Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago)

i don't really know how to respond to your posts, with these sort of jabs and rhetorical questions. i understand the notion of irony, as you might expect, but i don't see the sort of irony in calling your band "mccarthy" (after joe mcc.) having much purpose beyond being, well, textbook irony. that said, it's not an issue that matters to be much--being pretty much stereolab-indifferent--and further, i don't really see why the tone of your emails is so--seemingly--brittle. i don't even know who you are, much less do i wish to rile or offend you.

i'm also not sure who i would write a paper FOR, so i'm sure of the provenance and meaning of that part of the joke. presuming it was a joke.

also, jon, when you post oodles and oodles of images on threads, it has the potential to crash people's computers. especially those using modems, like poor old me. so whatever amusement you get out of it, just consider that, if you care.

(sorry for the longwindedness but sometimes utter, exaspering sincerity is the best method.)

so anyhow:
have fun at the show sarah!

-- Gear! (drink_to_remembe...), August 6th, 2004 11:33 AM.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"hearts" is synecdoche for harrison ford and whoever the woman is; "random" is because they met through a series of tragic coincidences. random hearts is a bad title, but two people who met through a series of random tragic coincidences is worse.

some amateuristisms from my birthday:

ok i guess one problem with jon-on-this-board is that the ratio of "just having fun" goofing off (which so often means huge images, making fun of various people, etc.) to actual interesting comments is really high. actually jon never seems to contribute anything particular interesting at all. which is fine, if that's the kind of board he and others want. that's cool. fortunately for me there are people here interested in other stuff too. so i guess jon's worst sin on this board (in my eyes) is really just being pretty boring, which makes the hubbub over him twice as boring.

-- amateur!st (amateur!s...), June 26th, 2004 8:50 PM. (amateurist)
_______________________________________________

to "just having fun" i should add starting threads about his sex life, his sexual partners, etc. etc. that don't really seem to add up to much more than him parading same in front of a bunch of virtual strangers. again, that's cool if he wants to do that, and if all this friends join in that's cool for them, but i personally find it very boring. so why am i posting here? because every so often it gets a little worse than boring, like his "all in fun" offensive posts in serious threads, the creeping sexism in others, etc. etc.

Most of my crush tapes just end up in my desk drawers but a few have hit their targets with remarkable effectiveness. One young lady was listening to the tape I made her on the train from Boston and said it moved her to tears. I sometimes feel I am perhaps better at speaking in the language of the mix tape than actually talking to people.

This Is The Thread Where We Post In Jon Williams-isms

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 8 August 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago)

honestly, i do often make jokes that people don't seem to get as jokes. the "i was just joking" clause is awkward but necessary in those cases. it does make whoever is saying it look like a chump, but it's mildly better than everyone thinking you just insulted them.

on the other hand, i have to own up to occasionally taking advantage of the gray area between a criticism/putdown and a joke.

People,
People who need people,
Are the luckiest people in the world
We're children, needing other children
And yet letting a grown-up pride
Hide all the need inside
Acting more like children than children
Lovers are very special people
They're the luckiest people in the world
With one person one very special person
A feeling deep in your soul
Says you were half now you're whole
No more hunger and thirst
But first be a person who needs people
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world
With one person one very special person
No more hunger and thirst
But first be a person who needs people
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world...
