and the scenes with his rich New England family are killer. Gramma talking about what a dyke Elanor Roosevelt was. The gay arty son yelling at his dad at the dinner table, "OH, WOULD THAT MAKE YOU LOVE ME?!" The nymphomaniac daughter tying up Vince Vaughn in the middle of the night. ("I felt like Jodie Foster in The Accused.") There's just some really good stuff here. Lowbrow, formulaic, and good.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

It ends with a Weakerthans song! or so I've heard.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

8:30 - 9:30 Celebrating Tony Williams featuring Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield and Larry Goldings

Why did I think Jack DeJohnette was dead?!

John Scofield is great. They played stuff off his new album on the radio last night.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

I LOVE his new album.

8:30 - 9:30 Roy Haynes' 80th Birthday Celebration Le Petit Jazzband

I should see this too, I mean he's EIGHTY. He looks 50 though, it's crazy.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm still skeptical.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

"Truly, it feels like a long hard time since moviegoers have tasted a piece of this pie, in which guys leer, girls giggle, and no one gets hurt or produces a firearm; it's been such a dry spell, in fact, that the retro, hetero, '70s-style raunch of Wedding Crashers feels new again, modernized by the neo-retro-hetero duo of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as champion skirt-chasers."

Hmm. But is it sexist?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I like John Scofield.

...I have, in the last three days, been to more meetings than I have ever been to previously ever in my entire life.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

so no one is into old bikes? i'm wondering because there are some in our basement that i'm trying to give away/sell.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I need a bike!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

these are old, flabby, out of shape bikes, but they could be fixed up pretty nice and would look cool if someone cared enough for them. but i warn you -- these bikes belong in an infirmary. they look pretty old. they have fenders and stuff.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

There is little that a garden hose and a bottle of orange degreaser won't fix. Well, and maybe new tires.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

alright, well this saturday morning there's a little flea market on my block. let me know when you'll come by and you can have one of our ghetto bikes. (earlier = better)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

make that "your CHOICE of our ghetto bikes."

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

hey, how was the variety show last night?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

It was good. I ended up just talking about this song by Gene Pitney, I didn't "perform" because my throat hurts and my voice is croaky. We slipped out at the intermission. Rob Buscemi was hilarious as always.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

"I just got an orange wallet. It's not a wallet that's colored orange, it's a wallet for carrying oranges. OK, it's a grocery bag."

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I need to figure out a way to make the show less tedious, but we're supposed to fill the night somehow. Say no to crappy improv groups?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Forcibly push off-stage singer-songwriters who decide, after I tell them "one more," to launch into a 12-minute cover of "All Along the Watchtower" with "Another Brick in the Wall" slipped in the middle?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I really don't think you should say no to anyone. It can't all be gold. I just think maybe you should recruit new performers more aggressively (easier said than done, I know) and be more strict about a 10-minute time limit (you should stand offstage and pull people off with a long cane). That way there will be more variety and the lame acts won't be as long.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Did someone really do that, jaymc?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

introduce a gong show aesthetic?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

between every act you could have two wisecracking commentators, like they do at sports events and dog shows.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

The worst would be an improv group of singer-songwriters. I'm not sure how that would work, but I'm sure it would be terrible.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Did someone really do that, jaymc?

Yes. I wouldn't have minded so much if he was the last act of the night, but we had more improv to get through.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

How do you advertise for performers? Or do you? You could put an ad on Craig's List or something to get some fresh acts in there. I like the big cane idea, too.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

oh dear.

i'm going to improv some singer-songwriting right now:

"all the light (light)/in the night (night)/wouldn't make me want to stand up and fight (fight)/for a war i don't believe in, i man i should be leavin and a country that don't do nothin' right [repeat with extra fervor in a different key]"

that was TERRIBLE! and totally improv!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

that was just awful. the only thing worse than night/light is love/above.

barf.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

We do put ads in Craigslist. But a lot of the people that tend to respond for something like this tend to be kind of lame. Actually, that's not fair. Some of them have been pretty cool. But we've never had a show where I was excited about every single act, and some of them I've booked just to fill time. (I'm sure this makes everyone really looking forward to coming now!)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

you guys are all mute with horror. hahahaha.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

You could get some of the Green Mill poetry slam crew, I guess.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Actually, one guy I like that I've booked before is a poetry-slam champion who hosts a night at the Funky Buddha Lounge. Apparently my dad saw him there two nights ago! I was like oh yeah, I know that dude.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

That orange wallet joke is funny. Hedberg-stylez. I wish I could have made it. Instead, my boss bought me dinner at Ruth's Chris (!!!).

