~ Prompted by a discussion on the Walkmen thread -- about how a bunch of us L.A. Ilx people were at the show but nobody really knows anybody else -- I thought I would start an easily revivable thread for people in Los Angeles (or people who are going to visit Los Angeles) to post the shows they are attending, and maybe it can facilitate some meeting up at shows or something like that.

Maybe it's a doomed notion, but I think the idea of a clear-cut set of revivable, region-specific threads based on city names would be a good resource (I realize there are a number of threads based on cities, but I like the idea of this kind of thing having it's own genre, like C/D, POX, etc.).

So if you are in another city, start a thread for there if you like. ~

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Per Dean Gulberry, tonight March 4, 2004: Deerhoof at the Echo.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be at Spaceland on Thurs 3/11 to see Stars.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe it can facilitate some meeting up at shows or something like that.

Oh, this has happened many times now. ;-) However, still a good idea. Next brace of shows for me will not be LA per se, though -- Stereolab in Costa Mesa, the Church in San Diego, A Perfect Circle in Long Beach. Next LA/Hollywood show is Sparks in early April.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Next LA show for me is going to be The Church at House Of Blues. Otherwise it's the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in San Diego, Stereolab in Costa Mesa

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

are the Melvins playing in LA? i'm seeing them in SD! i'll be at jeff mills in LA, too.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh that's right, they're playing next weekend. Hm, I should go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is playing with Jeff Mills Vahid and where?

hector (hector), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - nobody i know about, at spundae, and next saturday (13th)

total raver hell!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Just watch for the bumpin' K-CREW van parked outside the venue and you will have time to run for the hills.

Thea (Thea), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

kcrw jipped me on legendary pink dots tickets goddamn it. fuck a npr.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Chaki, this is not right. We must have the Stereolab summit meeting where you and Thea bury the hatchet and bop out (as opposed to rock out).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i can do that!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 5 March 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Good, good. But we have to smuggle you in, since the show is I think sold out down here HMM. Are they also playing LA? And what shows are you seeing soon anyway?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

stereolab - san diego, april 30th ... two blocks from my house!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

at the worst, most fucked-up lame venue in history

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

So you should go there and incite red revolution.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm (scratches hairy chin with clawlike finger) And what would be the name of that San Diego venue, my pretty?

Thea (Thea), Friday, 5 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Not the great Frank Black song thread I was hoping for.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Friday, 5 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

okay okay, even a bad witch can google.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 5 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 5 March 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Take them home with you, and keep them there!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 5 March 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

hector (hector), Friday, 5 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing that I won't see you here then, eh, gygax?

i would rather siphon an oil tanker worth of rotten eggs and stale vomit into my stomach.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 5 March 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

oh shit, Clearlake is playing Spaceland. Gotta go to that one.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 5 March 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i would rather siphon an oil tanker worth of rotten eggs and stale vomit into my stomach.

I didn't think you meant it until I read that the vomit would be stale.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 5 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Tha Mae Shi is definitely worth seeing. Don't they have a residency coming up somewhere or something?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Saturday, 6 March 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah they're at the Derby, I think. mae-shi.com (I can't be bothered to look it up)

dean! (deangulberry), Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I take it back. Silverlake Lounge, Mondays in March.

dean! (deangulberry), Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

So Dizzee is apparently at the Key Club next Thursday. And Luomo the day after, and that Rephlex show. None of which I'll be able to make.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? I'll go to all of those!

Stars were great last night, btw.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The crap thing was I missed a note yesterday from my friend Dan B on Friendster saying he was going to that show and could have given me a ride! ARGH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It was great. The Dears were amazing too! I am now a groupie for they're keyboardist.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Clinic is playing the Knitting Factory in May. Also, Acid Mothers Temple.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

YA, CLINIC. Excellent.

Thea (Thea), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope they play Spaceland too. I know that the Unicorns and AMT are both doing shows at KF and Spaceland.

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Knitting Factory leaves me cold, though the booker is a good guy. Spaceland is always the favourite, in my book.

Thea (Thea), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't realize AMT were coming back through, could be fun. Ah, Clinic. A band I am resolutely neutral on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Which KF booker, the tall guy?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I didn't get Clinic until the song "Walking With Thee" appeared in the context of that second 'Sonic Mook' compilation.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Clinic songs mostly sound alike but I like the manic weirdness of their somewhat uniform songs. Never seen them live.

Thea (Thea), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Vahid, you live near the BUT? Did you go see any of the Nortec fridays things? I wanted to go but always had out of town biz those days.

Also, sign me up for Mills@suckdae tomorrow.

tylero, Saturday, 13 March 2004 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

man you guys must be rich

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 13 March 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be seeing the yeah yeah yeahs tonite at the henry fonda theatre.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Saturday, 13 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

If it were the Peter Fonda Theatre, then yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

morris pavilion (samjeff), Saturday, 13 March 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 14 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

KXLU gave me a couple free tickets to the Unicorns, Beans and ... somebody else. Friday at the Knitting Factory. Beans is eh but I'm excited to see the Unicorns. Anybody want the other ticket?

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking about stopping by Spaceland to see them tonight. (already have friday plans).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be at the KF show.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be at the N.E.R.D./Black Eyed Peas show at the Wiltern tonight.

Also, Prince @ The Staples Center next Monday

Randy Reiss (undeadsinatra), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

So, like I was saying, are Dance Disaster Movement good? I saw them at one of their first shows a long time ago opening for Q and Not U and I wasn't sure if they were just another Rapture-clone... but I hear enough good things about them to make me curious... how are their recordings?
And which show did you see last night, Morris?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, then:

The show last night was the Sharp Ease and DDM opening for the Von Bondies, at the Troubadour. DDM are two dudes dressed all in white - one of them, tall and dignified-looking, wails away on a drumkit, while his partner, a somewhat goofy guy with a stone-faced, "I'm dead serious!" schtick, plays a few jagged bars on a guitar, sets them to repeat, then puts down the guitar... plays a few shrill keyboard riffs, and sets those to repeat... then, to go along with the synth 'n' guitar soundscape he has created, he busts out a few robot dance moves, sings-screams-chants dramatically, drops to his knees (while wearing just white boxer shorts down beneath, no pants - ouch), wades out into the crowd and puts a guy in a headlock, etc. All the while, his buddy is really pounding on that kit!

