i was given the promise of a psych orgasm like no other. really tho there are shite tho', who here is into them, what do u like about them? is avatar a shitty departure?

back to 'heavier than a death in the death in a family' then

Michael B (Michael B), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:24 (eighteen years ago)

I really love 'Blue Cathedral' but don't care for 'Avatar' at all. Haven't heard the earlier material.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

Avatar is their most conventional release and so is probably their least hard rocking. But it's a solid record, in my opinion.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:31 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i mean i cant think of another band where the hype over what they are has fallen so desperatly short. which annoys me so. 'avatar' has got great reviews all over the place tho hasnt it? its in the uncut top 5.

will check blue cathedral out all the same

Michael B (Michael B), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:39 (eighteen years ago)

"Avatar" is okay. "Blue Cathedral" is pretty rad. The hype is definitely way overblown.

vartman (novaheat), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

As with so many bands, it was more fun to be a fan when they were a hidden treasure rather than a critical darling, as pathetic and hypocritical a stance as that might be.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:59 (eighteen years ago)

you people are fucking retarded and deserve to die.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

Does this mean we can look forward to a Comets on Fire/Jennifer O'Connor split on Matador?!

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

Go see them live. outdoors at arthurfest LA august 05 they ruled, i saw them in brooklyn maybe last month, they also destroyed- a great band

john w. hoppin (john hoppin), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

i'm siding with stence on this one

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Your argument disintegrates at "bad Creedence."

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've only heard the self-titled and Blue Cathedral. The self-titled is my favourite, I like that a lot. Blue Cathedral has too many (mostly) instrumental tracks for my tastes, but it's certainly not bad either.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

mcd otm. besides, "bad creedence" (a hypothetical) is still better than 98% of any other band's best work.

calvin johnson has ruined rock for an entire generation (orion), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

when did everyone go gay for creedence?

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

I hadn't thought of them as bad Creedence, but rather, low end Grateful Dead, which is much worse.

Smegma Pi (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

i never got into them. the sound is SO muddy, maybe that's the point but I may as well listen to Wolfmother through a kitchen roll tube.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

"when did everyone go gay for creedence?"

i remember reading some camden joy thing like "ccr are the best album in the world" or something and thinking, okay, hipsters be jockin', i'll set my watch. dunno if he ever wrote about steely dan though. he shoulda wrote about steeleye span cuz i got some doubles i need to unload.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

The live show is the whole deal. They're not a "records band," (though Field Recordings is decent and Blue Cathedral pretty damn great). The early stuff sounds the most like the live show, but is probably way too formless and muddy for most trad rock/pop fans.

They don't sound a damn thing like Creedence or the Dead, but I can see why some folks might say so after Blue Cathedral and especially Avatar. These records sound old. They sound like deliterate, throwbacks to the Creedencec/Dead era. Hell, Avatar is so traditionalist in its 60s/70s blues-jam aesthetics as to be practically indistinguishable from the source material. Therefore unnecessary? I'd say no, but that's just me.

P.S. I am totally gay for CCR.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

"Deliterate, throwbacks?"

Deliberate throwbacks.

And so on...

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

when did everyone go gay for creedence?

I like them a lot, but I was exaggerating a little when I suggested there was no bad Creedence (for effect, this is ILM, isn't it?). Anyway, I like the Howlin' Rain album better than any of the Comets records, but I think I'm the only one according to the thread I started on 'em.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I wonder why Major Stars don't get more love. They rule.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

1) i am pleasantly amazed that comets on fire are "critical darlings"
2) the stuff about the live shows is true
3) it CAN get samey but who cares, so can sadé and sadé is great
4) the missing element that you are not getting is the T-SHIRTS, which are excellent and make you feel extremely "rock and roll"

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

1) Major Stars don't get more love because they are actually old people, not just old sounding. Despite this hideously cruel truth, they were well on their way to getting a lot of love anyway ... but then they blew it by hooking up with a crap singer for Syntoptikon.

2) Sadé is indeed great.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

"blue cathedral" is great, I wouldn't say it sounds muddy, it is dense though.

chad (chad), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Does this mean we can look forward to a Comets on Fire/Jennifer O'Connor split on Matador?!

-- Tiki Theater Xymposium (fiestasandsiestas(nospam)@yahoo.com), November 8th, 2006 9:58 AM. (Bent Over at the Arclight) (later)

that comment is even more retarded than the ones before it! pat yourself on the back, you're a dick.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

i mean shit if you're gonna zing, zing away, but that comment is just fucking dumb.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

that Howlin' Rain album is so slept on. they should sneak it into the Avatar digipaks or something.

bernard snowy (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Major Stars don't get more love because they are actually old people, not just old sounding. Despite this hideously cruel truth, they were well on their way to getting a lot of love anyway ... but then they blew it by hooking up with a crap singer for Syntoptikon.

I disagree this statement. For one Syntoptikon is a great album, I like the singing on it. For two, they weren't on their way anyway, I don't think. For three, they're not that old and also people care about this? The Rolling Stones are fucking old.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

for four, half of major stars is young

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

stence otm

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

You guys who keep talking up their live shows are lucky... or mabye they've gotten a lot better (I haven't seen them in a few years).

