I do clean it, and when I do so it makes this clicky/squeaky noise, and so even if my wife can't see what I'm doing she will say "I can hear you, cleaning your belly button". If I get anything substantial out of it, I usually drop it on her face in retaliation.

I think one of the major problems I have with so called 'black hip-hop' is how self derogatory it often is. I kinda get tired of hearing 'muther fuckin this, and muther fukin' that,' bleating on about whuping your 'hos and bitches, lets kill some cops, etc. Call me boring but I'd like to hear something deeper going on in the lyrics, something which gets beyond the 'life on the street' schtick. I often like the music though, I just wish the narrative moved on a bit.

Yeah, two alternating shifts/writers/storylines, except that since Brubaker left, it's been sorta all Montoya lately (and really great stories, but, y'know, at the expense of the rest of the cast).
But this is really nice storyline (though, fuck, DC's really pushing the Dead Robin imagery lately, what with all the Jason Todd flashbacks, War Games/War Crimes, and this--this is how fetishes are developed!), and the Teen Titans appearance is handled really well and everything is consistent with their book, but remains true to the Gotham Central tone.

The tale is not complete super (adulterous man and woman is caught spouse who himself proves be also not this way faithful and this way further), but by the way R. Kelly sing it/pass on it is amusingly and captivating. He brings the several quarrel and turns stretching. And he lets be also again to hear one of the best soulzangers of this time. What concerns me are R. Kelly an overvalued drol which them the bests with cupboard can tumble and already of a cliff! Ie of me still zakkammetje get, to pluck underway down to a beetje on.

The mans repertoire of completely exchangeable slimy ballads and public "funky" numbers turn him into of the most over-estimated artists of the last (package m. bit) 100 years. Apart from its inclination to small children sit the man has really performed nothing as a result of which people him would have see as "large an artist"! But well, that finds I of it.

(And no, I the project has not heard pass sentence, therefore I has indeed total of, but I get simply this way terribly tingling every time such as I am reminded to R. Kelly!)

well, ian, the animosity stems from the fact that the hate directed towards the fat goes well beyond that spewed at the bald or the spotty. my girlfriend was harassed at the mall this past spring because she was wearing a tank top which didn't suit the notion of what three or four teenage assholes felt that a "fat girl" should be wearing. now, i doubt that anyone who's ever experienced this would claim that it's as widespread or possibly even as noxious as harassment slung for being black or gay or a woman or handicapped or... but the underlying assumption in all circumstances is that these people should not exist. try living in a world where people make this assumption about you, even infrequently, and see how much it niggles under yr skin like so many bamboo shoots.

Sesame Street was early seventies but the Muppets date back to the fifties. There's a legendary series of clips they did as a series of coffee ads for local TV somewhere on the East Coast where a proto-Kermit threatens and often slays a lump of a Muppet for not drinking the correct coffee. Bemusing.

Bemusing indeed, those muppets.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 11 August 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Ned's piece:

Isn't Anything was good enough to inspire an entire scene of My Bloody Valentine soundalikes, *sigh* but Loveless' greatness proved that the band was inimitable. After two painstaking years in the studio and nearly bankrupting their label Creation in the process, the group emerged with their masterpiece, which fulfilled all of the promise of their previous albums. *much merriment* If Isn't Anything was the Valentines' sonic blueprint, then Loveless saw those plans fleshed out, in the most literal sense: "Loomer," "What You Want," and "To Here Knows When"'s arrangements are so lush, they're practically tangible. Heavens! ;) With its voluptuous yet ethereal melodies and arrangements, Loveless intimates sensuality and sexuality instead of stating them explicitly; Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher's vocals meld perfectly with the trippy sonics around them, suggesting druggy sex or sexy drugs. Rah! From the commanding "Only Shallow" and "Come in Alone" to breathy reflections like "Sometimes" and "Blown a Wish," the album balances complexity and immediately memorable pop melodies with remarkable self-assurance, given its difficult creation. But Loveless doesn't just perfect the group's approach, it also hints at their continuing growth: "Soon" fuses the Valentines' roaring guitars with a dance-inspired beat, while the symphonic interlude "Touched" suggests an updated take on Fripp and Eno's pioneering guitar/electronics experiments. Rah! These glimpses into the band's evolution make Shields' difficulty in delivering a follow-up to Loveless even more frustrating, but completely understandable — the album's perfection sounded shoegazing's death-knell and raised expectations for the next My Bloody Valentine album to unreasonably high levels. Though Shields' collaborations with Yo La Tengo, Primal Scream, J Mascis, and others were often rewarding, they were no match for Loveless. *amazed* However, as My Bloody Valentine fans — and, apparently, Shields himself — will attest, nothing is. *goodness* ;)