The frontman's a bit silly... like other frontpeople these days I could name, he seems to want to be "wild" and "confrontational," but seems just half-assed about it. But the drummer was really good, and their set was definitely entertaining. Their one song I really liked had lyrics that went something like, "I've got shit in my pants!, and piss in my bed!..."

My girlfriend has the CD, and says it's not great... you have to see them, get hit will the drums and live synth to get the experience, she says... (I just checked out a few MP3s on their site, and it's true, they're pretty bland.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

We really like the Sharp Ease, by the way... (We've wanted to see them for some time, but never got around to it until last night.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

prince killed it at the staples center!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Xiu Xiu at the Smell this Friday (!!!)

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The DDM song I liked is "The Shots" - there's actually an MP3 here. The lo-fi recording really doesn't do it justice, though.

(The whole time they were performing, I kept blankly thinking "Andrew WK vs. Wolf Eyes" - because of the white outfits and the noisy synth and the go-for-broke attitude. I don't have any idea what Wolf Eyes actually sound like, of course.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard The Sharp Ease yet, but when I was in college my old band played a few shows with The Grown Ups, who were a fun band that put a record out on Sympathy for the Record Industry... they were all like 15-year-old high school girls -- and the singer from that band, Paloma, is in The Sharp Ease, so I've been meaning to check them out.

So the Von Bondies stank? I have been meaning to pick up their CD, because "C'mon C'mon" is like my favorite single of the year -- I can't believe that's not huge on KROQ. Is it a fluke that that song rules? Does the rest of the album blow?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like "C'mon C'mon," too. (It's huge on Indie 103.1, so it'll probably be on KROQ in another month or so.) The rest of the album is just okay. Definitely not worth seeing live. (The singer was really irritating - posing and preening like ye olde Major-Label Rock Star.)

(Franz Ferdinand, on the other hand, tore down the Troubadour last week! We've got tickets to see them at the Avalon in June, but I'm really glad that we saw them when and where we did... what a show!)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I am bummed I missed that Franz Ferd show. I picked up both the singles this past weekend -- the b-sides are excellent. I highly recommend the "Take Me Out" one, which has a catchy as hell, more-than-album-worthy song called "All For You Sophia" and a slowed down lounge-y version of "Darts of Pleasure" that sounds like Arab Strap or something and is called "Words of Leisure."
Anyways, thanks for the heads up on the Von Bondies album. God, that single is killer though. And a perfect length at just a ways over 2 minutes

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, neat, I'll have to check those singles out (I hadn't heard about them before).

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys are so nerdy

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No argument here.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Our dream concert:

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Morris, please join me...

"Clap your hands everybody, and everybody clap your hands!

We're Lambda Lambda Lambda and... Omega Mu
We come here on stage tonight to do a show for you

We've got a rockin rythm and a high tech sound
That'll make you move your body down to the ground

We've got Poindexter on the violin
And Louis and Gilbert will be joinin' in

We've got Booger Presley on a mean guitar
And a rap by little old me Lamar

We've got Takashi beating on his gong
The boys and the Mu's are clapping along

And just when you thought you'd seen it all
Along comes a Lambda 4 ft tall!"

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Most beautiful.

Anyway, all you bums have to be at the Sparks show a week from Saturday or I will pout. *pouts anyway*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sparks of course, but first Electrelane next Fri... Ned, do you really like Timonium (opener) or did they bribe you with Taco Mesa antojitos to write that kind AMG review?

Thea (Thea), Friday, 2 April 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, I missed this comment earlier -- yeah, I think they're great!

Anyway, Sparks on Saturday. Arthur and I are in, possibly Chaki. Come join us! A slew of folks on my Sparks list are getting together beforehand (and possibly afterward) for drinks, food and chat. Also, Thea and I have a mission to perform for the person introducing the band. ;-) Drop me a line if you're in.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! I am personally transporting "person introducing the band". Let me know where I can deliver this precious package before the show.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys run rings around my poor brain.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The openers for that Electralene show at Spaceland are that band I'm always gushing over, Silversun Pickups... so make sure to show up to see them if you like the early 90's shoegazer-y MBV /"Gish" / type thing. I love them deeply...

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Chaki -- okay! I have no idea if I'll see you there tonight but if I do, rah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys are going to miss the noise. Shame.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Daedelus is excellent, and I must spread the love -- he was the bass player in my old band... and of course Dntel is great. That show should be fantastic, it's a who's who of LA electronix peoples.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Alfred Daedaelus is really great live and kicks ass. last time i saw him he was throwin some crazy cure samples in the mix!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

WOW that headspace show sounds great!! the sutekh / tejada / jasper combo looks killer. makes me want to call in sick tomorrow.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

As it is I'm completely tired from work and the Perfect Circle show last night (v. good stuff) so whoever goes tonight has my envy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I might try to show up late to see DNTEL spin. Hopefully, I'll see some of you there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You will not see me there. Unless "there" is seeing Tamala 2010 and then seeing NOISE.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

did anybody go?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That noise show was amazing (!!!) Dunno about the DNTEL jibberjabber though.

Or these shows -- while not music -- are always fun: @ the Knitting Factory in Hollywood, UnCabaret ’s "Other Network" night with screenings of TV comedy pilots that never made it to the air from writers of "Larry Sanders" and "Mr. Show," among others...7 p.m., $10...

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Friday, 16 July 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeremy - The Langham is on Normandie, fyi. I lived at the Langham for 4 years. What do you want to know?

