Poison -- a thread for the lovers and the haters

Because apparently they didn't have a thread before about their entire career, though Dan's take on "Talk Dirty to Me" is exemplary and contains much wonder.

Anyway, I bring this up partially because of an interview that Metal Sludge has just done with Ric Browde, the Ross Robinson of his day (well, not really, that was Mutt Lange, and Browde fully agrees), who produced Look What the Cat Dragged In among other things. It's a freakin' great interview through and through about all sorts of glam-era and after stuff (Browde loves Turbonegro and is bored by the Darkness, so I like him already), and he has things to say like this:

--
2. You produced Poison?s ?Look What The Cat Dragged In.? What do you remember about recording that album? What comes to mind?

Recording Poison was interesting because I felt I was doing a great service to frustrated wannabe vocalists around the world by opening the singing profession up to those who were tone deaf and cannot sing , which had previously been barriers to aspiring singers.
--

But hey, I like 'em, and there for once Dan and I differ. So what do YOU think of these, the legends (here in smaller than legendary size)?

Mutt Lange is way more talented than Ross Robinson!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I agree -- I mean more in the sense of 'signature, inescapable sound of an era'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they are great...esp. on Look what the cat dragged in...

at that time, they are so resolutely bubblegum that I find it hard to people don't like them...no machoness to get in the way of all the pop hooks...also, I luv CC Deville as a lead player, much more tuneful and less wanky than lots of the era, and when he was wanky it had a certain "hey ma look what I can do!" gooniness that is infectious....like he didn't take it seriously enough to really think of it as anything more than making cool noises....and CC's voice! I mean best speaking voice ever! He sounds like some cigarrette inhaling, grizzled 50s New Yawk diner waitress! (and looks like one too!)

Also, I was in Jr. High at the time and have many fond memories of all the girls in my grade dancing to them at school dances. they were really good for that.....

All this said, they got worse and worse every album, more "serious" and less fun and they thought they were like a real band or something...with some exception like "every rose" and the gooooorgeous and melancholy springsteen thang "fallen angel" (which no one seems to like as much as I do)...

Search "Bret Michaels". I may have done a Poison thread involving Mel C some time ago.

Rikki Rocket is the man. As pointed out on another thread (on ILE i think), he took the whole pretty look on the front cover of Look What The Cat Dragged In and then took it one more step.

I'll profess a liking for Def Leppard's Pyromania in this thread. And Skid Row. but that's it. Until I think of something else embarrassing later. Not that Skid Row is, cuz it's not.

Uh, no. (pun intended)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps that's because you all profess to liking everything

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, this guily pleasures thing has been discussed on some other threads...you can search them if you'd like.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That would involve me reading more threads. No, no, and no.

So in summation, um, Poison: no good.

Thank you for casting your votes.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, it's completely unintelligible to talk about the New York Dolls when someone brings up dressing in women's clothing! That's sooooooooooooooooooooo far off the mark.

By the way, in order to be completely unironic from now on, you might want to not call somebody unintelligible in a sentence where you use incorrect grammar: IT'S 'YOU'RE', YOU FUCKTARD!

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I initially thought Poison was an all girl rawk band and I was seriously bummed when I found out they were boys. But they still rocked.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

They rocked harder than taffy.

uh, did it ever occur to you that db and myself may have actually have heard of the NY Dolls and listened to them and be quite aware of their influence on the look of glam rock and might just actually want to talk about Poison without some toolbox bothering us? Fucking find a NY Dolls thread if you want to talk about them....or fuck there's prob. even five threads on solo David Johansen by now if that's yr bag...

god, you have this way of making these completely banal and cliched observations and then acting like you're the first person on earth that's ever said it....

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Matt, you're a complete idiot. Yea, I REALLY thought I was dropping an obscure reference when I mentioned the New York Dolls on a site perpetuated with writers of Allmusicguide and fans of allmusicguide, who probably have given them enough coverage end over end.

You, like the other peons on this board, are really good at drawing inferences that aren't there and making stupid assumptions. But keep on, you're amusing me. :)

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, no one was talking about "thanking" anybody in the context of the discussion and you were and are being completely annoying and insulting for seemingly no reason at all, hence the 'unintelligible' comment. Spelling mistakes are not unintelligible, since you obviously figured out that I meant "you're". I still can't figure out your thanking the Abe Vigoda/New York Dolls comment.

Seriously, uh, get off the crack.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If your definition of troll="someone who likes entirely different music than me", then by all means :)

It's easy to categorize and thus distance yourself from something, right? Well, carry on then, if your ignorance makes you feel better.