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

What kind of work are you doing where your boss takes you to Ruth's Chris?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

xpost: I would suggest that friend/end is even worse. Perhaps not so common in singer/songwriter improv, but woefully common in terrible poetry.

giboyeux, what is your new job? Ruth's Chris! That's one of them fancy steak houses! Is it really any better than a fancy Chicago-brand steakhouse, though?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

(dusting off shoulders, raising herself from the floor one knee at a time)

to come: more job pimping, fewer bad jokes.

i promise.

G - yeah. what jenny said. that's a fancy steakhouse!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Just started a new job at a small ad firm.

It was really delicious!

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

jeff -- HR guy just called me about you. I wonder what he wants!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I would suggest that friend/end is even worse. Perhaps not so common in singer/songwriter improv, but woefully common in terrible poetry.

i'm making bad jokes and straight pimpin' -- doing the best i can with what little i have to offer. (bows)

(i hope this all works out??!?!)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

BEST NEW ILXOR EVER

I'm already inclined to think so. Even her bad poetry is funny.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Just wait until she starts posting photos.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Photos of the Pointer Sisters, you mean? I've had "Automatic" in my head all day.

Hey! Making inappropriate comments about married women is my schtick!

Haha.

BTW, you guys, I wrote about day one of Intonation on my blog. Some site called Chicagmuzik.com is linking to me and referring to me as "Stylus contributor and Canasta member John Cunningham." Which I suppose you could find out if you poked around on the blog long enough, but I'm impressed.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

You're famous and you know it.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Clap your hands.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Chicagmuzik is a good blog, I read it daily.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I am totally sick and spaced out. I just had a surreal cloudy and steamy walk through the industrial area and fancy condovilles northeast of my work while listening to Superpitcher and Out Hud on my iPod. I hope it rains.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Cool, Jeff. (And actually, I was wrong: it's Chicagomuzik.blogspot.com.)

I am feeling a little better today, since I got some good sleep last night. Right now I just feel weak and kinda fuzzy more than anything.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I just took a walk outside too and it was disgusting. I felt like I was inside someone's mouth. A giant, windy, gross mouth.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Man, anyone look at the weather radar? Biiiig thunderstorm potential. I hope the power goes out.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm this close to buying a window unit today.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

you're spot on, amanda. if not a bit gross.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

If the power goes out, I'm RUINED. I have a big research assignment due tomorrow.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I can't decide if I'm up for band practice tonight. I feel gross and my throat is all messed up, but we need the practice, we're practicing our mellow set for an upcoming house party so it wouldn't be that hard, and if we don't have practice I'll probably just lie around watching TV.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

the monster whose mouth we live in wouldn't let that happen, don't worry jenny.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

OK, OK, no power outage. I was just thinking it would be nice to see how my office functions (or completely falls apart) without power.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Holy crumb. I just talked with HR guy and here are his words, exactly:

"they're very interested in kenan"

"jeff -- he seems like an excellent fit for both of these positions, do you know which one he would prefer?"

i said that they should ask you (j), but he also said that he didn't want there to be a conflict among the hiring managers.

that sounds to me like these people are literally fighting over you. how about that? eh? eh?

the HR guy was very cheery on the phone.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Ilxors takin' ovah!

I just got a joint checking account. With Maddie. I feel so...adult.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

:)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I'd prefer the one that pays more, of course. But, I'll look at the descriptions and see again.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Man, joint checking is a big step. I wouldn't do it. For one thing, it would take the surprise out of gifts.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

And then the heavens opened up...

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's not like we put ALL of our money into joint checking. Just a certain amount each month for bills and rent.

This way we can write ONE check for everything and we don't need a calculator to split things up, i.e. we will actually pay our bills on time!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

it sure is storming!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

unfourtunatly, when it started to rain the nice smell of sewage crept in through our windows.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

It's about time!

I mean, not for sewage. It's hardly ever that time.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Congratulations, Jordan! Now for the real test... have you gotten rid of your CD doubles yet? Three months after Jeff and I did we got married. Look out!