Email me if it's extensive so we don't trespass here. But one piece of music trivia for you: A famous jazz guitarist drowned in the rooftop pool in 1984.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Serious L.A. hipster action at the Silverlake Lounge tonight. One-time poster Leslie (as in she made a single post, once) will be playing with Pink Grenade along with Gogogo Airheart and les Messieurs du Rock.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be going home tonight and maybe slapping a disk into my player, if there's nothing good on TV.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't you heard of "Operation Gatekeeper"? Even Mexican ratons and cucarachas aren't allowed in no matter how good they are at gardening, bussing tables and child-minding. That's fukked up

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh thanks Thea

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

if i combined Red Lion sausage with !!! i might not survive. i plan to stick to a blueberry smoothie with an extra shot of power-boost

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the Red Lion has very paranoid waitresses, I've noticed. You get up to wander outside for a smoke and they sort of follow you.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

What're they worried about, sausage-smuggling?

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm always trying to sneak out sausages, true.

And I think the keyboard karaoke guy creates an atmosphere of distrust.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

As usual, Deerhoof killed it... I missed Future Pidgeon because they amazingly went on at the scheduled time

and I think the singer of !!! is developing a god-complex. But I got to jump around and get body-checked by lots of KXLUitos.

Maybe I'll listen to the record again as I may change my mind about !!! live show being better than record.

"These extraordinary ensembles pay deep respect to their Indian and Turkish musical heritage by composing for traditional acoustic instruments and vocal styles while adding elegant electronic samples and beats that take the listener on a journey from the past to the future."

nickn is that better than it sounds?

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure this was already mentioned but if not:

September 18 (Sat)
M83 (Mute / Gooom), Ulrich Schnauss (City Centre
Offices), Six Parts Seven. Venue: Knitting Factory.
8pm. $13.

Most tempting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned:
I will be at this show for sure...comes right after I'm out in CA, and right before UCI starts up and doesn't make me feel so bad about missing them at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. Though I've heard not so great things about the Knitting Factory.

robots in love (robotsinlove), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll very likely be there. Knitting Factory is fine.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally clueless when it comes to LA clubs, so at this point I'm willing to go wherever.

robots in love (robotsinlove), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

knitting factory does in fact suck, but not in a way that would make me never ever want to to go see anything there..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What sucks about it?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Friends of mine who see shows there regularly say the venue's gone a bit downhill over time, but the few times I've been there have been okay -- I do recall Stan Ridgway telling Elvis T and I that he was singularly unimpressed with the place recently, though.

Robots: ah yes, you'll be out here soon! We'll have to plot and plan regarding getting you used to hauling yourself up to LA for shows.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have problems with the crowd at the Knitting Factory. From my experience, the venue tends to be filled with people who want to be out doing something as opposed to people who want to see the bands playing. But if you don't mind people talking through someone's set, then there's not really a problem there. This is also due to how "hip" a band currently is.

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't fault them though for the A/C being broken during the sweltering AMT show a few months back, as much as I'd like to...

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the venue tends to be filled with people who want to be out doing something as opposed to people who want to see the bands playing

haha - So you mean it's like every other venue ever?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

No, actually. It's worse in that regard because it's in Hollywood. ;p

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

So....it's like every other venue?

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about all those fake Hollywood "star f-ers" ruining the authentic live experience, man!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anyone else planning on going to the Animal Collective/Black Dice on Sat. August 28th at the Knitting Factory? I know the Echo show would probably be preferable, vibe-wise, but I live right next door to the Knitting Factory on Sycamore and I was hoping that day to barbecue and go swimming (at my apt. building), and then walk down to the show. Maybe this could be one of these FAPs...? Swimming, hamburgers, eerie and pretty noise?

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If only to see what the shouting about those two is about, that could be an interesting show. Might be out of town that weekend, we'll see.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(xposts, etc)

Don't take it personally, Spencer! You're different.

Ben, I'll be at both of those shows.

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, the thing is, I'm *not*!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

In other Knitting Factory angst, I kinda want to see the Michael Rother show there on Thursday but I'm annoyed that the "special guest" is John Frusciante.

On the east coast, Rother's special guest was Richard Pinhas. *grumble grumble*

Anyway, when the Knitting Factory first opened it was rather nice - sort of a pre-fab version of what a comfortable hipster club would be. Since then, the dry rot has set in - the furniture steadily removed and the lounge area converted into an ill-advised second stage. Now it's just another shitty run down club. It's a tremendous hassle to park there too.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed I'd like to see Pinhas more but Frusciante is pretty damned cool.

Ha! - can we start the posts from registered posters only thing immediately please???

Make a formal request with the mod board. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, why are you winking???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw one of Frusciante's shows at the Knitting Factory, with Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass and the guy from Thelonious Monster on drums, and it was actually pretty awesome. You could do a lot worse!

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, why are you winking???

Because I have no idea how serious you are!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

A fellow ILM board member (read: me) has an EP release show Friday August 6th. It'd be great if any of you LA posters come check it out and say hi. There's some excellent "indie" music on the bill....we play Beatles/Ramones/Weezer/They Might Be Giants-style music.

I thought that show sold out! Hi there, whoever you are, BTW -- have you been lurking for a while?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 August 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what the deal is with that 'posted 12/9/2002' thing but it is up on the echo's (rudimentary) webpage. http://www.attheecho.com

there is also a glenn underground warehouse party later that night that i'm going to try and make it to. Ravey davey gravey.

tylero (tylero), Saturday, 28 August 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

been lurking lightly since before the place went down in June(snagged by the white noise supremacist threads, I think?), started posting a few weeks ago, glad to see I've made an impression. Seemed like everyone knew everybody and was a prof. critic but the laymen seem welcome enough so I'll stay. Semi-regular on rateyourmusic (I even linked to some ILM threads from there when I was lurking) but I'd rather come where people talk too much than talk too little.
btw I just heard about the show today and got reasonable tickets online. the most expensive and cheapest tickets are sold out but there's some more seats up for grabs as far as I know

What was LCD like? What was the setup? Songs played? And were they selling that comp?!