Also, please note the mods are collectively well aware of him and will likely be acting accordingly soon. DB, Matt, let it go. Uh is a boring, lying fool, no more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(it's hard to tell which troll is posting under which new anon alias these days... can someone clue me in offboard?)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, since you're dense, I'll break it down. I said the "Abe Vigoda" thing to reference the zillions of bands who thank random celebrities in their liner notes just to be funny, which was one possible motive a band could do something like that.

I mentioned the New York Dolls as an aside, since they did the whole sleaze-drag thing earlier than Poison did the whole OMG WE'RE WOMEN thing. But since you all take everything entirely too seriously here, I'll figure you missed that too.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just kinda sad to see this, that's all. I hope someone is about to get the help he/she/it deserves.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, acting accordingly, eh? Why don't you go and delete the account already, then, if it makes you happy? Cuz all I'm doing is responding to the silly elitist bullshit you and your ignorant peons spout forth.

fyi, this is the only nick I've used in the last four days other than "censored" to my knowledge.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, James Slone was right about this place. No wonder this board couldn't handle someone like him.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Gabb, if you have to own one non-hits Poison record, it should be the first one above. It's pretty solid all the way through. Open Up And Say Aaaah... has some good songs, but M@tt was right... they become more of a "great singles/terrible filler" band as far as albums go.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah...Cat Dragged In has remarkably little filler...I haven't heard it in a decade probably, but there are only two songs I can't think of just by seeing the names on allmusic (Blame it On You and #1 Bad Boy)...that's a pretty good testament to their catchiness.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Recording Poison was interesting because I felt I was doing a great service to frustrated wannabe vocalists around the world by opening the singing profession up to those who were tone deaf and cannot sing , which had previously been barriers to aspiring singers.

I think this is sorta key to the appeal. And maybe where the Dolls comparison breaks down - they aspire in different directions? It's what they have in common with Jay-Z?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob, I dig you sometimes & I don't call you a troll, but you are being an asshole on this thread. Nobody's being "elitist" (I think you brought that baggage here) - you brought up stuff that we've covered & discussed to death, and then said "no, I won't go read that stuff." It's like showing up for Spanish II and saying "right I skipped Spanish I, so we can't actually use any vocabulary. Now let's talk preterite tense!" Most people here - not without having thought the question over a lot - don't believe that guilty pleasures exist. If they do, oughtn't you feel guilty about listening to rock at all, when opera is "demonstrably" "better"? But again, the reason you got called on the carpet on this thread is that we have discussed the holy fucking shit out of this question many times. And when somebody sez "check the archive," it's a friendly thing, not a "go do your homework" thing. But at the same time, it's only good & right to ask yourself: "Am I raising a question that's already been covered and will only serve to slow shit down?"

So, um, Rob, mellow out a little, all right? Damn.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all kind of a blur after "Talk Dirty To Me," Matt, plus I don't really remember "Play Dirty" that well either. The opening three is brilliant though.

here's what I think about Dirty Rotten. They're a lot more diverse both conceptually and structurally.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If we sidetrack on Warrant we shall miss the sense of our mission. ;-) Anthony has a happy thread here.

John, I'd appreciate a private e-mail if ya could about uh, in that some input for the mods would be welcome if you know him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, Ned. I would just like to note that both Poison and Nirvana have videos where the drummer does a giant spit take, but only in Poison's do they freeze the frame and crayola all over it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, John, unless I'm misinformed, I thought that was only a small part of the whole fray (the refusing to read the other thread.)

and actually, the reason I didn't read it is because I wasn't here to start an argument over the "existence" of guilty pleasures because first off, I find it a silly issue to begin with--they DO exist for those who allow them to, and vice versa. It isn't some universal truth. It was an example of a potential overanalysis of something I never meant to debate in the first place. I didn't give two shits over than to mention one of those bands was a "guilty pleasure". It's not something that needs geeking on.

As for the rest of the thread, I'm only being half-serious half the time, and nobody seems to get when that is, no matter how obvious I make it. And I'm hardly the only one who acts in such a manner. And it's humorous that all the vile responses came to my dismissal of Poison, which was rather tame, in contrast to Alex, who called them complete and utter shit.

Anywho, though, I don't have much use for a board like this anyway. If I'm around in the next week, I am, and if I'm not, I'm not.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I would also like to compliment Poison for wanting to look like attractive women rather than donning the secretaries-from-hell drag queen garb that bands like Twisted Sister and '80s-era Kiss wore.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

my own take on Poison is that while Ric Browde may have made them stars, yet must I vilify and pooh-pooh Ric Browde, because that production sound is awful, yet it came to define that whole period what with the tin-meets-plastic guitars & the hey-ma-I'm-playin-in-an-empty-indoor-swimming-pool drums, and so even though Poison have their charms, it were better for this world if Mr. Browde had left them to flounder in their own lack of ability, &c

xpost yeah Rob it was a small part, but key: that kinda thing rubs people the wrong way! and then they respond accordingly, and you call them "elitist," which is an insult, and wacky hijinx ensue, and then before you know it there's pictures of Ma$e and animated gifs of the Hammer everywhere

also if you don't know the story of how Alex was greeted when he first came here, it's worth learning

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Slight x-post with John's last point here:

And it's humorous that all the vile responses came to my dismissal of Poison, which was rather tame, in contrast to Alex, who called them complete and utter shit.