Jeff and I had a joint savings, and are going to open another one with our wedding money as soon as I apply for this scholarship so I don't have to list the wedding money as part of our savings. (Sneaky, I know, but damn it's not like I'm rich or nothing.)

And I've thought about it... power outage would be okay. I have a laptop with a fairly long battery life and if the power goes out, I don't have to go to the other work (fourth floor of a church with only a window unit to keep it cool... if that window unit isn't working, I'm not working) and can stay home and work on my research assignment on the magic of battery power.

I definitely hope it keeps raining. All night!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

What I mean is, we need rain really really badly.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

a few times while biking to work via clybourn, leaf & I have noticed a garbage-y smell right around clybourn & ashland. does anyone know why this might be?

by the way, did anyone from my office ever call you, jeff? i haven't heard anything!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

oh boy. this sure is cool. i love rain. i'm also soooooo glad i don't have to teach tonight. i'm still trying to catch up sleep from the last two weeks of chaos.

tons of thunder too!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

No calls yet, Lauren responded to my follow up email, said the decision would be made over "the next few weeks".

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

The rain stopped here, which is too bad because things are still un-green.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

This reminds me of the thunderstorms we used to have back home. Those things would roll across Lake Superior and just blast us. One every other day or so. I think I sleep best during thunder, lightning, and heavy rain.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

you're kidding?!?!?! WEEKS?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I didn't even realize it was raining. I wish I still worked in an office with a window next to my desk.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

xpost That's not such a bad thing. Weeks is ok. It ain't the BK Lounge.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

yes, I don't know how literally that was meant though.

xxxxxxxxpostkelsey

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

weeks wouldn't be bad, except for I've essentially been interviewing for 2 months.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Weeks kind of sucks when you're not working at all.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

why do employers feel that it's ok to keep people hanging that way?

oh, and jeff: HR guy asked me whether you take classes at night and my response was "I'm not sure of his schedule, exactly, but I'm 99% sure he's available to work standard office hours."

99%. what a liar i am. a lar.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

http://www.clare.cam.ac.uk/images/collegelife/staff/melvyn-weeks-03.jpg

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Yes, i'm only taking classes at night, I can work standard work hours.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

amanda, you don't have any job connections in minneapolis, do you?

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

my aunt used to work at the university, but her connections are more of the social middle-aged lesbian variety.

hmmm...i have some friends there, but they're in construction and social work. so, i guess unless you're into construction, social work or middle-aged lesbian community-building, i guess not. :(

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

i can have my aunt hook you up with some awesome patchouli though.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

awesome patchouli = oxymoron?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I ALSO have construction and social work connections in Minneapolis. And the Democratic Party, but that's about it.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I really like incense. I never buy it myself, though. But it feels really cozy to me whenever I encounter it.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Hippy!

No, actually I really like incense too, but sometimes it has a weird after-smell. You know, like the scent when it's burning is pleasant, but later the room smells like yuck.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

i was only 1/2 kidding since you've been such a job force here . . .

and yeah, i think it is an oxymoron. i used to love love love patchouli in high school/early college, but i was a dirtier hippy then. mostly b/c i looked more like one.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

they have marijuana scented incense.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

"they"

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I really like nag champa incense. I think it smells nice during and after. I keep forgetting to burn incense, though. I think it's been to hot to set anything on fire in the house lately.

I actually like patchouli if it's used very sparingly. It can smell really nice on some people. I think it's just misunderstood and greatly misused.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Hey I was a dirty hippy in high school, too. And the second half of college. And beyooooonnnnnd!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I took two years off hippy-dom to wear doc martens and a lot of black.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

i like indian incense (is that nag champa?) but patchouli covers up too much b.o. to smell good to me.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

i like this japanese incense that i can't remember the name of. nag champa is awesome. my roommate found nag champa soap!

i also am a hypocrite b/c i have this MILDLY scented deodorant that is something like orange & patchouli.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry i brough up sewage.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

i would rather have my pits smell like patchouli and oranges than baby powder.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

nag champa soap sounds heavenly.

next stop: thai iced tea ice cream

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

i think i've eaten about 900 calories in candy the past couple of days. this is probably really bad, but it feels so *right*

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

i can work some thai iced tea ice cream into that running total...