I was crushing on old-school Hillary Clinton (in her Twenties) -- probably because she resembles my supremely attractive friend Erin (who, despite liking me, is with someone else right now and so she's horribly unattainable). Goodness gracious, I'm an absolute sucker for blondes these days. But after dropping by a bookstore yesterday where my long-time friend Molly (who is not a blonde, mind you) works -- oh goodness, she's always stunning but yesterday I really wanted to pounce on her because she looked so exceptionally scrumptious (without even trying!) and was just so bubbly and charming. I wanted to playfully tackle her behind the counter and from there on it would've been wonderfully inappropriate! Anyhow, she's invited me along to dinner and some other event with a group of her friends on Friday -- it's not a date essentially, but at heart I wouldn't mind if it twisted into one. Ooh, I just remembered that she complimented my appearance! No-one ever does that! Squee! Cuddlestein Mountain! Nuvvieworld! Okay, I'm just getting ridiculous -- I'm just excited because it's a prospect to escape social poverty with a possible hint of romance. I'm probably being too optimistic; I can't help it! I've wanted something to look forward to!

RJG you make me nervous.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

no real need to hate on ian though. if you suffer from "social estrangement," as his user name states, as a youngun, you go either of two ways:

1) total fucking whimsy hobbitsy shit
2) you get tough and decide to create yr own fucking social reality

most people who aren't attached to computers by the fannypack choose option number 2, of course, cuz if they didn't it'd be their ass. for others who can create alternate universes through the powers of CUDDLESTEIN MOUNTAIN can live their peter pan shit as long as mom does the laundry and cuts off the crusts of their sandwiches.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

the third option that i forgot to mention is that you get emotionally and physically pummelled by assholes and never emerge. but that's why god made jesus!!!

After Ian kept talking about how his mom was super-young and into all this groovy music, I was disappointed when she looked, in the photo he posted, like a regular old mom. Somehow I was imagining cut-off t-shirts, legwarmers, and playfully tousled hair.

For Mandee. W.B. Yeats' "The Wheel"

By the way, jaymc, it was originally affected intentionally as when I was twelve I was so embarrassed about being born in provincial ol' Panama City (Redneck Riviera) that I tried to make myself seem as anti-Southern and cosmopolitan as possible, even though I never acted like a typical Southern kid in the first place. I developed the inflection from imitating the accent literally every time I spoke and it eventually stuck. It was very stupid.

"The last SJews record I enjoyed was American Water. Don't have the patience to wade through whatever kind of production he has going on now, I just want the lyrics and the guitar."

Patience to wade through the production? Why do people create all these non-reasons for what essentially boils down to:

I have dismissed this artist because it is easier for me that way. Consuming all of this music has exhausted me. I just have too much stuff on my ipod and it's getting overwhelming.

That's what I think you really mean. If you could summon the patience from some dark depth within you I think you'd find the production is very much complementary to the words on this album. People build empires, cure disease, and win the hearts of the unfuckable everyday. Surely, you can find some patience!

I've been masturbating pretty furiously lately, but only out of boredom. Well, and I guess for the orgasms, because having one is usually better than not. But you really do get diminishing returns from wanking all the time. I need to save it for a couple of days for maximum gooeyness next time.