The explanation for that is because Alex, who has been here for three years, posted in a self-consciously hyperbolic style about that and many things, and was indeed extremely confrontational first time around, but has proven himself over time to be a good feller through and through. There wouldn't be all the love for him, his wife and their baby on the appropriate thread for his newborn on ILE if he hadn't shown that.

You're a new poster, so directly comparing your situation and his would be unfair. But your claims of being 'obvious' are not going over well, at all, and the fault of that is yours, when every response you to give any post is mockery or condescension about how you were misunderstood. It's boring, like I said.

You can either choose to contribute something to this board -- I'll grant a couple of posts where you have -- or you can keep standing on your soapbox being incredibly self-satisfied about everything and making fun of just about everyone for not being you. Which would you rather?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

as I say I kinda dig The Man Called Uh but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that he won't grok Ned's mojo just now

You are an island, J0hn. An army of one.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Anywho, though, I don't have much use for a board like this anyway. If I'm around in the next week, I am, and if I'm not, I'm not.

See, 90% of your posts on "this board" have been basically "this board sucks". You sound like an aggressive drunken homeless person who just decided to take out your anger at the nearest convenience store.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

See, I think you all have unfairly represented me.

Half the threads here involve people going at each other and saying "this sucks", and "that sucks". Now, saying something "sucks" is a matter of opinion, and that's obvious. However, saying certain things sucked my first few days here drew me a lot more ire than others.

Then in the Beastie Boys thread, I admit I stutter-stepped a bit because I got frustrated by Rollie's continual presumptions (after one post he assumed I hated all gangsta rap, and then wrote a 3 paragraph essay where twice he insinuated I was a racist despite no indications of such BS at all, simply because our rap tastes differed and I said Jay-Z sucked.)

If any of you all think I have an ego, that'd be a laugh riot. If you met me in real life, you'd notice my inability to look people in the eye, my stuttered manner of speaking, my dour expression, and how sometimes it looks like it pains me to smile. That's me. Not 'depressed', just rather unconfident and self-esteem deficient. If you think I've been hard on some of you all, just imagine how I am to myself 7 days a week. But no, I don't think you'd be able to pick me out of a crowd in real life. I'm fairly mellow, a little overanxious at times, but non-confrontational. I have a lot of insight into myself...and a lot of it bothers me.

However, both here and the real world, if I feel threatened, I get cat-like. Sometimes a little overboard.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, I think we're all familiar -- VERY familiar -- with differences in personality online and offline, and how somebody who can be extremely friendly, garrulous even, online can offline be extremely quiet, shy, whatever you'd like to say. And many of us here have freely admitted to feelings, moments and full bouts of depression, and I am one of them. You don't want to be me in my moments of mental self-laceration, at all.

So I'll grant you that, with understanding. But I draw a very VERY clear distinction between your claims of feeling misrepresented on one thread and the, to be blunt, shit-stirring you've done elsewhere. That isn't because you were cornered in most instances, you came in dismissive, you continued being dismissive, you endlessly claimed you were being misunderstood and everyone else somehow lacked the intellectual ability to notice when you were being clever.

If you want to act that way all the time, get used to being regarded that way all the damn time. If you feel you have to blow up every damn time someone disagrees with you, then get used to being seen as someone who can only do that, every time, any time, ALL the time.

Otherwise, chill the fuck out. I'm not saying this because I'm mad at you, but because I'm mad at the situation. These boards, for all their frustrations and problems and more, thrive because they have value for those who post here, even if only on a few threads for a few folks. We welcome it as an oasis in the Net where there's too much stupid shit already. If you dropped the confrontationalism and took several deep breaths, you might realize you've found something that's infinitely better for everyone when not every post or every opinion is a trigger for lashing out or defense.

The choice, like I said, is yours.

The problem with that is I'll wind up being more prolific than Merzbow.

Uh, it takes a little while to get the protocol, the etiquette of this particular board, and also to understand individual posters' attitudes and personalities, and consequently how to react to them. I still have trouble sometimes after more than a year. The reason you get shit is b/c you clearly don't know how to act and that's looked upon w/ immediate suspicion by posters who take this stuff seriously, have been here forever and have long ago outgrown/grown tired of the dorky bulletin board shit that goes on, and want to get to the good stuff. Now, you'll say, "oh well this is a public freaking internet board and I can do whatever I want," etc, which is true but it'll be a pain in the ass.