They would open for what seemed like every band I wanted to see over a couple years and they were pretty on/off.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

They are often very drunk.

Shasta I wonder how many of their shows we were both at.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

re: Stencil

For four, Major Stars were AMAZING. (And the young 'uns weren't the important half, anyway.)

***

re: Shasta

I've only seen Comets a few times, and only within the last 3 years. They've never been less than inspirational.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

major stars can blow it live if they're too drunk, but they can be totally amazing when they're on. i love wayne & kate.

comets on fire are great

all three.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

and my comment wasn't really directed at you per se, just the retard who started the thread. the premise itself is terrible as there is no bad creedence!

ps. people who work at record labels commonly like music on other labels as well, it's not unheard of, y'know, music fans working in the industry!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

Fair enough. I don't know why I take your shit so seriously, HStencil. I hear 'You're retarded and you deserve to die' and I get all defensive. I'm still too thin-skined for this place after years. Genuinely sorry, and you're right, my comment made no sense at all.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

haha i don't think a comment like "you're all retarded and deserve to die" is that serious! lighten up, the dems won, it's a new morning in america, etc., etc.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

True enough. Fuck a macaca-hater.

Field Recordings from the Sun is awesome. Haven't heard Avatar yet.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

ccr is one of the top 5 greatest bands ever. comets on fire rule and don't sound like CCR whatsoever. polvo's 'shapes' is great.

all that aside, my friend had a criticism of the comets that i found funny - "i like their albums just fine, but when i saw them live it was like they just played 'manic depression' for 45 minutes straight."

6335 (6335), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

What the fuck, comets on fire sound like good hawkwind with extended arkestration

nate p. (natepatrin), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

1) Nate P. is exactly right (plus the playing Manic Depression for 45 minutes bit). All further questions should be directed to Nate P.

2) Millions of Cops Dead has faulted me for calling Major Stars' new singer "crap." I have to agree with them - I am a bitch and should be killed. In fact, I've kinda come to like Syntoptikon's vocals, esp given the relatively small part they play in the overall sound. But it took a LOT of grimace-faces and dedicated re-listenings before I eventually came around. And EVERY non-fan I've played the record for has flat-out hated the vox. They're an obstacle, where Wayne's were always an asset in the past.

3) Shapes is a fine record, but it can't hold a candle to Today's Active Lifestyles, Celebrate the New Dark Age or even Cor-Crane Secret.

4) In some sense, I am still desperately gay for Creedence Clearwater Revival. But on the other hand, that was a awful long time ago...

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, I like Shapes but Exploded Drawing is my favorite.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

Wayne's vocals usually waver too close to the indie snivel border for me, TBH. Especially on the twisted village LP with the brown cover? I can't remember the name of it right now.

still need Blue Cathedral, tho.

xp giantcryingeagle.jpg

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Wayne's got the reedy indie snivel thing down tight. No doubt, and lots of folks hate that shit, too. But his snivel always sat right with me, and more importantly, it seems to suit his music. The thin, delicate folk-psych melodies that he'd always eventually detonate with endless modal freakouts kinda demanded a wispy whisper.

Then again, I've been adjusting to Wayne's voice since Crystallized Movements, so maybe I've just had time to aquire the taste...

Now that the band is getting heavier, ditching the folky pop for heaving rhiffs, maybe they were right in thinking they needed a more powerful singer - the new girl certainly brings brass to the fore. But it also instantly dates the proceedings in an unflattering manner, and makes 'em sound like a speeded-out 70s biker jam band washing ashore somewhere in Colorado circa 1982.

"Split" is just so great, I agree. The McPhee/Pustelnik/Cruickshank lineup locked together like a set of gear wheels when playing music.

BeBop Deluxe sounds good when driving late @ night, but otherwise a little unmemorable, I must admit. Most of my favourite Bill Nelson tunes are on his solo albums.

edde (edde), Thursday, 9 November 2006 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

Split is my fave too, though some of the live recordings that are available like Hoggin' the Stage are really freaking great as well.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 9 November 2006 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

thx for the rooster and 'hogs advice. i might go back to the store and see if they have any other rooster album.

except now i just got obsessed w/too much guitar by the reigning sound so all i want is mo' garage garage garage!

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 9 November 2006 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

good stuff on CCR here - Creedence Clearwater Revival: C or D?

and here - If you actively dislike Creedence Clearwater Revival, then I can never respect anything you have to say about anything.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

haha that second one is my fav thread title ever!

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

The mention of Blue Cheer re: Comets On Fire is dead-on. That's what they sound like to me, too. First time I heard Field Recordings was when a bearded gentleman in an "avant" record shoppe recommeded them to me 'cuz he knew my intellectual limitations. I listened for about 5 minutes on the little in-store Walkman dealie and dug, but still didn't bite. "Sounds like five Blue Cheers practicing in the same room," I told him. I was right, but also wrong. So it goes...