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

if i can, i'll go looking for the tea this weekend. it's a step in the right direction.

jaymc - are you still going to l-o-l-l-a-p-a-l-o-o-z-a?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

is anyone going? i bought my ticket months ago in a haze of fury. i'm going with a friend but would like to meet up with people if there are people to meet up with.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

i'm not. i'll be in arkansas.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I am still going, yes! And I knew far fewer people going than to Intonation (does that say anything? I dunno), so yeah, I'd like to hang out. I just hope I get better by the weekend.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

No Lollapalooza for us. Tickets are way too expensive and I don't care about 95% of the bands.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

oh you'll get better. you WILL get better.

why does dinosaur jr only get one hour and widespread craphead gets three? three hours? booo. i'm not staying for that shit.

get my number or email me (handymanda at ameritech.net) or something. i'm pretty excited about jay-lou-murph.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

n/a sums things up nicely there.

xpost: As a friend wondered the other day: would one get kicked out for yelling for "The Freed Pig" at a Dinosaur Jr. reunion show?

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

haha. you won't get kicked out, you get your teeth flossed with the hair of the mascis.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Ewww.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

of course i'm telling you the truth -- the world is mean, and man uncouth!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you know, there's part of me that thinks maybe I won't go to Lollapalooza after all, even though I already have tickets. I don't know. I can just see myself thinking it'd be nice to have a weekend to get some stuff done. Although I guess I'm supposed to write about it...

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

(I really wish now I'd thought to get a Press Pass -- supposedly they're out now.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

oh, come on now. i thought the same thing. that i didn't really want to go after this past weekend. i have TONS of stuff to do.
but seriously - -it'll be fun. you wouldn't throw that much money out a window, would you?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

lou will cry if you don't go.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Lou will cry if his eggs aren't cooked hard enough.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Then he'll record 6 Sebadoh albums about it.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

ahahhaha

I'd go if I didn't have to pay for anything.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't care about Dinosaur Jr.! There! I said it!

I guess I liked that one song they played on Q101 in 1994. "Feel the Pain" or whatever.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Bands I wouldn't mind seeing at Lolla:

Spoon
Blonde Redhead
Drive-By Truckers
The Black Keys
The (International) Noise Conspiracy
Liz Phair
The Killers

that's about it.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm prob. most excited for these bands:

Spoon
Death Cab for Cutie
The Pixies
The Killers
The Arcade Fire
Blonde Redhead
Digable Planets
M83

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Somebody should go see Digable Planets.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I mean, they're digable.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

DPs are awesome.

Also, you know, Billy Idol for WTF factor, and Tegan and Sara for cute lesbian twin gawking.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

are you serious? that makes me feel old. i loved them.

anyway, liz phair will probably let you feel her up, so that's a good enough reason for going right there.

i'm looking forward to all of those, plus brian jonestown massacre and ponys. and black keys -- akron reprezent!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

All those bands sound very ... ROCK.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I'd watch m83 again, but their first show at the emptybottle was a big eh. I'd watch liz phair just fill out her DL renewal form.

xpost, I'd like to see the ponys too.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Actually, there are a lot of bands I'd want to see, but I'd probably just get dehydrated again.

Plus, there will be too many people trying to start shit there. I'm not up for crowd surfing, especially. People love to use me to climb UP THERE.

I was reading the awful lolla recap in 1nnerv1ew last night at the Beat K1tchen, but it still made me want to go.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

in sum, it's not going to suck all that bad. you know who to call for trail mix.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I do predict a high percentage of shitheads. You're right Sarah. I always get the elbow-in-the-boob and the armpit-in-the-face. yuk.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

The Ponys sounded terrible on record the one time I heard them. But maybe I am just not very disposed to that sort of thing. It still baffles me how Husker Du has a huge cult audience, when it all just sounds like bad, lo-fi recordings of a band jamming in their practice space.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I am not a big fan of the Ponys. I think they are an average band that is inexplicably overrated. And now the one guy who did interesting stuff isn't in the band anymore.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

i loooooooove husker du! i like the combination of noise + melody. and while some of his songs are patently awful, i think Grant Hart is underrated in the shadow of the Mould.

maybe it just reminds me of being young, i dunno. new day rising is one of my favorite albums of all time.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

and as you can see, i'm not afraid to admit it.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

(hahaha xpost ... MELODY? WHERE?!)