Poison covers "Rock and Roll All Night" by Kiss. It starts:

Bret: Misssster Rocket?
Ricki: (plays the opening drum intro)
Bret: Thank yooooou!

What makes it great is the ridiculously hairmetal 80's rockstar affectation to his voice. God, Bret Michaels really was the worst frontman ever.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

People will lie to you, tell you 80s hair metal was all about fun and rockin', and that Poison are the epitome of that spirit. I call bullshit. The best hair ballads all evoke glazed-eye dreaminess -- the intense yearning of "Hysteria," the smoldering passion of "I Remember You," the list goes on. What is Poison's power ballad? "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" -- a trite chord progression underlying crappy cowboy cliches sung by a truly horrible frontman. That's only the tip of the iceberg. Poison are a limp, lifeless, going-through-the-motions-of-"fun", empty, hollow shell of a band. Their playing is weak, their songs are weak, and they are, indubitably, TEH SUCK.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

If there was any way of knowing for sure what they'd be like today it's possible that I would have liked Poison back then, but I was too young to see it coming.

In the '80s, I just saw Poison as a vacuous, cartoonish pop-metal band (and I like that sort of thing when it's good, but Poison at their most okay were only "good" with the scarequotes and disclaimers attached). Having watched the Behind the Music though, I get a nice chuckle that they've mutated from cartoons into underground comix -- they're basically all the faggy old trash-punkers befouling the barstools on Avenue B on a given weeknight, lisping their way through a progress report on "the program." It's endearing as hell.

The secret winner on the Less Than Zero soundtrack is Roy Orbison singing "Life Fades Away," which was either written or cowritten by Glenn D. It actually ends the film and while I'm sure I would laugh at the movie if I saw it again -- I picked up the soundtrack because I had actually seen it in theaters on first release, god help me, and it was the first CD I had ever bought! -- I remember the song working very well in context.

A Los Angeles judge sentenced the Poison guitarist to 80 days behind bars after he pleaded no contest Monday to driving under the influence and causing injury.

DeVille, whose real name is Bruce Johannesson, was also slapped with five years' probation, ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and had his drivers license revoked for one year.

The hair band survivor, now 43, got into trouble back on Aug. 24, when he backed out of his girlfriend's home and slammed into a parked car, causing airbags to deploy in his vehicle and injuring his companion. Police later determined that DeVille had been intoxicated.

Rikki Rockett, drummer for US rock band Poison, has been arrested for rape in Los Angeles.

Rockett - real name Richard Ream - was held after a woman filed a complaint claiming she had been raped at a casino in Neshoba, Mississippi.

A police spokesperson said prosecutors were deciding whether the star would be sent back to Mississippi.

The 46-year-old musician, who was unavailable for comment, has been released from police custody.

The band, who are best known for releasing the song Talk Dirty to Me, was founded in the 1980s by Rockett and singer Bret Michaels.

(I feel for the guy with his broken nose and all, but I hope he'd agree that if you are going to break a nose in a mishap like this, it might as well be as hilarious as possible for everyone else's enjoyment)

Also it should happen at the Tonys. The lead singer of Poison should get injured at the Tonys

LOS ANGELES – Bret Michaels is in critical condition suffering from a brain hemorrhage, his publicist said Friday. Joann Mignano confirmed a report on People magazine's website Friday that said the former Poison frontman was rushed to intensive care late Thursday after a severe headache. The report said doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem.

Mignano said tests are being conducted and that no further information was available.

The 47-year-old reality TV star had an emergency appendectomy last week after complaining of stomach pains. He said on his website that though the surgery "has taken its toll," doctors expected him to make a full recovery.

Michaels starred on the VH1 dating show "Rock of Love" and is a contestant on Donald Trump's NBC reality show, "The Celebrity Apprentice."

Trump said in a statement Friday that he was "deeply saddened" to hear of Michaels' condition.

"He's a great competitor and champion, and I hope he will be fine," Trump said.

"The 47-year-old reality TV star" i know Poison are pretty forgettable but c'mon now, give him some respect while he goes through this.

Talk Dirty To Me is pretty decent but man this is a terrible band. Bret Michaels is a corny enough frontman to make Mark Slaughter look like Marc Bolan.

Oh my god look what the feral cat that lives in the backwoods where Mandy was a documentary dragged in.

This is what C.C. Deville from Poison looks like now?! He looks like he's in a band I would possibly go see?? pic.twitter.com/zTTsH8iPtw

kinda cool to see from someone who theoretically has a lot more fear of pushback from his audience than most

“What we were doing was a social, cultural movement,” Rockett recalled. “It really set America and the world on fire in a lot of ways”
