ILM taught me to hate music.

sux2bu (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

I hear that. I now have a crew of paunchy music critics in plastic horn-rimmed glasses and too-tight teeshirts slouched on a couch in a rec room of my mind snorting "haha lame" whenever I hear a song and think I like it. Not their problem, "obv," but it's why I don't look at it anymore.

ILM listmaking = new levels of stupidity

every dance music list ever = "i haven't actually HEARD any of the records anybody else is talking about, but let me just big up the CD i bought this afternoon, because my sense of personal worth is so low, i'm not sure if i like it or not - tim? phil? do i like this?"

I still really wish that one guy wasn't wearing a Cardinals shirt.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 17 September 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

trolls never seem to accept anything

one thing I do like about ILM: on the most interesting artists, consensus is _rare_, everyone has a different favorite album, & everyone's convinced about their take... which is how it should be. but in the past, there'd be only a handful of comprehensive written overviews and you'd be stuck there thinking 'does EVERYONE think that's their best album?' and no, nope, it turns out that's actually only Greil's or John Schaeffer's or Kyle Gann's or who-the-fuck-ever's opinion. and this is really good, reassuring information to know.

dancing: on the ceiling vs in the dark

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 September 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

dancing on the ceiling is a superhero feat, and therefore kick-ass.

dancing in the dark presumably means you're either dancing in a dark room by yourself, or dancing whilst blind, or both. fucking sad. obviously dancing on the ceiling wins.

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 17 September 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

random google morons who get all uppity because someone is hating on their 12th favourite indie rock band and list threads are the things that annoy me, moron-wise. I kind of blame gier for the list thread thing, though no doubt it was someone else who kicked that one off. I think there's the same amount of good stuff there as there always was, but the s/n ratio has got a lot worse recently.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 17 September 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

i've said it before and i'll say it again, ilm has made me way way listy. i never really cared about lists before. i wasn't much of a list-maker in that analobsessive rockcritiky way. i never thought about my top ten favorite boogie woogie artists or whatever. when in rome, i suppose...

i hate ilm too sometimes. mostly cuz i spend too much time on it. that brings out some nice self-loathing. but every time i see another message board/forum on the web devoted to music in some way i thank my lucky stars that i don't have to deal with the other morans out there in the real world! i am used to ilx morans.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 17 September 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

I think your hunch / theory has some truth to it. (i.e. that 'theory' is effectively a language game in which knowing the rules, and participating in the conversation is central, and the actual names / terms in circulation could be switched for something else -- e.g. football / soccer without much changing, except that 'theory' talkers maybe share some kind of sense that what they're talking about is 'important' in a different way from the way football talk is 'important' [left unexplained here: important TO someone; important to the future of the universe; etc. different conversations will have different answers, clearly, which is why people take part in them, maybe, and could we explore the differences starting from this question?]) I don't think it's the whole truth, but I would have to think a bit before I could put my finger on what my reserveations are...

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

mark i wanted to ask you if you've seen "the aristocrats" and what you thought of it. (i haven't)

ILX isn't like one joke told 100 ways, it's 100 jokes told in one boring way.

n million threads about dance/reggae/rap w/ people endlessly restating a few other people's views, w/o generally even thinking about it or bothering to know the music.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

it's like ILX has spawned this whole monstrous group of people who are more comfortable talking about things like "movements" "styles" and "genres" than they are talking about a fucking CD or song or artist or something.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

anyway, the answer is august 2001

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I've never understood the hate directed at list threads. They're just fun time-wasters that don't need to be taken seriously. Top 100 songs with baby talk in the chorus? Why not? They're like the silly games you'd play in the car as a kid when you'd be on a long drive, except now you're grown up and it's the internet.

I'm a list freak but obv. lists != informed discussion.

n million threads about dance/reggae/rap w/ people endlessly restating a few other people's views, w/o generally even thinking about it or bothering to know the music.

This is why I generally avoid the big clusterfuck threads and prefer the smaller threads where ten people shoot the shit about Wolfgang Voigt.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 17 September 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

it's like ILX has spawned this whole monstrous group of people who are more comfortable talking about things like "movements" "styles" and "genres" than they are talking about a fucking CD or song or artist or something.

This predates ILX though, no? I mean, what about literary critics who want to talk about "textuality" or "authorship" or whatever instead of actual specific books?

i was gonna say the same thing about ILM

Jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

aristocrats not as good as hoped. when the entire point of the movie is about what you learn about a comedian from their version of the joke, then you edit the hell out of everyone's rendition so at no point do you actually hear any comedian tell the joke from start to finish seems odd. Taylor Negron wins for funniest interviewee, though.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

they don't present their versions in full?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

as an info service and a way to meet people who like some of the music I like ILM is pretty good, not that there are legions of new people coming in these days, but I don't really get the hate for ILM. If it gets boring I tend not to read it, the last week or two has been a bit quiet. I suppose I don't use it for serious argument/discussion anymore, I just read whatever the latest few threads about dance music are.