Also, I should have added about Husker Du that they are jamming in a non-tuneful manner. Except for "Pink Turns to Blue." And probably other songs that people will now mention that I haven't actually heard.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I mean, of course, I love noise + melody. Sonic Youth is probably my favorite band ever. I just don't hear much to latch onto, melodically, in Husker Du. But the only album I've heard all the way through is Candy Apple Grey.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Oddly enough, I don't care much for the Husker Du I've heard either. jaymc and n/a agreeing about loud rock music shocka!

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

have you heard new day rising? it's overflowing with melody! zen arcade is touted as their masterwork, but i honestly think that new day rising is the best. oh, candy apple grey is horrible, by the way.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I never got HD either. I've tried a lot. I never got Minnapolis, except for Lifter Puller. And some prince.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I had Zen Arcade. I think eventually I sold it.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

i have a bob mould album that i hate.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

I have friends who love Husker Du specifically for the melodies, I think.

Their band supposedly sounds like Husker Du + the Replacements (I wouldn't know, because I've only heard each of those bands approximately once).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I love Sugar though!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, actually, I looooove Sugar's "Gee Angel"! That song is AWESOME.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, I'll have to hear New Day Rising, then. I borrowed Candy Apple Grey from an ex-girlfriend, and afterward, when I asked her to tell me what she liked about it, she just kind of shrugged and said it reminded her of high school.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

The Replacements are totally not my thing, at all, but at least I can understand why people like them. That whole earnest, rootsy pub-rock, with thoughtful lyrics thing.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

i'll be happy to make a welcome to husker du mix for anyone who cares. i'm confident i can sell you on it.

husker du + replacements were the soundtrack to my awkwardest years. i still think it's good though.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I really like the Ponys. Also, I like their records. Also, I like Husker Du. Also, I like sugar, as in actual sugar. I want some mint chocolate chip ice cream. Also, I like lo fi rock records, especially from the time Zen arcade came out. I do not, however, like footprints on my back.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, have you picked a theme for the NEXT Squeezed?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, I'll take you up on the mix CD offer. Keep in mind that I like MELODY. (Yeah, I know, Geir, whatever. Thing is, I kinda sympathize with the dude sometimes, tho.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

(xp) The theme is THE BUG.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

The Bug?

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Um, yeah.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

THE BUG

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

As in Dinosaur Jr.?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Amanda and I are going to hang out in the old folk's rock corner and listen to Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. all day and the rest of you youngins can go crowd surf and listen the "electronica" and your "cheerleader pop core."

x-post: Sarah can hang out, too!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh boy, I'll get started right away. I've waited 15 years for someone to take me up on that! It won't be too long, either, because I think 25 songs is too much to digest at once. Trust me when I say that I'm a sucker for the melody too.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, actually, I looooove Sugar's "Gee Angel"! That song is AWESOME.

Have you heard Copper Blue? Melodies 'til Tuesday. Pretty genius all the way around, actually.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

The Dinosaur Jr. album?

xpost damn it sarah :)

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Not a whole lot of melody on "Don't"...

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) See, I don't even know what you guys are talking about.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I used to own Copper Blue, I didn't like it either. I do like Dinosaur Jr. though.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh see, but the Dino Jr. album is called BUG, this is THE BUG.

HUGE difference.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Totally unrelated: I was supposed to give my very first worker right's workshop to a bunch of building trade union wannabes way the holy fuck down on the south side tomorrow with the support of my boss (both to field the (many) questions that I won't be able to answer and drive) and he just totally bailed on me to attend some bullshit dinner cruise that one of our volunteer attorneys gives every year.

Now I not only have no fucking clue what I'm doing (I attended one of these workshops about six months ago and barely remember it), but I don't have any way to get home from there, either! (I can catch a ride to the workshop with another coworker, but he lives down there, and I can't even get the CTA's website to admit that the address exists.)

Needless to say, my current mood is: LIVID

booo!! can you get the worker justice league to cover a cab?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

hahahaha.