Also, looking at pictures of naked women sometimes does nothing to improve my mood. I came across a picture the other day that just killed me -- it was a woman's neck and shoulder. No tits, no ass, neck and shoulder. I wanted to kiss it so bad it was almost physically painful.

I did go over to the ex's apartment tonight and she hugged me a lot and sat in my lap through The Daily Show, and she smelled nice, and that should be enough to hold me for a few days.

DENNY VERTIGO
Move The Warm Bodies
(Futurismico, 1981)
** 1/2

Apparently inspired by both Gary Numan and Alice Cooper's attempt to become new wave, Vertigo did his best to come to grips with the bleeding edge of 1981 on Move the Warm Bodies. As has become legend, the album itself was never released due to a dispute with the UK art label he had signed with at the time -- owner Tarquin St. Chives refused to do any promotion for the album outside of getting heroin-addicted models to slump over some bulldozers. The eventual rerelease of the album by Vertigo years later shows that despite his claims of thwarted artistic merit, Move was truly only half successful at its task. Starting off with a song called "Urethra Uniroyal" that sought to find the hitherto unknown links between the Stooges and Duran Duran was probably not the best idea, while "I Beat the Machine" and "Your Robot Thigh" were simply laughable, though the break on the latter with orgiastic voices chanting "Grunt the suck" over bleepy arrangements borrowed happily from early Depeche Mode singles is, if nothing else, unique. "Computer Reptile" signalled a better second half, though, and Thomas Dolby's guest work on synth, one of his lesser-known studio session jobs before his own breakthrough, add a necessary something to the otherwise trudging demi-epic "Gonfal, the Barbarian of the Motherboards." Still, this is a curio for only the truly dedicated Vertigo fan, though it has to be said that the liner notes are particularly fine.

No, for serious, this made me roffle:

Don't let the haters get you down; just keep writing line after line and don't revise, just make as much or as little sense as you can. Like this!

INT. A SCHOOL HALLWAY, BUT FANCIER THAT MOST

We see our protagonist, HANK SPINOZA, putting away books in his locker, which is quite fancy. He is approached by good friend, KILLER PLATOON, who was named by a military industrial complex dude because his parents sold his naming rights. Maybe a later episode will shed light on this bizarre and humorous situation.

HANK: Sup Killer.

KILLER: HI DERE. So have you been eyeing Fashion Girl lately?

HANK: Not any more than usual, why?

KILLER: Dude, something happened to her over the summer.

HANK: Did she grow breasts?

KILLER: Even better. She got rich.

HANK: Ah, that modeling career is finally starting to take off for her?

KILLER: No, she landed a role in a Lifetime movie about anorexia.

HANK: I didn't know she could act.

KILLER: She can't. She was the boom mic.

HANK: Oh.

KILLER: Anyway, so now I guess would be the best time to recall past memories when you and her were good friends, yes? So she will give us money for Rock Concerts!

HANK: I don't know, that was a long time ago.

***FLESHBACK***

We are in THE PAST. THE PAST is hazy. FASHION GIRL is not named FASHION GIRL, if you can believe it! Her name is Valencia (because her daddy is Dutch, so dutch=orange, yayyayay!) So HANK and VALENCIA are at a summer camp a several years ago before the ravages of puberty made them both weirdos (so, they're like 11). They are at a distance from the HAPPY CAMPERS who are around a CAMP FIRE

HANK: This sucks.

VALENCIA: I agree, let's be pals.

They smile.

***BACK TO THE PRESEEEENT***

HANK: After that, she went off and got into Fashion and she pretended like I never existed.

KILLER: Aw, don't cry, buddy!

HANK: (obviously not emoting) I wasn't--

KILLER: It's all right, don't let THE PAST suppress your outpouring of emotion.