Mantra ft Linda Oliviera - Lullaby
Groove Armada - Superstylin'
Lemon Jelly - Come
Playtime Toons - The Shaker Song
Different Gear vs The Police - When The World Is Running
Azido Da Bass - Dooms Night (Timo Maas Mix)
Bob Marley vs Funkstar Deluxe - Sun Is Shinin'

re: aristocrats, suprisingly no...I kept waiting for even ONE version, maybe what they decided was the definitive version, say Gilbert Gottfried's appearance at the Heffner roast or Bob Saget's lengthy and dirty dirty version, but nope. By all means it's worth watching, but it would've made a great 50 minute dvd or something.

he's been in every movie and tv show ever. I saw a stand-up thing once and it was more like a demented spaulding grey monologue.

I used to get him confused with Robert Romanus, who played Mike Damone in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Negron was only the pizza delivery guy in Fast Times.

I also used to get him mixed up with Dean Cameron from Summer School and Hot Dog and also a funny failed tv show where he was an alien.

http://www.deancameron.com/

Negron was the mailman in Better Off Dead.

Biography for

The bell hooks interview in the Research Angry Women book was pretty good. Avital Ronell struck me as one of those academics who get excessively punked out & after more and more "transgressive" fields of study to try and compensate for the fact that they're in the most conservative institutional culture this side of the Army..

My college housemates gave me that book for a birthday present junior year. I don't think that was very tactful of them.

See, when I found ILM, I was used to reading shit in "mojo" magazine & stuff like that where it was all about how great artists from "the canon" were, and everything else just got pushed out of the way.

I was amazed @ ILM, because "the canon" was like not on the map, and no-one gave a shit about it. That's part of why I liked it so much str8away. Now, you know "construct a follow-up to abbey road from beatles solo rekkids" fucking hell.

there's always 1 song i fucking LOVE!!!
2-3 I love, but don't fucking love.
a handful i really like.
1 I'm not sure about.
1-2 I don't like.

this is every strokes album. but I love them anyway. they are consistent in both pleasing and dissappointing me. couldn't ask for more.

but are there any artists similiar to Duo 505 you'd recommend? i really like that blend of shoegaze and hard beats. or any B Fleischmann works and the like recommeded?

Kudos ahead of time. thank you.

I'd vote for Jess to be reinstated as ILE mod in a heartbeat. I mean seriously, someone was going on on some thread there about how they were glad ILe wasn't a "jess-friendy" place or wtfe, and I thought fuck that. Jess-friendly ILE would be about 1000 x better.

1000 less threads

same thing

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 22 December 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Agreed!

People should be very, very happy that I just abdicated my position as ILE mod as opposed to deleting everything in sight; Jess's fine work today would have been peanuts in comparison. (As it was, on my way out I did go ahead and delete two threads that featured an inordinate amount of creepy badgering-of-Ally that had been repeatedly defended by asshats as not being deletable because they'd posted to it.)

dan what was the creepy badgering? was it middle-aged britishes mildly asking for more nude pics?

gear (gear), Thursday, 22 December 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

No it wasn't. IIRC it was some fairly personal posts from ally, and a stupid bullshit flamewar. I think MC was the instigator of that. I was originally anti-deletion b/c ally's posts were highly thought-provoking, but Dan did the right thing.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 22 December 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

'Twan (miccio), Friday, 23 December 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

Some people tape a concert on a four-track and sell it; others, like Kanye West, need months in the studio to make a single record. Some people really are geniuses, and others just rant on message boards. We understand these factors, yet we don't let them nudge the price tag. If we really loved and respected our music, we would cough up the dough to prove it.

Chris Dahlen is the drummer for Gay Dad.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 23 December 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

I know I haven't been here as long as y'all and I can see how it gets really old and repetitive, but I'm kind of hypnotized/totally crushed out by the Marissa thing- Pashmina try to be merciful, "marissaworld is a peaceful planet, don't use your Death Star technology for evil" etc.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

I can see the old and repetitive thing too, but I don't really understand what half the animus is about here. There's lots of threads/posters I think are pointless and stupid. I ignore them, or if I'm drunk or hungover and bitter I might argue with them. I wouldn't presume to start telling people what it's okay to talk about, or what their personality should be. I've been meaning to stop wasting my time on ILX for a while - under the prob'ly mistaken assumption that I might do something more useful with it. Well this little military coup is the push I needed, I think. Cos however understandable, and I have nothing against you guys, something here feels a bit too much like playground bullying to me. Peace.

Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 23 December 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

did you delete the rubies thread yet?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 December 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Drew, I don't have any particular gripe w/Marissa, actually I like her music, & listen to it from time to time. Personally, I do find the discourse on the threads about/by her periodically gets unpleasantly close to bedlam-style entertainment through taunting the mentally ill.

