-- Jason Perry (Eastsideryders3...)

------------------------------------

Jason.

I'ma just tell you what my daddy told me from his death bed. He lay there, still and quiet, his eyes sunk deep into his face, and slowly reached out one skinny arm towards me, taking my hand tenderly, as one might pluck a delicate rose from a spring flowerbed. He lived life as a man's man, but in death he was so fragile and anonymous. more like a lost child. He stroked the back of my hand with one finger and gingerly pulled me closer. Already a few phrases were bubbling in the back of his skinny throat, but he lacked the strength to set them free. I leaned in further and caught what were to be his final words: "Son...keep it gangsta", he sighed. And with that, he was gone.

Hope that helps.

i posted that russian waitress one a while back, but it deserves re-mentioning.

i've had encounters like that, of the what "what on earth is a person like you doing in a place like this p.s. your ass in bangin" variety.

Hey, thanks for reading. Sorry for my 2003 wrap-up taking so long. I've been very occupied as of late with various freelance work and finishing up some writing for the ___ Weekly and ________.

It was a wild year to say the least, am I right? If you weren't listening to a Deerhoof album you downloaded off of Soulseek, you were watching a Chinese-subtitled Finding Nemo (a children's film!), you downloaded off KaZaA.

Let's get to it, shall we:

Three rappers from the South released albums this year! Their music has lots of shouting and is called "crunk." David Banner's is a garden variety radical with shitty-sounding drums and slowed down albums that sound good to black people when they drink cough syrup to get high, Lil Jon is crazy and his music is about sex, and __________ are sort of the same as Lil Jon and David Banner but different.

Also, there were a bunch of other hip-hop and rap singers doing songs this year. _______, for instance, who brought his _______ meets ______ flow over ________ in a blender beats. His former partner in rhyme _________ switched it up with a few hot singles (including the _______-sampling smash "_________") that had the "game on lock." All in all, some hot songs were released by hip-hop singers this year, but can we tone it down on the violence and objectification of women. I mean, I'm all for free expression but do we need a girl shaking her god-given assets (pardon the pun) while some doo-ragged thug with a pistol leers at her in every video on BET.

50 Cent had several famous songs that I heard many times. Too bad he can't open his mouth, huh?

Compared to pop-thugs like 50 Cent and _________, Jay-z looks like ______. He dropped an uncompromising final album with his best "rhymes" yet and also acknowledged the brilliance of the criminally underrated Talib Kweli and Common. Maybe some other so-called rappers should take the hint and retire now! (I'm looking at you _________.)

"Dancehall reggae" or just "dancehall" was another big story in the 2k3. Dancehall singers Sean Paul, Elephantman and others taught us how to "wind that waist," "dutty yeah," and "bun di chi-chi man," and duet with Beyonce (phwoar!). I predict more big things in the future from the little island of Jamaica.

And now, to England, where rap music has been reinvented. Dizzee Rascal, who is much better than The Streets, raps about guns and girls and possibly drugs (but not cars!) (Note: In England gasoline is known as 'petrol.') Dizzee Rascal is reinventing music because his beats sound like _________. There are other rappers in the "UK garage" scene such as Wiley, the ______ of London, who, like Dizzee, proves again that England isn't all Britpop and "bangers and mash."

Indie rock again proves the law of diminishing returns and the less said about it the better. (But if you're still interested check out, _______, Deerhoof, ________, ________, ____________, ____, _______, ________, and _______.") (Note to Williamsburg hipsters: Lose the trucker hats and the Maiden shirts.)

And the big trend in music criticism this year was the blogosphere, renegade journalists that weren't afraid to let their freak flag fly. Heron Bone, K-Punk, Luka, Technicolor and myself didn't pull any punches in our weekly or even daily dispatches from the frontlines of the culture war. If you're interested in reading more, check the links on the sidebar of this page.

Well, that was my 2003, ya'll. Hope you enjoyed my wrap-up. If you have any questions/comments/arguments e-mail me. See ya.