HANK: Dude, I'm fine it's just--

KILLER: (stern-faced) Look. We're gonna get that bitch, so help me FUCKING GOD. And we'll show her the real meaning of KILLER -- AR AR AR AR AR AR AR!

HANK looks scared (his friend is barking for no reason!)

KILLER: Or maybe you can just rekindle the friendship and get some cash, please!

HANK: Dude, I dunno.

KILLER: Okay, so I'll just beat the shit out of her and steal her Prada bag and sell it to someone in the inner city, huh, how about that?

HANK: I don't like it when you've been drinking.

Insert FASHION GIRL who wears FANCY CLOTHES AND MAKEUP and has NO ASS.

KILLER: There she is, now's your chance!

HANK is shoved forcefully in HER direction.

HANK: Uh, hey Valencia!

***MANY GASPS***

FASHION GIRL stops dead in her tracks, as does everyone else in the scene. She looks scorned and is bleeding out of her eyeballs. Or maybe that's mascara running from the sweat cos it's awfully hot outside, hoo lawdy.

FASHION GIRL: (like one of those creepy robot alien things from AI, except not as benevolent!) I do not think you understand the gravity of your error in identity. I am the embodiment of fashion. I make fashion in the lavatory, I liquify fashion and drink fashion and I eat fashion on a bed of baby spinach and iceberg lettuce because I must make fashion for the lavatory later that day.

HANK: Valencia, I think you're taking this a bit--

FASHION GIRL: Silence, peon. (To someone off camera) Remove the waste.

SHADOWY FIGURE emerges from THE SHADOWS and removes HANK and KILLER (for some reason!) to a new, completely dark locale. From behind the darkness, there is FASHION GIRL.

FASHION GIRL: Hank, I thought my inexplicably bitchy distance from you was enough, but I'm not going to be friends with you, EVER.

KILLER: Oh, he doesn't want to be friends with you--

HANK: Now, wait, Killer--

FASHION GIRL: You...you don't want to be MY friend? But everyone wants to be my friend! There is a two-year waiting list to be my friend! I throw the best parties, have all the best connections--

SHADOWY FIGURE: Gives the best head, too.

FASHION GIRL: Why wouldn't you want to be my friend, Hank?

KILLER: Look, since you're totally loaded, we thought we could mooch off you and maybe get tickets to Rock Concerts! For fun times!

FASHION GIRL: Hank! How could you?

HANK: That isn't true!

FASHION GIRL: Take them back to the surface, Felicio!

SHADOWY FIGURE: (emerges from the darkness to reveal an average dude with average hair, complexion and sperm count.) Oh, thanks, now they know I'm your henchman.

FASHION GIRL: I'll have you demoted to office clerk if you give me lip again.

SHADOWY FIGURE, NOW FELICIO WTF: I'm--

FASHION GIRL: Come again?

FELICIO: I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!

FASHION GIRL: Bitch, what fucking Disneyworld ride do you think this is? It's sure as shit not Magic Mountain, it's the fucking Tower of Terror!

FELICIO: (weeping)

FASHION GIRL: Now get the fuck out of here and take these nobodies with you.

FELICIO: (sobbing and cowering) Yes'm.

While I've never struggled with Ketamine addiction, I do feel connected to the psyche of one who is struggling. I think I hear a lot of Nastanovich in the subtle electronics (ala Wowee Zowee) - Steve West, I'm assuming, is drumming throughout, and if that is the case, well...Westie can finally drum! Rhtymically complex. Again, I ask that anyone give a concentrated listen with headphones. I guarantee that you'll hear the subtle (and not so subtle) beauty that I hear throughout. I love American Water, and Bright Flight, (and everything else Berman has released), and would not try to rank albums. All I can say is that it is on par with the rest of his body of work. Again, Berman, you amaze me. What an album!

Strangely enough, beside the river is probably the highest point in New Orleans. I know the World Trade Center there (yes, they've got one) is at an elevation of about 10 metres, which is high for New Orleans (as some spots in the city are over 3 metres below sea level).