No.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

i didn't think so.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

too bad i'll be in arkansas b/c i could borrow my roommate's car & pick yer ass up! if i still had my car, i'd let you take it!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

i just realized that a couple of you (jeff, kenan) emailed my ilx address. i only check that email once every month or so . . . for the real thing, try k3ls3yd1lts [at] gmail.com only substitute the actual letters of my name for the numbers.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

We have a car, I am just a bad Chicago driver who gets lost in her own neighborhood and has driven four times in the last year (not counting driving in Dodgeville, WI, which can be done blindfolded).

I think I could put on my big girl pants to give the workshop without help, and I think I could put on my big girl pants and drive 20 miles across Chicago by myself, but I don't think my big girl pants are big enough to drive all the way there, give a workshop, and drive back. At least not without a lot of crying.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

i know exactly -- precisely -- how you feel. the best thing about big girl pants is that they have elastic waistbands that expand when you need them to be bigger. like sans-a-belts.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Wahey. I got a phone call from cars.com.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

word

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Amanda officially rocks. People make the world go 'round.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Lookit me - I'm a 21st century mirth machine.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

And I have an interview on Mon. at the office. Now I have to figure out how to get out of work to go to the interview.

I had the door to my office closed to call the HR guy back and the woman I hate knocked on my door and IMMEDIATELY walked in to get something. Fortunately I wasn't saying anything at the time, but whatever. Maybe I have my door closed for a reason. What if I had been naked?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

can you take your lunch hour early to "renew some library books"?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

They said the process would take "a couple of hours," so basically I need to get the whole afternoon off. I think I will probably just end up calling in sick that day. I have been coughing all week, so that helps.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

You should sit in your office naked just to teach that bitch a lesson.

Okay, I got a ride to the workshop and can take busses and a train back home. Now it's just all about fear of looking like an idiot in front of 50 carpenter pre-apprentices.

Jesus. If there were slugs somehow involved in all this mess tomorrow, all of my major anxiety triggers would be covered!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I don't get a lunch hour. I get a lunch 10 minutes. I'll need a doctor's appointment. Not a real one, obv. I'm thinking psychiatrist, because I've been so depressed, and thus I'll also explain my lackadaisical behavior at the office lately by way of modern science.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

My schedule is open! Everyone inteview ME!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

calm down fellas, i think you'll all get your chance to ride the merry go round.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Ah heck, this is probably too late but Amateur(ist), I emailed you back last night and I just called and left what I hope is a charmingly airheaded message on your voicemail. I mean I hope it's charming. I know it's airheaded.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

I personally find it charming when blazingly smart people act like airheads. Your results may vary.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps in the future I will put "Founder of the Jenny Fan Club" on my resume.

I'm sorry, Jenny. "Blazingly" was a bit much, perhaps.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh, by the way, did anyone else puke from the heat this afternoon? I did. It's not that it's so hot, but after it rained it got hotter, and so wet that it sucked all the moisture out of me, and I lost my lunch.

Fun story, huh?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I liked "blazingly."

It's just because I'm married, isn't it?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

I didn't puke today, but once when I lived in Delaware it was over 100 for about two weeks and I puked from that heat. It finally rained like crazy and my dirtbag friends and me laid down in the middle of the street in puddles, we were so happy. (Only one person we knew had AC (and only in her bedroom) and I lived in an attic so it was a pretty miserable couple weeks.)

It's just because I'm married, isn't it?

Maybe.

Oh, I have so many things to talk to my fake psychiatrist about.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

As you know, I threw up Saturday because of the heat. And actually, last summer I threw up one day because of the heat too. My car's AC wasn't working and I drove out pretty far from my work on my lunch break to get a smoothie. It was nice and cold. And then it was hot in my belly. And then it jumped right out of me! Gross!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

puking sounds so much cuter when sarah does it though, like it's a little barf-goblin leaping out of her belly.

kenan - i saw your fake psychiatrist in the elevator this morning and he thanked me for sending him "so many good people."

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

That really makes me feel good.

No, Thank you.

I have to sneak out for lunch to call him today.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Sorry to start off the day with a puke story.

It's really really quiet at my desk. Shhhh...!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

It's kinda dead here, too. I'm stamping and sealing things. It's kinda nice to do a little dull temp work once in a while. It's blissfully brainless.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

dang, we be quiet.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Quiet is a virtue.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

shh! I'm working.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

It's not quiet here, not physically. There's some kind of home improvement going on. Replacing light fixtures, knocking down a wall... all day I listen to drilling and banging and smell drywall dust. I'm not half as disturbed by it as the lady of the house, who is just horrified.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Please keep it down.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Okay. We'll be very very quiet.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I think we should all talk like this for the rest of the day.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW YOU MAKE THE LETTERS SMALL LIKE THAT.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

neither do i.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Style tag. I attached it to the «i» tag.