From a moderation viewpoint the problem is that threads about/by her have tended to over-proliferate, I think mainly because she seems to look on ILM as a blog or something, and she tends to start a new thread everytime a new thought enters her head. When it gets to 8 consecutive marissa threads showing up in quick sucession, as happened recently, then that tends to start clogging up the board & becomes a nuisance for other posters. Personally, I've tended towards trying to keep it all in one thread, other moderators have taken the approach of deleting on sight. Trying to keep it all in one thread hasn't really been successful, I must admit.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 23 December 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I generally don't mind noisy stuff, but Lightning Bolt have just always majorly rubbed me the wrong, while I still think it's pretty hard to refute that B&S write some great pop songs.

Dude, be careful; one of my coworkers woke up one morning with his tonsils so swollen that the left side of his throat was pressed up against the back of his tongue and his uvula. He had to stay in the hospital for 5 days before the swelling went down to the point where he could drink fluids.

I got four T.Rex discs in the mail the other day - The Slider, Zinc Alloy..., Dandy In The Underworld and a singles comp (A and B sides), each a two-CD set. I put the singles comp into my iPod, but it probably won't stay for long. The others are going straight to the used CD store.

Walking to the LCD Soundsystem show, I paused at the door of the nearby bar where Japanese psych band Green Milk From The Planet Orange were playing the same night, reading the schedule to see if I could somehow catch both shows. (No dice.) I left the doorway without having spoken, amid indulgent chuckles from the door person & misc. others: "Yeah, 'Green Milk From The Planet Orange' ... pretty weird, huh!" Normally I could give a shit -- the dissonance between common assumptions about my taste and the reality of it can come in handy for scaring people -- but once in a while I'm like GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK. So young folks who attend psych/noise shows, remember: when you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME. ...There. I feel better.

"'What's to-day.' cried Harvell, calling downward to Jon, who perhaps had loitered in to look about him.

'Eh.' returned Jon, with all his might of wonder.

'What's to-day, my fine fellow.' said Harvell.

'To-day.' replied Jon. 'Why, Christmas Day.'

'It's Christmas Day.' said Harvell to himself. 'I
haven't missed it. The Spirits have done it all in one night.
They can do anything they like. Of course they can. Of
course they can. Hallo, my fine fellow.'

'Hallo.' returned Jon.

'Do you know the Poulterer's, in the next street but one,
at the corner.' Harvell inquired.

'I should hope I did,' replied the lad.

'An intelligent boy.' said Harvell. 'A remarkable boy.
Do you know whether they've sold the prize Turkey that
was hanging up there -- Not the little prize Turkey: the
big one.'

'What, the one as big as me.' returned Jon.

'What a delightful boy.' said Harvell. 'It's a pleasure
to talk to him. Yes, my buck.'

'It's hanging there now,' replied Jon.

'Is it.' said Harvell. 'Go and buy it.'

'Walk-er.' exclaimed Jon.

'No, no,' said Harvell, 'I am in earnest. Go and buy
it, and tell them to bring it here, that I may give them the
direction where to take it. Come back with the man, and
I'll give you a shilling. Come back with him in less than
five minutes and I'll give you half-a-crown.'

Jon was off like a shot. He must have had a steady hand
at a trigger who could have got a shot off half so fast.

'I'll send it to Cutty's.' whispered Harvell,
rubbing his hands, and splitting with a laugh. 'He shan't
know who sends it. It's twice the size of Ian. Chaki never made such a joke as sending it to Cutty's will be.'"

So what whas the idea of the html behind "reckoning"s post-fest last night? If you had images off, it showed a link to what I guess must have been a pic of JW (it was a dead link - NSFWhttp://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d148/jonwilliamspwn/JonWilliams.jpg NSFW)

If you had images on, you didn't see anything except some vague message related to the thread title.

Any ideas?

Weezer Singer Continues Vow of Celibacy
NEW YORK (AP) - Weezer lead singer Rivers Cuomo is continuing his celibacy past his self-declared deadline.

The 35-year-old frontman earlier vowed to remain celibate for two years. Although that deadline expired six months ago, Cuomo still doesn't expect to jump back in the sack anytime soon.

"It's been two and a-half years now, actually," Cuomo tells Blender magazine in its new issue, on newsstands Tuesday. "The vow is over, but I wanted to keep cruising."

Though he's a lead singer for a popular rock band, the bespectacled Cuomo says it's not difficult to manage restraint.

"Abstinence doesn't require as much self-discipline anymore," he says. "We never had any serious groupies, anyway. Our generation got screwed."

Cuomo's vow makes Weezer's 2005 music video for "Beverly Hills" somewhat unusual; it was filmed at the Playboy mansion with dozens of Playboy models and Weezer fans.

Earlier this year, Weezer released their fifth album, "Make Believe."

Cuomo is also pursuing a degree in English literature from Harvard University, for which he has one semester left.

Oh, I rarely heckle myself. But I do enjoy it. Not if its overdone, true. But I like the way it deflates the typical show dynamic a bit. My favorite example, I guess, is at the end of some bands set and before they went offstage to wait out the inevitable encore, some guy yelled "play another song you fucking faggots!" Admittedly not witty, but it made me laugh. Now that I think about it, I only really like it when there's a roomful of people all rapt over some sensitive soul up there sharing their intelligence and genius or whatever. I like seeing that deflated.