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Friday, 29 October 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago)

LCD was drums, bass guitar, vocals, keyboard, combo-dude (guitar, keyboard, percussion). Murphy was wearing a Can t-shirt and played timbales at one point. Pretty tight, great BASS! Murphy doesn't seem entirely comfortable (doesn't engage with the crowd much), but is very animated and sings great.

Honorable mention to Explogasm for being wacky and playing the excellent and very "Sex Dwarf"-y "Soccer Mom Sex".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Last night I saw Q and Not U, Erase Errata, and El Guapo at the Troubador. All three bands were excellent. Both Erase Errata and El Guapo played all new stuff. El Guapo was kind of set up like old Black Dice, with the two knob twiddlers backed up by a great drummer.
I wonder if they weren't on Dischord if they would have more of a presence with the scenesters. I would think, judging from the new stuff, their new album could get some fans.

Erase Errata apparently lost their guitar player and did the first half of this tour with a guy singer, but he's now gone - the main gal explained that she is just learning how to play guitar and sing at the same time, so they had all new songs which were much poppier and were actually great.
Q and Not U were tremendous as always. They are an awesome live band -- incredible drumming, and those dirty synth lines in place of the bass sound so thick.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 22:49 (twenty years ago)

I showed up just in time to see Erase Errata exit the stage, sadly. Q AND NOT U were great though.

Dan Quisenberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Ben, what's with your user name? It's easy, I usually get about 9! 4 salsa baja, 4 verdes, 1 red hot.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Dan, come down to San Diego tonight - Erase Errata, El Guapo, Q and Not U, and Ted Leo are all playing for $5! It promises to be an enjoyable way to celebrate the election of President Kerry.

Spencer, I seem to always get caught in some kind of traffic jam at the Sunset & Fairfax Baja Bar, occasionally involving a couple of c-list celebrities or a bunch of guys who look like they can probably legitimately claim to be ex-members of System of a Down. But yes, Salsa Baja all the way. At least 4.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Ben, I'm there at least once a week (usually on the weekend). If you see me, stop me and we'll run interference for each other. I might have to get some pico too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I really wanted to go to the SD show instead of the LA one, but election night calls. Also, SPARKS.

Dan Quisenberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Q and Not U did a noisy, thick cover of "Born in the USA."

Ted Leo dedicated his last song to his cousin Jeff, who was literally shipped off to Iraq this week.

It was pretty powerful (and very tense at several points, a couple of pre-fight shoving matches broke out).

It was a great show, though I would recommend steering clear of the UCSD Student Pub as a venue in general.

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Brian Wilson was great tonight. Random celeb sightings: Van Dyke Parks (duh), Scott Weiland, Harry Shearer, Penn Gilette, Lindsey Buckingham ... I think I saw Larry David, Al Brooks and Greg Proops but it may just have been Louie Anderson.

Dan Quisenberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 4 November 2004 07:39 (twenty years ago)

For any Air or Dizzee Rascal or TV on the Radio or even Nellie McKay fans - there's a concert at the Avalon, Shortlist Prize concert (it's ONLY music, no prize-giving or anything at the show) on Mon Nov 15th. They play a good number of songs each, unlike Grammys, or whatever

Again, I just don't get this. Place was fine for the Mouse on Mars/Junior Boys show (but I do know alot of people who say this). Crowd was fine too - but again, I'm probably considered part of the 'problem'.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago)

i had my first visit to the KF-LA a few weeks ago. it was pretty empty but i could imagine the complaints if it was crowded. but one thing i forgot was that even the mid-size LA venues are so pro (scores of lighting racks, multiple mic stands available for every instrumentalist, the drum tech purposefully (?) not tightening a kit screw so he could rush out and fix it midsong). do they have a pay to play night there yet?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:38 (twenty years ago)

two main problems with the knitting factory: sound system built for fiddly jazz players, sterile corporate atmosphere. seriously, the place looks like somebody spray-painted the hard rock cafe black or something.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago)

My only KF complaint is in regards to the people who show up and wish to talk over the music. That club seems to have a much douchier clientele than other clubs in that regard - most likely due to its location. I give them credit though for putting on shows with bands that aren't huge draws.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh, also they have a decent parking lot onsite which is nice. But I had no idea that:

A) It was in a minimall
B) That it was so close to all the tourist spots, that lease must be at least $50-75k/month.
C) Also: is that danceclub next door part of the club?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Junior Boys sound was *amazing*, and I'm not sure how anyone could have talked over the *BASS*. Please note that despite going to shows somewhat often, I have very low expectations for live music experiences in general! (i.e. not a venue connoisseur).

C) do you mean the sort of 'ante'-room? That's where I saw ILX's very own Chaki rock.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, G!, the dance club is part of the KF. They used to have a heavily "urban" club on Saturday nights but now I think they have an "indie" one in there. Maybe to compete with "Bang!"?

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Monday, 22 November 2004 23:53 (twenty years ago)

xpost: Hmmm... this was a 80s dance club that the windows face the street on the north side of that block. when i went to KF, i bought my ticket, then went around to the right of the box office and entered the club that way. All of the dance club lingering/action was happening to the left of the box office. Just wondering if they supplement their artier side with a more accessible populous side, I was curious about the business model.

Just wanted to say Vic was OTM with his description of the film there, catch it on a big screen if/when you can.

Anyway, just noting that there's a great Dead Meadow/Jennifer Gentle/Out Crowd show this Friday and FAP plans are afoot.

Also, anyone Fancy a Picnic for Basement Jaxx at the Bowl on July 17th? We could buy up a bunch of the cheap seats. It's with Royksopp and Bossacucanova (who are they?).

Mughal-E-Azam was fantastic.

Well, you can go to the box office during the day. It doesn't open till May 7th, though. It seems like you have to be a subscriber to buy tickets before that.

Has anyone ever been to the club Ivar?