«i style="font-size:8px;"»

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

But replace a single bracket.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh goodness we're shouting again. Shhhhhhh.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

OMG everything's gone green.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

LET'S WHISPER LOUDLY INSTEAD.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

This is so sub-noize.

Look! Mauve!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Now you're just showing off.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm also a big fan of salmon.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Tan can be dull, but mixed with a little teal it takes on a pleasant pastel Southwestern feeling.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

But nothing beats a nice viridian.

I'm boring the shit out of you, aren't I?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

silence speaks for itself.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Viridian. See, I told you.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard that record. That's quite a band.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I have to figure out how to turn records in mp3s, and I'll rip it for you.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

And yeah, I know! Grant Green and McCoy Tyner would be quite a band by themselves.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

i like how that french guy says "mcCOY tyNER" at the start of some coltrane album -- love supreme live or something?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I've always liked Mickey Roker, too. He's the underdog of jazz drummers, and he's on my favorite Milt Jackson album:

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm so glad there's somebody else in the world who likes jazz.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I like jazz. I play saxophone!

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm so glad that there's somebody who's not a jazz musician who likes jazz!

xpost, DO YOU SEE?!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

You're all too cool.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I AM VERY COOOL.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I haven't puked in eons, since I was a little kid. I have a pretty strong stomach and also my tolerance is low enough that I never really drink enough to puke from drinking.

I don't care much for jazz, except for Albert Ayler, oddly enough.

I've been doing work today!

I had a little mini-crisis last night about jobs and school and my future and stuff but I mainly put it down to being sick. But I also watched the PBS special on Chicago's own Bob Newhart, which was fun.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Mini-crises suck just as much as big ones, but only in the middle of them.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I pretty much only have mini-crises, fortunately. Except that they're all part of the same MEGA-CRISIS, just spread out intermittently.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I have been wasting time playing Kingdom of Loathing, and doings earthmounds of work.
I don't like jazz beyond the swing era, which I love. My dad and an old boyfriend tried very hard to get me to like Coltrane and Miles Davis but I just don't like it : ( I think it's the lack of melody. Not to be a Hongro.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I dated a jazz guitarist once, but I've been trying to slowly learn to appreciate it again. Very, very slowly.

You know where I want to explore this weekend? Around Hamlin Park - it always looks so cute when I drive by it (like last night when I was going to visit julia/jbdules).

Question: What are some cool retro/used furniture stores in Chicago that aren't completely overpriced? I have found a couple of awesome lamps and a sideboard at the Arc in my hood, but I really want to find a couple of arm chairs that are in decent shape. Recommend away!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I like jazzy more than I like jazz. By which I mean, I really like jazz flavors in other music. I like jazz, too. I just don't really feel compelled to seek much of it out.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Question 2 : Have any of you been to Brookfield Zoo? Lately? Is it awesome?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Gawd, you're such a HONGRO.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I haven't been to Brookfield Zoo in probably ten years, but it's a good zoo, for sure. I went to LP Zoo after work a couple weeks ago and was kind of disappointed. There's just really not all that much there. Brookfield is huge.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Against all odds and my concepts of using public transit/bike/feet to get around, I bought a car. It's a 1995 Corolla Wagon, one owner, with only 56k miles on it. Now I have a way to cart my drums around and go for pointless drives to places like "the South" whenever I want. I think I'm going to keep with the train/bus ride to work, though. But being able to sleep in that extra half-hour is reallllly tempting.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

I've really come to appreciate New Orleans jazz in the last couple years because it stays grounded, there's always a focus on melody and danceability.