Magic Hour >>> Major Stars >>>>>> Comets On Fire

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 10 November 2006 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

haha, have you heard magic hour? puhlease.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Saturday, 11 November 2006 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

God Punch, if there is one thing you should never doubt, it's that Elvis has heard more music than you, and me, and just about anyone, ever. Trust me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 November 2006 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, this thread got out of hand fast.

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Saturday, 11 November 2006 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Scott, I'm looking out for that Danava record, but in the meantime I got some of their demos (ca. '04) on filesharing and "By the Mark" sounds like '72 Bowie/Ronson jamming with Black Sabbath, which is maybe the best idea I've heard from throwback rockdudes in the last two or three years.

nate p. (natepatrin), Monday, 13 November 2006 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

they are one of the better bands i have heard of that ilk. whatever that ilk might be. and speaking of Sabbath, Danava are touring with Witchcraft i think. i dig Witchcraft a bunch too.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

okay, maybe not. or not at the moment anyway:

"Sweden's Witchcraft who were to start their first US tour in Seattle on October 23 have been forced to return to Sweden for additional processing at the US Embassy in Stockholm. The tour, also featuring Portland-based Danava, is now being reworked for a later start date with West Coast performances planned to be rescheduled at the end of the planned dates. Venues and dates will be noted shortly."

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

haha, have you heard magic hour? puhlease.

I've have all the albums and seen them live three times. I still stand by what I said, but I will modify it as such:

Magic Hour >>> Crystalized Movements >>> Major Stars >>> B.O.R.B. >>>>>> Comets On Fire

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

I suppose the problem I have with Major Stars is that I like Wayne & Kate when they're in combat with other forces than when they're left to their own devices. Having said that, the entire '88-'95 Boston acid rock axis make Comets On Fire obsolete.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

the two times i saw major stars it was kinda lacklustre. but i got love for those dudes, natch. kate is a danbury girl so i'll always back her up in a fight. xCTxHCx 4evah!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

scott witchcraft still made it over, some people i know saw 'em in nyc last week.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

oh, okay. not that i'm going. i never go anywhere. i am going to greenwich new york, brattleboro, vermont, plainfield, mass, hudson, new york, and willow, new york next week though. you never know.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

yay thanksgiving!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

God Punch, if there is one thing you should never doubt, it's that Elvis has heard more music than you, and me, and just about anyone, ever.

ned, i was being a dick - obviously he's heard them. i just think they're one of the suuuck bands of the twisted village stable. and VERMONSTER >>>>>>>>>>>>> everything else they ever did ever forever.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Huh I have only just heard Avatar now. Yeah not what I was expecting but I think I like it.

admrl, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

this is like a dollar everywhere now. i still haven't bought it.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

"sour smoke" is a decent jam

kamerad, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

I dug Lucifer's Memory simple because it was a rock ballad. Something that doesn't happen much anymore.

Popture, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)

No this is really good, I think.

admrl, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

I remember back in 2002 I was totally excited by Comets on Fire ... then ... nothing. I didn't like their releases after the first 2, which were total mindblowers.

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

love the vocals in the last song

wilter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

nine months pass...

I still like it

admrl, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:34 (sixteen years ago)

i don't like the subtle creedence dig in the thread title

gangsta hug (omar little), Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

i never heard 'avatar' but i saw them live around the time it came out and t6ey were raaaad.

Executive Producer Wolf Dick (haitch), Thursday, 11 June 2009 01:16 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think i've heard comets on fire -- would I like them? the thread title suggests i would.

tylerw, Thursday, 11 June 2009 01:18 (sixteen years ago)

did they break up?

6335, Thursday, 11 June 2009 01:49 (sixteen years ago)

yes

you can check out Howlin' Rain instead these days as it has several of them in it. As well as one of my drummers!

akm, Thursday, 11 June 2009 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

one of the worst thread titles on ilm

DUDE, I DON'T LOSE (call all destroyer), Thursday, 11 June 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

why do people keep saying that they broke up? so the European show and the Sub Pop festival gig that they did last summer were "reunion" shows? they certainly weren't billed as such. or did they break up between last September and now?

and yes, Avatar is a total jam. tyler you would totally dig it. I would start there and work backwards

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 11 June 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

Still love this record. They were a fine band.

We Need To Talk About Trayvon (admrl), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

otm

sarahell, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

To whom can one turn for this kind of music now?

We Need To Talk About Trayvon (admrl), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

Try the follow up band Howlin' Rain.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

is Noel Von H. in it?

sarahell, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

Ned otm, though be prepared for some bloated 70s coke rock references all over the newest album, more of which I wrote about in the Howlin' Rain thread. I really like the album, but it seems to be getting panned all over the place for the worst of the excesses. But, as Ned pointed out in that thread, these excesses are very intentional and I think work well in context.

These guys ruled in concert. I don't think anyone is bringing this mix of influences to the table right now.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

To whom can one turn for this kind of music now?

repeated, but with emphasis on the early COF sound. who's kicking out the freaked-out, fucked up, apocalyptic acid jams like the s/t and field recordings from the sun?

J Mascis' new thing as HEAVY BLANKET is the closest thing to CoF I've heard in maybe ever

idk if he's touring w/ it but I'm rly into it so far, more than I ever was w/ Witch