I have a function I have to attend there tonight and I don't know what to expect. I'm sort of clubphobic in many respects (I'm a slob, fat, 30, etc.), but I've been looking forward to this. Excuse my ignorance and allow some stupid questions: Can I wear jeans? What music will they play?

is bean cobian jojo (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Yikes, Ivar on a friday is pretty cheesy. I advise you don't take it too seriously. Just have plenty to drink. You can wear jeans (darker is better and I would avoid athletic shoes although technically they're fine - flipflops are a no-no). The music will be standard top 40 R&B and hip hop. The last friday night I was there was heavily Korean actually.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Spencer... I figured it would be cheesy. Somebody once explained that that stretch of bars along Hollywood there was fairly "bridge and tunnel" on weekends. Chest-bumping frat guys and skanky ladies. (actually, I guess I've observed that often from my Frolic Room stool).
But this is some grad school mixer thing and I figured I should show up - so where should I go that would be fun and non-cheesy, some other time? I've been to Star Shoes and Cinespace once, which were pretty fun I guess. Where else?

is bean cobian jojo (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Really depends on the night. Cinespace Tuesdays, Star Shoes Wednesdays, Forbidden City Thursdays (go before 10:30 pm for easy entry). For celeb spottings, Roosevelt hotell on Thursdays, Mood on Wednesdays and Spider Club on Fridays (I think) - but these are hard to get into unless you're on the list. These are all subject to change and may have changed already!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

What time does your mixer start?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

10pm. Jesus, "Mixer." There's no way this won't be lame.
I've been scared off of all these places because of thing like "the list" (It seemed like the only reason I was given entry to Star Shoes or Cinespace was the fact that I was accompanied by famous people (not meant to be namedroppy, I was going with groups from movies I was working on).
I thought the Roosevelt was some massive clusterfuck nightmare l.a. cliche fest? (impression based only on Defamer articles).

is bean cobian jojo (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 23 September 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Haha. It'll be lame, but there's no reason to be intimidated by bridge and tunnel Ivar on a Friday night.

Star Shoes rarely has any line or wait for entry (and I've never paid a cover there)

Roosevelt on Thursdays is actually really really nice especially if you get there early. It's really beautiful (the pool pattern was painted by David Hockney!), and really nice before it gets crowded. Then, it gets crowded with really attractive people.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm just bitter about the Roosevelt because that used to be the #1 poolhopping spot in town, and now there's no getting near it. Well, thanks for the tips. I'll report back.

is bean cobian jojo (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if anyone here will have the answer, but might as well ask...Does anyone know if Ellen Allien is still playing Avalon on 10/1? The date is listed on her website, but not the venue's, and I can't find any other reference to it. Any idea, Spencer, Ned, anyone?

robots in love (robotsinlove), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't know... Call the venue? Email her?

tylero (tylero), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Looked for it but couldn't find.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Damn, all these shows happening next Saturday! I'll likely be at a friend's birthday party...though hm, that ends early. Mark, drop me a line.

Anyone up for anything else tonight? Will be seeing the glorious Minmae and Azalia Snail at Mr. T.'s Bowl, first time I'll have been there. Apparently it's a no-cover show!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Hey Ned,

Mr. T's Bowl is cool ... be sure to check out the actual bowling alley that still exists behind the back curtain of the stage, if it hasn't changed.

I have an early evening obligation but Minmae sounds great from what I previewed from the website. Thanks! Maybe I'll make it over ... do you know about what time they go on?

declan zimmerman, Friday, 23 September 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

They're headlining so if you show up late my guess is they'll still be on or not yet on, unless there's some sort of late evening cutoff. Sean's a good guy, liked Minmae for years. If you do make it, find me and introduce yourself!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Would be glad to. How would I go about finding you?

declan zimmerman, Friday, 23 September 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Ah right, I forget you're newish here and have not seen the eight million photoshop efforts of me by others.

Me as such.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 September 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Ned, I will come say 'hi' if I make it, which at this point I'm intending to.

declan zimmerman, Saturday, 24 September 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Roxor. Just heard from my friend Aileen down here, we should be leaving in about half an hour so we'll be there...well, sometime!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 September 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Ned, our rollerblade along the new valley busway took way too long. Never made it. But thanks for the intro to Minmae, will explore further. And glad this thread came up, will pull it up next time I'm out, maybe meet some of ya.

declan zimmerman, Saturday, 24 September 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, no worries -- turns out by the time we got there, we had missed Minmae because they were the *first* band on the bill, in complete contradiction to what the lineup on the venue website indicates! Ridiculous. Ended up having lots of chat with Sean, still as cool as ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 September 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes lineups in this town are headscratchingly wierd. Deja vued for me all jazzed about catching Dealersship at Spaceland some time ago, billed as headliner I got there at something like 9:30 and they had just finished. Huh?

declan zimmerman, Saturday, 24 September 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

New rule of thumb for me -- always call in advance to be sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 September 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Ned, did you see a band called Muso?

kurt broder (dr g), Saturday, 24 September 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I saw they were on the bill but I must have missed them -- there were the Sundowners, who were fairly generic bar-band blah with odd bits (like the singer punctuating one song with sudden hyperdramatic wails of "TONIGHT!"), and then some other band after that whose name I forgot to catch. They were allegedly described as math rock, though the one harmonica solo I overheard, along with the rest of the noise, didn't suggest that or anything else interesting.

That's Muso. Math rock, huh? That seems way off base. Pop punk, I'd say.

kurt broder (dr g), Saturday, 24 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that makes more sense. Didn't actually see them -- I was outside talking with Sean and others, he was telling some great tour stories -- but friend Ben caught part of it and said it was good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 September 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Dare I say it - I miss Los Angeles!

youn, Saturday, 24 September 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Where are ya now again, Youn?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

In New Haven. I should clarify that at present I have no intention of moving back. It would be nice to go back to get a haircut and to see my family. But why did I never explore Silverlake or Echo Park?!

youn, Saturday, 24 September 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know of any shows happening on Halloween? I have a buddy who is touring with his new band, RisPaulRic (he was previously in Q and Not U, on Dischord, from D.C. - this new band is him with members of Black Eyes, another late Dischord band), and they need a show that night to glom onto... their sound is pretty all over the place and they could fit in on most any kind of bill. If anyone knows of a scenario where they might be able to hop aboard (a show, or a party, etc.), email me... thanks, guys.