Maddie and I took a cat to the vet this morning. We're going to have to give him meds that he hates and pay a lot of money for dentistry, but at least he doesn't have any life-threatening diseases. There was also a swarm of kittens in the office, they were like popcorn.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

I like jazz. That is to say, I like hearing jazz. I can't be bothered to learn all that much bullshit trivia, history and such about it, like I have with the rock n' roll. Scorch Trio is the kind of jazz I've listened to lately. Although that might not really be jazz. A friend of mine had a really insightful quote about jazz he used to drag out once in a while, I'll see if I can find it.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I can't be bothered to learn all that much bullshit trivia, history and such about it, like I have with the rock n' roll.

haha Yeah, I understand. Listening to any kind of music gets to be like baseball after a while.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

kittens like popcorn! i love it!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Me too!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

and sarah, i'm going to have to say that you are the ONLY person to have ever made barfing sound remotely attrative. it *does* sound cute when you talk about it!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I've been reading about Domino Harvey this morning, after seeing the movie trailers, which are annoying and apart from the weird yellow color pallete look pretty terrible. Like Skinemax directed by Tony Scott.

Anyway, she was apparently a butch dyke, and the movie makes her a sexy hetero. WTF? So so bad.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

It sounds cute when I talk about barfing? Grody! That makes me wanna puke!

Do you know what I hate? Being on hold forever and then having to answer a million voice prompts and say YES really loudly. Ugh. I had to call Pe0ple's gas to pay my boss's bill this morning, but they never let me pay it. Now I'm holding with SBC about a phone problem out at a property. It keeps saying "PLEASE CONTINUE TO HOLD" every few seconds.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Also, I inevitably space out and miss a prompt question and then get disconnected.

I know not of Domino Harvey. I will do some research.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

You mean, like, his personal bill, Sarah? Ugh.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I increasingly prefer live jazz over records these days. I'm really looking forward to seeing the jazz group (Sabertooth) who plays after us at the Green Mill next Saturday. Ted Sirota is the drummer and they were kicking ass last time.

I'm not looking forward to the house band who runs the jam after we play on Friday night. The sax player sux and the bass player makes me not want to sit in.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I have to be there Saturday. I will be.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Awesome. It's the 30th, not the 23rd, lest I cause more confusion.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

poop! i'll be grumpily moving my bf to minneapolis!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

excuses, excuses.

kels, are you going to see the north atlantic play on friday night? i think i will.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I prefer free jazz.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I just had an interview with the nicest recruiter. He may have just been buttering me up, but he told me that I have a really nice resume and I'm really more talented than I let on. Then he said he has a job that pays 45k a year. I immediately said sign me up.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Archers of Loaf Vs. the Greatest of All Time is rocking my afternoon away. Hooray for guitars that hate each other!

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Of course, I still have to interview with the actual company.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

xpost - as for jazz, i like miles, pharoah sanders and albert ayler the best. i do not play jazz, but i also dated a jazz guitarist once. a jazz guitarist named walt.

i just got back from lunch with the coworkers, where we were "saying goodbye" to someone who got a new job. i didn't have much money on me, nor did i want to spend much. so i got a $7 appetizer.

then they told us at the end of the meal that we all had to put in $17, to round it off evenly. i was not aware of this arrangement at the beginning of the meal.

fair?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

No. I hate that shit. Like when I was invited to a "Birthday Party" for a friend (of a friend), and it turned out to be an expensive sushi restaurant. And then at the end of the meal, everybody put in a share except for the birthday girl, who of course had gorged herseld on nigiri. Bitch, invite your rich friends out to buy you sushi. Leave me out of it.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

john, this friday? i'm leaving tonight for arkansas . . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

i realize that i'm an upper tier cheapskate, but still. yeah -- at least tell me ahead of time so i eat more than three tiny lettuce-and-chicken thai tacos!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah, kels. so, uh, tomorrow.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

You mean, like, his personal bill, Sarah? Ugh.
Yeah. Actually, he asked someone else in the office to do it and she passed the order down to me.

My boss in VA had me paying his personal bills all the time, even when he was sitting at the desk right next to me. Then he'd get really annoyed if I had to transfer the call to him for say I was authorized to pay his bills.

My boss now, whose bill I was trying to pay earlier, just came up, handed me a $20, and asked me to go to the restaurant next door and get him a sandwhich.

I just think it's kind of funny that these people have so much money to buy STUFF, but they can't be bothered to go through the actual transaction themselves. Personally, I would think spending the money would be part of the fun.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

what's money without the power to push people around?

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

True.

Anyway, I totally hate the 'Let's all just put in the same amount to make it easy' approach. It's not that hard to figure out who owes what.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I think it's time for a new thread.