I'll be there. And I may have an extra ticket.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone else see Dungen last night? They were very good but their set had a case of da jamz. I can hear blobby, competent psych freakouts(which bore a little bit of amazing fruit, to be fair) from any old band with no songs to speak of, and they got songs what the heck? I bet KCRW feels cheated. Nobody was in the mood for that Mia Doi Todd, which should not reflect poorly on her, just a fact.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 29 September 2005 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

yep, I was there and had a similar reaction to you. I posted some comments on the noise board, let me go copy and past them

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

ok, here's my review:

Eh, they were kind of weak I thought. I mean, they were good but nothing incredible. When they did the jammy parts it's like they were aiming for Zeppelin and Floyd but came across more like Chocolate Watchband or Vanilla Fudge. Not that that's a bad thing, it was just more cartoony-retro-psych than I expected, like seeing one of the bands on the set of an AIP hippy movie. Their songs are totally great but as a band I didn't think they had the power of say Comets on Fire or Acid Mothers Temple.

Also, I had the realization during the show that I wouldn't care about this band in the slightest if they were from LA although that obviously says more about me than Dungen.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

I saw M83 the night before last at Avalon. I liked a lot of it, and the band was charming (the drummer is pretty unreal), but it seemed like 85% of what I was hearing was pre-recorded. It was initially disorienting, and then sort of annoying. But "Don't Save Us From the Flames" was incredible. What are some other bands that do that playing-to-a-huge-chunk-of-DAT thing?

Stuck to a Seat in the New Beverly (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

xpost after that show they remind me in a way of Manitoba(that they remind me of anyone now is a net loss, a distant cousin to your "band from L.A." formulation), who don't really have songs and know it so they concentrate on doing a fucking psych show to the fucking hilt. They're a blast every time I see them yet I've never been moved even 1% to buy their albums, now I see Dungen (almost) the other way around.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I can see what you're saying. I also thought that the lead singer was kind of weak and that he should sing higher up in a Plant/Ozzy type of register if he really wants to cut through the band. The singer/keyboardist/flute player is supposedly the songwriting genius behind the band right? I actually came away from the show thinking that the guitar player was their hidden strength because all of the cool soaring sounds and great little melodic hooks in their songs are usually in the guitar lines.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

I just looked at pitchfork and caribou and dungen are the top 2 "news" stories respectively. I don't even read it regularly, I guess they got me trained real good.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

anyone going to Bootie L.A. tomorrow at the echo? Some (slightly erroneous) tips for the unitiated(or "unhep" in youth parlance):

So what's a mash-up?
What's a bootleg?
It's pretty much all the same. Also known
as "bastard pop," a bootleg is a song that's
"mashed-up." Usually, this means the vocal
track of one song is mixed over the
instrumentation of another. Using audio
editing software, DJs and mash-up artists
combine different artists and musical genres
to create new and unique songs that are
often greater than the sum of their parts.
Imagine Michael Jackson rocking out with
Nirvana, or Madonna singing with the Sex
Pistols, or Eminem rapping with No Doubt.
Can't imagine that? Then get your ass to
Bootie to hear for yourself!

!!! can they say that?

I saw John Tejada spin Thursday night for exactly one hour, during which the system power went out three times. The crowd consisted of about 50 guys and 8 girls who had shown up with their boyfriends. Nobody really danced, but instead did the chin-scratcher head bob. The DJ following Tejada did a laptop set that dropped the sound levels to a tepid, embarassing volume.

In other words- it SUCKED.

Forget techno and/or house in LA - this isn't the town for it, at all.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Saturday, 22 October 2005 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

I bet I knew 25 out of the 50 people there! My friends said Tejada was good and ther rest of the dj's (8fm was the guy who came on after him) were boring. Which is funny because I caught 8fm at a party a month ago and he blew everybody away. Oh well.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 20 November 2005 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

I made the mistake of catching Ladytron in LA during their last tour. I was truly shocked by how awful they were as live performers. I liked their albums well enough, and went in with a pretty enthusiastic attitude, but not with too many expectations. I was embarrassed for them. They sounded terrible, had no stage presence, and performed like they knew it. They looked frightened on stage, played out of synch, and sang off key. If you like their studio releases, trust me- avoid the live show.

Does anybody else think that The World Famous Aquanet Mix that Power 106 does noon Fridays sits kindly oddly next to the rest of their stuff? Disco, house, freestyle ... I mean, this probably sez more about how poorly I understand hip-hop than anything else, but do the rest of their listeners like this stuff? (It's fabulous, of course, but do Power 106 fans like fabulous?)

I feel compelled to mention that the Fantastic Four (also KPWR) are awesome.

Lukas (lukas), Sunday, 20 November 2005 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

^^^ Ever go to a Quinceneda anywhere in LA during the late 80's? That stuff was like the soundtrack to every backyard party in Boyle Heights or Echo Park or Alhambra. Whenever I went up there to visit cousins it seemed like their neighbors were having a party where the DJ was playing Shannon.

tylero (tylero), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 06:56 (nineteen years ago)

Friday Night. Juan Aitkins is kind of hit and miss as a DJ but Tejada is awesome. I'll be there.

After the fact, but last night I joined in with the Gang Wizard at their show at the Smell. Good times. I also saw Kevin Shields (the band) play.

In retrospect, I shoulda gone to see the Rapture.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Friday, 9 December 2005 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

were "kevin shields" as good as their name?

dan (dan), Friday, 9 December 2005 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

It's Brian Miller and his girlfriend (whose name I shamefully forget) and it was mostly a literal playing of amplifiers (as in shunting them about on the floor). I liked it but it was rather sporadic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 December 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

any other good mailing lists for getting event listings?

I don't seem to be on anything but the Echo list. Which is nice and all...

Next show I'll probably be at in LA is Meat Beat Manifesto/Dalek on February 10, 2006.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be at the Vetiver show on Monday @ the Echo. holla! softly.

Anyone planning on Sisters of Mercy?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to the Film School show at the Troubadour tomorrow (in spite of the fact that they suck eggs through a straw and I'd never give them my money if they didn't have Colored Shadows opening), and then the week after that I'm going to see Akron/Family at the Echo. It will be a beardy, mopey couple of weeks.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 03:25 (nineteen years ago)

I'd never heard of Akron family before the year-end lists. Any good? I've been in a beardy mood lately.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:07 (nineteen years ago)

I'd never heard of them before late last year, but I do like that split with Angels of Light (although I don't listen to it very much) and I've only ever heard good things about their live shows. It seems worth the eight bucks to see if I'll get either a indie rock show of Arcade Fire or Polyphonic Spree proportions or a whole night's worth of unintentional hipster comedy.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

Hey all -- our own Drew Daniel will be in town on Friday, in that Matmos is going to be at the Natural History Museum. True!

http://www.nhm.org/firstfridays/sonic_opening.html

Languis, who are extremely good, will also be performing. I'm definitely going to try and be there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

Q: Why should I attend this event?

A: Lots of reasons! Here are a few:
• To see the collections at the Museum from a different perspective — through music!
• To be the first to check out a new kind of audio exhibit.
• To be part of a unique group individual experience that is at once personal and public.
• You are a fan of one or all of the Sonic Scenery artists or "silent set" performers.
• To expand your repertoire of ways to use an iPod.
• It's fun to be in the Museum after hours, sipping a drink next to the dinosaurs.
• To experience the future of museum communication.

also:

Saturday, March 18, 2006, 11:59 PM
Walt Disney Concert Hall
111 S. Grand Avenue
Los Angeles, CA
(323) 850-2000

Artists:
The Orb; Dntel; John Tejada; Boom Bip

Program:

Explore the boundaries of time, space, and sound at an all-night experience at Walt Disney Concert Hall. UK’s electronic music heroes The Orb will be your tour guide on this progressive space and sound journey through the Hall which kicks off the Phil’s Minimalist Jukebox, a 3-week festival directed by composer John Adams.

On Saturday, March 18, just before midnight, Walt Disney Concert Hall will become the setting for this progressive, ambient musical movement to come to life. Dr. Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann are The Orb – and since their seminal Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld in 1991 to last year’s Okie Dokie It’s The Orb on Kompakt, the Orb have continued to create electronic music from spacious and minimal celestial-techno to spiraling and hypnotic dance floor anthems.

This extraordinary event - which runs from 11:59pm on Saturday, March 18 to 6am on Sunday, March 19 - culminates with the Orb’s live performance in the main auditorium, while special guest artists Boom Bip, Dntel, John Tejada, and visual artists to be announced, will be featured in surrounding spaces and times of the Hall, and will showcase their respective visual and aural minimalist artistic philosophies.

Tickets go on sale Monday, February 6, at 10 a.m.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Saturday, 25 February 2006 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

That lundstrumm party was reaaaaaaaaaly good. There is this pretty distinctive LA techno 'sound' developing around that droid scene. Kind of half minimal and half jackin chicago shit, sorta like that Audion sound. Ken (Appendics Shuffle) was amazing, the Droid crew killed (played my favorite Soundhack songs!!!) and Neil was pretty interesting with his all-hardware set.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 16 March 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

so am i the only sucker signed up for the minimalist jukebox?

arjun (arjun), Friday, 17 March 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

So I went to the Disney Orb thing. Had lotsa fun running around the building. Dntel played mostly directionless hums+clicks, which I enjoyed a lot for some reason. Boom Bip were ... decent post-rock but nothing I wanted to sit and listen to for extended periods. John Tejada played sick sick tech-house, of course. And the Orb...

What to say about the Orb? Everybody else got 45 minutes, they got three hours. They were two bald guys, one German and neat and sort of hyperactive, the other English and looking like a washed-up old punk.

Basically, Thomas Fehlmann played all the good shit using a Powerbook. Alex Paterson would try to mix stuff in using some turntables and cd decks. His beatmatching was absolutely shit for most of the night, one time Fehlmann just cut his sound and went into Because/Before, after which Alex stormed off stage.

Thomas spent the first two hours trying to hold the set together while Alex trainwrecked all over the place, all while nursing Alex's ego (coaxing him back onstage etc.) Apparently he got sick of this, because the last hour was Alex, solo, playing a mediocre dj set.

But there were some great moments: the first part of the set, when Fehlmann got the crowd dancing (including a bunch of people right up front, security was freaked). Me and my friend were thinking Paterson wasn't even going to show up, when we noticed a fat old punk dancing on the side of the stage. He seemed ecstatic.

And when Alex's beatmatching worked, the fusion of his stuff with Fehlmann's was perfect. (In my unkinder moments I wished Fehlmann would just give him a bunch of buttons to press to trigger amusing sound samples, and leave the beats alone.)

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i was there too and basically agree with everything lukas said. tejada was absolutely sick, and could've played all night. i'm tempted to think some of the fehlmann/patterson drama was staged, but who knows? and yes, patterson really let things get messy towards the end, but that seems to be the standard procedure at these sorts of things.

also, the event was made much more enjoyable by the incredibly mellow security staff.

I admit to have wanted to see this. But my mind was porridge.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, I think I asked about this a couple years ago, but I'm serious now: would appreciate referrals to LA-area djs. It's for a birthday party at the brewery. Nice space, and there are going to be a lot of people eager to dance.

Hip-hop, electro-house, actually any house really ... I'm open-minded. You know what's really good, people, use your judgement. Some $ available for a quality selekta.

Reply here if you want, or email me if you prefer: lukasb @ gmail. Thanks.

Fiery Furnaces are also doing an in-store at Amoeba at 6 on Friday. Probably too much hassle for me to get there.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 15 June 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

Amoeba now says the in-store's been cancelled (bummer)... leaving just the show itself tonight.

Has anyone ever actually gone to a thing at the Hear gallery? I tried to go to that Little Radio thing a few weeks ago but was sketched clear off the planet by the neighborhood (I actually used to live a few blocks away back in Thee 03/04 - on 7th by McArthur Park - until I got stuck up one night)

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Friday, 21 July 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

All the freakin' time! I like that place because everything else in LA ends just before 2am, yet the Hear keeps it going til 4. The Kaleidoscope parties are good, as are some of the one-offs I've been to there. They held a Bullet all-nighter there last weekend, but I was in even-sketchier downtown at some Bastille Day party that didn't end til 6.

And I've never had any trouble in Westlake, although once we tried to go after the Fall show and they weren't letting anyone in because I guess some cholos came by and were trying to start shit with security.

I'm actually thinking about going tomorow night, if none of my friends have anything better in mind...

The movie Los Angeles Plays Itself is showing at the Aero in Santa Monica Friday and Saturday. It's well worth seeing and doesn't play too often. And may never be released on DVD because I take it the clips were used largely without permission.

nickn, Friday, 23 February 2007 08:02 (eighteen years ago)

Great, great movie. They were playing it pretty regularly at the Egyptian as of last year-ish. Did they stop doing that? Either way, highly recommended!

Ben Boyerrr, Friday, 23 February 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

So. Matthew Dear Friday. Prototype 909 Saturday. Thoughts? Anyone willing to take the burden of choice out of my hands? (will probably not go to both...)

lukas, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the heads up Nick, Los Angeles Plays Itself was great, love how it was organized to flow so well between the lols and the righteous indignation. If anything, I think it wasn't long enough, the creator has such a grasp on what he's doing he could easily make a 4 part PBS hoonja doonja if they let him.

I moved to Los Angeles about 1.5 years ago.

Finding it rather difficult to meet people, as I have nothing in common with the colleagues. And LA is such a huge place.

Anyway, does anyone know of sites that post upcoming LA shows? I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, but not into going to see bands I do not like, unfortunately. Also, not into the whole typical/generic punk, metal, and hip hop scene, unless they're trying to do something 'different', if that makes sense.

Much appreciated!

Next door to the museum of Jurassic technology is the very excellent center for land use interpretation which displays documentation of human incursions on the landscape from land art to engineering projects. Literally next door

In the Culver city area there is the Wende museum devoted to cold war history in an artful rather than didactic way.

On the palisade above the beach in Santa Monica there is a fun camera obscura inside a senior center. May be closed due to covid.

The Griffith park observatory has some very Jurassic like aspects from its excellent architecture to the long walkway lined with space themed costume jewelry.

The Lifes exhibit as the Hammer museum has some Jurassic qualities in it's effort to appeal to all sensory modalities and weird assortment of stuff.
The dioramas and the bird room at the museum of natural history.

If I think of more I'll pop in again

bryan, Sunday, 20 March 2022 17:45 (three years ago)

black american portraits at LACMA is SO impressive. definitely check it out. LACMA is under construction but the exhibit is open
we ate korean food in some mall restaurant in koreatown, so fucking good
went on a bike ride up the beach from venice to will rogers beach -- "ginger rogers" is the gay beach! maps gave me the heads up on the gay thread. i felt so free on that bike it was amazing
walked up to little ethiopia, so many restaurants
ucla botanical gardens were dope as fuck, meant to go to huntington garden too but LACMA took its spot that afternoon
went to Trulee Hall's exhibit from LA Nomadic Division, https://nomadicdivision.org/exhibition/trulee-hall/, hilarious and fun tbh, i think it may be done now though
biking around in general, the main streets are a little terrifying but cutting through all these residential streets LA is fucking beautiful tbh

i wanted to go out dancing but didn't, the trip was part work for me and w/ jet lag i was so beat.

it was only a few days, i wanna go back more and more and more

oh that's pretty much my dream lineup, lacma, koreatown and ginger rogers. that black american portraits exhibit was at the top of our list for the trip we didn't take last december. la is the best city in the us it's true. keep dreaming of going back for a vacay but skint lately, maybe it'll happen soon though.

I took a spectacular hike a couple weeks ago in Los Leones Canyon.

biking around in general, the main streets are a little terrifying but cutting through all these residential streets LA is fucking beautiful tbh

oh yeah, this time of year is probably perfect weather. i skated residential streets from echo park to amoeba and parts of it are like not even being in the middle of LA.
I had a super Bibimbap in K-town once, too. Forget the name, but was a VERY large restaurant

damn I didn't even schedule LACMA but maybe I'll go after the Academy Museum depending on how tired I am/if there's tix available

maybe but I wanna see the Miyazaki exhibit

Stevie D(eux), Thursday, 31 March 2022 20:35 (three years ago)

The Miyazaki exhibit is interesting / worth the price of admission if you're into his stuff. I agree the museum itself is... not good. The whole thing needs to be reconceptualized or something.

it’s hit or miss and tbh i was underwhelmed by the Miyazaki exhibit. the sci-fi montage rotunda room was my favorite part

So I have a ticket into the former Bob Hope airport and am sposed to be there for a week one month from now…but I am of course wondering if I should cancel in light of BA2… I guess if someone would care to talk about their recent experiences traveling to LA and whether the mask compliance is good there, whether you felt OK about outside vs. inside socializing …it seems like a lot of ILxors went there recently, according to this thread…

Cases are indeed rising a bit, but not as high as (say) SF at the moment (or especially parts of the East Coast, as I understand). Of course who knows what things will look like in a month.

Mask "compliance," as in wearing? (they're not required most places indoors in LA County anymore), is moderate to low I guess, depending on the area/neighborhood. If cases increased significantly, I have no doubt the county would quickly re-impose the ordinance, as that's how they roll.
